Las Vegas Honeymoon Recap (2013)

If you would like to see all my travel posts, including recaps, tips & recommendations and packing guides, please visit my travel page.

I originally posted this back in the day, but it was before I was really blogging so I thought I'd share it again today for the link up with the girls. Plus, it's getting me excited for my two Vegas trips coming up later this year.

I had been to Vegas before (once with Trek America, once with my mum), KC had not. It was also our first vacation just the two of us. We have been on vacation together before to Disneyland, London, DC & Gatlinburg but never just the two of us, and we'd also never flown together. We both kept saying 'I can't believe we are at an airport and not saying goodbye!'

We stayed at The Signature at MGM Grand. It was amazing. The front desk lady was so friendly, she upgraded us to a penthouse with a view of the strip when she found out we were on our honeymoon. I was not expecting that from Vegas - I bet they get a lot of newlyweds there.

After settling in, we walked up and down the strip and grabbed a drink from Paris Las Vegas.

The next day, we got up bright and early and walked from our hotel to Circus Circus where Adventuredome is. I had read about it and was super excited to let my inner child run free at the indoor amusement park. The walk was a bit over 2 miles and we made a couple stops to get inside air conditioning, and to take photos. We weren't worried about the walk, though we probably should have been. 2 miles is nothing to walk for either of us, but in the middle of Vegas summer with little to no cover for most of the walk - it was hot, and we both got more than a little sun burned from it.

If you are considering going to the Adventuredome (whether you walk or take a taxi!) my advice would be to skip it. It was $30 each, there were only a handful of rides appropriate for adults (who like to act like children) and they just weren't that good. I love Disneyland and Disney World, so I really do enjoy acting like a child, but this was just not a fun time. I was very disappointed. We were probably there for 2 hours, max. We rode the roller coaster 3 or 4 times to get our moneys worth, as each ride is $8 each if you don't get the day pass.

That night, we went to see Penn & Teller at the Rio. We bought our tickets from Vegas.com and saved about $50 each. Well worth checking out that website for shows and things if you are heading to Vegas. The show was hilarious, and I will admit, I was super excited to see them both after being a die hard Sabrina the Teenage Witch fan back in the day!  I definitely recommend adding Penn & Teller to your entertainment if you're visiting Vegas. They both hang out in the lobby after the show, and you get to meet them! Its not an organised line, you just kind of swarm them and wait for your turn to take a photo. But they are both super professional and obviously do this almost every night, so I don't think we were waiting very long at all.

The next day we wandered around again, no real purpose. Then we went to see Absinthe at Caesars Palace. This was, by far, our favorite show. If you see one show in Vegas, make it this one! I totally stole that from somewhere, but there is no better way to say it! It was entertaining, hilarious and just all around a fabulous show. I was worried KC wouldn't like any of the shows, but he was almost falling off his seat laughing and enjoying it as much as I was. Although - please be aware this is 100% not meant for children, or those who are easily offended.

The next day we caught up on laying by the pool before the Matchbox 20 & Goo Goo Dolls concert at Mandalay Bay. I was soooooooo excited for this show, you have no idea. I loved both of these bands (still do) when I was a teenager, and was never able to see them in Australia. So when I found out they were going to be in Vegas the same time as us, how could I pass it up? And they did not disappoint. They were both fabulous! It was so much fun to sing along to songs that took me back to those years. I even teared up a bit when the Goo Goo Dolls played Here Is Gone - seriously my favorite song of theirs, it took me back so hard and fast. It made me so happy and sad at the same time.

We definitely slacked from taking photos for the next couple of days. We went shopping, relaxed and indulged our lazy sides (it rained the night of the concert and the next day), went to see Jersey Boys (aahhhhmmmazzziiinggg! we were easily the youngest people in the audience, and the loudest sing along-ers!) and Zumanity (very good, hilarious, much like Absinthe in adult humor, but a bit more 'sensual' than Absinthe).

So that's it, our honeymoon! We had such a good time. I think Vegas is such a fun destination. Neither of us are gamblers or big drinkers, we were probably in bed by midnight each night and played the slot machines a couple of times whilst waiting on a show. There is so much more to do there than get drunk and gamble - unless that's what you want to do, if so - go for it! Also, I saw so many people with kids and babies - Vegas can be such a family friendly place and we are definitely going to take our future kidlets there. I just don't think that some of the shows are kid appropriate, but there is so much more to do - they might even enjoy Adventuredome more than we did.

