I might be all organised with packing for longer trips, but I am not with weekend trips. I always pack last minute and just throw a bunch of things in a bag, especially if it's a road trip because there is no limit. Unfortunately, I couldn't bring Millie.
I made the 9 hour drive to Richmond on Friday and it was thankfully pretty uneventful. I have never done that long a drive on my own, so it's nice to know I can, though I wouldn't be sad if I never did it again, ha. I listened to music when it was dark and a book when the sun came out. Crunchy snacks and chewing gum also kept me from feeling tired, so thanks for all the suggestions everyone!
We hit up the expo to pick up our packets and whatnot, and then went for dinner.
^ the one on the left just makes me laugh so I had to share it.
Saturday was the race so we were up bright and early. From what I could tell, it was a pretty big race and I thought it was really well organised.
Like I mentioned in my last race recap, I'm not really one for details when talking about my races - I ran, sometimes it was good, sometimes it was bad, I was happy when it was over because of the food. I stayed with the girls for about 3 miles before slowing down, my goal for this one was just to run the whole thing (I ran 10 miles for Urban Bourbon and ran/walked the rest) which I did. Time wise, I just wanted to beat Urban Bourbon, if only by a second.
^ this is the first race I have ever gotten a blanket for - isn't it awesome? You can see how much we all loved them.
As for how I went, I beat my Urban Bourbon time by a few minutes, which I am stoked about. It was a good race, I felt pretty good and the course was pretty and entertaining. What more could you ask for?
After the race we headed back to the hotel to clean up before heading out to lunch. Everyone else left after lunch and I stayed an extra night because of the long drive. I meant to go to sleep early but Wreck It Ralph and then Pretty Woman captured my attention and I did not get enough sleep at all.
The drive down/sideways/whichever direction I went was easy as pie and I didn't feel tired at all, but the first few hours of the drive back were awful. I was so tired, my eyes were so heavy and I could feel my head nodding. I stopped at a gas station as soon as I felt like that, splashed some water on my face and bought everything that looked like it would help me stay awake.
I am not a coffee drinker, but I figured I could stomach one if it kept me awake, and thankfully it did and I didn't have to resort to the other things - the guy selling it all to me was like 'um, miss, you probably shouldn't take all this at once'. I was just trying to be prepared! But like I said, the coffee drink more than did the trick and I got a second one a few hours later. I still thought it tasted gross and it did not miraculously turn me into a coffee drinker, which is a good thing apparently because several people advised me that my drink choice wasn't really coffee. It sure tasted like coffee to me, and it did the trick which is all that matters. I enjoyed the chocolate milk I had afterwards even more.
I fibbed to KC about what time I left so he was expecting me around dinner but I surprised him before lunch. Then I did absolutely nothing for the rest of the day, and it was great.
And because I like to see all my times together:

I am done with races for 2016 - bring on 2017!
Oh and of course, it wouldn't be a race for me if I didn't do this:
Happy Monday to you, hope you have a fabulous week!
ps. Happy Birthday Sara! Love you!
Kristen! You're amazing - that time is fabulous, and you can see how much stronger you're getting! As an aside - want to convene offline and set up a race together this coming year??? I'll have my mama watch the boys while Ryan's deployed and meet you! (Maybe a marathon?! O.o)
ReplyDeleteI'm the same when I pack for weekend trips - throw it all in and hope i have everything lol! I love what you ate pre race - that alone is worth running LOL! So glad you were able to run with the blogger ladies - at least in the same race!! Such a fun weekend! xo, biana -BlovedBoston
ReplyDeletei'm so the same with road trips. i'll be driving for thanksgiving and i'm like yep, throw it all in the car haha. what a fun race! and yay for blanket. and nice you could surprise the husband with a little bit of an early arrival. fun weekend indeed!
ReplyDeletexoxo cheshire kat
YAYAYAYAY!! you did amazing! i actually dont know what an "amazing time" is for a marathon but that looks good to me! if that were me, you'd see DNC since i'd probably give up and take a cab to the finish line.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like so much fun! Although I notice you did not share the bloody toe. :P I can't imagine a 9 hour solo drive. I did 5 once and that was rough. I always end up calling people to keep my brain awake and engaged (although audiobooks help too).
