Packing for Europe - 2 Weeks in the Summer - Carry On Only

If you would like to see all my travel posts, including recaps, tips & recommendations and packing guides, please visit my travel page.

Nope, not going to Europe. But when I did, I posted my 'practice' packing post with 25 items and 50+ outfits, but I never followed up with what I actually packed. I knew I didn't need (or want) 50 outfits, so I scaled it down quite a bit, and I wanted to share in case anyone needs any help packing. Plus I just really like packing posts, okay?

So here is what I packed for 2 weeks in Paris, Rome & Dublin.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click, I make like 2 cents, so thank you! Not included but packed: makeup, hair tools, pajamas, tights, underwear, etc. Most of my actual items were old or sold out, so I tried to find something similar. I also brought 2 necklaces but didn't include those in the list.

A note about the shoes - I think I brought the perfect shoes. I'm not a heels-while-travelling-girl, and those flats are dressy enough for me. I know sneakers aren't cute but we walked SO much, they were so worth it. I also wore my crocs with dresses and they are very comfortable. Not winning any fashion awards over here, but comfort is more important to me.

I also bought a couple of things while I was over there - I always do! shopaholic over here - and I included those in the packing list just to show exactly what I wore (noted with an asterisk). I absolutely would have been fine with only what I brought though, I just really like to shop. I obviously didn't need 4 scarves in the summer, but they are an easy way to mix up an outfit (especially in Dublin where it was 'cold' to me). We also did laundry once as there was a laundromat right down the street from our hotel.

I didn't get the best 'outfit photos' but I thought it would be more fun to show the actual photos / outfits than to recreate them. I especially didn't get good photos of my maxi dress, but I did wear it twice. I also only have one photo with my grey cardigan, but that thing came almost everywhere with me - it fits in my crossbody bag and you never know when it will get cold (I did the same thing with the same cardigan in Disney).

There was also an outfit that was completely not photographed, but I included it in my 'just-add-body' outfits (got that fabulous term from Gina). I don't exactly have regrets like I did with NYC, but I probably didn't need to bring both my rain coat and my denim jacket. It's not like I ran out of room though, so it wasn't the end of the world.

Anyway, what I love most about packing posts is seeing what other people can fit in their bags. I see lots of posts about 10 items = 20 outfits, which I of course love, but I have more items than outfits. I might have only worn something once, but I don't mind because it shows that you can overpack (hooray!) while still using a carry on only. High fives all round y'all.

Honestly, I don't think I could do the whole carry on thing without the ebags mother lode weekender bags. These bags are so amazing, I love them! They are so worth the (very reasonable) cost and this is not sponsored I promise, I just love them. I didn't have to extend the bag once (which means I should have shopped more), it gets heavy when wearing for several hours but so does a small crossbody bag. KC was able to carry them both so they mustn't be that bad.

Meanwhile, can you guess which one is mine? Ha!

Most importantly, they fit perfectly in all the overhead bins (we flew American Airlines, Aer Lingus and EasyJet FYI). Which is a win in my book.

So, anyone need carry on only packing help? I'm at your service! Okay, I mean I'm happy to help.

  1. GIIIIIIIRL, I'm totally hiring you for our month venture. I've started planning things out since I read your previous posts, but probably could still use your help. The 12 day greecian cruise is making packing a lil tricky, haha. I love all your color choices, btw. Thanks for sharing such an informative -- and in my case timely-- post. You rock!

  2. So impressive! I took one weekender backpack for our 2 weeks in Thailand and definitely overpacked. I was still pretty pleased with the minimal packing though!

  3. I think I need you to come pack for me for any trip I go on!! I totally over packed for India and Dubai, but we needed a full half of our large suitcase for food, so there was no way to get around that!! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  4. This is awesome. You and Amanda at Meet at the Barre are my packing gurus haha

  5. I always love seeing packing posts :) Thanks for sharing!

  6. How do you pack your liquids (shampoo, conditioner, etc)? I would like to do carry-on only for my honeymoon, but I need way more than 1.5 oz of shampoo for a week.

  7. You should see the back of my car when I go somewhere for the weekend... it's 2.5 days and I probably pack more than you packed for 2 weeks in Europe! Your minimalist packing skills never fail to impress me.

  8. this is wildly impressive. i am terrible at packing and i'm so far from a planner that this actually stresses me out to try to plan. HA. but i know i should. it looks like you packed way more than you did when you look at photos!

  10. You are seriously the packing queen. I am always amazed at your skills when packing. I'm going to New Jersey and NYC this summer and I am a horrible over packer. I take things "just in case" but I do believe I am going to take a lessen from you and NOT do that this time around!

  11. I love these posts and I'm never going to Europe in my life. They're just so fun though! What do Europeans wear as shoes to walk around a lot? I've heard that sneakers are just so American, but... what else is there for tons of walking?!

