I had been thinking about it for awhile - I struggle with motivation and consistency when it comes to working out. Say I missed a Monday, my whole week would be screwed up. If I worked out Mon-Wed, but took Thursday off, I would then take off the rest of the week. Of course, that's the better end of the stick, sometimes I would take weeks or months off. I didn't want to be like that, I wanted to workout more consistently and look at it as a daily thing but also a lifestyle thing, not per week - like I 'ruined' this week, may as well eat all the food and start again next week. You know? Anyway. I wondered if I could 'trick myself' into working out everyday.
If you follow me on snapchat (kristenlees122) then you are aware (and are probably sick of me sharing my workouts every.damn.day) that it totally worked. I tricked myself. I told myself that I 'had' to share a workout on day 2, then on day 3 etc etc. Now it's kind of like a snowball rolling down a hill and I don't want to stop.
The thing is, I have had several people say something along the lines of motivation and I just have to.. well honestly, laugh. I am the least motivated person I have ever met. No joke.
I am the kind of person who will bail on anything and everything, unless someone is relying on me. I don't ever let people down if I can help it. My bestie and I run every Sunday and I have bailed on her once back in October and I still feel horrible about it. So all I did was post a couple of pictures and then all of a sudden I felt like snapchat - no, not my 'followers' or friends, just snapchat, was 'relying' on me to share a workout. Of course, I know this is ridiculous. But who cares, if it works?
I haven't lost any weight doing this.. actually, I have gained weight. I'd like to tell myself it's because of the weights and muscle weighs more than fat don't ya know, but really it's because I have been eating enough to feed the Duggars.
Also, not all my workouts are hardcore. I have no desire to hurt myself by running or lifting weights every day. The whole point of this for me was to set up a habit, a routine of some sort. Unfortunately, it's not as easy as '21 days to make a habit!' because it's been more than 21 days and I know if I took tomorrow off, I would take 2 weeks off. Like I said, I'm not very good at moderation, or consistency. Hence this little experiment. But the good thing is I know myself and have (hopefully) found what works for me.
I'm not saying everyone should workout every single day, I'm just saying that - so far - it's working for me. Some days I walk, run, do some yoga, body pump, barre, spin or do squats with KC (current PR 105lbs high five!). I listen to my body and take it easy when it tells me to. Will I continue to share pictures of
Linking up with Alyssa and Tracy.
Just as with anything else, you have to do something you enjoy, you have to want to do it, you have to make the time, not find the time. Of course, on a scale from one to busy I am basically a zero. No kids, no real commitments except work, cats who basically look after themselves, a husband who is healthier and fitter than me thus never encourages me to be lazy.. etc etc. Everyone is different, every situation is different and what works for me might not work for you and yadi yadi yada.
So as of right now, I am going to continue this every day thing. Now if I could just get my eating under control.....
You are killing it at the gym lady! I am so proud of you and hey, what ever gives you the motivation to be there is all that matters! Now I need to get back to the gym tonight... <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes
ReplyDeleteWell I'm impressed, and I think it's great you've found something that works for you. I'm also very good at making convincing excuses for myself, like the fact I just made a cake and it 'doesn't last well' so I'll be stuffing my face with it for the next 24 hours. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteYOU ARE DOING AMAZING so keep it up. habits are hard to form but easy to break and you're 100% right in that you have to find something you love to do, otherwise it's just a chore. i started feeling that way about the gym and weight lifting because i had done what i needed to do and was just going through the motions but i'd developed the habit hard enough that i felt guilty NOT going. then muay thai came into my life and well, you know how that is.
ReplyDeletei've been looking at krav maga classes but they're too damn far! have you tried looking into bootcamp classes? some of my other girlfriends also do that on top of muay thai. i'm not a fan but you might be - a good combo of strength and cardio and it's really supportive in that they really cheer you on with your progress etc.
