Bye 2015, hello lots of races in 2016 (hopefully)

I know everyone and their dog is saying this, but: December? End of 2015?! Where did the year go? Where is my life going?! Okay, calm down.

This is the last Training for Tuesday for 2015! I love this link up because it helps me stay accountable, and aware of my current fitness routines / situation. Meaning, if I know I have to write about it, I might actually work out.

I've been working on baby step goals for the last couple of months, so I have been trying to focus on just one 'big' thing rather than making and not achieving 10 little goals.

Last month, I mentioned that I really wanted to:

Get my portion sizes under control
I didn't really do anything towards this, turns out the holidays weren't the best time to attempt something like this. Oh well.

Eat more fruits and vegetables
The only way I'm going to get all my fruits & veggies every day is by having a smoothie for breakfast (banana, strawberries, blueberries & spinach). It takes 2 seconds to make if I prep the night before. I think I had one for breakfast most mornings, if not, I had my oatmeal and blueberries. I didn't have a strong veggie game though, unless you count beans.

Work out 3-4 times a week
Super pass! At the end of November, KC and I had a super long talk about how unhappy I was at my gym.. seems silly, but it was so limited and it made me not want to workout. I used to love body pump in Australia, but only one place offers it here, and a couple other places offer copy cat classes, but all of them were too expensive or far away. I only paid $10 a month at planet fitness, but if I wasn't going, it was $10 too much. KC goes to the gym and the pool, and the YMCA (or do I just call it the Y?) has a pool, classes, weights, cardio etc etc. I joined after Thanksgiving and he will join next year when his gym & pool memberships run out. We haven't been a member of the same gym in a couple years, so it will be nice to workout together again, even if it's just weekends.

Since I joined, I have been going to 2-3 body pump classes a week, plus running or cross training (yoga, barre, elliptical) 3 times a week. I hurt my knee around the middle of the month and had to back off a bit, but I still stayed strong.

It's amazing what a difference it makes when you actually like what you are doing. I know everyone says that, but I was always like 'well I like running, I like yoga, I like strength training'. Trouble was, I didn't like where or how I was doing it. Also, the membership is quite a bit more expensive than planet fitness, so it helps me get out of bed in the morning. Plus, it's closer to work whereas planet fitness was close to my house, which meant I still had morning traffic to deal with after my workout. This way, I beat traffic and am 5 minutes away from work.

Now the real test will be sticking to it in the new year when the gym is packed and there is no room to move. We'll see!

I'm not going to set monthly goals for January, but I did want to talk about the races I would like to do in 2016. I am only registered for one right now, and races can really add up so I doubt I will do all of them, but it would be nice!

Anthem 5k - 27th February

Rodes City 10k - 12th March

Papa John's 10 miler - 26th March

The Glo Run - sometime in June

The Color Run - also sometime in June

YMCA Turkey Trot - Thanksgiving

Also, thinking of another race in November, we'll see...

Of course, I'd do a race almost every weekend if I could afford it, but Louisville doesn't offer a whole lot and when you start travelling for races it adds up even more, so I like to keep the travel to a minimum if possible, and really make it worth it when I go (I wouldn't travel for a 5k). So yeah. That's how my 2016 looks, but I'd love to travel for at least one race....

Enjoy the rest of 2015 everyone! Got any lofty goals for 2016?

  1. it's 100000% true that you will never consider exercise as exercise/a chore if you *enjoy* it. I like running as well but discovered pretty quick that road running bores me to death (hated it) and that trail running is where it's at for me. and of course, you know about muay thai which isn't even exercise at all because it's so much fun that 2hrs fly by, you're totally gassed and you want more.

  2. way to go on getting out of your gym you didn't like! it so matters if you're not inspired. even when it comes to workout clothes - every little bit helps! nice work on those smoothies too! so yum :)

  3. I completely agree. It helps if you find an exercise you enjoy that way it doesn't feel like a chore. It's about to kill me because I've had to lay off for a bit because of my back!
Looks like you have a lot of races coming up! You'll do great!

  4. Totally agree with you on the gym thing - I joined a new one at the end of October and it made all the difference in the world. I'm excited to hear more about your races in 2016! I just sat down and made my list the other day of the ones that I want to run... 2016 is going to be full of running :)

  5. I have a friend that does the Derby half marathon. Have you thought about the Bourbon Chase in Paris in the fall? Its a two day thing and you race as a team. I know several people that do that. I did the Dyslexia Dash in Frankfort. First 5K I've ever done. My brain says, you should run its fun but my body says, nah not so much.

  6. OK girl - we gotta find each other at these races... I'm doing the Triple Crown & Mini myself...

  7. Love your goals!! Nothing is better than a good sweat sesh!! Have you ever tried the 21 day fix portion control containers!? They really helped me out :)

  8. The Color Run and Glo Run always look like so much fun! I need to get motivated to go running again and hopefully run a few 5Ks next year as well!

  9. Great idea on switching your gym! I Think that's a great idea to get one that's a bit more expensive but more convenient and with classes that you enjoy. I would do the same thing! Body pump is so much fun :)

  10. I like to travel for races, which is why I end up not racing much! There are a few local races I like to do, but no "big" races - like half or fulls. It does add up!

  11. I'm so happy you got honest with KC about your Planet Fitness membership and you made the switch! It really does make a complete difference to be in a place that offers exactly what you need to be successful. Even if if does cost a bit more you benefit in the long run. Speaking of long runs, lol, what a race schedule! Best of luck finalizing your registrations and planning for the best year yet!

  12. I love how well organized you are for upcoming races! I think it helps to see the whole year laid out like that. I'm wavering if I should do a half in January or not, but i think it is too late to feel good about fitting in the training!

