Stuff & Things

I really wanted to participate in the last Stuff & Things link up with Kristin and Joey, so that's what today is.

Stuff, Things, etc.

I walked into work on Tuesday morning and there were 2 boxes of krispy kreme doughnuts that were brought in on Monday (and I wasn't there) for a new girl. I am not a huge doughnut person, I can easily avoid them and say no, but krispy kreme? Different story. It was so hard, but I just didn't even open the box, and I texted my friend immediately like HELP ME how do I say no to krispy kreme? I remember when they came to Sydney, there was like one location 30 minutes away from my house and I would drive there, buy a dozen doughnuts and then eat them all by the time I got home. And you wonder why I am trying to give up sweets cold turkey...

I am not supposed to be shopping right now, but shocker - I shopped. I bought some more of those t-shirts I mentioned in previous posts, but I haven't received them yet and I might take them back. I also bought 2 books, which isn't the end of the world, but definitely counts as shopping. If I send back the shirts, I'll be happy if I can stop at those 2 books. Half of the month down, just got to get through the rest of the month.

Also, I drove past my walgreens yesterday and saw 'bogo 50% cosmetics' so um.. I need to stop at walgreens on the way home today.

Sometimes when people make remarks on my reading, whether it's my lack of or how I read so much, I feel like I am back in primary school where I was made fun of reading as much as I did. I know that's silly and I know I am 29 and I can do what I want, but it's hard to shake those feelings sometimes.

I still haven't watched the latest Downton Abbey season. I'm not ready to say goodbye. I'm also a season behind on Greys, I haven't watched it since you-know-who died. I think I am behind on Once Upon A Time as well.. Basically I am behind on everything but HGTV.

My boss hasn't told us yet if we are off for Oaks. We were off last year, but I went to the Derby. This year I want to go to Oaks, but I can't if I'm at work!

Pink isn't exactly my colour, but I'll rock it along with my favourite drink, the lily. Throwback to Oaks 2013.

This is without a doubt my favourite time of year in Louisville! So many things going on.

Speaking of this time in Louisville, before Oaks is my next half marathon which I am 0% ready for (shocker) but I am already planning my after half marathon meal, the best part of running a race. I'm thinking pasta and breadsticks. What do you think?

  1. Yay I love this link up :) Good for you resisting the donuts!! We don't have Krisy Kreme anywhere nearby which is probably a good thing...haha. I also know what you're saying about the comments on your reading life.
That picture of you in the pink dress is SO pretty!! I totally disagree and think it is your colour - at least in that dress! I know what the Derby is, but what is Oaks? (educate this nice Canadian please :D)

  2. So someone brought Heavenly Donuts in to my office yesterday and a co-worker and I split a blueberry cake one. I couldn't help it. He is a bad influence. He said it didn't count if I didn't eat the whole thing. It made complete sense. Krispy Kreme with the chocolate frosting are my favorite. It is the only time I want chocolate anything, I usually hate chocolate frosting. Why is my whole comment so far about donuts? Clearly you know where my mind is. Also, I am ignoring your tricks to get me to go to Walgreens. Bad Kristen!!

  3. You look so cute in that dress!! Hopefully you get the day off to have another fun day like that! I hope I never made you feel like you're in grade school with my comments about how many books you've read. I'm just in awe and wish I read as much as you. If it did, I'm sorry--totally wasn't my intention :( Speaking of donuts, there are 7 boxes (maybe more) of donuts in the teachers lounge right now and I may have 1/4 of one left on my desk....soon to be less than that I think. Oops! :)

  4. The post half marathon meal is the best part of planning for a half marathon. Give me allllll the pasta and alllll the bread and basically all the carbs. YUM!

    1. thanks Kathleen! I wish I had your email so I could respond. Sorry I was vague, some people can be catty about it like I am bragging, which I am not! But not you :) So don't worry at all!

  7. I'm so behind on Once Upon a Time. I haven't watched a single episode this season! I finally caught up on Grey's this last weekend when I was dying on the couch HA!

  8. A Nordstrom Rack is opening down the street from my house (not sure if I mentioned that before) along with a Container Store and Off Fifth..so I'm still on my no buy now so I can go HAM when they open. And I'm buying all those shirts. They're so cute on you and Gina!

