Thoughts and stuff

I finally watched Big Little Lies on the flights to and from Oz, and I didn't love it. I don't remember the book very well, but yeah. The book was better. I mean, it almost always is, but I still had high expectations because of the cast. It wasn't bad, just not as amazing as I'd hoped.

I watched the trailer for Ready Player One, which I also feel meh about. I really liked the book, it's one of those books that in hindsight I'd rate higher. I only rated it 3 stars because a lot of the references went over my head, but I still really enjoyed the story. So it's more like a 4. Can I just change it now? Anyway. I don't think the trailer really did the book justice.

KC's grandpa is really sick. He was recently diagnosed with a rare and advanced cancer, and he's currently undergoing aggressive treatment. We've been doing all we can to help of course, and my mother in law is run off her feet. We made some frozen meals - without a kitchen you guys, that's no easy feat - including sweet and sour chicken, honey mustard chicken, chicken enchiladas, buffalo ranch chicken and beef burritos. I have never made freezer burritos before, I have NO idea why. KC loved them and wanted to keep the ones I made for his mom. But seriously, they were so easy and I'm definitely going to try a non-meat version for me.

We've been relying on freezer meals or things that can be microwaved lately, and I've fallen back in love with Trader Joe's gnocchi. Goodness it's delicious. I wish KC didn't like it so I could keep it all to myself.

In an effort to get better with meal planning when I have a proper kitchen again (or at least an oven) I bought this meal planning pad with magnets. It seems to be sold out right now but it was only $10. That's not an affiliate link, fyi.

As I mentioned, our oven arrived with a big dent in the side and the replacement was supposed to take a week and then a month (!!!) but thankfully it is coming this Saturday. I am SO excited to have an oven again, this has been the hardest part of the reno for sure. Plus, it's gas. Yay!

I miss Taylor Swift. THERE. I said it. I hope she releases new music soon.

I don't drink coffee. Never have. Won't say never will because things change. But the last few times it's come up, whether online or in real life, the person I am talking to loses their damn mind. Like I'm threatening to take their coffee away. It's okay that I don't drink coffee for pete's sake. Who cares? I just don't understand caring that much about what someone else drinks/eats/watches/wears/cares about.

We are trying to drink less soda. I've given up soda several times, obviously always failed eventually. I'm very much an all or nothing person, so cutting back is weird. Like I can have one or two, not twelve. I'm okay with plain water, KC isn't a big fan so we've been experimenting with sparkling water. He likes the ones from Trader Joe's but they have too much of that sparkling water after taste/kick for me and I was not a fan. The kroger ones have splenda in them I think, but they taste better.

Any sparkling water recommendations?

  1. Yay for your oven coming this weekend! That is so exciting. And I am so sorry to hear about KC's grandpa. That is so hard! Thinking of you guys and your family!

  2. I need to stop drinking pop! This summer I randomly just started buying one almost every time I was in line at the store. Not good!

  3. We like la croix water but I rarely buy it these days. I have been drinking way too much Pepsi lately (see today's post on my blog haha).
Renovation hassles are REAL. I only had to go about a week without a stove and oven though. I used the crockpot. Our oven in Alaska was broken for about 4 weeks once and that was rough.
So sorry to hear about KC's grandpa.

  4. Real question is why didn't they leave you the dented oven so you could at least have something while you waited?

They have water additives in a little silver bottle, Mio? IDK, they are pretty good, IMO. I just don't dig sparkling water. My water shouldn't have bubbles, but that's probably because I'm a weird American. I was the only one order water "without gas" in Germany since everyone drinks sparkling water over there.

I have 2 dry erase boards for meal planning. One has a week laid out on it and the other is empty for my store list. This way Teh German can add to the list if he thinks of something we need/we run out of something/he needs something not food.

Gnocchi and pesto with sausage is probably Teh German's favorite meal.

  5. Sorry to hear about KC's grandpa. I hate cancer so much and the treatment can be really hard on people going through it. Thinking of you all. Sweet of you to help make some meals.
I love Taylor Swift by the way too!