Highest of high fives!!!! You are doing awesome and if you feel like you need to take a day off, don't beat yourself up about it. My workouts have been less than stellar lately. I am just not feeling it. But I show up Monday-Friday because if I miss a day or two...there is a slippery slope for me and I don't want to get to a point where I am missing more than a day here or there. So I totally understand your mentality of having to do something every day, I really do. Dont get me started on eating. I did so good on Whole 30 and now I find little things sneaking their way back in to my life on the daily. I need to find a new plan before I fall in to that rabbit hole too! I did so well just not being able to have anything haha.
ReplyDeleteWhen (if ha ha) I do cardio a lot, I notice it seems like I retain water because I think your body naturally wants to hold onto it for energy. If you're looking for a challenge for March, here's the Pilates one I'm doing! http://thebalancedlifeonline.com/finding-balance/free-30-day-pilates-body-challenge/
ReplyDeleteI've found that this works for me because I don't have to leave my house. That means I'm 100x more likely to do it.
And you're right: consistency is the key.
Get it, girl! You did awesome with 31 days of working out!
ReplyDeleteYou have been doing so awesome girl! I totally get this, I try and do something active everyday just to stay in the habit.
ReplyDeletelol eating enough to feed the duggars. so funny. but in all seriousness you're KILLING it girl! whatever motivates is a good thing in my book! keep up the awesome work out train!
ReplyDeletexoxo cheshire kat
Good for you! I also lack motivation to work out and can totally get on a roll or totally bail for two weeks. You could make some sort of collage of all your pictures and see how big it could get for as long as you go!
ReplyDeleteSo so impressed with this, Kristen! You're an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your 31 days!!! I understand where you're coming from - I get some comments about "Why don't you take days off" on my blog and part of it is the motivation factor. I just find it easier to make it a CONSISTENT part of my day. So glad you are building a great habit!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you have an accountability partner. It really does make a difference in motivation--it's so easy to find an excuse when it's just you.
ReplyDeleteAlso, just followed you on snap! :)
Seriously, that is huge! That is A LOT of days! I told myself I have to go three times a week, and I'm having a hard time sticking with it. I write GYM on the calendar once I'm done because it does make me feel better to look at it. This is too funny, but I was just reading on someone elses blog about personality types or something, and about how they have to trick themselves into being accountable for things and that is so me. Maybe I need to try this snap trick. Also I just added you. Give me motivation!!
ReplyDeleteGood for you!! My husband and I keep talking about joining a gym but we haven't yet. Is it weird that I share my desk calendar photo every day on Snap Chat because I feel like Snap Chats needs me to now that I've started? Haha, I feel your pain with the Snap habit ;) And I just started following you!
ReplyDeleteIve been loving coming on to Snapchat every day and seeing what workout you did! Super motivating to me. I always wondered the story behind it so thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome!! Great job! This has motivated me!
ReplyDeleteYou are KILLING it!
ReplyDeleteYou go girl! Maybe I should try something like this because my motivation SUCKS right now! And I'm right there with ya on eating enough to feed the Duggars ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Kristen! I'm new to your blog, I found you through the link up :)
ReplyDeleteI am really good at sticking to a training plan/running all the time, but any other sort of work out or healthy eating thing? Yep, one missed day means taking the rest of the week off. I tried to keep a daily strength training streak going in February but one missed day turned into two missed days turned into a missed week. I might have to steal your picture idea.
Wooohoo, lady! You are rocking it out. Love that you found a way to be accountable to yourself and that you are feeling good working out. You are so right, it's all about forming a habit you like and knowing showing up is half the battle.
ReplyDeleteKUDOS to you!! Seriously that is quite the accomplishment! I was a competitive athlete all through high school and played sports all year round. I was very into it at all times and liked pushing myself daily. Now that i'm long past that I've learned that i'm the complete opposite of that now. I like working out and feeling good and fit, but I'm not the type of person who can push myself to do sprints or lift weights every day like I once could. I'm more into a casual long jog or a yoga class.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 31 days- that is impressive. The days that matter the most are the days that you don't want to go- even if the workout was bad atleast you got one in. That's something to be proud of and thankful for!
