Latest purchases - hits & misses

I love when people share posts of what they've bought lately - whether random amazon purchases, clothes or house stuff. So I thought I'd do the same and figured Lauren & Bre's link up was the perfect excuse! No affiliate links. It's quite a long list because it's from like the last 6 months.

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion $17

I had some pretty awful pimples last month and this stuff had rave reviews. I've used it several times and while I think it helps, I don't know if it's a miracle worker. Withholding full judgement just yet as I've not actually been able to use it as soon as a pimple feels like it's popping up - it's normally when it's been around for a couple of days. As of right now I don't know if I'd necessarily recommend it.

Mario Badescu Facial Spray - $7

Avene Thermal Spring Water - $18.50

I don't really use facial sprays or anything, but at the end of May/beginning of June, my skin went absolutely nuts. I don't know if it was rosacea or an allergic reaction but I needed some relief. I bought both of them, they both felt fine and soothing. I prefer the smell of the Mario Badescu one. Both of them actually felt like they dried my face out more when it finally dried, but that could have been the weird thing my face was doing. My face will sometimes swell after I workout in the summer, or mow the lawn, so I will continue using them until I run out, but if I repurchase, I think I will buy the Mario Badescu one over the Avene one.

Bird Feeder $25

I shared some videos of Millie going nuts over this. If you have cats, you should buy this. We had to move it away because we thought she'd give herself a heart attack, but we put it back recently and though she still goes a bit nutty, she gets over it (the first time she sat there pawing at the window for 2 hours straight). We came back from Australia and it was on the ground though, not sure if we had a storm or a super fat squirrel. Oh, if you want this to actually feed birds and don't want squirrels, putting it up higher would fix that (we didn't get any squirrels when it was higher). But since we bought it as cat television, we don't care if birds or squirrels visit.

AmazonBasics Universal Travel Case for Small Electronics and Accessories $8

I freaking hate this thing! Don't recommend it at all. I don't know how people fit so much in it, I could barely fit the small amount of electronics we travel with in it. It's not flexible at all, I can't really explain it, the case itself takes up more room than the things inside it. If I used it, I would have had to take along something else for all the things that didn't fit. Instead, I just scrapped it. I tried to return it but Amazon was going to charge me like $6 and I paid like $8, so whatever. I am going to donate it to goodwill. I ended up using a small pouch I won in a Show Us Your Books giveway - way cooler anyway and seriously fit everything. You can see it below, the yellow thing (you can get it here, I'm seriously thinking of buying another, they are so handy).

library card pouch / notebook from here / wallet from here

Makeup case $11
I needed a new makeup case for travel and this was absolutely perfect. Fit everything I needed, loved the separate areas for little things and brushes. Highly recommend. It's like $11.

Car bluetooth speaker $15

I recently got an iphone 7 so I can't plug my phone into my car like I used to. I had no idea things like this existed, I would have bought it ages ago! It stays plugged into my aux port thing, I have to turn it on when I get back in the car but that's less annoying than plugging my phone in every time. It was like $15.

Mat removing comb $5
Not sure if I've mentioned this one before but if you have a cat (or dog?) with mats, this will be the best $5 you will ever spend, I shit you not. It gets every single one of Millie's mats out easily and painlessly. It's not an everyday brush, when I notice a mat, I get the brush/comb and Millie knows what's up. She also knows she gets a treat afterwards.

Over the sink drying rack $25

First off, in our last house we had a great dishwasher but there were still things I hand washed. In this house, we have one of those portable dishwashers and it is the WORST so we hand wash everything. We also have zero counter space. It folds up super small.

Pig kitchen rug
Guys, I am obsessed with this. I was coveting it for ages, when I finally went to move it from my 'saved items' to my cart, it was sold out in the bigger size. I was so upset, but I moved on... until I saw it was back in stock. Snatched that sucker up.

I haven't put it in the kitchen yet as it's for my new kitchen but here it is on my office floor when I got it so you can get an idea, it's pretty big!

