Apparently, today is the first day of fall. Even though seasons starting on a random date is confusing to me, I can get behind talking about Autumn things. Excited to link up with Pinky and Katie today.
I feel like I'm in the minority in blogland, I'm not super obsessed with all things fall like I feel other people are. I don't like (sweet) pumpkin things, I don't own a vest
But, there is a sweet spot. Where the weather is cool but not cold, where my husband lets me open the doors and windows, where the fashion trends are new and exciting and different, where cold weather comfort food is new and more exciting than a salad, where I don't almost pass out after a hot bath, where I can run in the middle of the day and not worry about dying.
In addition to the above, here are some things I like / am excited about for Autumn:
Soup.
Tomato soup and pumpkin soup are my faves. At home, pumpkin is not something that is ever 'sweet' like pumpkin spice lattes or pumpkin pie, it is always savoury. I have not yet mastered making either soup on my own, but I do want to try. The best part about America loving sweet pumpkin things is that you can get canned pumpkin, so I can hopefully make this super easy recipe without dealing with an actual pumpkin, and alter it to taste like my mum's.
When I was at home, my favourite canned soup was Campbells, but you can't get it here. I've tried other 'pre-made' ones but honestly, the spices and flavouring are different than what I'm after. My favourite tomato soup off the shelf is from TJs, of course.
Other comfort food.
I love a good bowl of soup and some chunky bread (or grilled cheese) to go with it, but my favourite thing about cold weather is alllll of the comfort food.
Butter chickpeas / chicken. I'll eat this year round, but there is no denying it tastes a little bit better when it's cold out.
Mashed potatoes and gravy. I actually do not know how to make mashed potatoes and gravy from scratch, don't judge me. Maybe I will try the below recipe this year.

Miracle Mac n Cheese |

1 Hour Vegan Shepherd's Pie |
and of course, with all that comfort food comes a few extra pounds that can be hidden under chunky sweaters. Also, I love a good scarf and some ankle booties too. I really love olive items, but don't own any anymore.

Things I don't like about Autumn:
Apart from the whole winter is coming.. leaves. Leaves looked so fun and happy in movies but ugh they are such a pain in the butt.
The Australian's expectation of leaves falling:
My reaction when KC says we need to rake leaves again:
Someone please tell me why we bought a house with not one, two or three but four big trees that think it's their job to drop their leaves every-damn-where.
Anyway, I am not against autumn in any way, and I can recognise why so many people love it. I will enjoy it until winter is around the corner, and then I will be counting down the days until summer again. But clearly I like quite a lot about Autumn, so it's not all bad.
What's your favourite thing about Autumn?
What a fun list, lady! I know it's partly my link up, but honestly, I'm like you, not big into pumpkin stuff. Shocking, I KNOW!!!! I do love the fashion, though and need one of everything you posted :)! I love boots and skinnies, they are my favorite fall look. And all of your food is making me super hungry this morning, mac and cheese with soup for breakfast?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for linking up with us :)!
I dont like to eat or drink pumpkin things...i just dont like the taste, but I'll still have at least one PSL to mark the season but that's it! Thankfully we don't have a yard so I can just enjoy all the leaves falling - although that gorilla is pretty excited LOL!! Gimme mac and cheese! :) xo, Biana -BlovedBoston
ReplyDeleteI love your post because it's real! I am normally ready for cooler weather by the time it hits Alabama but it doesn't get cool here till around the end of October beginning of November so my fashion doesn't start changing till then. I do like pumpkin but mostly pumpkin pie and pumpkin creamer for my coffee. It's so funny how different things are compared to your hometown. Welcome to fattening foods, cheese and pasta will change your life ha!
ReplyDeleteLinds @ Not A Mom
i love your reasons for loving autumn! it feels like the briefest season to me. plus my bday is on october, so that makes me a fan right there.
ReplyDeleteThe food is definitely one of my favorite things about fall! I can't wait to make as much of the soups, stews, and chilis as I can! And you're right, there's that perfect time of the year that happens during the fall and during the spring where the weather is perfect and you can actually be outside without freezing to death or dying of heat stroke. Hopefully that weather sticks around for a while this fall!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about autumn is wearing sweaters. I love dark yellows, burnt oranges, and emerald greens. Somehow those colors make clothes seem cozier :D
ReplyDeleteI love leggings and I love plaid. I also love that soup from TJs. I have some in the fridge right now.
