I Believe

I believe the sun should never set upon an argument
I believe we place our happiness in other people's hands
I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you

I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do

I believe that beauty magazines promote low self-esteem
I believe I'm loved when I'm completely by myself alone

I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality
I believe that trust is more important than monogamy
I believe your most attractive features are your heart and soul

I believe that family is worth more than money or gold

I believe the struggle for financial freedom is unfair
I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires
I believe forgiveness is the key to your unhappiness
I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed

I believe that god does not endorse TV evangelists
I believe in love surviving death into eternity
I believe in karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned

I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye

In case you didn't recognise it or have not heard it, these are the lyrics to a Savage Garden song called AffirmationI have loved this song since it came out, way back in 1999. This song is my jam, and if you haven't seen the video you should totally do that now because it's awesome (and so 90s).

There is only one line in this song that I straight up don't agree with, and another I am ambivalent about. All the others I feel like are my life motto or something.

How bout you, do you agree with most of the lines in this song, or do you disagree with the majority of them?

  2. Somehow I missed this song in '99 (which is crazy because I loved Savage Garden), but I heard it for the first time 5 years ago and have loved it ever since. There's a lot of truth to this song! I'd never seen the video before, though, so I appreciate the very 90's aspect of it, ha!

  3. I'm curious now...which lines are the ones you dont agree with?

Probably not a popular opinion, but for Dan and me we always let the sun set on arguments. We both know eachother well enough to know that after 10 we both get more irritable and arguments get worse and worse, so the best thing we can do is go to bed. I wish we could work out arguments before sleeping but we would be up for HOURS just yelling haha!

  4. Oh how I used to love Savage Garden. I read the first line of your post & I was like "that's a good thing to believe in" & then my eyes skipped to the 3rd line for some reason & I was like "wait a minute..." & I started singing it in my head. I like what you did with the lyrics & pictures.

  5. Ah Savage Garden...love it!
I totally agree with a lot of things in this too!
    Have a great weekend dear!

  6. I recognised the song at the second line! Love the song! Which line do you disagree with? I'm thinking it's the "forgiveness is the key to more unhappiness" one? :) Great great song! Love Savage Garden... so 90s! I'll be listening to them in the car on the way home now! x

  7. Oh my gosh - that video is TOTALLY 90's
I had never heard of this before & LOVE IT! What a great song!
& yes yes yes about the financial freedom lines!!!
I'm now curious too to the line you disagree with :)

  8. Interesting. Please update the post on which lines you disagree with. Now you have us all wondering.
There is some I agree with and some that I don't. That God doesn't endorse TV evangelists - I don't know if anyone can make such a general statement with authority.

  9. How cool! I honestly have never heard of this song, so I had no idea those were song lyrics. Such a cool idea, and you look fabulous in your wedding dress! :) Have a great weekend!

  11. Oh wow, you got me with this one! I had no idea it was a song until the end! Now I need to listen to it. And I also need you to tell me (secretly is just fine) which line you strongly disagree with! There are 1-2 I was like "huh? What does that mean?" But mostly...agree!

  12. loved this post and had no idea it was from that song, but you definitely made it your own with all of the pictures that went along with so many of the lines. Happy Friday!

  13. I didn't know this was a song at first, so as I was reading (just 1-2 particular lines) I was like, "Ummmmmmmmm...????" LOL
    Love you girl!!

  15. I think that I agree with most of these line :) I'm a fan of monogamy, though. Lol. (Though monogamy without trust is useless.) Also, you look stunning in your wedding photos!

  20. I'm a huge believer in Karma. You totally get what you put out there. This is such a great post! I had no idea those were song lyrics!!

  21. Love these, and I agree with so many. Why must junk food be bad for you? :(

  22. I had no idea those were song lyrics! I agree with many, but especially this: I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side. Happy Friday and weekend!

  23. I can't believe that I am unfamiliar with this song because I loved Savage Garden back in the day. I agree with almost every lyric and now I have to go listen to the song. And as always, I love the cat pics. Max is my family too. :)

  24. Oh wow I didn't even pick up on it being lyrics to a song but i was defintiely agreeing with you as I went down the list.

  25. So I've never heard this song...I thought maybe after I pressed play it would sound familiar, but NOPE.

But I'm all reading along being like this girl gets me. I was so impressed you wrote all this. Still love all the pictures. And your wedding bouquet was absolutely beautiful! And now I love this song. So upbeat and I pretty much agree with every line too.

But curious to know which one you disagree with!

  26. Oh wow, I totally forgot about this song! I have to admit, at first I just thought it was your words, and I was like, damn, this is a deep post and i'm tearing up over here. These ARE great lyrics...a few I don't agree with either, but overall, a great song! (I too want to know which lyrics you don't agree with!!!) :)

  27. I agree with most except the first - I don't believe in making something go away just because the sun is setting or I'm going to bed!

Love how you did this post.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I definitely agree with most of this. Some lines, not so much.

The way you did this post is awesome.

  29. Ok so Iwhen I read the title I was like "Ah! I have a draft like this!" And I have definitely heard this song before, but forgot about it, and totally didn't realize these were the lyrics until I got to the end! I believe in almost every line besides two. I've heard many times that it's "bad" or "wrong" to go to bed angry, but I don't believe in settling or compromising because the sun is setting as the first line suggests. And the one about trust above monogamy. I guess it makes sense logically, but somehow it doesn't sit well with me. Love all the throwback pics and the way you did this post- very unique! Happy weekend!