Weird note: I don't eat pigs. Is it weird to have a pig rug in my kitchen when I don't eat pigs? I think it's good, because it reminds me of the animal, which reminds me why I don't eat them. Wondering why I don't eat them? It's not for religious reasons or anything, I just really really like pigs and not as food. And yes. That means I don't eat bacon (I actually really don't like bacon anyway, I know, I'm the only person on the entire planet).

But let's not focus on my weirdness, let's focus on my super cute pig rug.

Target picture frames (ivory/grey) $8

All of these frames, regardless of size, are $8 (well they were when I bought them). I am putting real photos in them, just haven't done so yet. Some of them are still online, otherwise I saw them in store the other day. They have other colours (black, light wood, dark wood) I only bought ivory and grey.

L'oreal eyelash primer $9

I know a million people recommended this, I bought it ages ago and finally used it on our trip to NZ & Aus. Holy moly guys, this stuff is AMAZING. Like, game changer. Unfortunately, it is l'oreal, I am trying to get away from brands that aren't cruelty free - anyone know an affordable option that works but is also cruelty free?

Vegetable chopper $20
If I can just make one recommendation today, it is this thing! Best $20 I ever spent. We eat a LOT of onions in this house and I got sick of always chopping them. We like to have them on hand though, so this solves that problem. Seriously. It's a bitch to clean and watch your fingers near the blades (common sense, I know, but it's gotten both KC and I and hurts like a mother) but SO worth it. We've used it for other veggies as well, but onions are our main love.

Well there you go, the past few months of random purchases. I bought some other beauty/skincare related things but I'm waiting till I've used them for long enough to know how I feel about them. Mainly Lush products, beauty counter and random ulta purchases.

So. Cruelty free eyelash primer anyone? Miracle pimple stuff?

  1. I need some new skincare. Mine is not loving life right now. I'm pretty sure I nearly bought that exact same cosmetics case from Amazon before, too! I ended up getting a hanging one in the end and it's SO useful.

Love the pig rug. Enough said.

I am also sick of chopping onions: my solution so far has been doing them in my food processor, but the options there are slice, grate, or obliterate - none of which are quite what I'm after. That contraption looks magical although guaranteed I'd open an artery on it somehow. Eh, worth it I say.

  2. I think the bird feeder is my favorite thing on this list... mainly because I really enjoy all of the videos that you post of Millie going crazy whenever a visitor drops by. Love it!

  3. I love your bird feeder videos! I'm going to go see if I can find a way to put one on my upstairs office window to entertain Bauer (me) during work. I also need a chopper but I may hate cleaning it more. I have been in the market for face spray and I keep seeing the Mario Bedescu so I think I just need to order it. I want it to feel refreshed after I travel. And I may need the drying rack for when my husband does BBQ stuff. Thanks for sharing so much good stuff!

  4. Oh I'm glad you liked the L'Oreal lash primer! I'm probably one of the million people who recommended it to you! Unfortunately I do not know a cruelty-free lash primer so if you find one you like please post an update!

  5. I have one of those veggie choppers and I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!

  6. We got a veggie chopper a few years ago for Christmas and I was just using it and thinking we need a new one because it's not super sharp anymore, but it makes chopping onions so much easier! I was kind of iffy about the MB drying lotion too-- I use it, but it definitely isn't some kind of miracle product like it seems to be for so many other people.

  7. We just upgraded to the iPhone 7 too so I might have to look into that! Would be so much easier. Also the chopper...I have yet to find one I actually like :(

  8. I need that vegetable chopper and drying rack! I run the dishwasher about once a week, so I still handwash a lot of day to day items. And how funny is that bird feeder with Millie - adorable <3

  9. I used to use an elf eyelash primer that I liked a lot. I don't anymore only because I wear mascara like 2x/month. Give the elf one a try though, can't beat $3.

I still love your piggy kitchen rug. So cute.

I've seen tons of reviews of the MB face spray but no one can tell me what it's actually supposed to do. Is it just a feel good face spray? When and how and why do you use it? I am so out of the loop.

