I had been wanting to read The Love That Split the World by Emily Henry ever since I saw it on Netgalley.. Unfortunately, Netgalley declined to give it to me, and I always feel like I should boycott books when Netgalley does that, like fine - you don't want to give it to me, I won't read it at all!
But then I got it in my Owl Crate for my birthday, so I decided it was fate and I had to read it. I forgive you Netgalley.
So what is it even about? From Goodreads:
I have never watched Friday Night Lights, but The Time Traveler's Wife is one of my all time favourites, so it definitely sounded like my kind of book.
So what did I think of it?
What I love is when I find a book that I constantly think about when I'm not reading it. Like what is going to happen? I wonder what this means? How will this be resolved? Like there are some books that you know what the end game is - lady heroine and prince charming get together, or the murderer is caught etc etc but some books, as I am reading them, I am thinking how are you gonna wrap this shit up, author person? This was one of those books. It wasn't life changing or mind blowing, but it was cute and I liked it, and I couldn't figure out where the hell it was going in some aspects.
I really, really, really disliked the ending. Sometimes a vague ending works. SOMETIMES IT DOES NOT. I kinda get why she did it, like she didn't want to be predictable, and either way people would have been pissed off, but as an author I'd rather piss off 50% of people vs pissing off all the people.
I didn't know it was set in Kentucky, which was kinda cool. I loved that it was set in KY but not in your face about it. Sometimes it takes me out of a book when authors include too many 'inside jokes' or things that only locals would get, and there was nothing in this book (besides school names) that were super specific to KY.
What was super funny to me was that in a book about time travel (kind of? I really didn't think it was super about time travel like, say The Time Traveler's wife), I managed to find a couple of quotes that spoke to me as an expat (or just, you know.. a person):
Funny thing about belonging to two worlds: Sometimes you feel like you belong in zero.
“I don’t know. It’s hard being surrounded by people—generally good people—who don’t get it,
who think I’m uptight and weird whenever things bother me. I mean, sometimes it’s like people
assume I’m like them in ways I’m not, and that sucks, but other times they think I’m different in ways I
don’t feel different, and that sucks too.”
So overall, honestly? Out of enjoyment, it was like 4-5 stars until the ending, which made me cranky. But overall, good book.
Would I recommend it?
Do you like YA? Yes. If not, no.
Our next book is Exposure to a Billionaire by Ann Menke.
Check out last month's post to see how you can get a free copy of the book!
If you read The Love That Split The World, we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments or link up below!
Ugh I hate when you like a book then HATE the ending. It can completely ruin the whole book. Sometimes I feel like authors get lazy with the ending. So disappointing <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes
ReplyDeleteWhat a bummer about the ending - I recently read a book and the epilogue made me want to stab my eyes out - I decided to ignore it lol. I sitll look forward to reading this book :)
ReplyDeleteYou had me at Friday night lights!
ReplyDeleteYou had me so excited about this book until you talked about the ending. That sucks!!! I hate when authors do that crap. Don't they know I need closure?!?! Can't wait to get started on Exposure to a Billionaire! I got my copy yesterday :)
ReplyDeleteI hate getting invested in a book and then disliking the ending.
ReplyDeleteI got my Billionaire book in the mail yesterday!
I really hate vague endings. Call me basic but I want everything tied up neatly where I can see it. The plot sounds really interesting though...
ReplyDeleteSo fun that this ended up being in your Owlcrate after you had wanted to read it! Along with the pretty cover it sounds like such a good book & I'm glad you still enjoyed it even if the ending wasn't your favorite.
ReplyDeleteAlways working on my Summer reading list and I know you are my go to person to start with!
ReplyDeleteI hate vague endings. I like it when everything is all nice and neat at the end. Even if it's sad, as long as it's finished.
ReplyDeleteSo funny story...
ReplyDeleteI totally signed up to receive a free copy of this book and it came yesterday. But I totally forgot I signed up. So I FREAKED OUT yesterday to my husband and was like, "Look, I got a free book to review! I'm so cool!" Which... that's all still true. But I totally forgot I'd signed up to receive it. Oh well. Haha. I've already started it and enjoy it so far! Haha!
I HATE that when you are totally loving a book and then the ending just makes you mad. It's like, did I like this book or not? It does sound interesting, but if the ending is going to make me cranky I might just stay away. I don't know if I could handle that in my life right now. lol!
ReplyDeleteThat is the worst when a book that you're enjoying has a crappy ending! To be honest, I've been so caught up with other books and binge-watching Gilmore Girls that this one totally fell off my radar - I'm adding it to my reading list now because it still sounds cute enough to read!
ReplyDeleteI hate when the ending isn't the best... I just read a book like that & its such a let down.
ReplyDeleteI just got an email yesterday for that book... I've got to go get it for free now.
I was actually going to email you to talk about the book ... and that ending. I'm glad I wasn't the only who disliked it. To me, it felt like she was going for "artsy" when being a bit more cut and dried would have actually resonated stronger. It also bothered me a bit because my initial interpretation of it, which I don't think was what the author actually intended, was not a message that I would actually want YA readers embrace. I thought Emily Henry had some beautiful passages and am interested to see what else she writes, but as a whole the book was only so-so for me. I never really bought into Beau and Natalie having a love strong enough to "split the world" and I'm the type of person who wants to believe. Oh, I'm glad we can still get the next book for free because I completely forget to put in my request! Yay!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing worse when you finish a book and you don't like the ending. Oh I have been there so many times. It's such a let down.
ReplyDeleteyeah the ending got me too. I enjoyed it... up until the end. SO MUCH POTENTIAL.

