Books Lately

Show Us Your Books day with Steph & Jana

Tailspin - Sandra Brown
romantic suspense, doctor and pilot, politicians and sick people
I was super into this and couldn't put it down, wondering how everything was connected and waiting for the twists I knew I wouldn't see coming.I started it and then tried to stay up to finish it, but finally called it quits at almost 2am - oops. I finished it first thing the next morning though. Don't be put off by the 'romantic' part if that's not your jam, it's really not heavy on that (just a couple of scenes). SB is one of the only romantic suspense authors that I enjoy both the romantic and suspense parts equally. I also read The Alibi by SB and liked it, but not as much.
Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman
fantasy set in 'london below'
Okay, this was not 'unputdownable', but it was thoroughly enjoyable. Don't know if I would say it's my favourite Neil Gaiman but I can see why it's his most popular. It was magical, entertaining, snippets of boring but overall I really enjoyed it. Not sure I'd ever re-read it, but if fantasy is your thing, I recommend.

Magic Triumphs - Ilona Andrews
final book in kate daniels series i'm not crying you're crying
I don't often talk about series books multiple times but I can't help myself with this one. I discovered Kate Daniels a couple of months ago and figured I had plenty of time before the 10th book came out, but I didn't count on being so obsessed that I binge read 9 books in a matter of weeks and then had to wait impatiently for book 10. I cannot believe netgalley approved me, though I'm not complaining. If you like paranormal romance, I recommend. This was the perfect end to a fantastic series.
Received from Netgalley.

Caught in Time - Julie McElwain
third in kendra donovan series
I put this under 'enjoyable enough' because it really wasn't bad, but I highly doubt I'll continue with this series. My memory sucks too much for so much time in between releases. Also, my tastes have changed and there's not enough romance in this series to make up for the annoying main character and not compelling enough mystery. It's like I said with the Sandra Brown book, SB makes me enjoy both parts, this author does not. The mystery/murder plot is not enough to make up for the lacklustre love story and main character.
It's All Too Much - Peter Walsh
decluttering/not letting your stuff own you
I've read other books and decluttered before, but I think this is the first time I really examined my relationship with stuff. Admitting that I buy or keep certain things because I think they will make me happy, healthy or a certain kind of person. Like I need to check certain things off a list, instead of  focusing on what actually makes me happy and healthy. I still have work to do, but that's what I liked about this one - it talks a lot about the long term, not just decluttering one and done. Like a diet - you'll gain the weight back if you don't make a lifestyle change. Some of it was not relevant to my life, but overall it was very practical, which I liked. Glad I read it.

Toil & Trouble - Multiple Authors
15 short stories of women & witchcraft
I'm not normally a huge fan of short stories, I can do a collection about once or twice a year but that's my limit. I requested this because I thought it would be similar to A Tyranny of Petticoats, which I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, I did not love a single story in this collection. There were 2 that I liked until they went a way I did not expect or want, but other than that I disliked every single one. Perhaps I'm not the intended audience.
Received from Netgalley.
The Fifth Season - N.K. Jemisin
no bloody idea
KC read this trilogy and wanted me to read it. We rarely read the same books, except for Harry Potter and LOTR. But he thought I would enjoy it. He was wrong. DIVORCE. Kidding. But seriously this took me 3 months to get through, I would have DNF'd it, I should have DNF'd it, if you held a gun to my head right now (though, please don't) I could tell you shit all about this book except that if I never see it again it will be TOO BLOODY SOON.

Still working on Still Me. I had planned on finishing it this past weekend but stuff came up.

Linking up with Steph & Jana.
Life According to Steph

If you're a romance fan, here are a few I enjoyed recently:

TL;DR - I recommend Tailspin & Neverwhere. I also recommend Josh & Hazel if you don't hate romance. Also, It's All Too Much.

Read anything decent lately?