ReplyDeletecongrats!!! i need to work on working out during vi's naps! xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteI like that you posted it and that there seems to be no reasoning behind when you started! I am bummed that a habit didn't form in 21 days, though, because I always read that and hoped it was true (but never stuck around long enough to find out). I'm on week two, day two of trying not to eat like a small horse + going to the gym more days than not and it's no fun but it's nice to know that not everyone enjoys the gym like I imagine they do! (Seriously, everyone looks so focused, it's intimidating...)
ReplyDeleteI struggle with motivation, too, and it's sometimes just a matter of finding that one thing that keeps you going. It's awesome that you found it and 31 consecutive days is impressive as hell.
ReplyDeleteIts about making something a habit... keep it up girl!
ReplyDeleteGreat job!! Love the idea of numbering each workout and setting a goal with it!!
ReplyDeleteHow have I NOT been following you on snapchat ?! Granted I don't post and just creep instead but still. Huge freaking congrats on your 31 day streak :)
ReplyDeleteYou are doing awesome! I love seeing your day-count snap every morning. Seriously, just getting to the gym can be an accomplishment - and you go early! The habit part is so good to get into - I don't go every day, but my body knows when I've gone too long without a good workout. I crave them!
ReplyDeleteoooh awesome! Great accomplishment! :) :) XO -Alexandra
ReplyDeleteSimply Alexandra: My Favorite Things
You're so awesome! I think it's great that you've gotten yourself in that habit - and you don't force yourself to run/lift weights every day. I was just thinking, holy shit, how do you do 31 days in a row?!?! (BECAUSE YOU'RE A BADASS - that's how!)
ReplyDeleteI'm depending on you (via snapchat) and love seeing your feet daily! :) Keep it up as long as it's working for you. That's muscle on the scale, be proud and make it stop taunting you!
ReplyDeleteYou're amazing, lady! I've been the worst working out through this pregnancy, but I'm trying to make a point of going out - even if it's just for 1 mile of running a day, plus a little walk. I MUST MAKE IT THROUGH THIS WINTER AND PREGNANCY!
ReplyDeleteI'm proud of you!!!! This is awesome.
ReplyDeleteI did have to laugh like a hyena at "eating enough to feed the Duggars."
Great idea-- being accountable to others is a STRONG source of motivation! Maybe I should post a pic of all the bad food I eat to shame me out of eating it! :) Make today work, Rachel -CubicleCouture
ReplyDeleteNow I know what the numbers mean! I should try this.
ReplyDeleteI love your gym snaps! I'm virtually high fiving you every time I see one, just so you know. I love that you found something that helps you stay accountable. Snapchat is totally relying on you! ;)
ReplyDeleteAlso LOL at eating enough to feed the Duggars. Our trainer did a little weight/measurement evaluation on our first day of boxing and I'm dreading the re-eval because I'm sure I've gained weight. I'm going to feel so bad, I don't want the trainer to think it's his fault because it's totally mine for eating all the things (not a habit I plan to change anytime soon btw).
Get it girl!!! 31 days straight of workouts is SUPER impressive!
ReplyDeleteHaving a workout buddy is seriously the best accountability right?
ReplyDeleteSometimes I swear the harder I try working out the more weight I gain! It really is bazaar! Congrats to you though! That's amazing! Working out with a friend is always way better than alone! Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteStop the madness . . . this is awesome! I am so proud of you! You're so proud of you! The Internets are so proud of you! Because doing this consistently is hard and you did it! Bam! Rock star.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm going to need you to get out of my head . . . yes to all the "crazy" thoughts you have about working out, accountability, perfectionist tendencies, starting and stopping, more stopping than starting . . . you get what I mean. I just followed you on Snapchat (which I still find super confusing . . . even after watching how to videos), so don't let me down. I'm kidding. You know that, right? I'd be a terrible friend to you because I'd be like . . . let's sit here and eat snacks and pet cats . . . working out is so boring. Good news is that I start an 8 week boot camp challenge next week - I need to get off the couch. :-) Keep it up girl!
Great job!!! I definitely am up and down with how often I go - I am trying to just keep Friday as an off day. So far so good...at least for a week!
