Favourites Lately

Oy vey am I ready for the freaking weekend. But first, favourites with Amanda!

Favourite Post Favourite Anything if you only read one thing in this post, please read Steph's post here specifically #8 but really, just read it all.

I always enjoy reading Steph's blog but I especially love that she puts a voice to things that I am thinking or feeling but can't quite articulate. Call me ignorant, but I hate watching the news and whatnot because I hate knowing how awful the world is. But if and when I do learn things, they upset me but I am able to separate it and move on with my normal, boring but happy life. Except when it comes to guns. I cannot move on with that, I cannot understand why this is still a thing. I just don't get it. What will it take? Please tell me, what will it take? I cannot live here and be scared to go to the movies, or be scared to send my kids to school. I cannot raise kids in a country that cares more about guns than people.

Please read Steph's post if you haven't already.

Favourite dry shampoo

I've been using batiste for ages, but it wasn't until I finally got my hands on the brunette version that it changed my hair washing life. Also, my friend gave me the tip to put it on before you go to bed, which I had heard of before but never tried - sometimes you need a friend to tell you. Anyway, I can go a week without washing and it's amazing. However, when you wash it out (if you use the brunette stuff) don't freak out, it will look like dye washing out but it's not. Don't freak out like I did. Anyway. Highly recommend. It's often on sale at Walgreens.

Favourite Netflix find

The other day KC and I had a couple drinks and were trying to find something to watch on Netflix. He wanted something serious and I wanted something fun. I found Carl Barron and begged KC to watch it. He liked it but couldn't sit through the whole thing. I don't know if you would like it, but if you like observational humour / australian humour.. I recommend. I was seriously rolling off the couch and crying because I was laughing so hard. If you've ever met me.. that's a big deal because I'm not really a laugh out loud person.

At the very least, you should watch the below video (not from the netflix show). It's only like 5 minutes and hilarious.

Favourite Purchase

We have a grill. We don't really use it, it's too much muck around. So I thought about buying a George Foreman Grill and then it was on mega sale (which I found out using my handy dandy camel trick) so I impulse bought it. 'Scuse my language, but we've used the shit out of it and it's amazing. Seriously, don't buy it anywhere else as it's like $20 cheaper on Amazon.
Favourite Movie

KC and I rarely go to the movies, but we both wanted to see The Martian after loving the book. We all know the movies are never as good as the book, but holy shitballs the movie was good. Of course, they cut a lot out and there were some parts we didn't love, but overall.. I highly recommend the movie, even if you haven't read the book.

Happy Friday all!

  1. Uhm yes. Holy freaking goodness so ready for the weekend! I've been OBSESSED with batiste for years. Every time I stray, I always go back and think "nothing is as good as this." I don't care for the brunette version though because it leaves a bit of grit and texture to my hair (which can be a good thing in certain situations, though). I might have to pull it back out and try it again.

  2. love that dry shampoo and that's one of my fave ways to use it. and i like using a towel to really rub it in.

  3. Her post was great on gun control -- I can't even tell you how scared I am to send my kid to school in about five years. I can't imagine how bad it might be by then. I can't wait to see the Martian -- although it'll probably be out in Redbox before i'll be able to get to it! Have a good weekend!!

  4. Batiste is the best! I've been using it for years and the brunette is a definite staple for me. I've heard mixed reviews of the movie, so I might just wait till its in red box to watch it. Have a great weekend!

  5. Can't wait to see The Martian - it looks so good!! Even though movies about outer space always end up making me cry at some point or another lol...Armageddon, Interstellar, the list goes on and on ;)

  6. I just started using the Batiste for brunettes but I'm not 100% sold on it yet. I do like putting it on before bed though! And I really want to see The Martian! I don't go to the movies often either but that looks so good! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

  7. I haven't gotten the hang of dry shampoo. I feel like maybe it's just not right for my hair type! I don't know. I'm also glad you reviewed the book vs movie of the Martian! I have been wondering about that. Not that I read the book, and I will probably not watch the movie (I see about 3 per year...usually with kids), but it's a popular pop culture topic and I like to be in the know on these things. Also. LOL'd at your snap about drivers who want you to let them in!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!

  8. YES going to see that movie when we get back.

and the comedian - LOVED it. i love me some standup comedy!

  9. I am so in need of a good dry shampoo. I have never tried!!!

  10. I've heard nothing but amazing things about Batiste, as a fellow brunette I'm going to have to check that out. And I definitely want to get out to see The Martian and The Intern - both look like great movies.

    Happy Friday gurlie <3

  12. Yay i use the blonde Batiste dry shampoo and it's by far my favorite!! Also JB and I have a nice date night planned to go see the Martian!