ReplyDeleteI have to ask: was it weird having the seasons reverse when you moved here? I mean, I cannot wrap my head around that. It fascinates me.
And you hadn't had Mac and cheese??
Bahahaha. I love your list of comfort foods- I have never had a pumpkin spice latte (pumpkin isn't my thing either) but the fact that mashed potatoes are seasonably appropriate makes me thrilled
ReplyDeleteFall used to be my favorite season but down here I don't really get a fall so... LOL! I do love the cooler temps because it means I'm not melting the second I walk out my door though! Love ALL your comfort foods. And I'm not a pumpkin fan either. There are a few pumpkin beers I like but that's about it!

Sequins & Sea Breezes
YASSSS to soup! Seriously, my favorite food! And come hang with me, I'll teach you how to make some proper 'smashed taters and killer homemade gravy. I use my potatoes as a small vehicle to spoon gravy in my mouth, actually. It's shameful. But I'm pregnant this year, so if anyone judges, they'll have hell to pay! I'm really into the short boot/bootie thing! Tall boots were the look for so long, I'm welcoming the change. Now if only "they" would make pants long enough for me to do the cute roll at the bottom thing, I'd be set. Tall boots were stellar for hiding short pants! #tallgirlprobz
ReplyDeleteIn principle I do really like Autumn, but in practice it's already freezing over here and I'm dreading the onset of winter! We had such a miserable summer that I'm really begrudging the weather getting any worse. That said, an opportunity to stock up on warm layers and comfort eat is very welcome!
ReplyDeleteOk, well now I'm super hungry for soup, mashed potatoes, and mac & cheese. We had the BEST mac & cheese at Doc Crow's while we were in town... and now that's all I want to eat for lunch :( You know, it's not too late to jump on the football obsessed train. You could still get into it!
ReplyDeleteShepard's Pie is my favorite! I feel like everyone disses it but I'm obsessed. I tried a "high end" version last year that was so incredible. Now I'm craving it so I guess I have to make some soon!
ReplyDeleteall of these things except the raking. that's mu husband's job...i mean, isn't that part of why we married them?!
ReplyDeletei love the fall wardrobe - layers and cozy sweaters :)
Yes, yes, yes to all the fall clothes! Honestly it's my favorite season for fashion. And as much as I like pumpkin I can't say I've ever had pumpkin soup, hmmm.
ReplyDeleteMy family's never raked leaves. We just mow them up. So much easier! Thanksgiving is awesome because I get 2 days off work. It used to be awesome because I got delicious food and to see my family, but in recent years those things don't really happen, so now it's mostly just not working. Halloween is much more exciting as an actual holiday, because dressing up is so fun!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Fall isn't the "stuff." It's the temperature and the weather, and cool, windy days that make me feel more alive than I do in the frigid winter or stifling summer. And change is exciting, too, which is why Spring and Fall are way better than Winter or Summer!
Oh, and clothes. I love my fuzzy boots, and my long-sleeved clothing.
DeleteI really love mashed potatoes and gravy -- I mean, looooove. I would not be sad if thanksgiving dinner was just a bunch of mashed potatoes and gravy -- ok enough of that. Looooove the fall outfits -- leggings and boots and sweaters -- woo hoo!
ReplyDeletebahaha the leaves. I don't feel that pain yet, but I am sure I will when I own a house in a few years. :) I love the trees, the food, the weather, and the clothes! I'm not fall obsessed either, but I've recently been trying to embrace every season... (I'm looking at you, Summer...) to enjoy it all more. So fall was my goal last year and it went pretty well. :) XO -Alexandra
ReplyDeleteSimply Alexandra: My Favorite Things
I think my dread with fall is knowing winter follows too! But yesss to all of the boots and sweaters! That vegan shepards pie looks sooo good!
ReplyDeleteOh, hello me drooling at 8:30 in the morning. Soups! I hadn't even thought about soups yet! Time to eat them all since it is "fall" (cough, 90 degrees, cough).
ReplyDeleteI love autumn, we just do not get very much of it in the South. I do not like all the pumpkin spice related things though.
ReplyDeleteI love all things fall... for sure.. & am grateful our trees are spread where leaves just blow freely & we don't have to rake :) on 2 acres, that would really bite!