  9. The only reason to run a 1/2 is for the post 1/2 meal! Last one I ran was on superbowl, so after a stuffed crust pizza and tons of snacks, I'd say I negated my calorie burn!! Make today work, Rachel -CubicleCouture

  10. I hate that Downton ended :-( and I finally caught up on Greys two weeks ago!

  11. I don't know what you're talking about, you look great in pink! And good for you for not giving into the Krispy Kremes! That's my weakness too, I LOVE donuts! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

    ReplyDelete
  12. Pink looks so good on both of you guys! I hope you get off work so you can go to Oaks! I still have the last two seasons of Downton to watch-- it was literally my favorite show so I don't know why I haven't been able to bring myself to catch up.

  13. I had a similar situation when Krispy Kreme came to Birmingham, where I was at university. They had a student deal where if you bought 12 assorted, you got 12 glazed for free. Obviously I did that and obviously there would be nothing left by the end of a weekend. Sigh... I continue in my quest to try and make gluten free ones that taste even half as good!

I don't know what Oaks is but I hope you get the day off anyway. I am always pro days off!

  14. How cute are your fascinators?! I wore a big hat to a garden party last week but next year, it's fascinator all the way! Grey's is my weakeness - I came into it about 9 years too late, but watched from start all the way to where it is now. So good. Although the #McDreamy situation is an unfortunate one...

  15. I was doing really well on the no shopping front/no eating out until yesterday. I didn't eat out but I needed something from Target and I walked out with pencils from the $1 section, makeup (which I did need, as I was out of the things I bought) and this army green jacket thing that I have been eyeing for MONTHS...they finally had my size AND I had a gift card so I sad F-it and bought it. Then I remembered my pledge to not buy anything this month and I was like....damn it!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am pretty much ALWAYS behind on any and all TV shows haha- I watch them like years after everyone else is done ;) No big. I love that picture of you gals in your adorable fascinators! I'd love to get to the derby some day!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm behind on Grey's too...maybe I will catch up someday but I'm not sure if I can handle that kind of stress in my life. I love donuts, I rarely have one but every so often I just need one in my life!

    ReplyDelete
  18. haha - I love you are planning the meal for the race. My kinda gal.
I'm so far behind on Once Upon a Time too... I didnt want to watch the Downton Finale either.
Hope you get to make it to Oaks. Louisville's day at the downs :)

  19. Always jealous of you Kentucky girls this time of year when Derby Day rolls around, so much fun! The struggle is definitely real with Krispy Kreme! :-P

  20. It took me awhile to get back into Grey's after they killed you know who! And the finale season of Downton was good! I am sad that it's over, but it was happy. And don't worry about what everyone says about you reading! I go in spurts where all I want to do is read nonstop and then I will read nothing for ages.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I haven't finished Downton because I'm not ready either.

When people say WOW you read a lot I'm like uh...okay? Do I comment on how little you read? No. I do not.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Pasta and breadsticks sounds perfect. Then again, I'm the girl who eats everything right now so if it's carbs it all sounds good. Seriously, though, breadsticks. When I was still trying to do the vegan thing during pregnancy, my Grama had us stop at Krispy Kreme for a dozen donuts and that was the hardest 45 minute drive back of my life. The smell is intoxicating. I definitely ate half of one when we got home and could have eaten a bunch more.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh I so want to go to the Derby someday!! So much fun! I was teased for reading a lot too. I never wanted to get my drivers license because that meant i couldn't ride along and read in the car anymore. And when I was a teenager I'd go read at lunch at school instead of socialize. I just wanted to be quiet and read!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Those hats!! I love the style!
You definitely need to watch the last season of DA. It wraps up so nicely and it makes you feel at peace with the conclusion of the wonderful series.
I need to catch up on OUAT but I was SO disappointed with the Frozen story line so I've been stalling...

    ReplyDelete
  25. HAHAHA, I haven't even thought about what to eat after the half marathon -- probably because I'm just hoping I don't die first. Then we'll decide what to eat! I love your derby pictures -- you always look amazing! And I have no idea how you resisted temptation on a Krispy Kreme! Good girl! :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. YESSS to the pasta after your race. You just got me excited and starting to think about what I want for my post race meal:) (it's over a month away haha). Honestly I feel like I deserve a feast when I'm done with a race. Even a 5k, I'm like "I deserve everything" haha.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think I'm in the minority, but I do not like Krispy Kreme. I'd rather have DD any day.

