2018 - 9/12 - September Goals

I accidentally took a few months off my goal posts. The last one I did was June and I didn't accomplish any of them. I needed a little break and now I feel rejuvenated enough to give it another go.

I know a lot of people feel the need to do stuff in September because it's back to school. I obviously never went back to school in September, but KC goes back to work and I love the return of a routine. Perhaps that's why for the past few years I feel the same about September 1st as I do about January 1st. Truthfully, I just love the 1st of any month. Heck, I love Mondays because they are the start of a new week. I love clean slates and fresh starts.

I need to make some boring but important goals this month. I actually want to accomplish them as well, so here's hoping sharing them here will work for me.

September Goals

1. No. Spend. September.
I am confident that I've overcome my shopping addiction that I dealt with pretty much since I was a teenager, I rarely buy clothes anymore. But, I fear I've just given myself a new expenditure problem and letting myself get away with it because it's not always 'shopping', at least not how it used to be. But I've let my expenditure get out of control lately - books, random amazon purchases, makeup, everything TTC related I can get my hands on, things that may be inexpensive individually but add up. So. I need to straight up stop. I'm all about 'letting' myself do certain things so I don't go crazy with restrictions, but sometimes restrictions are necessary. So, absolutely, 100% no expenditure in September, with a couple exceptions, of course:
  • Eating out once a week with KC.
  • Food for book club meeting.
  • Bills, groceries, petrol.
  • We have one thing planned at the end of September that we will need to buy tickets for and pay for drinks. That should be it though.

2. Declutter/do the mins game and organise.
I am not, and do not want to be, a minimalist. I do not think we have an overabundance of stuff. I've read that Kondo book. I am confident with almost all of our possessions being useful or beautiful... but. There's always a but. I am currently listening to It's All Too Much and then Steph posted the lies we tell ourselves about clutter and it's like I had a light bulb go off in my head. I'm confident with most of our possessions, but I have a bunch of stuff in closets or spare rooms that I keep meaning to do something with and I just need to get rid of them or actually do the thing! I also have a bunch o' crap in our basement for a family member who does not exist yet, I do not want to get rid of those things but they definitely need organising. So that's my goal. Declutter a bunch and do the mins game, then organise all the things.

3. Organise and get rid of paperwork.
I have a little filing cabinet downstairs. It has piles of paperwork in it, not organised at all. Neither is the box I was using before. I don't need to keep a lot of those things, like bills that are available online.

4. Meal plan and maybe stop eating mac n cheese.
Meal planning is extra hard right now because I can't eat a whole lot.. okay, I probably could, but it hurts and mac n cheese doesn't hurt, so.. you see my logic, yeah? I want to at least try and get back in the meal planning swing o' things, even if I'm making different meals for the two of us.

5. Finish entry kitchen wall project.
Mentioned this on Wednesday, I would like to have it done before book club's next meeting which is towards the end of the month. We've already done like 25% of the work, so... should be easy-ish.

6. Get in front of netgalley books.
I had to have something fun or easy on here. I would really like to get to a point that I am in front of the published date for all my netgalley books. As of right now, I have 11 books I need to read before the end of September. I'm going to try and not request any more, but lol as if.

So there we go. Some big goals, some little. Some important, some silly. As long as I actually work towards them, I am confident I will get 'er done. Here's to September!

What's Up Wednesday

I finally remembered to link up with What's up Wednesday! Every month I keep meaning to, and then all of a sudden another one passed me by. I did not do all the prompts because my life is not that exciting.

What we're eating this week
Well, to be completely honest, I'm still on the mostly soft food wagon, it's just too difficult to eat anything hard or that I have to tear with my teeth - think pizza or wraps. So, lots of mac n cheese, risotto or gnocchi. Don't worry, the meat pies I got from the Four n Twenty truck were totally doable because I cut them up anyway. It's basically blasphemous for me to admit this but I've never been able to just eat them with my hands and biting into them. I mean, if I was at a game or school event, obviously you had to eat them with your hands, but I prefer a plate and some cutlery thank you very much. I always got a sausage roll at those kinds of things anyway, much easier to eat with your hands.