  12. LOVE this! I did New Zealand in just my carry on as did the BF. I'm doing 2 weeks in Europe (Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro & Venice) in April & this is going to come in super handy. Europe is just a little more dressy than my norm, or so I've heard. So I plan to take some dressier things to class it up a bit. And as usual. Carry-on only for me. I know my checked bag is free. But ain't nobody trying to have their shit lost. Hmph.

  13. Ok question. Do you take individual pictures of all your clothes to make those packing collage things? I've always wondered that with packing posts (which I love. I was obsessed with them last year when I was packing for my two weeks in Europe.) I love how detailed yours are. I never did a "what I packed" post after my trip. Maybe I should. I don't know. i still have all the pictures of the outfits I packed because I guess in the back of my mind I knew I would eventually do a post like that. But I took the advice you've given in all of yours, which is to re-wear everything. It worked perfectly, especially with the Febreeze and Downy Wrinkle Release I brought along too. Ok now I'm rambling. Great post, great ideas, and I hope you had a great weekend! :)

  14. I can't wait for my next adventure to test your travel tips! :)

  15. Oh man I love these posts! They are so helpful. I have yet to travel with just a carry on. Honesty, it really scares me. And ok, I will be totally honest, how am I gonna carry home all the stuff I bought? haha That is the real problem. I love the Elnett Hairspray in Europe and last time I brought home 7 cans of it. Yes, 7 cans. I had them all on the bottom of my suitcase. haha

  16. I have never ever ever tried to pack everything into a carry-on. We're headed to Disney next summer so maybe I will try to do the carry-on thing with that! I'm going to check out that backpack right now! (I went to India for 4 weeks and packed 56# of stuff... I needed a post like this back then!)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm really impressed with how you were able to fit so much stuff in a carryon! I've travelled with a carry on before but I have yet to take one on a vacation. Also I like to bring a bunch of stuff back home (yes I've smuggled wine from Italy before haha) so I like having room for it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes you know how much I love this post! We are in the market for new carry on bags so I definitely need to check those out!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Love this! Yes to stripes, black and a denim jacket! I need a new one!

  20. Bow down to the master packer!! This is unbelievable-- I certainly need to channel you for my next trip! I always OVER pack. Like over over over pack!!!! Make today work, Rachel -CubicleCouture

  21. I am still in awe of how awesome of a job you did packing for your trip last year in a carryon no less! You looked awesome throughout your trip! And lol at KC in the last pic - too funny :)

  22. I love this and your style picks are exactly what I would wear. I need to refer to this next time we go on a trip. I hate checking luggage but I think I'm getting worse at packing the more we travel. Doesn't make sense but it's true! Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm pinning this for later! I sadly don't have plans for a two week vacation any time soon, but this will come in so handy for when I'm ready! I want that backpack too!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think you should just fly here anytime I'm getting ready for a trip and pack for me. :) No, but seriously - you have skills. I'm not sure I ever could pack for that length of time in only a carry on - I blame my toiletries/makeup, though. I also love that most of your tops were striped because well, you never can go wrong with that, right? And, yay for ebags! You know how much I love them now since our Disney trip.

    ReplyDelete
  25. This is so impressive! And cute outfits :) I'm a sucker for anything striped haha. I'm guilty for wayyyy over packing but once I think in advance it's a little easier to not bring 3/4 of my closet haha.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Love this post! A carry on for 10-14 days in Europe is completely do able! I've made it work too. I only took 2 pairs of jeans and kept rewearing them and got away with only 2 pairs of shoes!

  27. You are amazeballs at packing. I need to re-read this when we decide on our next trip. As is, when I go to Long Island for one weekend with my one daughter we take two huge suitcases! Hahahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have been really loving stripes lately so I love all the picks you have put together. It is great to be able to get so many mixed and matched outfits without overloading the luggage. I can't wait to see how your trip goes.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I CANNOT pack like you, and that is going to have to change. I'm keeping this saved for the future. You have packing down to a science (and manage to look cute with what you pack, also!).

    ReplyDelete
  30. Love your outfits - I can only imagine the time it took to put that cool graphic together! My favorite though is the pic of KC at the end - good guy doubling down on the baggage! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh Lordy - I spent 3 months in Germany during college, packed more than twice the amount I needed, ended up leaving a lot of stuff since I had bought stuff while there, and had to lug around (and check in!) the heaviest suitcase known to mankind. 20 years later and I've learned my lesson - especially if we travel someplace that's going to have laundry facilities. I will definitely be bookmarking this -- I love the outfit suggestions!

    ReplyDelete
  32. That picture of KC is hilarious! I can't believe you fit all of that plus hair tools etc. into a carry on. I don't know if I could do it. I'm such a serial overpacker that it's probably impossible for a 2 week trip so maybe a shorter trip would work.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Can you just come to Texas and help me pack for Europe, pretty please? You're seriously my packing idol, and I'm hoping that I'll be as much of a packing queen as you were! Plus, I've heard that the last thing I want to do when I'm there is lug a huge suitcase around!