ReplyDeleteAWESOME TIME! Look at you knocking off so much time in just one year of half marathons. You did great! I love that y'all do a half marathon runcation every year... what a great way to spend time exploring a new city :) Glad your race went well for you. Must be a good feeling to know you're done with half marathons for the year!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun weekend/race! You girls are all so cute- and always motivating and inspiring me!! I always say I don't want to do another half ever again... and then I read a post by you or Tracy and it makes me consider it lol! I'm glad you survived your solo road trip, I'm LOLing at all your energy drinks/items and thinking about the guy ringing up your order like WHOA!
ReplyDeleteSo, I understand all the beverages, but the Clorox wipes? Were those a gas station buy? Or just already hanging out in your front seat?
ReplyDelete4 minutes off your time in just a short amount of time is fantastic, as is running the whole thing! I think a long term goal of yours is to run sub-2? If that's still the case you're well on your way!
What fun! I have never driven that long by myself, way to go girl!! Great job on the half marathon. You rock girl!! You rock!!
ReplyDeleteObviously, I love this and everything about it--except the part where your drive back wasn't so great. That picture of all your stay awake supplies made me laugh though! So does the picture of us at the expo, haha. So great to see you this weekend and I'm so proud of you for having a great race! Was awesome to line up with you again, and hopefully we'll all do it again soon!
ReplyDeleteOoh sounds like a great little weekend trip. I somehow do OK packing for weekend trips recently. I've been able to say, you'll be gone 2 days... you don't need another outfit. LOL. Who knows. :P Great time on the run and glad you enjoyed it. LOL - don't drink all of that at once. I have never driven that long by myself either! XO - Alexandra

Woohoo! You always give me so much motivation to get my butt of the couch and to the gym or to run. Congrats on shaving 4 mins off your time, that's awesome! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing your race with a good time! I have such a hate/love relationship with solo long drives, I mostly hate them but every once and awhile I enjoy a good road trip. I love that the guy advised you not to drink it all at once and happy it did the trick to get you home safely!
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to travel for a race but too nervous to do it.
ReplyDeleteYou were with Tracy!!!!! That made me smile. Did you hear she was coming to Louisville for the Ironman?!?!?!?!?! We should all get together when she's here!
Great job on the race.
& yep, what is a race picture without the tongue?
... your turn to coffee is starting, whether you want to admit it or not ;) haha (kidding) But seriously, my coffee addiction started slowly by tasting & trying it for reasons to perk up. Cue the HARD CORE ADDICTION a few years later.
Congrats on your race!! Sounds like such a fun weekend. The longest I've ever road tripped by myself is like 4 hours maybe.. way to go with 9! That's impressive.
ReplyDeleteYeah, girl! Look at you beating your times. Looks like you had a fun trip, minus the long drive. I was cracking up with your coffee in the car because I have to do the same thing. Long drives are such a struggle, especially when you're by yourself.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your race! That is so awesome. Too bad Millie couldn't come with you - what is it about cat pictures that just instantly brighten the day?!
ReplyDeleteThat is a long drive! I go back and forth between Denver/Durango frequently which is 6-7 hours and I'm so sick of driving by the end every time! Sounds like a really fun weekends and congrats on another good race, It always feels good when you beat your goal - A new 2nd fastest time ever!
ReplyDeleteI love that you're improving your time in such a low-key, understated way. Haha! That pasta looks amazing! You got home before lunch? Dang, girl. You left early!
ReplyDeleteYou go, Kristen! So proud of you! It's been a long time since I've done any type of road trip and nothing where I drove 9 hours by myself. I always drank lots of diet coke and sang. Loudly and off key. My longest road trip was about 5-6 hours and I was practically hoarse by the time I got there. :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part about your race was that you were happy when it was over because of the food, I may have to co-sign that for future races - so true! Such a fabulous weekend, and glad you did well on the road trip :-D
ReplyDeleteGreen Fashionista
Look at your beating your time and not stressing about it! Love it! And food would certainly be my motivation for finishing a race. So cool that you got to do another one with Alyssa and Tracy! Birmingham is only about a six hour drive....just saying :) You know, so you can cross Alabama off the top of list where I know it is.
ReplyDeleteI went for a run the other day and thought of you. I really love the feeling when I'm done but it's so painful throughout. I really need to find a running buddy.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on beating your race time and accomplishing your goals! I seriously don't know how you did that long of a drive by yourself! I probably would have been nodding off as well and would have needed coffee or something else to keep me awake!
