I am still on my romance kick.. honestly, I'm always on some sort of romance kick, but I don't always talk about the romances I read during the link up because I know they aren't everyone's jam. I normally just talk about the ones I really enjoyed or think other people will like. So when I am on a bigger than normal romance kick, I have more to talk about. If you ever want to see all the books I read but don't talk about here, lets be friends on goodreads!
Black Dagger Brotherhood - J.R. Ward - 3/4/5 Stars
TL;DR - I recommend....... well.... if you like romances, any of the ones I talked about. If you don't, I recommend Just One Damned Thing After Another if it sounds like your jam (it's really not too sci-fi-ish at all), The Things We Wish Were True and Good Omens.

romance series about vampire brotherhood
My friend Sara (hi Sara!) recommended this series to me and I gobbled it up. I liked some books more than others, I don't know if I will continue because it started getting too samesies, but if you like fantasy romance (romance people), I recommend. The characters names are absolutely ridiculous though (Wrath, Phury, Rhage, Zsadist....), but you get used to it. I only read the first 6, my favourites were 1, 2 and 3.
Kulti - Mariana Zapata - 5 Stars
soccer romance.. but way better than that sounds
This one was good, really good, I enjoyed it more than Under Locke but nowhere near as much as The Wall of Winnipeg and Me. It was hilarious and I adored Sal. Her inner dialogue was fabulous. Zapata's books are slooooooooooooow burns, you really get to know the characters and watch them build a friendship/relationship. That's good for people who don't like any adult scenes in their books, but it can get a little frustrating (ahem) when you know it's coming eventually. Again, I really enjoyed this, wanted to stay up all night to finish it but had to function at work the next day so I didn't. Still not as fantastic as Winnipeg, but I'll take it.
The Vixen and the Vet - Katy Regnery - 5 Stars
beauty and the beast retelling with veteran
Ignore the cover. I LOVED this book. It's short, quick, sexy, adorable. It's a Beauty and the Beast retelling, so it's ridiculously unrealistic and predictable but if you like romances I highly recommend. And by romance I mean romance so make sure that's your jam. Also, this author regularly uses her books as fundraisers with proceeds going towards charities that are related to the book (for example, this one donated to Operation Mend and Pets for Vets) so high five to her. I also read Never Let You Go (Hansel and Gretel retelling) and Don't Speak (The Little Mermaid retelling) which are also in the 'series' though they aren't connected in any way. I enjoyed them both.
69 Million Things I Hate About You - Kira Archer - 5 Stars
romance, girl wins lotto, decides not to quit but to see how far until boss fires her
Oh my goodness. Nadine recommended this and I am so glad she did! This book made me actually laugh out loud, several times. This is a romance so if that's not your jam, stay away. Basically it's a hate to love story, in the challenge of who can blink first they end up falling in love. It's not overly dramatic or angsty but it's not boring either. This is such a cute, light, quick story and I highly recommend it. Bonus, it's only 99 cents on amazon (not an affiliate link!).

Just One Damned Thing After Another - Jodi Taylor - 4 Stars
time travel but with humour, romance, mystery and adventure
Took me quite a bit to get into this one, but then I was waiting on my friend and reading this to keep me occupied, so when she arrived I was like DO YOU MIND I AM READING and couldn't wait to get back to it. There are a lot of characters and normally when it's a super character focused book the plot isn't really heavy but there was a lot of plot and things going on. I loved the writing, very simple but enjoyable. There was one page I literally read like 7 times and then when I finished the book, kept going back and reading that page. So good. I requested the rest of the series from the library.