People make comments to me about my reading, too, and while it's annoying, I've decided to ignore it all because they don't know what they're missing. I also cannot comprehend NOT wanting to read so those people make no sense to me.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I didn't realize you lived in Louisville. One of my good friends works as an anchor at WDRB, Valerie Chinn. She always loves the Derby too. It's been a long time since I've been there to see her but it was so beautiful. I used to hide being a reader when I was kid because most of my friends weren't (or they were hiding it too, which is both possible and sad. I am a very fast reader and can plow through a lot of books if I have the time and inclination and people comment about it too. So I get why it bothers you but we both need to let it go. I like seeing what you read - whether it's a little or a lot, which is completely subjective anyway - because we have similar tastes so I know that I'm always going to add a few good books to my TBR based on what you read.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Fun link up! Good luck with the cutting out sweets - I pretty much cannot say no when donuts are at work. LOVE your throwback picture - looks like so much fun!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Haha cutting out sweets?! That can't be possible! I know it wouldn't be for me!! Really love that dress you have on in the pic at the Oaks and I'm interested in what's in the Lily!??

    ReplyDelete
  31. Eat all the carbs. Krispy Kreme is actually my post race season splurge because who doesn't want to grab an original glazed when the HOT NOW sign is on ?!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Love that dress and hat, so pretty lady! I LOVE to read, I was always getting in trouble in school for reading during class, oops. I always thought I was a fast reader but you put me to shame. I think you are a rock star!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Way to go on passing up the donuts! I couldn't say no to breakfast this morning, and totally fell off the wagon. I still say that you shouldn't count books as things that you buy, but I understand why you do. Sometimes you just really need one that you've been dying to read.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I hope you get Oaks Day off! I don't go to either Oaks or Derby but I was surprised when I moved here to find out that the weekend was such a local holiday. Then again, I'm from Indianapolis where Memorial Day Weekend = Indianapolis 500. I haven't seen the last Downton Abbey season yet either -- and for that reason: don't want it to end. And after the race? I'm eating whatever the heck I can find (as long as it's edible).

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh my gosh I pass by wallgreens on my way from work every day and always stop in as well! When people bring in treats like donuts, I can't say no - 0 self control LOL! xo, Biana

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love how you went directly from "just got to get through the rest of the month" to needing to stop at Walgreens on the way home hahaha! What is Oaks? I don't know what you're talking about- that dress looks great on you, and your pink drink "accessory"!

    ReplyDelete
  37. So...what is Oaks?! Hahaha so clueless over here. I love your pink dress! Annnd that drink looks awesome. You were right about the Old Navy t-shirts...two thumbs waaaay down! I feel you on the reading thing. I got really good grades in school (and liked reading) and people make fun of you for those things. But now that I'm grown up I read as much as I can and I don't find being intelligent (minus my airhead moments) embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Good luck on the Mini! After you finish, eat whatever you want! Completing a half marathon is an accomplishment!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm also behind on everything that I'm supposed to be watching, but I'm watching reruns instead. OUAT and Downton, especially.
That is tough with the donuts. They're something I can easily leave, but I've partaken in those at staff meetings several times this year.
    Thanks for linking up!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh girl now I need those slub scoop tees, so cute and comfy! I am so behind on catching up on my shows because I keep adding more and more to my list, I need to get through one before adding more lol. Oh donuts are my weakness, I mean sweets in general. Basically if anyone brings me a sweet treat, it will be inhaled .156 seconds later.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I would love to go to the Derby or Oaks! I need to get my act together and go next year :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Good for you for resisting the donuts!! That's super impressive! That was one of the things that were really hard for me to give up when I first found out about my heart condition. They are just so good! So I get the temptation and am super proud of you for not giving in!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Girl finish downton! So satisfying. So good.