ReplyDeleteAll this comfy food.... I am now starving!
lol no worries! i'm not a football fan either ---which is pretty much unheard of in the south. but i do love that it's going to be cooler soon and i can finally switch up my clothes. xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteYay for soup & fall comfort foods! I am so excited for fall clothes if it ever cools off :)

What a great list! I'm not really into Football either. I also don't eat Turkey so I'm not crazy about Thanksgiving either. However, I do love sweets!! Great outfits, I love wearing sweaters and scarves!! Oh and I love plaid anything.
ReplyDeleteI'm cautious of fall; it's kind of like Spring, where I love it, but suddenly it's over and the weather is extreme. I love that it's not hot out right now, but I know it's means it's gonna be COLD, and I'm gonna be wrapped like a burrito on the couch. I remember at the beginning of the year being really excited to be able to wear shorts again; now, I'm kinda ready for boots.
ReplyDeleteMmm I love that soup from Trader Joes. So good! I have grown to like fall, but it definitely does remind me that the cold and the horrid snow are both on their way. ugh! I really love my cold weather wardrobe though so that helps me cope. I feel your pain when it comes to raking leaves. We have a bunch of trees too. We waited to rake them last year until we thought all of the leaves had officially fallen off. . . big mistake. It took forever to rake!
ReplyDeleteYes to all of this! Fall is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteI love pumpkin but I've never had pumpkin soup! So I feel like I need to make that recipe ASAP. Fall clothes are the BEST! I do dread the colder weather after Fall (I am so cold-natured it's ridiculous!) but it never really gets that cold here in FL so I can deal with it. Pile on the sweaters and cozy socks!!
ReplyDeleteSo much yummy food inspiration and loving all of your fashion picks! I'm the same way as you when it comes to fall, I was never a fan of it after growing up in CT because it meant winter was coming. I have more of an appreciation for it now living in the south, but I'm still in the minority in blogland so I'll join you in that corner ;-)
ReplyDeleteGreen Fashionista
I like pumpkin stuff, but I prefer caramel stuff WAY more :) :) :) And seriously- I love soup. Last night I was prepping my freezer meal day for next month and you better believe it consists of mostly soups and chili haha!
ReplyDeletehahahah, so funny about the leaves! We used to always rake them growing up and my dad made it so un-fun that leave raking basically evokes ptsd in me, lol. And I love all the things you love about fall as well, for sure. Most especially- soup. I love, love, love soup.
ReplyDeleteI love everything about fall decor and boots!
ReplyDeleteYa pretty sure food is my favorite part of fall! I love all comfort food and soups! I have been pining soup recipes like crazy and of course definitely love the fashion! Give me all the boots!!

Upbeat Soles
I am so not a fan of pumpkin but I do love the cooler weather. No sweating my butt of is always nice. The boots and warm comfy sweater. The energy I have now that the sun isn't beating it out of me, and Halloween!!
ReplyDeleteFall comfort foods are pretty great. I can't wait to make some chili in the crockpot so I can smell it all day.
ReplyDeletexo, Carly | carly blogs
That pumpkin soup looks so good! And mashed potatoes are my fave comfort food!

Southern Style
You're my soul sister solely for the fact that you're also not a fan of football - that is music to my ears! As much as I do love fall around here, I also can't stand the fact that it's now super dark in the mornings, gets dark really early, and the cold, bitter winter is coming. But, I'm trying not to dwell on that. :) PS - that photo of you and your friend is flawless - I seriously need to know your hair tricks.
ReplyDeleteI love shepherd's pie! One of our favorite meals in our house :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I hear you about the leaves lady - we don't even have ONE tree on our property...but end up raking leaves constantly all fall from all our neighbor's damn trees. So annoying! xx
I'm not a huge autumn fan either, I much prefer spring and summer.
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite fall thing is boots, flip flops are my favorite but if I have to wear real shoes I want to wear cute boots.
I'm not excited for fall either, because I never get pumpkin spiced lattes! And I don't know how football works, and I've never celebrated Thanksgiving (though that's going to change this year), so for me fall = cold weather and looooong wait until summer. Comfort foods are the best though, chili is always my go to!
ReplyDeleteWooot!! I am feeling super cool that I made your autumn outfit inspiration list! (And just found a couple of other outfits to pin so thanks for that!) I am also not the #1 fan of fall by any means, but it does have a few redeeming qualities. I will have to try that tomato soup from Trader Joe's- haven't had that yet and it looks good. I also hope to make you a believer in sweet pumpkin things. Have you had the pumpkin bread at Starbucks? It's not too sweet but a good gateway to sweeter pumpkin flavors. :)
ReplyDeleteI love sheppards pie but it always seems wayyyyyyy to hard to make at home. I need to try and make it! I can't wait to wear fall clothes, but I do not want it to be winter cold. I hate winter, hate hate hate it. I love that gorilla meme, so funny!!
