In May:

We used our new grill a bunch:

I did a big closet clean out and watched Millie jump up to the top of my closet 3 times before finally making her stop. By 'jump up' I mean she jumped, grabbed on to my clothes, ripped a bunch off hangers as she struggled to claw her way up to the shelf where she would bite me if I tried to get her down. Ah, cats. Gotta love 'em.

Speaking of cats, I took a lot of photos of them because I really am quite obsessed with them.

^ In the bottom right, you can see Penny's new favourite thing to do while I am eating - she sits on the arm of the couch or on top of the couch behind my head purring as loud as can be, like she thinks she's a dog and I'm going to give her food. Even if I did give my cats human food, which I don't, Penny has the most finicky stomach and would probably puke on my the second I did. She's so weird.

Moving on. We did a couple of house projects - or rather, finished two and started another. The last one really wasn't necessary and more of a 'fun' thing, so when life got in the way we deserted it. I'm sure we will finish it in June, or maybe July. I will share when we do, of course.

^ Backsplash, finally! The middle project is probably the one I'm in love with the most, I get so obsessed with little things when I have an idea and finally do it. I really dislike our bathrooms but they are pretty low on the renovation priority list, so to help out with the lack of storage or just the lack-of-love for the bathrooms, I bought some spice racks from ikea and installed them on the side of what is essentially our linen closet. I put my skincare/hair stuff in them and I love it so much. The unfinished project has to do with the wall in the bottom right, it's behind our back door which is the entry we use daily.

In May, I went running and to the gym quite consistently if I do say so myself.

We also celebrated my brother in law's marriage at a BBQ at his new in-laws place, though I have no photos of said celebration, so here's a photo of another day where we hung out in their backyard and ate 32 degrees.

Finally, I read a lot in May, because what else is new.

You'll notice Penny is the only cat who is ever pictured with me while reading because she's the only one who likes to hang out with me 24/7. If I am sitting or laying down, she would like to be sitting with or on top of me. Chelsea prefers KC (but will follow me around or allow me to pick her up as long as I'm moving) and Millie hates everyone all the time unless you're in the bathroom then she's your bestie.

If you'd like to link up, please do so below.

So that's what I got up into May. What's new with you?

  9. I'm laughing so hard at your cats personalities. Especially Millie in the closet. We love grilling out! We do it all summer long :) Great job with the closet clean out! It looks great! So do the back splash and the bathroom shelves!!

  10. 1. I have a spice rack under my bathroom cabinet for my personal pharmacy. #WORTHIT
    2. I WANT A BACKSPLASH!!! I need to add that to Teh German's more immediate house to do list. He'll have to spend at least 3 months over thinking it before getting it done.. so I mean, that's a perfect fall semester plan for him now that the back porch is complete.
    3. The cat at our SF AirBnB bit me and that was the end of our love story. I wanted to be his friend until he bit me, but there was too much bad blood.
    4. I need running motivation. Seriously. I'm walking a 5k and 10k in July with a broke friend AND I've signed up for 2 halfs in November and 1 in Dec and 1 in Jan.
    5. I love when I see OUR mugs in your pics. :)

  11. I've never heard of a cat going to so much trouble to get to the top of a closet shelf before! She's a determined gal for sure! It is funny to read about your cats and how they all have very distinct personalities. I think all too often, we just assume that all animals are the same, but that isn't the case.

  12. That's smart taking pictures each time you run. Great idea to keep accountable. The cat pictures are adorable!

  13. Neat backsplash! I'm still pretty overwhelmed with all the possibilities of what I could do that I literally need someone to tell me what is next on the Home-DIY list. The spice rack idea is cool too - we have wire racks up in the linen closet but the wooden racks are prettier to look at, by far. Except for the ice pack on the ankle pic, good job on going to the gym or running so much in May! I need to find some motivation to get back to it ...

  14. Hooray for having summer weather in order to actually use your grill! And way to go on making it to the gym more! I’m hoping that I’ll be able to work that in to my schedule soon because I do miss it! Also I still think that it’s amazing that y’all are doing all of these house projects yourselves. It amazes me when people have a vision and then can make it happen!

  15. Love that spice rack idea!! And all your pictures of the cats and books :) I hope the rest of your house projects go well!!
Way to go on all the running and gym visits!! Not easy to commit to that so good for you!!!

  16. The idea to use the spice racks in your linen closet is fffing BRILLIANT!! I have been looking for something similar for my linen closet and NEVER thought of that. I so off to Ikea this weekend. Girl you are so freaking smart! Love you!!

  18. I need to start taking pics of the days I work out to hold myself accountable. I have been sporadic lately and my food has been off; what else is new? I love seeing all of your home projects! The backsplash looks great.

  19. I love the spice rack idea in the linen closet! Love your new back splash too! I haven't been very consistent with my work outs the last two weeks and I am so mad at myself because I was doing so good before that. Damn allergies. Need to quit using them as an excuse to slack.

  20. I love the back splash - it's gorgeous. And what a smart idea with the spice rack and linen closet. My linen closet is weirdly placed in my bedroom. But I liked my apartment otherwise so I just accept that my towels and such are in my bedroom. :D Of course, I love that Penny is your reading buddy. Max is mine too, mostly. He likes to snuggle for at least a bit, but then he might move to the hamper or closet for a nap. LOL! I really liked Magic Bites but my library doesn't have the next book in the series (I think someone lost it and they just didn't replace it) and I'm too dang cheap (and forgetful) to buy it. I have been terrible with my workouts. Just terrible about them.

  21. I seriously need to do a huge closet cleanout. That's so motivating. Out with the old and in with the new! Your kitty cats are so fluffy & adorable!! My cat does lays on me when I'm reading too! =) Thank you for the lovely linkup!! =)

Have a great day!! Melanie || Toots + Dill Blog

  24. Doesn't it always feel SO GOOD to clean out the closet? And yay for lots of reading and grill time! Love it. Also, great job going to the gym and running consistently. I'm trying to get back into a routine this month!

  25. I am jealous of your bbq situation! We don't have one and it's making me feel very un-Australian. One day. Love the new backsplash, so pretty! Also looking forward to hearing about future renovations, however small. We might need to move soon so I'm living for other people's happy home stories! (I think the move will be somewhere less nice than where we are now, and where we are now isn't all that much to write home about)

  26. Ooh, I can't wait to buy a house so I can go ALL IN on DIY home updates. Love that spice rack idea!

Would you recommend Truly Madly Guilty? I read Big Little Lies a few months ago and really enjoyed it!

P.S. You have got the cutest kitties! So fluffy!

  28. Ugh, closet clean outs! Why do I feel like I have to re-clean my closet every six months? I'm new to your blog and enjoying reading it! Linking up. :-)

  29. A backsplash completely changes the look of a kitchen. I love it.

Jett literally waits outside the bathroom door while you shower. He and Millie would get along.

What'd you think of Truly Madly Guilty?

  31. Yay with the home stuff! I will be so glad when we finally buy a home so I can get stuck into all the projects. Poor Jesse doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into 😂

  32. The backsplash looks so good, and now I need those IKEA racks for our bathroom. Genius. You go girl with all your running!

  33. Okay, let's chat running (and icing...). I used to be a really consistent runner. I ended up with a stress fracture in my 4th metatarsal way back in 2014 when I first started running. It returned in 2015. And since then, every time I run, I end up with some pain and bruising in my foot. Nothing major, but still enough to put me off the runs. Do you experience similar minor injuries that just require ice? I'm never injured enough to see a doc--but it just makes me nervous to keep running! (Also--holy productive month, lady. Looks like it was full of all the kinds of things that make me happy!)