What I'm loving
The fact that I have 48 46 meat pies in the freezer. Wonder how long they will last...

What we've been up to
August has been quite a busy month actually. I'll do my normal monthly recap next week, but we've had birthday celebrations, work outings, soccer games, job site visits, book club, new restaurants, yard work, and about 75 million mosquito bites. Oh and we had a light bulb shatter in the kitchen, super fun. Didn't know that could happen. Also lots of reading and I may have brought the Sims out again - I love taking long breaks because then when I get back into it, there's a ton of new updates and expansion pack thingys.. Yes I am aware of my age.

What I'm working on
We started a project back in May - we painted the wall white and bought some wood, cut it all up and painted that as well... and have done nothing else since. I also have no photos of the project except for my very awesome drawings on the wall and buying the lumber. I am hosting the next book club meeting so my goal is to have it finished before that. I don't want to post someone else's picture on here, but it will basically look like this when we are done. Hopefully.

What I'm excited about
TODAY I am going to see Ilona Andrews - well, that's their pen name, but it's actually the two of them, Ilona and Andrew Gordon. They wrote the Hidden Legacy trilogy that I adored and of course their most popular series, Kate Daniels - the last book came out yesterday and I actually got an ARC for it so I've already read it. But I figured, why not go see them and listen to them read it. So yes, that's what I am excited about. Hopefully they are nice, because if not, that would suck.

What I'm watching
I've still not finished Downton Abbey, I signed up for a Hulu trial to watch The Handmaid's Tale but haven't watched it so the trial expired and now I'm paying - will have to watch soon. The only thing I've watched lately is the Guernsey movie and it was everything I wanted it to be.

What I'm reading
Lately my attention is all over the place - I'll start something and put it down for a month. So I'm 'currently reading' 6 books. I am trying to finish all of them before the next link up, we shall see. I am also behind on my netgalley books, plus I have a bunch due back at the library soon.

What I'm looking forward to next month
The only thing we have planned so far, that I can remember anyway, is Downs after Dark. I've not been since 2011 I think? That was a visit, before I lived here. I dug through the ol' facebook archives to find some fabulous throwback pictures. I'm going with the same people this time too, with a couple additions. Should be fun, especially because I haven't been to Derby or anything since 2016.

Sometimes I miss my long blonde hair. Sometimes not.

And that's all that's going on right now with me. I'm curious, if you moved to another country, can you think of anything (food wise) that you'd freak out over like me and my meat pies? What's the one thing that you'd miss and would pay an exorbitant amount for to get a piece of home?

Books Lately

Show Us Your Books day with Steph & Jana! I've not had the best luck with books since the last link up. Nothing horrible, just nothing amazing either.

Love and Other Words - Christina Lauren
second chance romance, something happened 11 years ago
This reminded me a lot of Swear on this Life. In some ways better, in other ways not. I don't always like when one chapter is the past and one is the present, but obviously if it was told in order there would be no tension in the present half. So I get it, but still. I recommend if you liked Swear on this Life. It is a romance, but it's not this author duo's normal style, it's more grown up. Read it in one sitting, I liked it but felt like I must be missing something because people were raving about it, then I got to the end. The ending kicked me in the heart and then gave me a hug. Feelings, I had 'em.