  6. so sorry to hear about KC's grandfather :( F*CK CANCER!

i hate renos while it's happening but i love the finished product. when we did our basement, i worked it into our contract that they had to be done within 2wks otherwise i was going to take $ away each day they're late!

  7. Goodness - sorry to hear about KC's grandpa. Treatments are horrible but hopefully they are helping him. I don't use my oven that much during the summer but if I didn't have one at all? yeah, I'd go nutso. Coffee -- good grief - let the girl drink what she wants, people! I'm actually trying to find some sparkling water recommendations too. I need to get back on the meal plan wagon (in a rut on making the same things) - but I also want to try stocking my freezer with prepped meals.

  8. I'm so sorry about what your family is going through with KC's grandpa, and obviously his own struggle as well. That's so hard. Thinking of you guys. You definitely went above and beyond for them by making so many freezer meals. I want to try breakfast burritos in the freezer someday. My KC is all about breakfast burritos. hehe I watched Big Little Lies after reading it (I dunno, a few weeks apart?) and I just felt like the show was so much easier to guess what was going on with the mystery, and also it was a LOT LOT LOT more stark. As in, everyone's life is effed up, and so we're all just going to be somber and keep on effing things up. Did I think it was well acted? Yes. Definitely. But I enjoyed the silliness of the book, and that the mystery was a lot greater, and that it was generally more critical and funny about ultra upperclass lifestyles. I dunno. I had no idea Ready Player One was going to be a movie. I still haven't read it. Gosh, so many books. I also miss Taylor Swift. Darn it. She's just so rude (seems like), but I love her music and I can't help it. I hope KC takes me to see her again if she comes out with new music. LOL XO - Alexandra

  9. I'm so sorry to hear about KC's grandpa & will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. It sounds like you guys are doing such a great job helping out where you can and I'm sure it's appreciated so much. I think I actually liked the BLL show more than the book in terms of overall enjoyment-- though the twists were better in the book (which I read first, so obviously lol). But as much as I liked it, I really hope they don't do a second season- it just seems unnecessary. I think Hint Fizz is the best flavored sparkling water, though it's kind of expensive and hard to find which is annoying. I really like Perrier if I want something non-flavored, and I loove the apricot La Croix. Yay for your oven coming (back) in earlier than expected!

  10. I'm so sorry to hear about KC's Grandpa. So very sad, sending much love and prayers to you all. Ok, this is odd but I like mixing water with diet ginger ale. It gives the water a little kick without it being over the top and doesn't leave that aftertaste that sparkling water does. Sometimes I let the diet gingerale go flat and then mix it with water. Try it, you might like it.

  11. Sending all the hugs, I'm so sorry to hear about KC's grandfather. But I'm totally drooling over the meals you've prepped for them, and without a functioning kitchen - get it girl! And yessss to all the sparkling water, that's been our thing too lately. Oh Trader Joes how I heart you! <3

  12. Totally agree with you about Big Little Lies. Although, I knew how I would feel once I saw Shailene Woodley was cast. I am not a fan.

Freezer meals are the best. I go through phases when I have a ton of those stocked up, but currently have none. My stress level would probably go down if I stocked back up!

Quitting soda has become so hard for me. As far as sparkling water, I really like adding a packet of True Lime to plain sparkling water or club soda. It has stevia instead of aspartame. I feel like that's better, but I'm sure they'll come out and say it's horrible any day now.

  13. Target Simple cucumber mint sparkling water or LaCroix grapefruit or passionfruit. Whatever you do not LaCroix cran-raspberry or whatever. Terrible vomitous stuff.

So sorry about KC's grandfather. You are good eggs for doing what you can. I am sure he appreciates it as well as KC's mom.

I watched about 15 minutes of Big Little Lies and turned it off. I like the people in it, but honestly I think that story is better told in book form as usual.

  14. I am so sorry to hear about KC's grandfather. That is so sad. Sending your family lots of hugs. I definitely feel like the Big Little Lies book was much better than the show....but I still liked the show alright. I wasn't losing my mind over it or anything, but it was watchable. I've never made freezer meals before, but I want to. I think some breakfast tacos would be awesome and I might try to figure out how to make that happen for next week.