  13. We've been going back and forth about the Martian, buuuuut guess we have to go see it now! You convinced me. That was easy...

I've been hearing a lot about Batiste lately. I have never ever found a dry shampoo I like, but maybe need to give this one a try? You've convinced me of so many things with this one post! Haha.

  14. I love dry shampoo. Never occurred to me to use it before bed. Thanks, Friend! I want to see The Martian so bad. Hopefully next weekend.

  15. I need to try that dry shampoo! And I've never heard of using it before bed - will have to try that! I didn't know that the movie was a book first, I'm putting it on my reading list right now

  16. Batiste is totally the best dry shampoo. I've tried a million and I keep going back to it. Also, sometimes you can find them for cheaper at TJMaxx.

I really loved The Martian too - but yes, they cut out a lot for the movie. That whole drive to the mav seemed easy in the movie. I guess the crash and sandstorm would have been too much. Happy almost weekend!

  17. My dry shampoo ran out and I keep trying to make do with other things, but I think I've finally given up. Texturizing powder is NOT dry shampoo and no amount of wishful thinking will make it so. Time to buy more. I want to see The Martian! I think I'll drag Ryan to the movie theater this weekend.

  21. I love Batiste dry shampoo, I stocked up on it when I was in London. My friend saw The Martian and said it was excellent! I think I want to read the book before I see the movie. Hope you have a great weekend.

  22. For a long time after the shooting here, I got really upset when I heard about other mass shootings. I don't know at what point that changed, but it has. I have always purposely avoided getting sucked in to the media circus that goes on after things like that, out of respect for the victims and their families and communities because I remember what it was like having cameras in my face and seeing reporters trolling for comments and I just refuse to participate in that (another story for another day, I know). But now it's different, not only do I avoid the news stories, but hearing about them doesn't even make me upset anymore, it makes me feel a different kind of sad. Not just sad that it happened, but sad that it happens OVER and OVER and OVER again and we do NOTHING. Sad because I know it's only a matter of time until the next one. Sad because I know it will continue to happen over and over and over again and we will continue to do nothing. I don't know what the answer is but I do know the statistics about gun control and gun violence in other countries and it seems hard to completely dismiss them.
In other news...Ben keeps trying to get me to go see The Martian. I know you loved the book so I'm glad to know you enjoyed the movie as well! We may have to check it out.

  23. So I bought that exact same dry shampoo from TJ Maxx and it did not work for me!! I wonder if it was old or expired there since it was on sale? I don't know because I usually love the regular Batiste so I'll have to try it from Walgreens or Target instead! Happy Friday!

  24. I'm on vacation in 2 weeks & planning on seeing that movie!
I used to LOVE my George Foreman grill... I think we went through 2 of them because we used them so much.

  25. Thanks for the link, you know I'm on the same page with the gun situation. It horrifies me to think about but I can't live in a bubble and say nothing. Things don't change when we stay silent about things that matter just to avoid conflict with others.

I need to make time to see The Martian. You and Jana both really liked it and I know I will too. I love Matt Damon.

Do you do chicken on the George Foreman? Is it a mess to clean up?

    1. And by "you" I guess I mean does KC do chicken, because I don't think you eat it?

  26. Batiste is my all time holy grail of try shampoos! I love it!!!! And ummm I really want to go see the Martian. I haven't been to a theater in like 6 years. But this makes me want to change that! I have loved my Foreman all through college and now. still works perfect!!! Just hate cleaning the damn thing.

  27. We're trying to make it to The Martian movie this weekend but the timing isn't working out (kiddos!! ugh!! ;)) but hopefully soon! My hubby hasn't read the book (because he really doesn't read ANYTHING) so he is pretty excited to see what I've been hyped up about all year! I really need to get into comedy on Netflix because we love watching it and haven't delved into it much yet on Netflix!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I can't wait to see that movie! and totally agree- that dry shampoo is the best!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I just saw the Martian earlier this week and it was so good. I read the book earlier this year. I need to get my hands on some Batiste dry shampoo.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I always use bastiste too! My favorite is the pretty floral bottle, the smell is the best. I tried the blonde version before and YUCK, it smelled so bad and was straight up yellow. I ended up tossing it, I was so mad! Good to know the brunette one wasn't like that, in case I ever dye my hair brown again :-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't know how I've ever lived without dry shampoo! I haven't tried Batiste, but I've seen that they have some nice smelling stuff. I really want to see The Martian because I've heard so many great reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am def gonna have to check out that batiste dry shampoo. I like the one I use now pretty well buttttt the brunette version of this def has me intrigued! I've kinda been wanting a george foreman but Jared doesn't think we'll use it that much- what all have you been making on it?