Bright Side - Kim Holden
incessantly happy and optimistic girl goes to college and meets a guy but secrets
This book is insanely popular on goodreads and amazon, I liked it but didn't love it. Honestly the main character drove me bonkers and I wanted to push her in front of a bus. Not because she's optimistic, that's just the reason behind her nickname, bright side. Unfortunately, the book kind of hinges on you liking her because of reasons that I can't tell you because spoilers. So. Do I recommend it? I don't know. If you don't hate the main character, sure.
The Summer Wives - Beatriz Williams
famous actress returns home to island after being gone for 18 years
I have only read one other Beatriz Williams book - A Hundred Summers - and absolutely loved it, so my expectations were high for this one. This wasn't as good, but it wasn't awful. Took a bit to get into and I had a hard time with the flip flopping between times and keeping all the characters straight (not a strength of mine when books go back and forth between multiple time periods). But it was overall a good read.
Received from Edelweiss.
Send Down the Rain - Charles Martin
secrets, second chances and stupid people
I didn't absolutely hate this, but I had super high expectations and it never really got more than 'okay' for me. It felt like it was trying too hard to teach me a lesson but I was too busy rolling my eyes to get it.
Received from Netgalley.
Blind Kiss - Renee Carlino
two people kiss blindfolded and then stay friends over the years
This is a romance, yes, but I feel like people read this author even when they aren't super into romance so it kinda crosses over into normal mainstream kind of books? Either way, I don't recommend it at all. I had high hopes and it was not good. The characters were awful and made stupid decisions and then got all butt hurt when those decisions had consequences.
Received from Netgalley.

Record of a Spaceborn Few - Becky Chambers
3rd in wayfarer series
This is a DNF for now, I loved the first two but got to 18% in this one and couldn't have told you anything I'd read. So I'm giving up for now, I might pick it up again one day, but maybe not. It just didn't grab me like the previous two books. Womp.

Still reading Still Me and The Fifth Season. I've not been in the mood for Still Me and I'm struggling through The Fifth Season. I would DNF it but KC really wants me to read it so we can talk about it. So I continue.

Linking up with Steph & Jana.
Life According to Steph

If you're a romance fan, here are a few I enjoyed recently:

Dragon Bound // The Ravenals series // Dr Strange Beard (5th in Winston Brothers series) // Not So Nice Guy - not my favourite RS Grey but still enjoyable.

TL;DR - I recommend The Summer Wives and Love and Other Words if they sound like your jam.

Read anything decent lately?

July 2018 Recap - What's New With You Link Up

Hello all, time for another what's new with you link up! Thanks again if you join me, I always appreciate it. I didn't mean to disappear again, but that's life lately. July was both insanely busy and super not busy. I don't have much to show for it, it felt busier than it looks though.

In July:

We didn't do anything for the 4th, in fact, we didn't really do anything at all until we left for Vegas on the 12th. We had a great time in Vegas, it was very relaxing and low key compared to my other trips or our Honeymoon.

I was unfortunately quite sick off and on for the first 2 weeks of July, have no idea why, I would feel fine and then I would be like nope, need to lay down or puke right now. Including in Vegas, which made the trip even more fun. Nope, not pregnant. Which is really quite rude of my body, if you ask me.

Beatriz Williams - author of A Thousand Summers and her newest, Summer Wives - came to the Louisville Library and I had tickets (free, but still) but had to skip because my body hated me in July. Like I said, rude.

My girlfriends and I went to see Shania Twain. Tickets went on sale last year and we bought them immediately. In terms of nostalgia, she was absolutely amazing, one of the best concerts I've ever been to. In terms of entertainment, it was just okay. Not trying to shit on her, I'm sure seeing her in the 90s or whatever would have been fabulous. I still had the best time, but I went to hear the songs, not to see a show, if that makes sense.

Then, we had our food/book club. We read You, which I'd already read 3 years ago but didn't mind reading again. It was a fun book to talk about and is anyone else excited for the mini series?

Lastly, I got braces. I would share a picture, but I don't want to. I look like me, with a bunch of metal in my mouth. Instead, here's a picture of the exciting waiting portion and Penny sharing my after-braces-nap.

No workout pictures from this month - what with Vegas, recovering from getting my oral surgery, being lazy and now my braces, I've been reading a shit ton (what else is new) but failing majorly at getting to the gym or running. My teeth are sore right now but not enough to stop me exercising, so I have no excuse. I am currently doing a diet bet with my bestie, hopefully that's the kick my butt needs to get to the gym (aka hopefully I have some workout pictures to share next month, not that any one else cares about them but they are great motivation for me so this is me telling myself to get my butt to the gym today).

If you'd like to link up, please do so below.

So that was July. What's new with you?
