2018 - 1/12 - January Goals

Happy 2018 everyone! I hope you had fun celebrating however you did or didn't, and I hope you are off today because days off are the best. I am spending the day reading, probably wrapped up in a blanket drinking 75 cups of tea because I can.

In 2017 I decided I wasn't going to do any new years resolutions (even though I am the kind of person who loves them) or year long goals because they just weren't working for me. I decided to do quarterly goals, but I'm here to report they also did not work for me. Oops.

I do have a couple of year long goals, the normal ones - get healthy, lose weight, eat better - you know. But my biggest, most important, most difficult goal is one I have absolutely no control over (yay) and not one I particularly want to talk about, not because I'm trying to be secretive but because I have nothing to say about it except that it's out of my control so.... not much I can do.

How's that for vague blogging?

Let's move right along. Back to monthly goals, let's see how that goes. Some of them are silly, some not so much.

- No spend January. No eating out, no shopping, no buying books, no nothing.

- Meal plan and stick to grocery budget. This goes hand in hand with the no spend month, but I feel like it needs double the focus.

- Fix my skin. My skin has been a complete and utter asshole for about my 6 months and I've tried multiple things but if I'm being honest, I haven't been very disciplined or tried things I am positive will work, so that's what I'm going to do in January.

- Paint my nails twice. Baby steps.

- Catch up on blogs and emails.

- Read netgalley books older than 3 months. Only 4, totally doable.

- Gym 3 times a week. I was back on the wagon of 5 days a week, fell off around the holidays, you know how it is.

There we go. 7 goals. Some of them easy and silly, some actually require work and discipline.  Like I said, I am the kind of person who likes new years resolutions or year long goals, but I can like them and admit that they don't work for me. So I'm going to try this monthly thing and see how that goes.

Even if I don't write them out or acknowledge them to anyone but myself, I always have year long goals or new years resolutions, I always hold out hope that this year will be my year. So I hope it is. I hope it's yours too.

Also, just a quick reminder to anyone who wants to link up with us - this Thursday the 4th is the next What's New With You link up.

  1. Happy 2018!
Meal Planning is something I need to work on this year as well, I've been eating way too many bagels for suppers or a bunch of random snacks for lunches. I'm also going to decrease screen time but I'm still working out how to accomplish that one!

  2. What have you tried on your skin? I’m curious about what didn’t work. I’ve been relying on a mix of Rodan and Fields products and my charcoal bar lately.

  3. I feel like monthly goals work better for me than yearly goals! I hope it works well for you! Meal planning is one of my goals, too. It's such a pain in the ass but it needs to be done!

  4. I dig your goals! The whole no spend thing is like whoa for me. Not sure i could hack it! But probably wise after the amount spent the past two months haha. Happy new year!

  5. I laughed at the painted nails because I am the same! I type too much to maintain a good manicure. :/

  7. I've fallen SO far off the gym wagon! Definitely need to get back on track with exercising this month! And meal planning + sticking to a budget. YES!

  8. instead of 'goals', i'm thinking of them as 'changes'...stuff that just needs to happen this year.

i gotta say girl; the ordinary products are damn good. and i love the price point!

  10. I'm definitely curious to hear if you have any luck with your skin. I break out every single winter and then it starts to clear up in the Spring. I thought doing the Whole30 back in October and eliminating sugar and dairy from my diet would help, but NOPE. Ugh. It's so frustrating.

  11. I have a similar fingernail gold myself. I never paint mine and I don't know why because my hands always feel so much better when they're painted. Maybe because one day later I'll look like a hot mess with chip Nails. As you said baby steps

  12. My biggest goal this year is also one I can't control, namely the visa..... Arrrghh. Good luck with your Goal that Cannot Be Controlled!

I am terrible with goals in general, which I really need to figure out. I just turn into a massive toddler whenever anything vaguely goal-like is put before me. It's not a good trait and I need to get a handle on it! I'll be interested to see how your shorter term approach works for you. Maybe extremely short term goals are the way forwards?

  13. No resolutions for me this year - just challenging myself to be better than I was the day before. I like the monthly goals though. I'm trying for a no-spend January - even to the point of making thank-you and birthday cards this month. Happy New Year!