ReplyDeleteThose recipes look so dang good. And yes to the clothes although we really can't wear them here because it's always so hot. It doesn't cool down until late Oct/Nov. I hate it!!
ReplyDeleteKeeping it real, my friend. Love it! You always pair such cute mixed patterns with scarves so I know you'll be rocking that look full force again come cooler weather. I do not envy your raking but at least you'll actually see the season changes (our leaves tend to go from alive to dead, no pretty colors hah).
ReplyDeleteI am totally going to have to try that pumpkin soup! We're making Butternut Mac & Cheese tonight for a little fall! It's my first time making it or having butternut squash, so we'll see!!
ReplyDeleteThe stripes! The leggings! The scarves! The boots!! YES. ♥
ReplyDeleteI just pinned that pumpkin recipe and can't wait to try it! And don't worry, I've never made mashed potatoes or gravy either! I hear you on dreading the cold weather coming soon - I do kind of enjoy it through the holidays but after New Years, I am o-v-e-r it!
ReplyDeleteI love that it is cooling down enough to eat soup! I had some clam chowder on a chilly night at a restaurant this weekend, and it felt so cozy! Cracked up so hard about the leaves-not looking forward to that part of owning a house!
ReplyDeleteLove those 3 outfits side by side. Really cute and comfortable. I can't say we even have Fall here but I will indulge in all the pumpkin things!
ReplyDeleteI definitely love making comfort food for the colder months. We also do this thing called "hot pot" where you cook your food in a communal pot on the table top. Isn't unsanitary ;). I'm also not a fan of pumpkin things though I do love making pumpkin pie. I like cozying up in warm clothes. And boots!
ReplyDeleteI am loving all of your fall outfits! Yes, please!!!! I had a PSL yesterday and it isn't near as good as I remember. Boo!!! I am going to have to try that pumpkin soup recipe! I love tomato soup too. And mashed potatoes are so easy girl! You can totally do it!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your style! In August I went shopping for fall clothes, and bought jeans/leggings/chunky sweaters/boots and its been torture to just have them all sitting in my closet waiting for the weather to get cool enough to wear them. I want to try the pumpkin soup recipe...I have never heard of it before, but I love everything pumpkin!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of Thanksgiving or a huge football person either, but I do love the clothes and the food. Yes to soup, grilled cheese, mac and cheese...and more. :)
ReplyDeleteYour "sweet spot" paragraph, yes. That's it. That makes it all worth it. I'm not the hugest fan of Thanksgiving either (it's actually a pretty sore spot the last few years) and the way my football team is looking so far, there's nothing to like about football season either. But as long as I can pretend that winter isn't right behind it (even though I do like the first snow—JUST the first one though, everything else is overkill) fall is such a nice change of pace. And it's so damn pretty, so there's that too :)
ReplyDeleteOh and veg shepherd's pie recipe PLEASE!
DeleteMmmm... soup and crusty bread! So good! I got some soup mix and a french baguette... I think we'll have it for dinner tomorrow night!
ReplyDeleteWhoa, whoa, whoa... you'd never had mac and cheese before coming here?! Girlfriend. You have a lot of making up to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fall clothes are the best clothes. Scarves, boots, sweaters... perfection!
I really love the boots you are wearing in your pic with your bestie. My guy makes the best pumpkin & sweet potato soup. It is so yum! Understandable that Thanksgiving doesn't mean anything to you. For me, it is my most difficult holiday away from home. Because there's no equivalent or comparative holiday. And, for me Thanksgiving = family.
ReplyDeleteFall clothes and food, the best!
ReplyDeleteI love the part of autumn where the weather is still nice but it's actually cool enough to go outside without risking instant sunstroke and the leaves are all pretty in a million different colours. Sadly that part only seems to last about a week then it's all rain and grey skies and cold, and all the leaves are lying on the ground soaking wet waiting to make me slip!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried pumpkin spice anything. The only place here that does it is Starbucks where I never go anyway. Pumpkins are a vegetable in Switzerland (and Germany). In Switzerland autumn seems to be all about chestnuts. There's chestnut yoghurt, chestnut ice cream and chestnut chocolate in the local supermarket!
Oh, and if you can make shepherd's pie then you can definitely make mashed potatoes - that's basically what's on top!
