Like I've mentioned a few times before, I am not a busy person, I don't enjoy being busy so I make my life not busy on purpose. But sometimes life just gets busy naturally, right? When that happens, I don't deal so well, and everything else falls by the wayside. Obviously with closing on our new house and all the work we are doing, not to mention moving and general life living, it's been busy over here recently. Unfortunately that leaves little time for reading. I have not finished a book in almost 3 weeks. Very abnormal for me. Normally, when my reading mojo goes up and down, it's normal and okay and I just let it be. But when life forces my reading to go down, I get antsy and I am really feeling like a drug addict who needs her fix.. you know? I just want to sit down and read a book! But then.. life. Packing, unpacking, walls to take down, rooms to paint, doors to sand and the list goes on and on. It's great! We are in a house! It's amazing! But I want to read. You know.
A Conjuring of Light - V.E. Schwab - 5 Stars
final book in the shades of magic trilogy
I pre-ordered this book - which I never do - because I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I tried to savour it, I just adore these characters and her writing. It's a weird book/trilogy - I'm plodding along, kind of into it, kind of enjoying it, and then there is a line or word or something that just makes me squeal and think to myself bloody hell I love these books. I highly recommend this series if it sounds like your jam. The books are not like anything I've ever read before and the characters are some of my favourites of all time.

parents leave their baby at home while they attend a party..
I straight up could not put this down.Which is funny because when I first heard about this book I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it - it draws obvious parallels to Maddie McCann's story, if you are at all familiar with it. That being said, I think the synopsis is the only thing that is similar to Maddie's story - that we know of, considering it is 10 years later and she has not been found. Anyway, this book was unputdownable, bloody crazy characters and a million twists.

paranormal historical romance
I don't know if I would say I couldn't put these down, but I did thoroughly enjoy them. They are both right up my book-alley. I liked the characters, the stories were unique, interesting, sexy and funny. It was light but not ridiculous. If you like books like these, I recommend. It reminded me a teensy bit of Soulless.
YA story about a devil librarian
This was thoroughly enjoyable. It was silly, but hilarious and interesting. It's definitely heavy on the YA and it's not serious at all but like I said, I enjoyed it immensely. Made me laugh and smile and wonder what was going to happen. Not like anything I'd read before. Recommend if you're looking for a light read.

Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me - Lily Collins - 4 Stars
memoir/self help type book
I expected more of a memoir/personal stories from Lily, but it's a mix of that with a dash of inspiring/self help kind of talk. Although I appreciated that stuff because sometimes, even though you've heard it a million times, you need to hear it again. It was super short and a bit repetitive, but overall enjoyable if you're a fan or need a little encouragement.

teenager moves to italy after her mother dies to get to know her father
I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover (or title), but I totally had different expectations for this book based on those things. I love a good YA book but I had no idea this was YA. Anyway. It was cute enough, passed the time just fine. Light and fluffy. Some of the lines were ridiculous though 'my voice was like weak tea' or 'his face was as bland as whipped cream'. Um, what?
Talking as Fast as I Can - Lauren Graham - 4 Stars
gilmore girls focused memoir
When I read Lauren's fiction book, I wondered how much Lorelai was her or if she was trying to be Lorelai. This book made me think that as well - do you really talk like that, or are you trying to be a character we all know and love? It kind of got on my nerves a bit at the beginning, like she was trying too hard to be funny/like her character, but eventually it settled in nicely and I found myself really enjoying it. I liked learning more about her and she is a great writer. I hope she writes another fiction book - perhaps not one about acting though.
She really got my hopes up for more Gilmore Girls. Because seriously, cliffhanger.

The Star-Touched Queen - Roshani Chokshi - 2 Stars
indian mythology fairytale-esque kind of retelling
I am in the minority with this one. Just didn't love it. I wanted to hit the main character in the head. I get why the story had to go that way, and I've read similar ones, but like, it has to make sense? Most of her choices just weren't logical. I'm trying not to be mean, it obviously wasn't so bad that I gave up, I was curious to see what happened, I just wish it was better. Ugh. That sounds awful. I feel bad. Just not for me. I also got the second one from netgalley, A Crown of Wishes but I will be skipping it.