    I don't think I've ever been in a Walgreens.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh no! I hope my comment about being shocked that you'd only read a couple of books since the last link-up didn't make you feel that way. I get teased all the time about how much I read too (not really in a mean way, but in a "What a shock ... Kristen has her nose in a book again!" kind of way that I interpret as friendly joking). I also get teased about the sheer volume of library books I check out at any given time (I usually have between 7-10 out at once because I never know what I'll feel like reading next). But anyway ... Hopefully you didn't think I was making fun of you. I was just genuinely surprised because it seems like you usually get through a bunch every month.

    But anyway, moving on.

I used to hate donuts. I don't know why, but I just really didn't like them. I don't know what changed, but now I want donuts all the time. We have "Treat Day" every Friday where one person in our group brings something and then we move down the list each week, and last week someone brought in donuts. I was totally craving them, and I sucked down three of them like it was nothing. This is still much better than when I was right out of college and there was a Krispy Kreme pretty close to my apartment (dangerous!), and I'd stop there sometimes on the weekends to buy a dozen donuts ... And then proceed to eat the whole fucking box. I have no idea how I managed to avoid gaining a bunch of weight because I really wasn't working out much at that point. I think I was actually pretty skinny at that point. Maybe I just need to go on the donut diet again? Haha.

I don't think you're doing badly on the spending thing either. It's hard to cut back completely when you're used to buying at least a few new things every month, so I think you should just look at it as baby steps. You've still probably spent way less this month than you have the last few months, right?

    ReplyDelete
  45. i love that you are an avid reader! i am jealous because i don't have the time--unless you count reading kids' books 923495 times a day. usually the same ones on repeat! hehe. sounds like some fun times are ahead. i've never done a derby!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think you can cut yourself some slack on buying the tees and a couple books - nothing major. :) If you didn't read so much, I probably wouldn't feel so motivated to read so much because I'm always adding books to my list after you review them. So, don't stop because you're doing me a service lol. :) The last season of Downton was amazing, you'll love it. Once Upon a Time is getting kind of boring since they're stuck in the Underworld, but I'll never not love that show.

    ReplyDelete
  47. oh yea Krispy Kreme is hard to resist but you did soo good! People at my work are always bringing in cake and doughnuts and anything that can fatten you up. Ugh! You look gorgeous in that pink dress. I will have the look up what the Oakes is. lol No clue

    ReplyDelete
  48. Let people make comments about your reading... You could have waaaaay worse habits! Meanies. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I actually hadn't ever had a Krispy Kreme in my life until after the marathon last November. They're huge in the city but there are none by me; we have Dunkin Donuts though. And I don't know why but honestly, lately I've been SUPER into donuts too haha! I actually stopped at Dunkin while running errands the other day because I just couldn't fight it anymore.
15 more days! You can do it, stay strong and resist the urge to shop! (I say right after I just confessed to NOT resisting my own donut urge...)
Also, who TF is talking about your reading?! I swear, of all the things for people to talk smack about. Ridiculous. Tell people to back off and mind their own business. Book-shaming people now? Please.
When is the half? I've got mine coming up on 5/1 and if it weren't for Cherry Blossom forcing me to be, no way I would be ready for it either. Been a hard few running months.

    ReplyDelete
  50. i haven't had donuts since 2011! but i do love them...

    ReplyDelete
  51. donutes - never liked them...sour gummy candy? Never will I say no. People talk sh*t about reading too much? Who are these people and why are they 'reading' your blog then? haha HGTV/Cartoons are the only things I watch live. Other than that its all DVR. Hope you have a fabulous weekend by the way!! xo

    ReplyDelete
  52. omg I bet it's so fun in Louisville for Derby!!! I can only imagine. And that's funny about the reading, I def. do always comment your reading blogs mentioning how impressed I am that you read so much. And I mean it!!!!!! It's amazing. Food at work is always hard to pass up, mainly bc you can take it back to your desk and it just makes work better. Hard to argue that.

    ReplyDelete
  53. When I was pregnant I ate a donut (or two) every single day I think. One of our grocery stores up here, Safeway, makes the BEST donuts ever. And if you go and get a box after 7pm, the box is 50% off. So ya, I'm no stranger to wanting donuts, lol. So good for you for resisting! I'm a season behind in Grey's too (cause no cable over here), and I haven't watched Downton since you know who died. I was pissed off for months! I will go back and finish though....one of these days! Post race meals, and thinking about post race meals is definitely the best part!