Linking up with the girls for Wanderlust Wednesdays.

Wanderlust Wednesdays

I'm glad to have the link up as an excuse to share our honeymoon again, we really did have a great time and it's when I got bit by the travel bug again. I'd always wanted to travel, but it was kind of at a standstill in 2012 and 2013 because of the whole am I staying or going, okay I'm staying, wow weddings and permanent residency applications are expensive.. you know how it goes.

I started planning our Australia and Europe trips the week we got back from our honeymoon, and it's fun to look back and know that we were able to make those happen, if that makes sense. We are in such a different place in all possible ways.

Have you ever been - or do you want to go - to Vegas?

  1. Your trip to Vegas sounds perfect! So many people just spend time in the casinos but there are so many other things to do in Vegas! I'll definitely have to check out Absinthe the next time I'm out there. <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

  2. Y'all sure did Vegas right. I've heard only good things about the shows you mentioned, I really want to see P&T. We rarely do shows when we go to Vegas and I'd really like to hit one or two on our next trip. We do a ton of walking as well, taxis are NOT cheap but you are right, it is NOT cool there on the strip. Looks like such a wonderful honeymoon, thanks for sharing!

  3. This sounds like such a fun time. There really is so much to see and do in Vegas other than partying!

  4. So fun! It's funny now that I'm engaged everyone asks about wedding plans and assumes we want to go overseas somewhere for our honeymoon but we've been kicking around stayin in the states so I loved reading about how much fun y'all had!

  5. Ohh I love this! I HATE gambling but I love Vegas. You guys did so much!! We only do like one thing every time we go lol. We're dumb. And I would die to see matchbox 20 and goo goo dolls! Also, I really really love that pink dress you're wearing up there. You basically look like a model ;) This is such a good idea to bring back older posts because people like me, who are new around here would have never seen it!

  6. I've never really thought about all the non-gambling things there are to do in Vegas so this was awesome! I mean, I'd like to go just to say I did, but I'm not sure what I'd do while I was there, you know? So nice of the front desk lately to upgrade you. I wouldn't have expected that either! The concert would have been my favorite part I think. I saw Goo Goo Dolls like my freshman year of high school and I still like them!

  7. VEGAS!!!! Chris and I went to Vegas for the first time after we had been married for a few years and we loved it! We loved all of the shows that you could see, the amazing hotels, the all star chefs and their restaurants, and of course, the people watching! It sounds like y'all had so much fun and got to see and do so many things! I'm so jealous that y'all got to see Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox 20! My high school self probably would have died to see them live! And absinthe was such an amazing show! I saw it last time I visited and I want to take Chris next time we're together!

  8. I love Vegas! Cody and I met and got engaged there. We're hoping to go again this fall. Maybe we should tell them our story and hope for an upgrade, too?!

  10. how CUTE are you two? :) but it's so true - there's so much more than drinking and gambling. i am not a gambler and i've been to that town a lot (mostly for work with a side of fun) and it's one of the BEST cities for food. the restaurants there do not disappoint. and my biggest guilty pleasure? drinking and shopping. deadly. ha

  11. Love all of this. I have never been to Vega (gasp, I know) and it's it so hot and ready on my bucket list I can't even stand it. My husband has been a million times for work and goes every year in March for a guys March Madness basketball long weekend - so totally jealous.

I'm not a gambler at all - I may have to pull a slot or sit at a blackjack table just to say I did it, but I really want to see the neon lights, the amazing hotels, the fountains, the shows and concerts, ohhhh and just the crazy atmosphere that I imagine it to be.

I'm saving this post so I can follow your recommendations when I make it happen! What a lovely honeymoon and I must say, you look amazing . . . as always!!!

  12. I've never been tempted by Vegas before as I'm not really a big drinker or gambler. And I have my old lady bedtimes. However, you've convinced me there's a lot more to the city than that, and if I ever get the chance I reckon I'd give it a go. Also when you're done with that purple maxi pass it right along, please?

  13. What a fun trip! Could you to be any cuter?? I saw Jersey Boys in Vegas as well and I thought it was fantastic!! That is so cool that you got to meet Penn and Teller.

  14. SO fun, taking little notes pre-August. :) Looking forward to the trip and fun... not so much the heat and sun though. #palesopale I really wish we were going not at the literal hottest point in the year. That's really sweet that you were both happy in the airport for once! :) XO - Alexandra

  15. Was in Vegas 15 years ago... I can only imagine that changes that have taken place since then. I (fingers crossed) may be heading out there this summer with some buddies to celebrate one buddy's 40th birthday.