  10. I use the Mario Badescu facial spray but I didn't know they had a drying serum. I use Burt's Bees for that kind of stuff.
I feel like I need that drying rack, those frames, and that adorable pig rug... lol!
    I'm 100% c.f. but I don't use a lash primer so I can't help ya out =/ Sorry, friend.
Off to buy that veggie chopper...

  11. I think I know a lot of people who eat meat, but not pig (my dad, my bff) so I don't think it's too weird. I think the mat is cute!
LOL at cat television, that's hilarious. Maybe I'll get one for my friend's cat for Christmas.

  12. I use that spot treatment and while it works REALLY well sometimes, other it does not. But I will take it for those times it does work. I got a chopper at Christmas, but it only makes really big chunks - I feel like yours is smaller - should have asked for that one! And I absolutely love when you show your cats at the window with that squirrel feeder. It cracks me up!

  13. I have that veggie chopper but I haven't used it in months because I cant stand cleaning the damn thing! That pig rug is sooooo cute!!!! I might have to check out that makeup bag because I always end up using the free gift with purchase ones I get from various cosmetic counters and it would be nice to have one that had a specific place for my brushes. That car bluetooth thing is genius and I wish I would have had that when I drove my Rogue because the cord drove me nuts. Now my car has bluetooth built in. It works maybe 75% of the time. Stupid technology. lol

  14. WHAT?! YOU DON'T LIKE BACON EITHER?! I'm telling you, soul sisters. Ha! I think bacon is disgusting! I seriously thought I was alone in the world. If you find a different eyelash primer that is cruelty-free let me know because I live and swear by that L'Oreal one.

  15. Max is extremely jealous of your kitties because he does not have bird tv! I don't know if it work on my patio though. I'll have to take a closer look. He loves some birdies, although like Millie he'd probably pounce and bang on the screen door, which he managed to pop out once. He's a big cat. :D I love the pig rug! But I do love bacon. :D

  16. I love the pig rug! In fact, when we were demolishing the old kitchen, I started buying and saving stuff for the "new" kitchen too.
I just ordered some samples of the Mario Badescu products last night. I liked reading your thoughts.

  17. I broke a tooth eating bacon, so I should hate it more, but I'm more meh towards bacon than anything.

After Christmas, Target had frames B1G1 and I stocked up. I've yet to print anything to fill said frames, but frames were acquired.

I use my food processor for chopping when I'm extra lazy. It's nice when I have to chop multiple things since it's so quick. It does generate more dishes, but meh.

  18. I read it all and like it all but Im zipping out of this post to see if I find that drying rack on Amazon. I swear i NEED IT! My apartment while nice and modern, does not have a dishwasher and I have the worst time drying shit on drying mats etc. Its literally what I need to make my life easier right now lol. Thanks Kris!

  19. I have to say, we have that Amazon Small electronics case & we love it. Oops. haha. We fit in a small tablet, an ipod. & some chargers & earbuds in there when we travel to Nashville. Just shows not everything works for everyone.

  20. That must have been so funny to see your cats going nuts over the birdfeeder, plus it's so awesome that they love something so simple, right! And don't worry, you're not the only one that doesn't like bacon. I have a friend that just doesn't like pork, so she doesn't eat bacon. That rug is super cute though, and perfect for your new kitchen!

  21. Holy crap that travel electronic case is TERRIBLE. I took it on our National Parks trip and wanted to burn it in a freaking fire after.

  22. The pig rug is tooooo cute. We had a chopper thing but broke it, womp womp.

  23. Ha ha ha, that bird feed thing is great for cats!! I want to buy one too! And I need a onion slasher too, my hands always smell awful after cutting onions

    ReplyDelete
  24. I feel like the cat tv is a hysterical purchase! Maybe a bit cruel to the cats I guess like flaunting what they can't have but as long as it entertains right!?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Every time I see those picture frames at Target but I have nowhere to put them. I really like that over the sink drying rack though!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm glad you gave the Badescu spray a good review. I'm almost out of my LUSH rose toner water (whatever that even is) and need a replacement but there is never a "simple" trip to LUSH and I know UTLA keeps the Badescu in travel sizes right at the counter but I've never just bought it. Going to try now!
ALSO I see your Goodreads list and Good Omens is on my TBR because I loved the American Gods show and figured I should try one of Gaiman's books. How do you like it?!
    Thanks for linking up!