  55. LOL not shopping is so difficult. I think that's pretty good and hey, yeah 1/2 the month is gone. We are in SF.. and I'm like... I've only bought like 2 things... #weird. I'm not a huge donut fan either... but we do have a local place... that is So good. They make these tiny fried mini cinnamon rolls... "mini cinnies" ... I don't even like cinnamon rolls that much... or donuts... but these are AMAZING. Now.. I really want some! I LOVE Wallgreens thank goodness they don't sell any of my eco stuff... or I would be spending ALL of my money. I am behind on all of the shows too.. except for izombie... because we finished season 1 on netflix and are were like OMFG what?!?!? and immediately started buying the individual episodes on Amazon... #costeffective UGH. I love seeing your Derby/Oaks photos. So fun! UM WHAT IS A LILY??? IT'S BEAUTIFUL! XO - Alexandra

I'm super impressed by your anti-sweets campaign. I've got a major sweet tooth.

  58. I really need to catch up on Downton. I think I left off on season 2 so still quite a bit to watch. And I feel like anytime there's a spending freeze in place all of the good sales happen. Gah! I hope you got some good thins though :)

  59. Ugh donuts are my biggest weakness lately! We just finally went to this amazing donut shop in town and are making up for lost time lol.
I think your reading is amazing and I don't know who would think otherwise? Honestly I'm embarrassed that I don't read more (I go through sporadic phases), but I know we've talked about this before, it just depends on what you make time for!

  63. Don't let anyone throw shade on your reading habits! Books are awesome, why wouldn't they want to read as much as possible? Dumb! I rarely have donuts but when they are readily available and right in front of me I can never resist and I always go for a second.

  66. Girl! It was so so so hard to watch the last season of Downton. I'm still sad it's over, but the season was a good one!

And girl - no one can blame you for buying more of those shirts!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Keep the shirts. And the books. I'd buy the shirts if I were taller. Plain shirts like that are great to have in your closet because you can wear them anytime! I bought several books through Thriftbooks last month and cannot wait to finish them all so I can get more. Actually, I should just order them now since it took like a month for them to get here. Lol. And I was always a bookworm too. I blame my poor eyesight on books because when my parents would call lights out, I'd sit by my bedroom door and read by the crack of light coming in from the hallway.

  68. Krispy Kreme is one of my weaknesses, especially the Sour Cream and the Blueberry donuts. Sooooo good. I keep saying that I'm going to go on a sugar fast, but it's so much easier said than done. My husband is totally an enabler too . . . not that it's his fault. I'm old enough to have some self-control, but I'm also just really good at making excuses.

I'm behind on Downton too. I started watching the final season, but I just can't bring myself to finish it. What if I hate how it ends? What if there isn't enough of a resolution and I'll spend so much time daydreaming about the possibilities? I don't have time for that! I am also caught up on HGTV too. I realized that the other day when every episode on was one I had already seen. The really need to sell houses and fix them up a little bit faster! haha

    ReplyDelete
  69. How you feel about Krispy Kremes is how I feel about Oreos. I can eat them ALL. ALLLLLLLLLL.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Haha! I don't get krispy kremes at all. They're gross! But if you put a bowl of queso in front of me, it's game on. Don't even think of touching one of my chips because I'll fight you, for real. And I wish I lived in a state with pony races! I went to Foxfield's in Virginia a few years ago and basically got so drunk I passed out in the grass of the Darden School of Business (top 10 b-school - read: tons of rich and powerful people there) tent and woke up with a face full of grass and a sunburn. Stay classy like me, k?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Uh, you look really great in pink! Happy and sunny and that drink looks delish! I hate comments about reading. One of my friend NEVER reads. Ever. Not even magazines or articles, and she constantly calls me a nerd. I have to really bite my tongue. And then there are other people who always say "How do you find the time?" Who cares! I make it work. Even if it means I'm up till midnight and exhausted every day. Haha!

    ReplyDelete
  72. How fun that you got to go to the Derby last year!!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm starting to think there is no age when you magically stop caring about stuff. Unless that age is 65 b/c most folks I see past that age have no f*cks left to give. I've been to Derby but never Oaks! I'm guessing it's another race? Love the fascinators!
