Books Lately

I don't know what's going on lately, but almost everything I pick up lately is bleccch. I don't know if it's the books or me, but I'm just not feeling reading lately. Nothing is jumping out at me 'read me read me' you know? The two books I really did enjoy were both audiobooks. Hopefully it will pick up this month...

The Trouble with Destiny - Lauren Morrill - 2 Stars
I  received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I am sure 12 year old me would have enjoyed this book, but 28 year old me did not. This was an easy book, but it wasn't exciting. I feel like I'd read this exact book before, that's how predictable it was. I didn't like any of the characters and I also really disliked the way the author brought up a memory every single page like she was incapable of talking to someone without also including a tidbit about their past that had absolutely nothing to do with the story. It was just full of cliches and I kept waiting for it to get better, but then it was over. That being said, if the target audience is 12-14, then I'm sure they will like it. That's the gamble you take when you read YA, sometimes it's very 'Y'.

What Alice Forgot - Liane Moriarty - 5 Stars

I absolutely adore Liane Moriarty. The Husband's Secret was good, Big Little Lies was amazing, and What Alice Forgot might be my favourite yet. I love books like these (hard to explain without spoilers, basically I love books where people look back, see how they've changed). I just loved this book so much I wanted to hug it. I kept thinking about the end of the book for a couple weeks after, which is always a good sign.

To be completely honest, even though Liane Moriarty is a fabulous writer, I love her books for all the Australianisms. I feel like I'm at home when I'm reading about letterboxes and freddo frogs.

Confess - Colleen Hoover - 3 Stars

Picked this one up on a whim. Eh. I didn't really like or connect with the characters or the romance. I didn't hate it, but didn't feel wildly crazy about it either. I thought some parts were good but others were boring. Overall I just didn't feel anything so it was a big fat meh.
Girl of Nightmares - Kendare Blake - 2 Stars

Really enjoyed the first book (Anna Dressed in Blood) and I wanted to love this one, but I just didn't. I hate to give it 2 stars, and I hate comparing books but it's kind of necessary in a sequel. Where the first book was funny, fast paced and interesting, this book was boring, slow, and I just didn't care about what was happening, the characters, or the ending. Such a disappointment.

Revolution - Jennifer Donnelly - 2 Stars

Do you ever read a book that other people LOVE but you just can't see what they see? I wanted to love this (I never go into a book hoping to hate it) but I just didn't. I kept waiting for it to grab me or get better. I get that the main character was going through something I have never gone through so wouldn't know how to deal with it, but you know what? I don't care. Because as an author, you should write characters I like, even if I like to hate them. I shouldn't just hate them, or not relate at all. I didn't care about any of the characters, although the historical fiction part was very interesting, until it took a nosedive into a super weird twist I still don't even understand. I started writing this review as 3 stars but I'm realising I really just did not enjoy it so it gets 2 stars.
Little Beach Street Bakery - Jenny Colgan - 3 Stars

This book was cute. Parts of it were 4 stars, but overall it was more of a 3 or 3.5 stars at most. It was cute, fluffy, nice, but super predictable and at times a bit boring. There were a few errors that really took me out of the book, I hate when that happens. Overall though, it was cute. I liked the little town and the story, I just feel like it could have been a bit better. I might read the second one because I want to know what happened afterwards.
The Girl with All the Gifts - M.R. Carey - 4 Stars

I had been meaning to read this book for ages, but something kept turning me off. Eventually Erin told me she liked it even though it wasn't something she'd normally pick up, so I decided to give it a whirl. This is definitely not something I'd normally read - post apocalyptic type - but it was definitely interesting. I really had no idea what to expect and I ended up really enjoying the story and the characters - the characters were some of the most interesting and most developed I've read in a long time. Definitely recommend.
Forever, Interrupted - Taylor Jenkins Reid - 3 Stars

Another 'meh' book. I feel like this had such promise, but fell a bit flat for me. I have mentioned a thousand times that I cry SO easily, like insanely easily (think hallmark commercials), and I did not cry in this book. I obviously have never been through something like this before, but it never really grabbed me or whatever. I don't think it was very well written either. I didn't like the alternating timelines. Perhaps my expectations were too high. Eh.

I actually feel sorry for the books I read this past month because I can't tell if they were bad, or if I just wasn't in a reading mood and by pushing it, I made myself dislike these books, you know?