ReplyDeletewhoa.. that is awesome. cute shoes.
ReplyDeleteGreat job K! You are KILLING IT!
ReplyDeleteSO proud of you! I love seeing your snaps-- it IS always so motivating, and makes me wish not only I could wake myself up early, just go to the gym at some point, because I'm with you on when you miss one day you just give up on the rest of the week. Also I am sooo impressed with your squats-- I kind of gave up because I can't get past 65lbs :( but I love how much variety you have in workout!
ReplyDeleteThese are the kinds of things that keep me motivated too. I snap chat things I cook and people seem to like it so it keeps me cooking healthy... most of the time. Good job!
ReplyDeleteYou've been rockin' it gurlie! And of course those HP tees <3
ReplyDeleteGreen Fashionista
Yay! I'm so excited for you, friend! You have been killing it! Building those habits can be so hard, but totally worth it! Go you! :)
ReplyDeleteWay to go! I sometimes find myself falling into that same slump of, "Well I guess since I missed working out this morning I'll just sit on my butt and eat all the food". I loved that you used a number to stay motivated though, and hopefully you can keep it going! I feel like as soon as I start working out, I'm hungry ALL THE TIME! I want to eat everything in sight, and it's not good when you want to lose weight!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome, you go girl!
ReplyDeleteHey - if it works, it works!!! Great job. I think that's an awesome way to stay motivated. Plus, you have a little journal of memories along the way. It's amazing how good it feels to work out regularly and how quickly one can forget that when they cease doing so.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to find something that works! I find things like working out go a lot better if I don't give myself a choice and just do it every day. Also, my favorite part about exercising is eating more :)
ReplyDeleteGood job lady! Getting motivated to go to the gym can be tough but that's why I love group fitness classes, like Body Pump, to help motivate me! Plus, I think it's easy to burn out quickly if you get into working out like crazy if it's something you're not used to (this was me a few years ago). So, just doing something like walking is better than nothing at all.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome that you found a motivating factor that works for you! Keep the snaps coming!
ReplyDeleteThe idea of snapchat "relying" on your daily workout photo made me giggle, but I know what you mean. I'm back on the working out wagon, with 3 days in a row after a few weeks off because of illness. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteSometimes feeling like you're answerable almost to someone or something really can help chivvy you along, but it seems to be working so good on you :) I hope you manage to keep it up.
ReplyDeleteWay to go on holding yourself accountable! You've made it a constant in your life now and you should be so incredibly proud of yourself! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome...good for you!! I definitely think that whatever it takes to motivate you is what you need to stick to - like you said, at least until it is a firm habit. I am trying to be a lot more consistent with workouts and not use "being busy" as an excuse but unfortunately sometimes sick kiddos trump working out. haha. I feel like I should try Snapchat sometime...it sounds so interesting but I just haven't bit the bullet yet.
ReplyDeleteYou are awesome!! You are my inspiration - I want to work towards getting to the gym much more often. Don't think I can make it every single day due to school twice a week in the evenings..but I'm going to shoot for 4-5 days a week! Keep at it lady!! xx
ReplyDeleteYou go girl!!! I totally want to work at working out more and get a more established routine but I find myself being lazy. I think you just gave me the kick in my arse that I needed!
ReplyDeleteSay I missed a Monday, my whole week would be screwed up. If I worked out Mon-Wed, but took Thursday off, I would then take off the rest of the week. <- THIS SO MUCH. This is why I've started telling people that "every damn day" isn't a requirement. Because this does happen. One little slip-up derails picking up the next day for SO MANY of us. Including me!
ReplyDeleteBUT. I'm so proud of you for giving this method of motivation a whirl and letting it bolster you and keep you at it. I love seeing your daily numbered post. And honestly, yeah, who cares if it works? I was just talking about this with Bad Yogi fam yesterday. It doesn't need to make sense or be "right" as long as it works for you.
And you know that not every day has to be an intense day. Any coach or trainer will tell you rest is as important for the body as the workout is. You gotta alternate and find the balance. You're doing great, and I'm so proud of you.