  13. I'm SO proud of you! And you look amazing! What a way to end your year and start 2016 off right. I'm so glad you changed gyms - you're right, if you weren't happy at the old one even a dollar a month is too much to pay. I had the same dilemma this summer, I could either join the Y (expensive but pool, spin, yoga, etc.) or join the rec center (cheap, pool but no classes I wanted to take). Like, yeah I could spin and do yoga at home but I knew I wasn't going to do that so I paid for the Y since it had everything I needed.
Your race schedule looks great and I hope we can make it to one together!

  14. I wish we had a YMCA closer to us, I think they have amazing offerings and are a good community rather than just "a gym." But alas it's all the way down town and I'm stuck with my cheap little gym around the corner. It does have body pump though and my goal is to go to at least the Sunday class every week since the weekday classes overlap my work schedule :(

  15. So proud of you for a successful month! It's awesome that you were able to look at what wasn't working for you (the gym) and come up with a solution that would work for you and KC.

Also, now that I'm in YTT and have unlimited yoga classes at all my studio's locations, sometimes I have to force myself NOT to go to class. Having a place you love to do a thing you love or like to do makes all the difference in the world.

Love your race lineup for 2016. Fingers crossed you get to participate in all the ones you really want to run!

  16. We are going to check out our local YMCA (or Y) this weekend, too! I feel the exact same way about my gym - it's locally owned, which I'm always an advocate of, but it's only machines and weights. I easily get bored and would love to get back into the groove of classes. I'm so glad to hear that you're much happier with the gym now!

  17. I have noticed you posting a lot more snaps from the gym lately (which makes me like you even more on Snapchat, LOL), so I'm glad to hear the new, more expensive membership is worth it! Love how organized you are with your goals and your race plans for next year. I am not motivated for 2016 yet but I want to be!

  18. I am totally dreading the classes after New Years. I went to body pump yesterday and it was sooooo EMPTY (assuming everyone is still hiding at home stuffing cookies into their mouths). I shell out a bunch for a gym too because I ONLY like going to group fitness classes and I rarely (if ever) use the rest of the gym. But it's worth it to me.

  19. Sounds like a solid plan. You go girl!!

  20. You and me both sister!!!! You have no idea how much I'm putting my health in gear next month. So important!

    ReplyDelete
  21. You are so inspiring with your fitness! I really need to kick it back into high gear in 2016. Totally fell off the wagon with it this year. Portion control is a major struggle for me too, ugh!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Dang, that's a lot of runs!! I'm looking into signing up for a Planet Fitness-like gym (it's the same concept--super cheap) but I'm nervous that I'll hate it too! What did you not like about it? The classes? The equipment? I guess I should tour one before I decide.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If you want to come up and do the 500 festival 5k with me (I'm not up for a half marathon), I'm in!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wow, that's a lot of races in 2016! That smoothie you make looks delicious. I'm really trying to eat more fruits and veggies too, but they're so expensive! Boo. Haha.

  25. I love that you and KC are going to be members at the same gym! That's HUGE for hubs and me. It's an activity that we can do together, and it's fun to workout. Our gym offers tons of classes so we can do whatever we're feeling that day - weights, cardio, yoga, whatever! It's great for the body and your marriage. I just signed up for my first post-baby race (just a 5k) but I'm pumped to get back into the running groove too!

  26. Always good to incorporate more fruits and veggies! I'm always a fan of a good smoothie (especially blueberry) for breakfast or meal replacement. So many fun races lined up for the year. Hope you get to run and conquer the better half of them. Always to make goals!

    ReplyDelete
  27. What a fun race lineup! The Color Run is such a fun race, and I love a turkey trot :)

  28. I dusted my juicer off so it would look like it'd been used before company came for the holidays. I need more fruits and veggies in my life -- looks like that's back on the resolution list for me. Great race line-up too! I'm doing 3 of those (10k, 10 miler, and the KDF half). Indianapolis has a lot of races and isn't too far away, if you're looking for more to do. Check out www.runningintheusa.com too - I found a race to do while we were on vacation in South Carolina. :)

  29. Good for you. It's important to love the gym you go too, otherwise, you won't want to go. Oddly enough, I found out that I work out better in larger gyms than smaller gyms. My boyfriend and I have our eyes on 2016. We're setting some weight loss goals as we speak.

  30. Hooray for finding a gym you like! That definitely helps!

  31. I'm always so impressed when I see your snaps from the gym so early. How do you do it??? Do you go to bed early, or are you just a morning person??? I'm glad you found a gym with classes and options that you like, I know what you mean about it being a waste if you weren't ever wanting to go before because you weren't happy with what was offered. I can't wait to follow along with your running/races!

    ReplyDelete
  32. It makes a huge difference when you like the gym. I was struggling with one and I just had to end my membership. It is just a waste if you don't want to go. Hope you get to do all the races, it does get really expensive after a few.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm so glad that you found a better gym that has a lot more to offer. I feel like having options (all in one place) makes working out more fun and consequently more desirable? I struggle with that too because there are only a few things that I typically do when I'm at the gym... I've kind of stopped doing the classes but I really want to get back into that. Body Pump is my fave! I figure that if I try doing a bit of dance (two nights a week), a bit of the gym (2-3 times per week) and a bit of yoga, then it's all kind of evenly spread out and doesn't get boring. I just couldn't fathom going to the gym EVERY day. Unless I have a personal trainer to tell me what to do. But that's not an option because I'm poor. LOL...

That's my fave smoothie!!! I love adding spinach because you can't even tell it's in there. So sneaky! Yum!!