  33. We are doing Date Night to see The Martian tonight! I didn't know it was a book - I will need to look for it :) I heart the Batiste for Brunettes, too (it helps with the whole "my hair looks gray from regular dry shampoo" thing). LOL about putting it on before bed - I have noticed that if I do a refresher to go out at night, my hair is AWESOME the next morning - duh! I should always put it on at night! Thanks :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I ran out of Batiste and need to stop fooling myself that there is something better out there. Cheers to the brunettes version! Love your movie review; I haven't been to the movies in ages so if The Martian is worth it, I'm in ;) Happy weekend, gorgeous!

  35. Thanks for sharing Steph's post. She basically took the words right out of my mouth/fingertips, and everyone seriously needs to read it. I never felt afraid before, but I feel afraid all the time now. That's not right. There were two more shootings on campuses this morning. Something needs to change, but I'm heartbroken to say I don't believe it will. Not yet. Not while these cold and heartless and cruel people hold public office.
Anyway. On a lighter note. I am waiting for my friend to finish up reading The Martian so we can go see the movie together and I cannot wait!! It looks so good.

  36. I want to try dry shampoo. I've been curious.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The batiste dry shampoo is my favorite. I've tried so many brands and keep find it to work the best for my hair and I love that the have so many different scents to chose from. I heard the Martian was really good and might go see it tomorrow! Enjoy the weekend!

  39. Thanks for posting that article. It's importnat that we keep discussin the gun laws and expressing our opinions....changes need to happen!

I've heard GREAT things about the Martian! Everyone has enjoyed it! I need to see it soon! Haha and I actually didn't realize it was a book. Oops.

    Happy Weekend, Kristen!

  41. You saw my comment on Steph's post.

My hubs loves Carl Barron. And, I love dry shampoo. And, we plan to have a date night for The Martian also. I'm so glad to hear it was good!

  42. The husband really wants to see The Martian so we might end up going this weekend! I told you I didn't love the book but I think I'll like the movie better because I think it won't be as sciency. Have a great weekend!

  43. I do want to see The Martian...

I've never used dry shampoo. I could wash my hair every day and nothing would change. I shampoo twice a week and condition almost everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I am so glad that you convinced me to read The Martian and I cannot wait at all to see the movie. I was planning on seeing it with my roommate opening day and we had a pet emergency - her cat was diagnosed with diabetes and he crashed and almost died. It was horrible. Thank god, he's okay now.

I read Steph's post and I can honestly say that I pretty much agree with everything.

  45. I love Batiste dry shampoo! I can't wait to see The Martian, but I have to read the book first!

  46. We are going to see The Martian this weekend!!!! I am so freaking excited.

I do not understand guns, either. I have shot before, because I'm required to for training, but I do not enjoy it AT ALL. I hate shooting. I don't understand why we still have these things. Our TV at work in the breakroom is permanently on CNN and it's nonstop. Today, I saw something saying they're going to allow guns on campus in Texas. WTF Texas. It's like if a room in your house was on fire, and you started screaming, "What do I do?? Let's put more fire on it, that will help!"

    ReplyDelete
  47. I always love good Netflix recs! Sounds like it was funny. And we definitely want to see the Martian!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Steph is great at putting thoughts into words that make sense... and are REAL. Love her.
We have a George Forman but we don't use it very often now that Pete doesn't eat meat... I thought about trying to make paninis with it... lol

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm waaaayyyy behind on the George Foreman. I should've bought one forevs ago, but never did. I need to get on that. And seeing the Martian.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well I just learned two damn things so call me stupid... Or call me a boring old lady that never leaves her house. Ha! Thanks for sharing the dry shampoo at night trick and the camel shopping trick! :)

  51. I loved the Martian, I was so excited to see it after I read the book and thought it was so good!

  52. Oh, I want to see The Martian! Hopefully this weekend...

  53. as someone who grew up in a house with guns -- my dad hunts, I realize that some guns have purpose and responsible owners should be allowed to have them. HOWEVER I think it is wayyyy to easy for anyone to get a gun and I am absolutely in favor of MUCH more gun control, gun laws and restrictions. I understand the "right to bear arms" but when you're not responsible you shouldnt have that right! It scared me to live in Chicago where there were countless murders of CHILDREN every week. how is that okay? how are we a country where we say that's sad, but don't take away my freedom? we need to do more and stop letting gun lobbyist and the NRA control the government.

and on another note i really want to try that dry shampoo + see the martian! hope you're having a good weekend. xo

    ReplyDelete
  54. Dry shampoo before bed; good tip! The longest I have gone between washings is 4 days, but I'm ready to up my game!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Ooh your George Foreman is fan-ceee. Ours is definitely a bit more 'vintage'. It's also known as the George Formby in our house. Anyway... Glad you're enjoying it. What do you cook most often in it?