romance series about guys in a rugby team
I loved Penny Reid's series with the beards and this series was just as good. I asbolutely loved the first one, 2 & 3 weren't as good but still funny. Cute little romances that pass the time just fine.
good & evil try and stop apocalypse - but funny and sarcastic
This book took me FOREVER to get through. KC was reading it on one of our long flights and kept reciting funny lines and telling me I should read it. So I did, and then he didn't even finish it (rage). This book was hilarious, interesting and very unique. But something was missing for me, I kept getting distracted easily or putting it down. I switched between the ebook and audio several times, neither clicking with me. Overall, glad I read it, doubt I'll ever read it again, not inducted into the cult of good omens lovers, but still recommend.
modern day pride & prejudice but with lizzy a lawyer and darcy a judge
You know I love a good P&P retelling. If, like me, you just like any semblance of similarity to P&P at all, or you like romances and don't mind a few adult scenes, you might like this. I almost didn't read it but I'm glad I gave it a go as it was seriously enjoyable and fulfilled my P&P retelling need. Not for the Austen purist, honestly you could change the names and no-one would compare it to P&P, so it's good for the non-fans as well.Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe - Melissa de la Cruz - 4 Stars
modern day pride & prejudice but with darcy a girl, lizzy is a guy named luke
Oh look another one! I really enjoyed this one, it was super quick and easy, it wasn't too christmassy to be reading in September. It actually hardly felt like a P&P retelling because of the whole Darcy is a girl and Lizzy is a guy named Luke, I kept forgetting who was supposed to be who. It was fun, light and cute, don't be turned off by the P&P title if you're not a fan, just think of it as a cute christmas romance about childhood enemies becoming lovers.Received copy from NetGalley
secrets in a small neighbourhood
I liked this one more than I expected to when I began it. It was a bit boring at first, but all of a sudden I really like and care about all of the characters (and there are quite a few of them). You see some of the twists coming and are surprised by others. It was an enjoyable read.

teenager living on reservation transfers to an all white school
This was a cute, quirky book. It was also pretty heartbreaking and I definitely teared up a time or two. I liked it more than I thought I would. This was an interesting book and I thought it talked candidly about a lot of heavy subjects, skated over some seriously heavy things like I'd accidentally skip a line and someone had died. Overall, I recommend it, it was the right mix of happy and sad.
girl has disease where she can't go outside, everything will kill her
The hype with this one meant I had super high expectations and I was really preparing for a super intense read, which I don't think I got. It's still good, interesting and surprising, I do recommend it. It's a quick feel good with a dash of wtf read.

A bunch of books to add to my TBR list! Lately I’ve been reading all the chick lit because they are my go to vacation read! So good!
ReplyDeleteLove love love romances, especially when I need something fluffy or light. Loved the 'ignore the cover' and 'romance people' lines. HA!
ReplyDeleteI definitely have to be in the right mood for a romance, but I still typically enjoy them. I'm also a sucker for a Beauty & The Beast or a Pride & Prejudice retelling, so I'm adding The Vixen and the Vet and both P&P retellings to my list! Just One Damned Thing sounds really good too, and I'm always a sucker for time travel books! And you can totally complete Erin's challenge! I'm almost done with my 9th book now, and then it's only one more for me too!
ReplyDeleteI've only read The Absolutely True-Diary and I really loved that one! I want to read Good Omens; I'm glad to hear it's funny. I believe it's becoming a movie soon!!