  27. I love that pimple stuff, it really works. I too have that Mario Badescu stuff and at first I really really liked it but after a few weeks I noticed that my skin was drier. I stopped using it for a bit and my skin was much better. I do still use it as I really like the way it smells. I do also use it on my hair to fresher it up a bit. haha I think I need that drying rack for my sink, that is brilliant!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. ohhh I love review posts! That veggie thingy? So cool and love a drying rack for over the sink - genius!

  29. I am hooked on the Mario Badescu spray and use it before my makeup, to help blend foundation, to set my powder, before eyeshadow to prevent fall out... I just bought probably my fifth bottle yesterday.

  30. My first job was writing for a skin care company, and they swore by Avene, but I didn't like it for my skin - it felt heavy.

Ummm I need that mat remover comb. Jasper has long fur and coughs up hairballs all. the. time. Thanks for sharing!

  31. Love this! Looking into that birdfeeder, been wanting something like it! Just shared my cat essentials post today, so check that out. LOL. For cruelty free, all my makeup comes from 100% pure. LOVE LOVE LOVE so many things. I've recently started using Honest Beauty too. I think it's cruelty free. :) Like 87% sure. I'm sure it's on their site. I like the mascara, but honestly don't use the primer part much. Just don't need to/think to do it often. XO - Alexandra

  32. I've had that Mario Badescu drying lotion on my list for the longest time and I still haven't got it. Good to know that it kinda works. I used to have Origins one , it was like a clear gel that worked pretty well but it ran out. I've never used a mascara primer before, it's good to know that the L'Oreal one works but I'm also trying to get cruelty free stuff. Maybe Physicians Formula has one? I like their mascara.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I tried the Mario Badescu rose spray this month too! I didn't find it drying, but I didn't find it exceptional or anything either. I'm so glad you mentioned the Amazon electronics case- it was actually sitting in my Amazon cart haha. That bird feeder is such a good idea. My cat actually chirps back at the birds whenever he sees them! My go-to pimple aid is Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10. It's actually acne medication and works super fast.

  34. The over-the-sink drying rack is genius and so practical... Can't believe I'm not stumbling upon this because the traditional dish rack next to the sink is never pretty. Adore the pig rug! Can't wait to hear more about how the house renovations are coming along. xo Emily @ Martinis & Bikinis

  35. I need that drying rack! That is clever - but in the "why didn't I think of that" way.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, crap. I'm trying to cut back on spending, but I want just about ALL this stuff. The drying rack, the onion chopper, the mascara primer, the bluetooth speaker for sure! Do you have to charge it? Does it have a microphone too for phone calls? We have to be hands-free in WA when driving. My cord has a microphone, but this seems like less of a hassle! I love the bird feeder and your videos. Someone else had a squirrel in theirs and their dogs went crazy. Haha! I also bought that dumb electronics holder and hate it. It's so big I've never even used it.

  37. I need that bird feeder! For my cats... and my kids!

  38. Check out Divaderme.com for eyelash primer. I believe they carry it, and their ingredients are natural extracts. I have their mascara and eyelash extender, and seriously love it. I have a co-worker that doesn't like bacon either. I think you and her are the only two people. Don't worry, I'll eat all your portions of bacon. That bird feeder is pretty awesome. I think my cats would like it.

  39. I did a review last year on lash primers--a bunch of them. Might be something in there that you'd like. Plus, there's a drugstore version of the Mario Bodescu pimple thingy if you run out/decide to rebuy. Lemme know!

  40. SeneGence for miracle pimple stuff (spot on acne treatment) and primer (LashSense)! ;) Actually I like Mary Kay primer a lot but I'm not sure if it's cruelty free!