I just saw The Martian yesterday and absolutely loved it! As a botanist by training it made my heart happy :) They could have made it an hour longer and I'd have still been sat there, happy as a clam.

As for the guns thing, I'm with you. I don't understand why anyone needs a gun, to be honest. They absolutely terrify me. Maybe it's just what you're used to - I've never actually seen a real gun and nobody here owns one, unless you're a Lord and you go grouse shooting at weekends on your estate. But I don't know many of those, so. Caring more about guns than people makes my head swim. Why?!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I had been looking forward to seeing the movie ever since finishing the book, and feel like it would be one worth seeing in theaters, but now I feel like we might just end up waiting because the times are either too early and work conflicts or super late :( Totally pointless to your post, but can you tell I'm disappointed, haha. I've never tried the brunette version, but I'm glad you mentioned the color washing out because if I ever do try it, I probably would have freaked out too.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh my goodness. Wasn't the Martian AMAZING? We read the book, too and we were so impressed. It pretty much fit the book exactly, which I appreciate. They left out that one storm, but whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Happy to hear you enjoyed the Martian!! My boyfriend is coming home from China after a long work trip this weekend and we're totally going on a date to see this. Can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  59. We saw the Martian this past week. We loved it!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ohhh, we can watch the Martian at home (don't ask me what we have plugged in to get in-theater releases streaming to our home or how much THAT costs... That's all hubs doing) so good to know it's a good one! I'm also a rarely laugh out loud kinda gal, but did you watch Amy Schumer (or however you spell it) host Saturday Night Live this past weekend?! I only stayed awake for her opening monologue, but I was laughing out loud at how funny she is!

    ReplyDelete
  61. So I've yet to respond to your comment but The Martian, I felt the same way. The ending irked me because the book ending was perfect and the Hollywood treatment was not needed but other than that, I loved the movie. Totally did the book justice. And you know how I feel about the book.

I can't use dry shampoo. I'm pretty sure I use it wrong, if that's possible. But my hair always feels worse when I'm done.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Adding the Dry Shampoo to my list. I have never tried a brunette version so maybe that will win me over....Also has EVERYONE seen The Martian but me??? :( I want to see it so bad but unfortunately my being super picky about who watches my kiddo means that most of the time I don't have a baby sitter. I hope to see it soon!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm like you, I don't like watching the news because it is so depressing!! I can't say I have a huge opinion for or against guns because there are pros and cons on both sides. There was a shooting in a collage in AZ (where I live) last week and it is just SO sad!!! I obviously do NOT agree with that at all. I'll need to check out that article you linked for sure.

  65. I'm totally with you on guns. It freaks me out. I loved The Martian too! I thought it followed the book pretty closely and none of the changes bothered me that much. I've been using brunette Batiste for years and love it so much. I also just recently found out about spraying it in at night. It's a game changer! Haha!

  66. Dry shampoo is a life saver. I have super curly hair that takes me over an hour to straighten and my hair is also super oily. Using dry shampoo keeps my blow outs lasting longer than a day or two

    ReplyDelete
  67. My brother is obsessed with The Martian - Ryan and I are hoping to get to see it in the next couple weeks. Hooray for dry shampoo! I've recently become a lover of the Batiste brand - it is so, so good.

    ReplyDelete
  68. YES TO THE MARTIAN! I read the book and saw the movie and totally agree!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I loved that post from Steph as well. When I read it, I thought, "There are so many things I want to say to this ... And yet, for some reason, I can't think of anything other than YES." I get so ragey about so many issues, and I love when someone writes something that makes me feel like they got into my head and figured out the perfect way to share my thoughts and feelings.

I want to see The Martian, but I think I may just wait for it to come to Netflix. I'm still waiting for the book, and I really wanted to read it first. We don't go to the movies too much anymore either, but we're definitely going to see Crimson Peak soon. I've been looking forward to that one for months, and I've already told Eric he's going whether he wants to or not!

I never use dry shampoo because every time I've tried, it makes my hair look awful. I may try this brand, though, because part of the reason it looks awful is because it leaves little white flecks in my black hair (not a good look!). I'm able to wash my hair every other day without the help of dry shampoo, but I'd love to wash it less since it would keep my color looking more vibrant and save me a shit ton of time!

Oh, and we use a George Foreman grill. We're allowed to have larger grills at our apartment complex, but we're holding out until we buy a house. For now, though, the George Foreman works great. It's kind of a pain to clean, but thankfully Eric always does that! :-)

  70. I've never heard of using the dry shampoo at night. I'll have to try it out! I also recommend applying it before your makeup because if you miss and spray your face, your skin may change colors. Not like I would know or anything! I've heard so many good things about The Martian. Can't wait to see it!