part time indian was cute, wasn't it? that book took me by surprise (how much i liked it). my books this month sucked -- all of them :(
ReplyDeleteI only read the first two books in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series but enjoyed them. The Things We Wish Were True is already on my to read list. I enjoyed Everything Everything and just watched the movie.
ReplyDeleteSo many high rated books-- it's the best when that happens! I requested Pride & Prejudice & Mistletoe after you mentioned it last time because I'm a sucker for a good holiday book, so I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteDon't kill me but I still haven't ever read Pride and Prejudice (!) BUT I definitely think I need to read Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe asap because stories that involve Christmas are my FAV
ReplyDeleteTotally agree about Part-Time Indian, it definitely felt like some things were skipped but I think that can be kind of realistic.
ReplyDeleteThe more I distance I have from Everything, Everything the more the WTF becomes my primary reaction :)
Everything Everything is on my list but I'm not hurrying towards it.
ReplyDeleteLoved the Sherman Alexie book.
... with a dash of WTF read... haha... that made me laugh
ReplyDeleteSo I totally now have to check out the sexy version of Beauty & the beast! ;)
I can't believe it has been 3 years of this link up! I really credit it a lot for boosting my reading life when I really needed it. And of course I am always interested in what you've been reading! I'm going to try Zapata sometime! The vixen and the vet sounds good too as does just one dammed thing. I hope Mansfield gets better for you. Like I said I wish I hadn't left it til last because it wasn't my favourite but it was still Jane Austen and I appreciated her words. Dying to re-read persuasion and I think I will listen to p&p again sometime since I have the Rosamund Pike version from Audible now. Nothing wrong with a good romance kick! I find romance gets me out of reading ruts more than anything other books do.
ReplyDelete69 Million Things I Hate About You sounds hysterical! I always love your pics :)
ReplyDeleteMeg, Borrowed Heaven
Wow, so many books this month! Some excellent recommendations - more to add to my TBR! Ha, thank you :)
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you liekd 69 Million Reasons because I really enjoyed it!!! I am adding Just One Damned Thing After Another, Kulti and Vixen and the Vet to my TBR! I loved Everything, Everything...but how did the just graze over the mother's issues???? I guess that is what you get for YA.
ReplyDeletePart Time Indian sounds like something I'd be really interested in! Going to need to add it! I can't wait for 69 Million Things is available for me to read, so I can be like the cool kids!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the Black Dagger Brotherhood but only through book 8. I repeat stop after book 8 (John Matthew's book and book 7 isn't super great but sets up book 8) or you may end up hating the series. Seriously. It jumps the shark and becomes super repetitive with little character development. Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe sounds cute. I'm adding to my TBR for a light holiday read. Part-time Indian and Everything Everything are already on my TBR.
ReplyDeleteI just got P&P and Mistletoe from NetGalley. I'm excited- it's been awhile since I've read a retelling :)
ReplyDeleteYou are just #bookgoals for me! I need to read more!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I knew how much romance you read! I'll have to go check out your GoodReads more! :) I have that Pride, Prejudice & Mistletoe book on my NetGalley. I was saving it for closer to Christmas, but somehow I ended up with a LOT of Christmas romances to read through NetGalley, so I might read it soon since you said it's not too Christmas-y. The Things We Wish Were True really surprised me too. I thought it would be a bit meh based on the description.
ReplyDeleteYAY! So happy you liked Black Dagger! You're so much further into it now than me hahaha :)
ReplyDeleteI can't get into romances really, but I did add a few to the list that seem interesting. And I'm totally with you on this link up. It's where I get all my "to-read" books from.
ReplyDeleteI ended up stopping my other books to zip through Under Locke, Kulti & Wall of Winnepeg. All your fault! haha they were great though!
ReplyDeleteAlexie's book is so amazing! But yes, I know exactly which part you are talking about, you blink and somebody is dead.
ReplyDeleteI loved Good Omens, and I'm ready for the TV series to start!
It took me several re-readings to appreciate Mansfield Park. It's still my least favorite Austen novel, but it really has a lot to say.
ReplyDeleteTotally getting 69 things. I have mo problem with a good romance novel, not even ashamed about that. As for everything everything, this is literally why i have a love hate relationship with reviews. Everytime something is too hyped up I get let down so if I really want to read something I have to force myself not to read about it ha. im weird I know.