Received from NetGalley
Technically nothing because life, but according to goodreads I am part way through these 2:Hopefully life will calm down again soon and the house to do list will get shorter so I can get some reading time in before the next link up! Read anything decent lately?
Shades of Magic books sound interesting and I think I have The Couple Next Door on my TBR. I've read mixed reviews but yours I trust! lol. I'm on the wait list for Lauren Grahams audiobook with my library.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I need to read Evil Librarian because the idea of a devil librarian just sounds so hilarious to me :-D
ReplyDeleteMy life always seems to be busy. I don't make it that way, it just seems to happen every single month.
Behind Closed Doors is an excellent book!
ReplyDeletePriorities right? House projects... books.... how does one decide???
ReplyDeleteKRISTEN. I just finished a Conjuring of Light. What a great read. I'm sad it's over.
ReplyDeleteI've also read Firelight, I just put the second one in the series on my hold list at the library. I'll have to see if it's as good.
I want to read the Couple Next Door, but I haven't had the chance yet :)

Oh I LOVE A Conjuring of Light, easily my best read of the last two months. I really enjoy V.E Schwab's books and can't wait to get stuck into more of them.
ReplyDeleteHaha, despite your review I'm still intrigued by The Star-Touched Queen. I know nothing about Indian mythology, so I'm adding it anyway. And huzzah for the historical paranormal! Obviously I must add that.
ReplyDeleteI have The Couple Next Door on my list but I didn't know what the secret was going to be. Now I'm more intrigued... I'm torn on Lauren Graham's book. I have a bit of Gilmore fatigue post-revival and I think I would be annoyed if she was too Lorelei-Like too.
ReplyDeleteOh I'm glad you talked about Lauren Graham's book! It's been on my list for awhile but I haven't read it yet because I was kind of afraid of all the things you said! I'm not sure I'd really enjoy reading a book at the Lorelai speaking pace. Glad you ultimately enjoyed it but not putting it at the top of my to-read list yet!
ReplyDeleteI am dying to read A Conjuring of Light. I need to get to the library this weekend and either check it out or put it on hold. I'm dying to know what happens next. Hopefully now that you're in the new house, you can find some time to read! I am dying to find a nice comfy chair for my bedroom that I can turn into a little reading nook. I have the room if I rearrange some things, so I'm gonna be on the look out for it. No idea what that has to do with your post but just thought I'd share! lol
ReplyDeleteEvil Librarian just looks funny from the title & cover alone.
ReplyDeleteI wondered the same thing about Lauren Graham
WE FINISHED MISS FISHER. *sobs* I was looking at the books, but I'm not sure if I want to read them just yet. Maybe after some separation from the series... ? I dunno. I loved it though. Interesting about Lauren Graham's book. I bought it in Feb. but am worried to crack it open. I have a lot of feelings about the revival and I'm mostly left feeling "meh" minus the Cliff hanger. I guess. Intrigued at least. Good to know about the VE Schwab trilogy! Also, I think that firelight and moon glow sound interesting. I put the first one on my TBR. I'm not sure if I would like The Couple Next Door... so I've been avoiding it... I want to like mysterious/thriller-y things.. and I enjoy it when I do... but I never want to pick them up. HA. Bummer about Star Touched Queen. Oh well! XO - Alexandra
ReplyDeleteSimply Alexandra: My Favorite Things
I couldn't put down The Couple Next Door either but ultimately ended up not liking it, mostly because of the writing style and the characters. Been having the same no time to read problem lately - also due to house hunting. While we just got an offer accepted I'm out of town a lot the next 2 weeks and don't like to take physical books with me, which is a problem when I take 10 books checked out of the library. Totally feel ya on just wanting to read!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see you liked The Couple Next Door. I've almost read it a couple of times, but haven't committed to it. Maybe I will now!
ReplyDeleteI have Phil Collins' book, so I would love to check out Lily's as well. Hope you get your reading mojo back soon once everything calms down <3
ReplyDeleteGreen Fashionista
I loved Lauren Graham's book! I've seen her interviewed so I do think she's just like that, but I could see where you're coming from about her trying too hard. Couple Next Door is on my list!
ReplyDeleteThe Shades of Magic series is on my Nook- they were a set of "daily deals" a few months ago and it seems like everyone is finishing it up...so I should probably start, haha.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to need to out that Trilogy on my list. I freaking love series!