  16. First of all I'm super jealous of your not one but two Vegas trips coming up (and your cruise too of course)! Such a fun trip, and the Signature at MGM is one of my favs! You guys sure packed a lot in, and now I totally want to see Absinthe <3

  17. This looks like so much fun! And you guys did a ton of stuff. I would love to see the Goo Goo Dolls in concert! I was in Vegas for literally like 12 hours this fall haha. My friend and I road tripped from Iowa to Nevada since she was moving there and then I flew out of Vegas to go home. We didn't plan anything and ended up walking around Fremont Street because we had no clue what to do haha. It was definitely interesting! I'd like to go back sometime and actually go to some shows and stuff!

  18. I loved reading everything that you did in Vegas! As you remember, you stumbled upon my post a while back from mine and Ryan's trip for our first wedding anniversary - Vegas is definitely a fun place, but I was ready to leave after a few days. I'm so jealous that you stayed at MGM - their pool is supposed to be ridiculous! And, you saw Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox 20? That would've made my life complete right there. :) You guys are so cute in all your pictures!

  19. We were thinking about going to Vegas this spring but plans changed. My husband and I aren't huge drinkers and we don't gamble, but I really want to experience it at least once!! I love your recap! Thanks for re-sharing!!

  20. I love the Goo Goo Dolls!

Glad you had such a good time doing and seeing and relaxing on your honeymoon. Very cool that you got to meet Penn & Teller too!

Vegas is not a place I have a desire to revisit. I know many people who go often. It's just not a me town.

  21. Your honeymoon in Vegas looks like so much fun! I would love to see the shows there, because I'm not a very good gambler (penny slots only). I will for sure have to visit Vegas one day :)

  22. So did you hear the quiet one (Teller?) talk?
I love Vegas & all there is to see - when we went last, we got to go to the billboard awards - David Bowie, Garth Brooths, NSYNC & Destiny's child was there - but those two groups tell you how long ago that was :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Vegas is what you make it. i would have done the same - eat, drink, relax and see the sights. fuck clubbing; aint nobody got time for that!

    ReplyDelete
  24. What a fun time, friend!! I've only been to Vegas twice, both times where I didn't get to do much and that was a total bummer. It's on my list to go again so I can actually check out the shows and what other things Vegas really has to offer!

    ReplyDelete
  25. You guys are so cute and look so happy in all of the pictures. I think I've mentioned this to you before but your recaps of Vegas always make it sound so much better than what seems to be the norm of staying out all night and being totally wild, haha. So fun you got to see so many shows-- is it all pretty walkable?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love Vegas, and I think it is totally true what you said that you could still enjoy it without being a gambler. I loved Zummanity, so hilarous!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've never been to Vegas! Michael has been once and he went with his dad on a work trip...for a Catholic organization. Ha! He loved the buffets and he liked playing the slot machines. I want to go and just hang out by the pool and eat and see some shows! I'm not big into getting super drunk or gambling either.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Fun! You look so young in those pictures. I've never been to Vegas, but I'm kind of interested to see it at least once!

  29. Vegas has a lot more to offer than the typical trashy vibe (which is kinda fun on vacation). I mean the food is world class and the hotels themselves are a blast and a half. Looks like you guys had a great, great time!! I can't wait to go back to Vegas in a few months with all my girls. But really, it sounds like you guys had a sweet time and I know what you mean about the first time flying together. It always feels so fun!I think you guys made a good decision on location.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Love this! You guys look like babies in these pics - time flies! Pretty sure this is how we would do Vegas, too as we're not huge gamblers or anything. I've still never been, but glad to hear that it can still be fun without that stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I loved Vegas but I also hated it. I went once with my husband/ex-husband and he spent so much time gambling and lost tons of money. I felt like I was on vacation alone. It was obnoxious so I decided never to return with him again. Now that I am on my own maybe I will venture back.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Congrats on the wedding! I have not been on in a while and missed the wedding but your honeymoon looks great. I have never spent the non-drinking time on the strip to see all the things you guys did and it looks like a lot of fun.

    ReplyDelete
  33. What a fun honeymoon trip! I absolutely love Vegas and stay at the MGM, Paris and Planet Hollywood. So lucky you get to go twice this year!!