You are doing awesome! You have to find what works for you and it's good that you've done that! I'm slowly figuring that out as well. I'm the same way though if I miss a Monday it throws off my entire week and sometimes I'll go days without it and then feel bad like I'm letting someone down.
ReplyDeleteYou're right not every work out has to be hardcore or too extreme. As long as you're up and moving and doing something then you're doing great!
"I have no desire to hurt myself"... HAHAHA!!! I started busting out laughing. You are doing amazing. Habits are difficult to form and dedication/motivation falls in the same "difficult" category but figuring out what works for you is the best you can do.
ReplyDeleteEating enough to feed the Duggars,Hahahaha!
ReplyDeleteI love your gym/feet snaps but the kitty ones are my fav, not gonna lie;)
I'm the same, if I don't exercise on Sunday (the official first day of the week in my head) then the rest of the week is likely to be a huge fail.
Keep it up, it def is motivating!
You go girl!!! No matter how big or small the workout is, it's better than nothing! I'm with you... I've been doing okay with my exercise regimen however I can't stop eating allll the foods!
ReplyDeleteFor me, the best part about this post is knowing yourself. That is so important. I am still learning about myself. But, knowing and embracing yourself is the most important lesson for me that I got out of this whole post. (and that I think you are superwoman in disguise)
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! That's such a great idea to keep motivated. I struggle with motivation as well... I've been working out more this year (had taken months off before the beginning of the year), but I've let myself skip all but one day this week. You're totally right that missing one day can throw off the whole week.
ReplyDeleteLOLed at eating enough to feed the Duggars!
i loved seeing your daily number for your workout on snapchat!! good for you for doing it--totally in awe. kudos!!
ReplyDeleteI think it's awesome that you've found something that works for you... regardless of where the "motivation" is coming from - if it works, it works!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! That sounds like a neat trick to keep going every day and the best part is that it's been working for you. I've been going to the gym on and off but hopefully I will end up sticking to a more consistent routine.
ReplyDelete"eating enough to feed the Duggars" LOL so funny. I feel the exact same way, some days. Well good job little lady! That deserves some MAJOR props!! :) Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteIf you could feed the Duggars, you'd be way huge. But I'm with you - when I take time off from working out, I lose weight and when I work out I put it on. When I did my yoga teacher training I put on like 10 pounds! It was muscle, but I was also just bigger too. I think it's because I was eating all the time due to working out all the time! Whatever it is, it's bunk.
ReplyDeleteI was cheering you on all month. You are an inspiration - I mean that. I struggle with consistency, too. Truth be told, I'm just much happier to sit my little booty on the couch and Netflix (bad, yes). I will get into a "routine", miss a day, and then I'm out for weeks... no exaggeration. I may try to do something like this. I bet my husband would do it with me, he's been wanting to work out again.

ReplyDeleteI definitely need a workout buddy to hold me accountable because I'll totally bail on it too! One time my friend literally had a comeback for every excuse I made and so I was forced to go, and in the end was happy, but it was just getting myself there that was the tough part, haha. You're killing it though, I need to get on your level!
ReplyDeleteOmg, that's awesome! I seriously need a way to give myself accountability, because right now I am in the pit. I signed up for an online training package thinking, "If I spend money it, that'll motivate me, right?" Newp. The most I ever worked out was when I had a bunch of workout buddies plus races to train for. Unfortunately, they've all disappeared and I'm left by my unmotivated lonesome.
ReplyDeleteYou have been killing it at the gym! It's all about finding what motivates you and what works for you, I'm so glad that you found that something for the time being. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteI agree that it's all about finding exactly what motivates you/works for you and then sticking with it. Clearly you've found it because this is seriously awesome and impressive! :-)
ReplyDeleteI used to be really bad about the whole missing a day and screwing up your entire week thing. I'm still not perfect when it comes to that line of thinking (not even close!), but I'm learning to be a little more flexible with my workouts and when I do them. I figure as long as I'm trying and doing something active several times each week, that's good. I mean, it's definitely better than sitting on my butt all evening watching TV!