  30. The grass is definitely NOT greener on the other side, and family is everything, hands-down! Love many of these simple reminders that we all need :)

  31. Hahahaha OMG I haven't thought about this song in ages! Savage Garden was my JAM for like a month in 5th or 6th grade. As I was reading I thought some things sounded off (like just not how I would think you'd word them) and then I got to the end and died laughing because I finally caught on lol. I've never really thought about it, but I guess I do agree with most of the lines in the song - definitely some more than others. And now I'm going to have this song stuck in my head for the foreseeable future. Thanks! :P

  32. I feel like the junk food line is true but so not fair. Things that taste good should be good for you!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dani and I are in total agreement about which lines we don't agree with! When Michael and I argue at night, he always wants to make up before sleeping but for me, sleeping will clear my head and it will be better to talk it over in the morning. And I believe in monogamy. I'm all for people having open relationships and what not, but for me personally, no thanks.

I had never heard this before!!! And I loved Savage Garden!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I forgot all about this song and when I was reading this I was like oh me too, oh me too!!! Except for one or two. So now I am wondering which two lines are yours. Probably the same as mine. LOL. That video is so 90's. Perfection.

  35. Oh man Savage Garden was my jam when I was growing up! I totally agree that the sun should never set an argument. Sometimes it's just better to air it all out, and then you can get on with your lives!

    ReplyDelete
  36. #throwback love savage garden! I do let the sun go down on an argument because sometimes I'm too mad to talk about it sensibly. But yea, other than that, it's a great true song.

  37. I didn't realize it was a song haha- and I was like DANG, girl is digging into everything today! I weirdly feel like I'm about 50/50 on agreeing with the lines!

  38. I loveeeeeeeeeeeee that song! I got about four lines into your post and started singing it in my head and was like "oh wait, hold up! I see what you did there!" :P

I'm with you, some of the lines of the song I agree with 100%, others I disagree with and there's others I'm here or there about.

  41. I do love Savage Garden. I always have.
However, to my 7th grade ears, I didn't always understand the lyrics and now I'm wondering what Trust is more important than monogamy realllllly means? lol

    ReplyDelete
  42. I have never heard this song and legit thought you came up with it until I got to the end! haha The monogamy line seems like such a man thing to say, so that he can get a pass to do whatever he wants. I know, I know sexist generalization. Women can be pigs too.

  43. Savage Garden was my jam all through HS. I still have them in my epic playlist! Awesome post!

  46. I did NOT recognize that these were song lyrics. I thought it was a post from you! Well, it is a post from you, but a post you wrote. You know what I mean. I love the pics you chose for it. Wonderful!

  47. I definitely thought these were some awesome things from you, had no idea about the Savage Garden song! I like the lyrics, though. I'm still trying to figure out the trust more important than monogamy thing. That one made me go wait, what. But I would probably agree with all the rest.

  48. I totally thought you were saying these things at first until I read to the end. I am not familiar with this song but I definitely agree with most of it! :)

  50. I love, love, love this song! Have since it came out. I realised immediately what it was and sang along the whole way through. I agree with most of it. Not sure about the monogamy part (for ME! I have nothing against polygamy in principle, if everyone in the relationship is fine with it) and I'm not 100% sure on the wedded bliss part, mainly because I'm not married and I hate being judged for it :-P

  51. Lol oohhh savage garden. Good times. Good times.

  52. I totally knew that I recognized these words from somewhere! Love that song, love this post. I agree with most, too!

  53. Yeeeeeahh Savage Garden! I sang along the whole way through the post, only stopping to go "aww" at your cute pictures. There may have been some chair dancing going too, not going to lie. I loved this song then, I love the song now, and whilst I don't necessarily agree with some of the lines I do like how they provoke thought. I also like how my understanding of the meaning behind them and my agreement with them has changed over the years! But seriously, such love for Savage Garden. They are awesome.

  54. This is one of my favourite songs of all times!

  55. Hahah I had NO idea! I like it though. Anything "So 90's" I'll take! I definitely agree with most of it. I totally think people should choose if they want to be in open relationships, but I just personally couldn't do it. Other than that.. I'm feeling pretty good about these lyrics overall. :) XO - Alexandra

  57. I agree with most of these lines. One that stood out was "I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do." I remember how weird it felt to turn 22 (the age my mom was when she got married) and not magically become an all-knowing, super wise adult with all the answers. I still felt like me. I still do. It's kind of weird to realize that we're all just normal, mistake-making people -- even parents -- but it's true!

  58. I had no idea this was song lyrics but I loved it! I agree with most of them too—some a little less so, and some vehemently.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I thought some of these lines sounded familiar, haha. I agree with a lot of them too.. but yep.. there are a couple that I'm like ehhhh about.

  60. Weirdly enough, I loved Savage Garden and somehow never heard this song. Which is a shame because it's awesome and I agree with every single one of the lines that you posted.

  61. OMG I loved Savage Garden as a teenager and still do...Affirmation is such a great song. I love the way you pasted it into your life :)

  62. I agreed with most of the lines in the song! I don't think I'm heard this song before - I legit thought you were making up each line and I was just nodding along with them!

  64. I love this post, but I'll confess that I had no idea it was taken from song lyrics until the very end. You know how much I love music, though, and I love that it inspired you to think about how the words could apply to your own life and beliefs. I've never heard the song, so I'll give it a listen! :-)