As far as sparkling water goes, I loved a lot of the la croix before I got pregnant...then the thought of them made me want to puke. Now the only one I can drink is the blackberry cucumber. It is so good!!!!

  15. Sorry to hear about G-pa... I hate cancer. Truly hate it.
I always tell people about sparkling water - drink it for 2 weeks, you'll change & grow to love it. really. truly.
I never drank coffee until I was in my 40's... & now addicted. Just stay away from it & never get hooked on it.

  16. I want to read the Book Big Little Lies, but have yet to pick it up. I'm so sorry to hear about KCs grandfather. So kind of you to cook without a kitchen, that is such a help.

Sometimes I wish I didn't drink coffee, i'd love not to need the caffeine in the morning. You're lucky!

  17. I get the weird commentary when people find out that I've never had pop. I mean, I've tried it (only sprite, never the dark stuff), a sip, and I hate it. I hate anything fizzy. So I feel you on the coffee thing. Why does anyone care that I hate pop? You're free to drink it if you want, I just don't!

  18. My closest TJs is not super close, but I'm planning to make a voyage there soon because it's been too long since I've had that goodness in my house. Will keep an eye out for the gnocchi because hello, gnocchi is the best and I haven't made it in like a year.

Hugs to KC, so sorry to hear about his grandfather.

The coffee thing... well, not the coffee thing per se, but the histrionics some people go into when you don't like a thing they like. That might be one of the most annoying things in the whole wide world. And when you email me back I'll tell you ALL ABOUT IT 🙈

  19. I'm sorry to hear about KC's grandfather - sending positive energy! Yay for oven arriving on Sunday!! My diet coke addiction is down to 1 can a day and I'm okay with that amount. Soda may not be good for me but there are always way worse things I can do too. :D I'm not a huge fan of sparkling water by itself either. One of my friends loves it with fresh watermelon cubes. I have always loved the scent of coffee but did not like it when I was younger, then one day, my coffee switched flipped on and I've been a fan ever since. I don't understand why, though, people seem to be shocked or offended when you don't do or drink things they do. Or why they take it as a personal insult. You don't drink coffee; I have never finished a glass of wine. So what? I have not seen Big Little Lies and I'm not sure if I ever will because Liane Moriarty and I don't seem to hit it off. The two books of hers I've read were not for me, so I suspect that BLL is not either. I do agree wholeheartedly with you that the book is almost always better!

  20. So sorry to hear about KC's grandpa -- always such a hard thing to go through. So happy that your oven is coming in! Hooray for cooking! We're also obsessed with the TJ's gnocchi. Their freezer meals are amazing - we do them at least 3 times a week. I couldn't do Big Little Lies -- I tried, but just couldn't get into it.

  21. Ick. I don't like sparkling water. I do like coffee, though. I started drinking it in college and now I have at least one cup daily. I actually admire people who don't drink/rely on it. Lol
I HATE when I realize I should've rated a book higher. I feel like such a poophead when I do that. Hahaha.

  22. I WAS JUST SAYING I MISS TAYLOR SWIFT haha we're the same person. Oh, but I'm a huge coffee nut, so I guess we're not the same person anymore ;)

  23. I stopped drinking soda years ago, though I will have an occasional Ale8 (have you had one?). I can't pass those up. I love water but want something else when I get home. LaCroix is high but I love the ones. Reminds me of Sprite, in a way. Also good with vodka. I'll add more lime juice to it, too. And I'm sorry to hear about KC's grandfather. That's so tough and it is very hard on the caretakers as well. Let me know if I can do anything, all the way in Frankfort!

  24. That's a shame you didn't like Big Little Lies.. I loved it haha. I also could watch Alexander Skarsgard in anything, and watched all of True Blood even though that was atrocious in some parts. Sorry to hear about KC's grandpa.. hope things improve for him. I've been drinking tiny ginger ale cans at lunch every weekday.. my boring work week needs the little things to look forward to. That's the only soda I drink unless we go out to Chipotle, and I get a Pibb every time.