ReplyDeleteSamesies. When I hit a reading wall, I am totally okay with letting it ride. When life makes it hard for me to read, I am like someone who needs a fix.
ReplyDeleteHoping you can get a few hours here or there!
Is that a library book drop? Or a donation book drop? Haha that is a lot of books. I definitely have The Couple Next Door on my to read list. Lily Collins sounds familiar but I don't know who she is - model? Ooh I didn't even think about whether Lauren Graham was trying to be like Lorelai when I read it. I loved it and I don't think so, but I hope not. I guess either way, I'd still read a book by Lorelai Gilmore anyway haha. Good luck getting through a Kate Morton book aahhhhh. I know you've read them before but I feel like those last forever even when you're not struggling to get time to read.
ReplyDeleteThe Couple Next Door was on my library holds for ages and then I just kinda decided I didn't want to read it anymore...but your review encourages me to maybe check it out someday! I totally relate to how you are feeling about reading. I tend to feel that way over Christmas holidays most years because I spend about 2 weeks at home with my husband and children doing social things at night and I get NO books read and lose my mind. Haha. I hope you get all settled in with a nice bright reading nook soon (especially so you can finish The Secret Keeper - I LOVED that book!!!). I just finished the first in the Shades of Magic trilogy so I'm glad to know they get even better. They are really interesting characters so far and I love the writing. I think I'm going to do Lauren Graham's new book on audio after I finish my current audiobook because apparently it is fun to hear her read it. Evil Librarian sounds like fun!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm someone who doesn't like to busy either and everyone always thinks that weird. But I don't! I was going to start the Shades of Magic trilogy at the end of last year until I realized the final book would be out shortly. I waited on the assumption that I will love them and want to binge them!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed The Couple Next Door. Didn't love but liked a lot.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually really tired of celebrity self-help books. But since she's Phil Collins's daughter, I won't hate on her too much.
I think I need to pick up Lauren Graham's book! Love & Gelato sounds cute, but that weak tea quote is just ridiculous!
ReplyDeleteCould you listen to audio books while you're doing the painting and unpacking? Just a thought and it will help pass the time! I enjoyed The Couple Next Door. I love the title of the book Evil Librarian, even if it doesn't seem like my type of book!
ReplyDeleteI saw Talking as Fast as I Can in the library the other day and I didn't know if I should pick it up or not. Sounds like I should have!
ReplyDelete...do you carry a box back and forth to the library? Hahaha. Despite your current busy season, you are my reading idol. Lol.
ReplyDeleteOoooooh- are you starting in on the Miss Fisher books now?? That's genius!
I know exactly that feeling that if I don't get enough reading time I'm so antsy and start to CRAVE it.
ReplyDeleteA little curious about Lauren Graham's book although that's not usually my cup of tea. I wonder the same thing about people who play the same character on a show for a long time - How much it rubs off on them or vice versa...
The way everybody talks about the Shades of Magic series makes me want to read it so badly! I think that I have the first one on my Nook, but I haven't had the chance to pick it up yet. Hopefully I will soon! I've wanted to read The Couple Next Door for a while, and I hope that I do. I love a good mystery/thriller and this sounds like it includes it all. And even though it sounds cheesy, I know that I'd love Love & Gelato! I love all of those mushy teeny-bopper books and I just don't know why! Your house is coming along great, and I bet that you'll be back to reading full time before you know it!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the Couple Next Door even though some didn't seem to find it intriguing enough or that the plot line was spotty. But as a newbie to books (audiobooks) I enjoyed the twist and turns of this mystery story.
ReplyDeleteI almost picked up The Couple Next Door at my last library day. I should've grabbed it!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited for y'all getting into your new house. I have no doubt you will be settled soon, curled up into a lounge with a good book and kitties all around!
The Couple Next Door sounds interesting. I may have to check it out. Good luck with getting settled in the new house!
ReplyDeleteHooray for being in the house! I hope you find more time for reading. Life just feels wrong when there's no time to get lost in a good book.