  34. Oh, how fun! Great photos and just reading about all you did makes me exhausted! :) I've been to Vegas only once AND it was for the National Footy matches (don'tcha know!?) -- it was in October and I think 2008 or so -- the weather was still freaky hot for me and I was seeking out any bit of shade I could find while my hubby played in the matches. Neither of us are big fans of gambling or glitz so we only spent one day walking from one end of the Strip to the other (chafe much? oh yes, we did). We drove to Hoover Dam one day and then spent an afternoon at Red Rock Canyon. All very neat and I think it'd be cool to go back again. We thought about taking the kids so they can SEE Las Vegas but then use that as our 'base' for driving to the Grand Canyon or something. Again - fun photos! Thanks for sharing!

  35. I've actually been wanting to do a what to do in Vegas if you don't gamble or drink post (one of these days!) Haha. Your honeymoon looked like so much fun! Chris and I stayed at The Signature for our 21st birthday/first wedding anniversary and LOVED it. It's our favorite place when we are paying for a hotel in Vegas (I love the Bellagio fountain view rooms when my in-laws are paying! Hehe). I have wanted to see Absinthe, but the last few times we were in Vegas, it was with my in-laws, and I felt like I would be SUPER uncomfortable!

    ReplyDelete
  36. It's sort of funny, I've been to Vegas at least four times and all before I was 21!!! Tons of stuff to do for those not able or who don't like to drink and gamble.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have never been to vegas but you make me want to go! One of Chris's really good friends was a huge DJ in Atlanta and moved out to Vegas and has residency at places there now. One day we need to go see him and visit all the things you mentioned. I loved Sabrina the Teenage Witch!!! And fun fact....Matchbox 20 was my very first concert ever! My dad won me tickets when I was a freshmen in high school I think? We went to see them just him and I when we were visiting my Grandma in Pittsburgh one summer and he bought me a tshirt and I still wear it today! It was the best concert ever!

We LOVE Penn and Teller... do you ever watch their show Bullshit? It's pretty awesome. Pete got me into it when we first started dating.

  46. i saw jersey boys in vegas too and absolutely LOVED it. I was there visiting with my parents so we also went to the donny and marie Osmund show. I was by far the youngest person in the crowd, and my parents were probably the second youngest..no lie. haha.

  47. Your honeymoon looks like it was so much fun! I have never been to vegas but I do want to go one day. I am not a drinker or big gambler either so I love when I hear people (who are also not big drinkers/gamblers) say they had a great time in this city!

  48. Looks like so much fun!! you guys are just way too cute!! I'll have to pass thing along to my sister, since she's planning a trip there this year! AND also, all your carry-on packing tips!! (because those are the shizzzzzzz)

  49. This makes me want to try Vegas again. I went once when I was 12, and it was so boring. It was just a quick stop (my mom and I only stayed a couple of nights before heading off to California) and mostly just a "we traveled here so we could say we've experienced it" kind of thing. I was so young, though, that it really wasn't much fun for me. We didn't have a bunch of shows lined up or anything because we weren't planning to be there very long, and I really don't remember much about it except that it was really hot. (And I hate being hot!)

That being said, it might be fun to go to a bigger concert there or to see some of the shows. Your honeymoon sounds a lot like the way I'd want to do Vegas if I were to go back.

P.S. I love all of these pictures! :-) You guys are so cute!

  50. I really want to visit vegas! Love that you went there for your honeymoon and did not so typical vegas things as well.

  52. Looks like a lot of fun. I'd love to go there someday, especially to see a Penn & Teller show. My oldest step-daughter, who is 21, is going to Vegas next month with some friends.

  53. I looooove Vegas. You saw my favorite show (that I've seen there so far), Zumanity! If Absinthe's still there next time I visit, I'll have to check it out. I saw the Beatles LOVE show, too, and that was pretty good. My favorite thing to do there is go to the Sugar Factory for a sweet breakfast and one of those ridic goblets (giant bowl of candy-themed cocktail basically). It's great when it's after 12am and you're starving and if you love candy like me. It was at the Paris hotel originally, but now they're redoing the Vegas Sugar Factory into some crazy mega restaurant. It should be open again when you go back.

  57. So fun to reminisce! I love the pink dress you wore there! I've only been to Vegas once and it was just for a long weekend... annnnd partying like a rockstar. Lol. I was surprised how much there was to do there! I had the mindset it was just a party place (since that's what I was going to do)! But I'd like to go there again some day and enjoy more of the town especially because Michael's never been there!