TL;DR I recommend What Alice Forgot and The Girl with All the Gifts. I actually listened to both of these and both narrators were top notch.

Linking up with Steph and Jana.

  2. LOVED What Alice Forgot, such a great book. I love the quote at the beginning, so very true! It's weird when you have a bunch of books that are under 4 stars, totally get the feeling. Girl with all the Gifts sounds interesting.

I am still sort of "meh" with books after Winter. I've read a few that were okay, but I really think I need to re-read something fantastic soon and put my heart into reading again!!

  6. i totally shit the bed with reading since november...basically since i started working again because work ruins everything. however....my svp gave me a book to read called Saturn Run and he said it was very Martian-esque so i've been reading a few chapters a night before bed and i really like it!

  7. I just added What Alice Forgot to my to be read list! I love Liane Moriarty's other books so I am sure I will love this one too...Also I follow Reese Witherspoon on Instagram, and I saw the other day that she posted a picture about being on the set of Big Little Lies. I looked it up and I guess HBO is making a short series based on the book. I am curious to see how it turns out!

  9. Sorry it was such a blah month. Sometimes you can totally get into a rut and can't perceive the books the same. What Alice Forgot is on my list so I am totally going to check it out.

  10. I'm definitely intrigued by The Girl with All the Gifts...and now that my subway ride is a little longer with my new job, I have an excuse to read more!

  16. Well the fact that you still gave What Alice Forgot 5 stars says to me that it's not you, it's the books that were lackluster this month! I just came over from another blog (Doused in Pink) and she read and enjoyed the newest Liane Moriarty book "Three Wishes." So I'm adding that one to my list now too!

  17. I hate when I'm not into reading or can't find books that are getting me hooked. It's such a downer. I felt the same way after reading Confess. It had some good parts but overall it was just so-so. And I completely agree with you about What Alice Forgot. That was my favourite Lianne Moriarty book as well! :)

I keep meaning to just throw up a book post with reviews of all the ones I've read over the past few months :) I wanted to link up with this book post though! Hmmm... darn it! haha it's so not ready. Oh well, maybe next month! I've been reading some decent mystery ones lately though. And I binge watched Making a Murderer (like everyone else in America/Canada) all weekend - sooooo good. And SO crazy. I am still in shock at how things went down for that family. Highly recommend it! (I know it's not a book, but still)

  18. I really enjoy listening to Liane Moriarty books - actually, I have never read one with my eyes. The narrator she seems to use on everyone one I've read is great. I really liked Forever, Interrupted. I'm not usually a crier about much of anything but somehow, I was able to put myself in that position of having forever with someone and then not, and it got me. And I liked the friendship in all of it! For some reason, it just got me.

  19. Hopping over from A Peek at Karen's World who recommended your blog space very highly :) Hope you are enjoying your 2016 so far and thank you for these book recs! I have just added The Girl With All The Gifts to my Goodreads list (LOVED that Liane Moriarty book, too--her writing/characters are easy to love).

    XOXO

  20. I seem to go on roller coaster rides with books - all great - then all suck... I'm sure you'll find your book groove again soon.

  21. I really enjoyed What Alice Forgot but it wasn't my favorite of hers. I enjoy Taylor Jenkins Reid's book because I know EXACTLY what I'm getting when I read them and I appreciate that. Confess had potential but didn't live up to it. The Girl with All the Gifts is on my TBR but I keep not getting around to it.

I had a meh month as well. Nothing knocked me down from awesomeness.

  24. What Alice Forgot is my favorite Moriarty book by far. I've actually been going through a time with my books when everything I read seems to be pretty good to really good. But i've also been through my fair share of times where everything I pick up is boring me or not hooking me. just gotta keep on reading! :)

  34. I've been wanting to read What Alice Forgot and just keep forgetting about it. Adding it to my list now!

I've been terrible at carving out time to read lately - one of my goals for January is to get back at it!

  35. I hate getting into a book and not liking it ... I try to give every book a chance by reading 3 or 4 chapters. But then if I truly can't stand it, I feel like I'm already sucked in and have to finish it. I think I added What Alice Forgot to my reading list already - thanks for the reviews!