DeleteLove your honesty here and it doesn't have to be everybody's jam which is why some people live in the South when they hate winter *raises hand* So, the fact that we don't have the Campbell's Pumpkin soup is crazy! We need that on the shelves here. I used to never eat sweet pumpkin things, but as an adult my palette has expanded. That Shepherd pie looks delicious and I'm definitely all about the soups in the Fall and Chili!
ReplyDeleteMy tummy is growling after reading this post. So many good fall foods! And that roasted red pepper and tomato soup from TJ's is my favorite too!
ReplyDeleteI love the olive/army fatigue, black combo this year. Also. anything plaid or flannel. Once fall starts, it gives me permission to wear leggings and boots everyday. One of my fall go to meals is a crockpot beef stew, which obviously you wouldn't eat, lol!
ReplyDeleteI love camo/olive in the fall sooo much! I also love crockpot chili and roast beef during the fall months, it just feels so homey.
ReplyDeleteI think I need to give pumpkin soup a try. I like most pumpkin flavored things, sweet or savory.
ReplyDeleteI love pumpkin soup! I posted my recipe about 2 years ago on my blog, and it's soooo delicious; here it is! http://pleasandcarrots.blogspot.com/2013/10/recipe-pumpkin-soup.html I just love ev-er-y-freaking-thing about fall!
ReplyDeleteMy least favorite thing about autumn is definitely the whole freezing-winter-is-coming thing. I am not a fan of cold weather. And I'm always a little sad to see summer go. Fall is great, but it's not exactly beach weather. And this girl loves the beach. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on loving the comfort food and comfy clothes that come with this time of year, though! I vote yes to you sharing your shepherd's pie recipe!
Autumn has actually become my favorite season. But I'm weird too. I dislike most pumpkin things (hell most people wouldn't like it if it wasn't for the spices. Pumpkin itself is bland), don't care about football and not into autumn alcoholic beverages because I can't drink them anyway. But autumn is beautiful and I love the scents and other tastes. I posted my autumn list too and I actually have an autumn baking bucket list too that has like 20 different items I want to try and bake this season and that don't focus on pumpkin :)
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about you can't get Campbells?! Where the hell are you?! Tell me your faves and I will happily send you a whole box!
ReplyDeleteI love every damn thing about fall but I have to say that you hit the nail very much on the head with this list! Tomato soup & grilled cheese is my ULTIMATE jam for the fall. There's just something so comforting about it. Also, I don't cook all that much, or rather I don't cook many things very well, but baked mac and cheese is pretty much my best dish & I love when fall comes around and I can justify heating up the house LOL
ReplyDeleteHell yes to pumpkin soup & chunky sweaters!
ReplyDeleteAs I've gotten older, autumn has definitely become my favorite season. (It used to be winter, but now that I'm an actual adult with a job that requires me to show up even if there's a foot of snow on the ground or ice everywhere, it's not quite as enjoyable.)
ReplyDeleteI love pumpkin in both sweet and savory things, but I know a lot of people who don't like it at all. I love comfort food, though, and macaroni and cheese is one of my absolute favorite things. I try not to make it too often because it's not exactly the healthiest meal, but it's so good!
I totally agree about fall fashion as well. I love layers and cardigans and leggings and boots and ... Well, pretty much everything! I've been struggling lately with the urge to order a million new clothes and shoes online. I'm sure I'll end up ordering a few things, but if I ordered everything I want, I'd probably end up spending at least $5000. And, while I may want to, I definitely can't do that!
P.S. I would love your vegetarian Shepherd's Pie recipe! Eric made a more traditional Shepherd's Pie last year (and it was delicious!), but I'd like to try a vegetarian version as well.
I guess Mac and cheese would seem like a weirdo combo if you didn't grow up with it! Pasta and cheese does sound gross when you put it that way. I don't really eat the kind with the liquid you cheese anymore, but I love homemade mac and cheese. I would love your shepherds pie recipe if you wouldn't mind sending it over!
ReplyDeleteFall clothes really are the best! I think part of it is I'm just so happy to be wearing actual clothes after a summer of feeling like I walked around nearly naked haha.
Well now I'm damn near drooling on my keyboard over here! goodness.... I remember growing up having to rake leaves. That shit is for the birds. Luckily my husband doesn't make me rake leaves at our house in the country. He says let the wind blow them away. Ha! :) My favorite part of fall is the colors on the trees and such :)
ReplyDelete