So we basically said the same thing. Good read - bad ending. Yup!
ReplyDeleteI really liked this book! The ending wasn't my favorite, but I thought it felt right for this book.
ReplyDeleteIt's rare that my distaste for an ending will sour the book for me...it might not suit me, but I feel like it wasn't my ending to write, so it obviously suited the author.
ReplyDeleteI LOL'd at the netgalley thing because I feel the same.
Lol I feel the same way whenever I get a rejection on Netgalley. Its too bad that the ending was bad, that's the worst.
ReplyDelete1. I love the cover of this book.
ReplyDelete2. I've put off subscribing to Owl Crate b/c I didn't want to pay so much for shipping, but I think I may just bite the bullet.
3. I can't STAND how overused the ambiguous ending has become. Like you said, it definitely works sometimes, but it depends on the story.
4. Those quotes!!! I 100% relate.
This story sounds interesting. If I find it out here, I'll give it a read!
it really is becoming overused - it's like authors are afraid of offending people. i'd rather an ending that i hated if it was specific vs an ambiguous ending. rude.
Deletehope you like owl crate!
So, you got me all excited to read this...especially the bit about it being set in KY, until you said the ending sucks. So, nope, sorry. Can't do it.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, I got my book the other day, I had requested a paper copy & it was pretty much the best surprise for a Monday! I just finished up the book it took me all April to read. So, I think tomorrow I'm just going to jump right in.
I just started this book, and I'm determined to finish it this week! So far I'm liking it, but I'll make sure to keep in mind that the ending might not be my favorite! I also love the idea of Owl Crate since I love YA fiction. I might have to check it out...
ReplyDeleteI think I heard about this book from All the Books because it's on my TBR. Maybe from you? I don't know anymore.
ReplyDeleteI'm not in a huge rush to read it. Ambiguous or bad endings don't necessarily ruin a book for me but I do have a habit of sometimes remembering the awful ending more than the rest of the book.
The worst...being so excited about a book and then the ending being a flop! That's definitely an interesting mix - from friday night lights to time travelers wife!!
ReplyDeleteI really, really enjoyed this book! I can't stop thinking about the ending, but I'm glad I decided to sleep on it because I'm not as ticked off with it as I initially was. I think I was more confused than anything. And I do definitely prefer a concrete ending, but I can appreciate the symbolism of this one. Definitely an interesting concept for a book, and while time travel can confuse the hell out of me, I do really enjoy it. Also, how have you not watched Friday Night Lights?! You MUST!! Seriously, do it. It's only 5 seasons, so you can do it! ;) I don't even like Football, but this show actually made me like it. Plus, everyone deserves to know Tim Riggins :)
ReplyDeleteNooo, I hate books with a crappy ending. I always joke to Jesse that I want to rewrite the ending when that happens, haha! :P
ReplyDeleteI love books that you get sucked into and cant stop thinking about, but really hate crappy endings! Ugh!

Upbeat Soles
What is Netgalley? And I hate endings like that! I want everything wrapped up in a pretty pink bow with no ambiguity!
ReplyDeleteEvelina @ Fortunate House
this book is 100% going to be my jam, I can tell. excited to get my hands on it!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh! This sounds like something right up my alley! I'll have more free time coming up and i'm MOST excited about having more time to read!!
ReplyDeleteLove your review - I've never heard of this book before but you totally intrigued me when you said you were thinking about it even when not reading it. That's my very favorite thing with good books! Sorry you didn't like the ending - that's the worse when you enjoy a book but the ending is disappointing.

This is already on my to-read list. I'm disappointed to hear that it has a crappy ending, but you know I'm going to read it anyway ;-)
ReplyDeleteglad to hear you liked it, that it was consistent with the ratings of others, even if you didn't like the ending. that's the freaking worst!!
ReplyDeleteYet another one I got too late! It's locked on my ipad though, so hopefully I will get a chance to read it. :) I did get May's book in the mail this week! Woohoo! So I'm excited to be able to participate no matter what. :) XO - Alexandra
ReplyDeleteSimply Alexandra: My Favorite Things
I hate when a good book has a not so good ending! Boo! I just got the Exposure to a Billionaire in the mail! Yippie! Now to find some spare time to read it.... :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent review! Bummer about the ending but it's always fun to me when I live or lived in the place where the book takes place. It hasn't actually happened to me very often at all so it's fun. And I guess I need to read the Time Traveler's Wife, huh? (Sadly, I cannot find my Kindle!! I have been reading a regular book loaned from a friend and in the meantime I misplaced my Kindle!! Wahhh!!!)
ReplyDeleteI like YA so I guess I'll be adding this to my growing reading list. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review. 4 Stars is impressive.
Oh wow - this sounds INTENSE!!!! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteJust added it to my list, becise I haven't read a YA book in far too long!
ReplyDeleteI'm still mad about the ending to this! My like of this book ranged from like 3-5 stars throughout and the ending was really made me frustrated. I just wish I knew exactly how it all worked!
ReplyDeleteA frustrating ending can really ruin it for a good book.