  37. I'm on the waitlist for What Alice Forgot, so hopefully that will come soon!
I've read two Colleen Hoover books. I don't even remember which ones. I remember giving one a high rating, but I had no interest in reading more. Not sure, but I'm missing a connection with her too.
Melanie is badass (Girl/Gifts). You know this.

  39. What Alice Forgot is one of those books that I have had on my Kindle for over a year (maybe more?), and I haven't gotten around to reading it yet! I need to get around to reading it ASAP.

  40. The Girl With All The Gifts sounds interesting! "I just loved this book so much I wanted to hug it." This is the top book quote of 2016. I'm calling it early.

  41. What Alice Forgot is one of my favorite books of all time, and definitely my favorite Liane Moriarty! I was really glad that I read The Husband's Secret first because to me, it just didn't compare to What Alice Forgot. I'm reading Little Beach Street Bakery right now, and I'm with you, it's cute, but nothing incredibly special.

  42. What Alice Forgot has been my favorite Liane Moriarty book so far! I'm hoping that they make it into a movie since I know they are with Big Little Lies. I really need to get back into reading again - Christmas/the holidays threw me off my game!

  50. Just put a hold on The Girl With All The Gifts!! I'm a fan of post apocalyptic. I liked What Alice Forgot, I agree it really did stick with me. I think I enjoyed The Husband's Secret the most out of her books though.

  51. I did really enjoy What Alice Forgot. Did you read The Hypnotist's Love Story or Three Wishes? Her newer stuff (i.e. not those) is better.

  52. oh bummer. I have been reading a lot lately, and enjoying it! Right now I'm reading Lauren Graham's book... it's a little tough for me to get through the middle. Maybe it's just that I never wondered too much about being an actor? Maybe it's that I want more character development of the supporting characters? I don't know. I'm not even halfway done, so I'm hoping it picks up. :) Hope you find more you like this month! XO - Alexandra

  55. It seems like "meh" books have been going around (at least a little). You and Jana both mentioned the "meh" factor with the majority of your books this time around, and I feel the same way about the books I've read so far this year. I had such a strong start in 2015 with a 5 star book ... And then this year I've had a mostly fluffy and fun (but still just okay) 3 star book and a horribly boring and awful 1 star book. (The last part of your review for Girl of Nightmares could have been my review for this book. I had to force myself to pick the book up and finish it because I honestly just didn't care by the end.)

Right now I'm reading my nonfiction pick for the SCWBC15, and it's honestly pretty boring. I hope it gets better and becomes more of the true crime book I imagined it would be, but right now I feel like I'm reading a history textbook. Whomp whomp. (But hey, if I had to force myself to get through the fiction part of that category, I'm going to get through the nonfiction part!)

I'm planning to read What Alice Forgot at some point this year. I'm also glad you liked The Girl With All the Gifts! :-)

  56. I'm into my third book this year and I'm having the same feelings of everything just being so-so. I just want to read a book I LOOOOVE, haha. I'm torn on wanting to read Forever, Interrupted because I've been split on her other books that I've read, but for now I'll probably just skip it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. What Alice Forgot was definitely one of my 2015 faves. I'm sad that Forever, Interrupted wasn't that good. It's on my Kindle for eons waiting to be read.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm feeling a bit of a reading rut too. I've gotten lucky with my last and current audiobooks, but everything else I've picked up I've just not been in a hurry to get back to reading. I think it's me, not the books though.

I STILL haven't read anything by Liane Moriarty. I have to hold for anything of hers from the library, but I keep forgetting to put myself on the hold list because something available now catches my attention instead. I'll try to remember next time :)

  59. The Girl With Gifts totally looks like my kind of book.

  60. Your probably not in the mood for reading books because you've read a gazillion! Lol. I've been writing down some of your suggestions on top rated books and I think I might have to pickup either the Husband's secret or Alice forgot one! Sounds interesting!

  61. The Girl With All the Gifts is a book I think I'd like. Will have to check it out. I just finished White Walls: A Memoir About Motherhood, Daughterhood, and the Mess In Between. I tried to like it; I really did. But it bored me to death and was too fancy for me.

  63. I've just downloaded What Alice Forgot for my commute tomorrow, so thanks! I've been having a massive struggle with books recently. Nothing has interested me and I thought I'd have read heaps over the break and I just didn't. Most frustrating. I think I need another holiday :)