  14. Oh yay! I'm glad you're back to monthly goals! And I love the ones you chose this month. I will tell you...fingernail painting and your book reading goals will go hand in hand. Reading is the best way to pass the time while waiting for nails to dry. And if you don't have a quick dry top coat, you need one ASAP. Although...you said no-buy January so if you don't already have one that could cause a problem with that goal. #cantwin. Anyway, I enjoyed this post, vagueness and all. I think we all have things we work on that we don't necessarily need/want to share publicly. :)

  15. Happy New year, friend! We have similar goals. I really need to work on my eating and budget. Both have been nightmares. I feel like I could use a no-spend year! Hope this is a great year for you!

  16. My skin is a mess too. And it's completely my fault. I stopped caring for it when I was depressed and now I'm really paying the price. Ugh. So if you find something that works for you, please share! I tried setting yearly goals and failed. I tried setting quarterly goals and failed. I tried setting monthly goals and failed. So I stopped setting goals. :D Honestly, my problem is I try to do too much and overwhelm myself versus picking the one or two things that really matter to me and focusing on them. Because everything else is gravy, ya know? And yes, I always think every year is going to be my year. Let's hope this year is our year!

  17. I really like goals, but yeah, year-long ones are kind of hard to stick toward. I like the idea of breaking things down month by month. I should really get back into the habit of sharing them on the blog -then maybe I'll be even more inspired to do them. I definitely need to start getting more active again, so a goal this month is probably just finding ways to get active at least 3 times a week.

  19. I’m with you - love yearly goals, but writing monthly goals seems more doable. These all realistic and achievable - I’m right there with you on the exercise goal. Also hoping that your ultimate goal becomes a reality this year. xo

  20. YAY for goals! No spend January is also one of my goals but I am focusing on no Target or clothing purchases as it is my birthday month and I know I will be going out to dinners with friends. Jess at Just Jess

  21. Happy New Year!

I'm still getting my poop in a pile in regards of what I want to accomplish but I believe I will be cutting frivolous spending with a few exceptions of stuff I need to get.

  22. Happy New Year! :-)

I love setting goals too, but, like you said, sometimes it's so hard to stick to them (even when you know they're absolutely doable). I'm still figuring out what smaller goals I'd like to accomplish in January.

I totally feel you on the asshole skin thing as well. I went off birth control at the end of November, and I swear I think that's what's doing it. Normally my skin is dry and itchy in the winter (annoying, but I can deal with it), but now I'm also battling breakouts ... Not cool. I hadn't had a pimple in months, and then suddenly I had 4 pop up overnight. It makes me crazy, which probably doesn't help. Haha.

Anyway, good luck with your goals this month! (And good luck with the important major goal as well!)

  23. I am trying to get back on the healthy eating and working out train. The eating is happening now that I am doing Whole 30 this month...but I have yet to work out yet. I think it will happen this week or next...I am trying to work myself up to it. LOL.

My skin was an asshole for a long time. I finally found my routine that works for me, but I think a lot of my stuff isn't cruelty free and that is what you are trying to stick with right? Any routine, you have to be consistent and give it a few weeks to start working. I know that is hard because I want results and I want them now, Veruka Salt style. I am still trying to find an eye cream and anti aging serum that isn't ridiculously priced and works great. So let me know if you try any of those!

  24. Solid goals, lady :) I'm hoping to get myself on a fitness schedule and do some meal planning every week, too.
Best of luck with the vague goal. Don't stress yourself out too much <3

  25. I love your goal of getting caught up on your old Netgalley books! That's one thing that I really need to do this year too because I'm so far behind!

  26. I can imagine you feel like the other side of the world feels like the other side of the universe when your mom isnt well. Dang it

  27. Girl, I had some vague blog posting, so I totally get it. Lots of love and prayers for that ONE thing!

Totally with you for no spend January and sticking to grocery budget. Finances are different now [posted about it today] and i need to be good.

  28. Your goals sound totally doable!

And don’t worry about the vague blogging, we can’t share everything! I’m praying and thinking of you as yo7 go through whatever it is you’re going through! Xx

  30. How are you managing your no buy with all of the book deals?! lol. I'm always so tempted by your instastories, but I haven't been reading at all lately so I'm not letting myself buy any books. I haven't really thought about any yearly, or monthly goals yet, but I definitely want to come up with a few things so I can be more intentional.

  31. Awesome goals! I need to set smaller goals too because I end up failing big goals that I set for myself. I also need to read all of the NetGalley books which are like 100 years old now. Meal planning is something that I also need to focus on, buying random stuff is okay but I like having a set plan.