ReplyDeleteI've never read Pride and Prejudice, but I'm all in for retellings of it!
ReplyDeleteAs always I am amazed by your reading skills! I definitely will bookmark this post for when I finally get through my latest library sale swag! Loving your romance kick! Maybe I should give that a try...
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Everything Everything. It was standard YA fare but I did like the pictures.
ReplyDeleteI have Part Time Indian and Everything Everything at home ... in my teen's library. I'll see if she'll loan them to me. ;) And Just One Thing sounds like something I'd like - I'll have to look for it.
ReplyDeleteI am in a romance mood lately so I just added a few of these. I read the first JR Ward book a long time ago and I remember it not being my thing. I get frustrated by the 'troubled guy with a dark past' plot. I also read Good Omens a long time ago. Neil Gaiman is my favorite author but it was not my top of his because I've always been just okay with Terry Pratchett, not quite my jam.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading summaries and blurbs and cliffnotes, I feel like Mansfield Park might be my shot at actually liking a J.A. book. Still haven't read it though. I like Gaiman a lot but don't think I'll ever get a book like The Ocean at the End of the Lane again; I haven't liked his others very much.
ReplyDeleteZsadist? Haha, what?!
ReplyDeleteThe only one of these I've read is Good Omens. I adored it and I'm sad that you didn't.
I'm always impressed with how many books you read each month! Several of these look really good!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Part Time Indian. Some of the main character's inner dialogue made me seriously laugh out loud.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about Zapata's books having a slooooow burn to them. I read Under Locke and felt the same way.
Oh I just bought 69 Million Things I hate about you!! For 99 cents, what a deal. Thanks for sharing about that. It kills me how much books are on ibooks and amazon. Love when I get a deal.
ReplyDeleteWoohoo! :) So many books. Alright Lady, you have me adding "true" romance to my TBR. I told you I'm always wishing there was more romance in other genres, lol, so I'll give some of these a try! :) I'm certainly not against them, I just rarely think of going for a "true" romance, fantasy, etc. etc. I typically like elements of those things in general fiction. This really doesn't even make sense. I just got P&P& Mistletoe and am excited to read it. I'm a sucker for a fluffy xmas rom com. Added Just One Thing.. as well. I am loving Time Travel anything. :) I thought Everything Everything was cute. I liked how it was written and it just made me smile a lot. I didn't think it was ground breaking. The movie is not very good. Just throwing that out there because another friend who read it was offended that I didn't tell her how AWFUL it was. LOL. It's not THAT bad, but it is not very good. Watch at own risk. Good luck with East. I liked it, but it was definitely kind of a slow adventure. I liked it a lot overall, but it takes a little to get into. But the words and margins are HUGE, so it's really quick either way I think? XO - Alexandra
ReplyDeleteSimply Alexandra: My Favorite Things
So many books, so little time! I need to add some romance to my repertoire. Also, I literally just added 69 Million Things I Hate About You to my TBR because, why the heck not?!?!?! Also, Pride & Prejudice & Mistletoe?! Sold. Teach me your reading ways, my friend!
ReplyDeleteIt's impressive how many books you can read through. I haven't read any of these but I always love knowing which ones were the best reads in your opinion and which ones aren't worth investing time or money in.
ReplyDeleteGood Omens sounds interesting. I've seen it floating around on GoodReads and Amazon and stuff. Just One Damned Thing After Another sounds good! Adding that to my TBR list now!
ReplyDeleteKristen, I think you are going to finish a challenge...eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!
ReplyDeleteI've missed our chats. I need to make more of an effort to keep in touch :( That has nothing to do with books...it's just the truth.
I left my kindle in Michigan when we got married. I keep asking my parents to mail it to me, but they keep forgetting :( Hopefully I get it back soon so I can get back to reading lol

Midwest Darling
The Sherman Alexie and Nicola Yoon were two of my recent favorites- I liked both of them more than I thought I would as well. The things We Wish Were True is on my TBR; adding Just One Damned Thing After Another, and I wan to know what page you kept rereading! Good luck finishing the challenge- you got this!!
ReplyDeleteYes to all the romances! Sometimes (okay, all the time), it’s just what you need. I’ve already added a lot of these to my TBR list based on your previous messages to me - can’t wait to get into them!
ReplyDeleteI have been reading alot of YA lately and enjoying it. I own The Things We Wish Were True. Need to get to it! Pam
ReplyDeleteThe Just One Damned Thing series sounds fascinating! Just added it to my Goodreads!