    ReplyDelete
  34. This is so great, I'm a perpetual over-packer. I totally will be referring back to this when it comes time to going to Europe. I'm all about comfort when walking around that much, those sneakers are cute though too :)!

  35. This post is coming at a perfect time! We packed in carry ons for 2 weeks in Italy back in 2013, but it was HOT so all our clothes were small (tank tops, shorts, thin teeshirts, etc). This time we're talking about a couple of days in Switzerland and I know it will be chilly so we're having to think through how we want to pack a little more carefully. Also, we're thinking about going in June instead of August. Tell me about the weather in Rome when you went last year (you were there in the early summer, right?). I'm trying to figure out if we need to pack light layers for the whole trip or if the only time we'll be cold is in Switzerland.

Also, we need new carry-on-size backpacks to travel with so I LOVE that you included your recommendation. So tell me, why do you love these so much?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love your packing lists. Love, Love, Love. I am a crazypants over-packer. Seriously... BUT now that you've been posting all of this, and I've been trying to use only carryons and smaller bags.. I've been trying to be more reasonable about what I am packing. So hooray for progress! :) I can't wait to have a "big" trip so I can try harder. :) XO - Alexandra

  37. You are so great at packing light! I always want choices, so I struggle with it so much!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Basically I just want your entire wardrobe! And you're sooo right about comfort beating out looking cute- though I really do think all of your outfits always look cute! I'm going to try and put some of these tips to the test for a mini trip we have coming up because my packing is always a fiasco!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love this! Once you realize how many outfits you can mix and match with what you pack, carryons never seem as small. Of course I ended up forgetting to pack the shirt that I wanted to wear the most and matched every bottom. Bah! Shopping time I think. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Me! Yes! I do! *waves* I am a horrible combination of an overpacker with terrible style. So I bring a bunch of clothes that don't go together, take up far too much space, and don't really suit whatever I've travelled to either. I try, but I'm fighting a losing battle. I like seeing your outfit combos, helpful for someone like me :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Such cute outfits! Traveling in the summer definitely looks like it'd be a lot easier than winter. The sweaters are a struggle to fit a lot of in carry-ons, but no way would I want to lug a giant suitcase around Europe!

    ReplyDelete
  42. this is everything we need and some great outfits too!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Woo, glad I could inspire you to include "Just Add Body" content! LOL! And you are an expert at packing. Really, you should start a side business! I also love that you showed the real-life pics of your outfits! It's really fun to see those anyway. And now you have me thinking I should get pink sneakers for my next trip! I love the way they look with your outfit sets!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Honestly, you need to be like a travel packing consultant or something. I don't think I'll ever get on a plane again (not that I have plans to in the near future yet because #broke) without consulting you first.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I feel like you and I are style BFF's because I either own or would wear everything you packed! I def have those Nikes and I love that you packed them for Europe! And go KC go with the double luggage carry. What a guy! :)

When are you opening up your own travel agency? Seriously. Add this as an add-on service!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I've said it before but I'll say it again - you are the packing queen. I try so hard to stretch my wardrobe that way but it just doesn't come as easily.

And I'm with Paige. When you open up a travel agency, I'll be calling you to book a trip!

  48. I have never owned a pair of Croc's before, but I think I might like those. And they're only $12, so that's awesome. How did they last walking through Europe? Although tennis shoes would probably be my best bet.

  49. DUDE. You crushed it. I'm definitely going to need this! I'm going to Punta Cana for a week and a 2 week California coast trip this year.

  50. It always amazes me how many outfits you get out of the number of items you pack. You should look into being a packing coach. I think you could make some money, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Okay you are BEYOND amazing!!!! How do you do it?!?! I need you to pack my next bag for July. Thanks! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I can barely get a weekend in a carry on bag. I'm amazed!

  53. Ahhhhhhh I love all of your outfits!!!! I see some are H&M and we just found out we are FINALLY getting one here in Birmingham!!! I really missed having on near me so that makes me excited. It amazes me that all that stuff fit in that one little bag! Crazy talk!!! I love that it wears like a book bag!!!! I might have to look in to getting one of those!!!

  55. Please come to Philadelphia and pack my things for my Europe trip this fall.

Totally with you on the shoes - I will never win for most fashionable shoes when traveling, but hot damn I will be comfortable.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Love all your outfits and the sneakers are super cute. It's not like they're boring running shoes :). You fit it all on carryon, so that's impressive! We went to Florida for a week and it was challenging to get all of our stuff under the 50lb limit for domestic travel. Did you have to do laundry while there?

  57. I'm not a packing person BUT I'm a clothes person so I still love looking at posts like this because it feeds my shopping addiction... now I think I need that black maxi dress! lolol

  59. I love seeing how many different outfits can be made. It's so important to remember to get more creative instead of thinking we need to buy more. :)