ReplyDelete"I was happy when it was over because of the food." <-- me, every single time I exercise.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on a great race!! 9 hours of driving alone is hard, especially when you are already tired to begin with. When I lived a province over, I often made the 12 hour drive to my hometown on my own and I do kind of miss those long drives...of course, I wouldn't ever want to do it now with a toddler lol!
ReplyDeleteFabulous weekend! Great job on the race, I'm glad you girls got it in together.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way with any trips that we drive to. I bring so many bags and just throw everything in. It's a little ridiculous actually. I just started packing for a drive down to Florida and have 1 suitcase and 2 duffel bags full so far.
ReplyDeleteLove a good runcation! And go you!
ReplyDeleteGo YOU for making the best of that 9-hour drive...I agree it's pretty daunting doing it alone but you had your eye on the prize and sounds like the run was a great reward!!
ReplyDeleteWay to go with the race, girl! That is an awesome time!
ReplyDeleteWhat a busy weekend!
Woohoo for rocking that 9 hour drive by yourself both ways AND beating your last race's time!! I honestly don't think I could do that long of a drive by myself because I need human connection way sooner than that. Glad the coffee (or whatever we wanna call that) helped keep you awake and you got to surprise KC!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteI drink coffee but I hate anything that involves cold coffee.
awesome job on beating your time! i always wonder... what inspires you to run races? I am just always so curious. It's something I'll never be able to do (with a metal ankle and all!)
ReplyDeleteWoop race face photo! Congrats on the time, that's awesome! So glad you're hitting your goals. That must be a good feeling :)
ReplyDelete9 hours is a long time, I'm not surprised you felt a bit sleepy. That's a miserable feeling so I'm glad the coffee did the trick although yuck coffee. I bet Millie would have kept you awake!
Well done girl! And of course it wouldn't be a post without Millie writhing around in a box. Lol! That's what I love about cats, they'll find just about anything to play in and have a good time. :)
ReplyDeleteYou crushed your goal and got so much of your previous time again! That's so awesome and it sounds like a great race. So glad your drives were uneventful-- love all the stuff you picked up to help keep you awake on your drive back, haha.
ReplyDeleteYAY for beating your time!
ReplyDeleteWhen I would make the drive from MD to NC and back, it was the longest trip of my lifeeeeee. Lots of car karaoke and sweet tea and sometimes coffee. These days, I'm much happier being a passenger.
LOL I love that the guy told you not to drink all of that at once. So glad you had a great little weekend trip!!
ReplyDeleteThe race blanket is awesome!
ReplyDeleteBRAVO! Well done. Your outlook on these races are always the way I think I'd be. Except I hate to run. Ha! Millie is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteWay to go girl, sounds like a really good race! Glad you enjoyed your time with the girls too. Any good audiobook recommendations? Lol. Glad you had a safe drive too, that caffeine looks intense lol!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! The race looks like fun and it's even more exciting that you got to explore another state. After our drive here which took around 12 hours I think I'll avoid road trips for a while lol. Feeling sleepy and having to drive is not a fun time!
ReplyDeleteAwwww thanks love! I've been behind on your blog, so I just saw your bday message! love you :) -Sara
ReplyDeleteSuch a fun weekend! And girl, I love that you and I pack so similarly for driving trips vs flying trips! ;)
ReplyDeleteWell that Millie pic just made my day!
ReplyDeleteLOL! I hate when I feel like gas station clerks are judging me for my energy drink/poptart/cookie purchases ;) that is too funny. You girls are such an inspiration!! :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the race time! Looks like a lot of fun! How neat you got a blanket as a little keepsake! I don't know I'd like that long of a drive myself! Kudos to you!
ReplyDeleteI have to say, as much as I personally hate running, your races and recaps make it seem like a pretty fun hobby! It's social, you get to check out new places in a unique way, etc. And congrats on beating your previous race time!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the race time! You girls look like you had a blast. Also how tall are you Kristen? I swear I never realized you were so tall - love it!!!
ReplyDelete2:19!! Great job girl. I should probably run another half. I love that you all got to run together - that's so fun. It's so neat how we form friendships these days.
ReplyDeleteAlso - 9 hours is no joke. We're now 12 hours from our families and I made the drive by myself with my pooch when we closed on our house. Holllly Cow. It's tough.