ReplyDeleteYeah there's been zero reading for me recently, but now I'm on holiday I'm back at it. Except reading this Culture Shock: Australia book that is supposed to prepare you for being an immigrant to Australia but is just full of stuff I know already, and it's super repetitive too. I wasn't joking when I said the sentence about Miss Fisher was the highlight of the book! So once I'm done with that I'm looking forward to moving onto something new. I think I have Lauren Graham's book as an audiobook which could be interesting, depending on how fast she talks! Good luck getting the house list down and the book list up :)
ReplyDeleteI have a bag of books I want to donate or resell or something, but I've been too lazy to take it anywhere, I need to finally just take care of it so the books can get a new home! Love & Gelato sounds cute, but I LOLed at those lines you shared- too funny.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you liked The Couple Next Door - it's been on my "maybe" list because it's gotten mixed reviews, but I will definitely go after it now! I felt the same way as you did about the Lauren Graham! And yes, waiting for news on more GG now thanks to her ;)
ReplyDeleteI really want to read Lauren's book! I'm midway through A Darker Shade of Magic - loving it! I'm glad you liked the final book so much.
ReplyDelete-Lauren
I didn't realize until reading another linkup post today that A Darker Shade of Magic was a series. I'm not typically especially enticed by series but I like that I've heard lots of good things about this one! Doesn't seem like my usual genre but I'm trying to let that stop me less from picking certain books up.
ReplyDeleteI've seen so much about The Couple Next Door but I honestly had no idea that's what it was about. Might check it out now.
Totally agree about Lauren Graham's book. By the end my takeaway was that she put so much of herself into Lorelai, not that she was "acting" in this book, ya know? And I am so with you, didn't you notice the cliffhanger?!
i really want to read Lauren Graham's book but now im not too sure it'll be worth my time. maybe i'll see if there's an audio version available at my library. xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteI share the same feelings about The Couple Next Door. It really hooked me from the start. I'm adding Unfiltered by Lily Collins because I always enjoy a celebrity "memoir", even if they are only 25 with their whole lives ahead of them :) It's my weakness!
ReplyDeleteHope you're enjoying The Secret Keeper! I didn't think I'd like it at all, but it pulled me in.
ReplyDeleteWhen I get stressed, I stop reading and start re-reading my 5-10 favorites.
Haha I totally know what you mean with being in the minority when not liking a book because you just don't agree with the characters decisions. Or sometimes a book could just have been so much better (maybe we're a bit harsher on books when we read and review so many). I also know how you feel with being too busy in life to be able to read -- we're moving in a month or two and I'm not looking forward to it. Hope you find some time to relax with a book :)
ReplyDeleteI have been on a reading roll! You would be so proud. I so need to find my library card and start going. I haven't been to the library in ages, I think I owe them a late fee from like 10 years ago and never paid it which is why I stopped going. I wouldn't say I'm a busy person but I do work alot. Probably too much.
ReplyDeleteThe Couple Next Door and Evil Librarian are going on my list!
ReplyDeleteOoh The Couple Next Door sounds really good! I've been slacking with reading again too. I can't wait to hear/see more of your new place!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the new house! I've been enjoying seeing your instagram stories with all of the renovations, you guys are so pro at everything! The Couple Next Door turned out much better than I expected it to! I was very into it and didn't really expect that outcome. I recently read Behind Her Eyes and the ending was seriously unexpected, everyone's been saying that you cannot predict it and they were right. Such a creepy ending!
ReplyDeleteSO many good books! I just finished a really random series that is so not what I would normally pick up - but my sister left them at our house and I had finished all of my current reads when I found it and once I read the first book and realised it was part of a series, I had to read them all!
ReplyDeleteLove & Gelato sounds like a great light read, will be adding that to my list! I completely agree with you about Lauren Graham's book, she did remind me more of Lorelei, but I didn't really realize it until you just mentioned that!
ReplyDeleteTotally adding the couple next door to my "to-read" list. I'm currently reading Idaho (Emily Ruskovich) which I love. I'm slightly partial since the setting is right where my parent's lake house is though...
ReplyDeleteDefinitely want to read The Couple Next Door!! MY reading got put on hold because of school, but hoping to start up here soon once the semester ends!
ReplyDeleteI want to read Lauren Graham's Talking as Fast as I Can book! I think I'll really love it! Though I'm curious how much of the book she wrote too!
ReplyDelete