  26. We make gnocci homemade, so my hubby probably wouldn't like the gnocci from Trader Joe's, but I'd like to try it. So much easier than making it from scratch. I don't drink coffee either. I never did. I drink tea.

Haven't watched Big Little Lies yet. I liked the book but am always turned off my adaptions. So I just didn't. We'll see if I do.

    That gnocchi looks great.

  30. Nice of you to make so many freezer meals for the family. Sorry about KC's grandfather. That is hard.

I personally don't know why everyone is obsessed with coffee and think it's a problem if someone feels they can't function without it. That's not good, people!

  31. So glad to get an update from you, although sad news about KC's Grandpa. :/ Been there with cancer and my dad and it's truly awful for the whole family. I totally hear you on coffee. Although I drink it, I do find that if I dislike something someone else loves (e.g. I'm not a big pizza fan) they take it as a personal offense!

    ReplyDelete
  32. So I've NEVER been a coffee drinker, EVER. But all of a sudden started craving iced coffee during pregnancy! When you aren't really supposed to have it lol...and now I'm obsessed. Have you tried iced? I still hate hot coffee, so maybe you'd like iced?

As for sparkling water, we love the La Croix flavors in Grapefruit (Pamplemousse) and Peach-Pear! xx

  33. So sorry to hear about KC's grandpa. Sending good vibes your way. I totally relate to the no coffee deal and missing Taylor Swift! Actually, well, I guess I sort of drink vanilla lattes on occasion now. Moving to Seattle, I should have figured it'd happen at some point. But my go-to drink will forever be a soy chai latte. Mm, so good! Everyone loves La Croix, but I'm just not a fan. Maybe it's the carbonation or something but I always get such a tummy ache from it! San Pellegrino is my personal fave.

  34. There is nothing wrong with not drinking coffee! Totally normal! And big yay for getting your stove! I am so impressed how you are doing without one, I couldn't hack it!

  35. I was just listening to T Swifts 1989 album on Spotify thinking when will she have some new music! We are big fans of sparkling water in our house - I think the target ones are the best and at a good price!

  36. I drink coffee, but I don't HAVE to have it and I totally don't get people who pretty much worship it. I'll maybe have one coffee a day (if that) a few days a week because I love tea more - but I don't even have to have tea!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm sorry to hear about KC's grandpa! That's always really rough.

I need to get better with meal planning - I'm on a weight loss program so most of my meals are protein shakes, so I really only have to worry about snacks and one meal (usually dinner) but so many of the healthy meals I've tried to make aren't my most favorite. Sigh. I wish I liked more things. LOL

I don't drink coffee either. I don't like any hot drinks - tea, coffee, hot chocolate. None of it. lol

  45. (Oops wrong account) Oh no! Sorry to hear KC's grandpa is ill, I hope the treatment goes well. I am extremely impressed at the meals you've managed to knock up without a kitchen, going to follow the recipe links now and pinch them. I don't like coffee either and you're right, people lose their minds over it. Why?! It's almost as bad as when I turn down an alcoholic drink. People really don't like that.

I am trying to give up diet coke again. I have not yet found a suitable replacement so let me know what you discover!

Also this reminds me I need to send you the meal planning stuff. Aka extended ramble. I'm all over the place at the moment but will get it to you when I can!

  48. I totally miss Taylor Swift too! I hope that her new album comes out soon! And the book really is always better than the show/movie, except in maybe the case of Wicked, but I think that's because the book is so dark compared to the show. And Chris totally didn't love Big Little Lies either when we watched it, but I think that's because we had just finished the book and it was too fresh on his mind. I hope that KC's grandpa is doing better. The only other thing I can think to say is that cancer sucks.

  49. I'm so sorry to hear about KC's grandfather. So sweet of you guys to make freezer meals! Not having to think about meals is such a blessing when life is crazy.

I made burritos for the freezer before Baby came and they have been Christopher's favorite thing to pull out for quick lunches this past month. Like you, I don't know why I've never made them before. So easy!

I love T Swift too. No shame! :)
