So why should books should be one of the 7 deadly sins? Actually, I think the 7 deadly sins should just be renamed 'feelings about books' or 'symptoms of being a book lover'.
Wrath.
wrath
raTH/
noun
- extreme anger (chiefly used for humorous or rhetorical effect).
Greed
greed
ɡrēd/
noun
- intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food.
How it relates to books: Give me all the books, and then give me some more. I have over 200 books on my kindle waiting to be read, and about 100 physical books around the house that also need to be read, but if I go into a bookstore / goodreads / amazon, suddenly I need all the books.
Sloth
Sloth
sloth
slôTH,slōTH/
noun
- reluctance to work or make an effort; laziness.
How it relates to books: Any book lover knows what it's like to 'waste' a day (or five) away by reading, but it's not wasted is it? Course not. Also, choosing reading over doing something productive (but reading is productive! Right?) could be considered sloth like as well.
Pride
pride
prīd/
noun
- a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.
How it relates to books: Us book lovers are proud to be so, am I right? It is the reason we recommend books, defend them and choose them.
lust
ləst/
noun
- very strong sexual desire.
How it relates to books: 50 Shades is popular for a reason, just saying.
Envy
en·vy
ˈenvē/
noun
- a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck.
How it relates to books: Envious of a character's life, chances and choices, or envious of the fact that someone else was approved / sent an ARC that you were denied.. envious of other people's fancy bookshelves, sigh. and yes, this includes the Beauty & the Beast library.
Gluttony
glut·ton·y
ˈɡlətnē/
noun
- habitual greed or excess in eating.
How it relates to books: Actually, this might be the only one I can't justify because there is no such thing as an excess when it comes to reading! Like too many books is a thing?! I don't think so.
ps. this post is a joke. If you are religious, I do apologise if it offends you.
Okay, so am I alone here or do other book lovers feel the same?
hahah this is so awesome. i absolutely HATE it when a book has a shit ending and i feel like i've been ripped off. shit endings or endings that just end so fast you go back and look at the page numbers because you think that maybe some of the pages fell out only to realize the author just said "fuck this" and stopped typing #rage.
ReplyDeleteThis is so perfect. I've been in a book fog all week and justify the laziness with at least I'm working my brain. Also, The Martian - read it if you haven't already. It's great and I'm depressed it's over.
ReplyDeletexo, Carly - soak and simmer
Ha, I love all of these! Especially the first one plus gif that goes with it. So much wrath over books with bad endings!
ReplyDeleteThis is great, I'm with you on Greed and Sloth but my envy is different. I also envy someone reading a book I love for the first time. I want to read it again for the first time too!
ReplyDeleteHahah, so on point! Oh wow, I definitely thought reading was more wholesome but how wrong was I. This post is awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun idea!!!!! I'm def greedy when it comes to books!!!
ReplyDeleteHaha YES, definitely greed! I've been ordering library books nonstop and I keep wanting to get more. Sloth is a big one too, just because a whole day can go by in an instant if I'm caught up with a page turner. Looks like books bring out the worst in us :P
ReplyDeletePERFECT!!! ... & yep, I lust & envy over Belle's library. Who wouldn't?!?!!?
ReplyDeleteSo the only time book gluttony becomes a problem for me is when all the books I've put on hold come in at the same time and while I sit and count the books like Scrooge McDuck counts his money, I do get a little overwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteThis post is so awesome. I love all your books posts. Write more, pleaseandthankyou.
Hahaha this is hilarious! I totally have the book greed...give me more words!!!! :D
ReplyDeleteThis post. Is everything!!!!!!!!! You're amazing. Ha!
ReplyDeleteThat gif of the book flying out the window....YES!!!! I have wanted to do that to many a book and tv show!!! And you are so right, no matter how many unread books I have....in the words of Aerial....I WANT MORE!!!! Now if you will excuse me, I am sure I have more books to add to my to read list :)
ReplyDeleteYes to all. Especially Wrath. People never understand why I have SUCH strong feelings about things that have happened in a book I'm reading. I wish I could do the Vulcan mind-meld with them.
ReplyDeleteMy feelings for books are strong. Like super human strong. All of these apply.
ReplyDeletehahaha i love this! i especially relate to sloth when it comes to reading. i'll start reading a book and hours will go by before i realize i haven't left the couch all afternoon!
ReplyDeletelove this!! I can totally relate.
ReplyDeleteOh man do I love this post! I'm big on the Greed one. I'm a major hoarder of books. Books I always intend to read but when it comes time for a new one, I'm "not in the mood for that". It's a vicious cycle. I just picked up 3 books from the library last night and have 4 on my night table I'm working my way through.
ReplyDeleteEvery single one of these is spot on! Book lovers unite ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is AMAZING! I just want to tell everyone to come read this post. Best post idea ever!!
ReplyDeleteThese are some mighty appropriate gifs you've used. I love how Belle is even wearing a green dress for "envy." Mine would be sloth and pride. Books are my form of escapism when I don't want to adult anymore, and I'm definitely proud of some of my newly acquired knowledge. Not that I would use it to show off or anything. No, no...
ReplyDeleteHeheh yes to all of this!!!! Yes, that library. Yes, that silver linings GIF. Yes to it all. Goodreads is so dangerous. bahah :) People keep asking for book recommendations on FB so I'll leave a few and then just gush about goodreads and I think it freaks them out a little. LOL XO -Alexandra
ReplyDeleteSimply Alexandra: My Favorite Things
This is amazing. So much wrath toward Allegiant...lol
ReplyDeleteSuch a great post! I love all the Gifs to go along with each sin!
ReplyDeleteI agree with all these! Especially the first one... there's nothing worse than a terrible ending to a story you were enjoying so much.
ReplyDeleteThis is hilarious!! and so true!
ReplyDeleteLOL, I hope no one is offended by this! Once again, I'm amazed at your creativity! I'm impressed with your tally for the year! Even on your slow months you still read about 10 more books than me. :)
ReplyDeleteYes to all of these! Especially to wrath, greed, and envy! I don't think I've ever been so angry than when I read Allegiant! And I always have a ton of to be read books on my nook and lying around the house. My thought process is that if I don't buy them now I might not remember what it was. And of course, I think everybody wanted Belle's library! #lifegoals, right?
ReplyDeletehahah I seriously love your list. And totally agree with everything (ahem...still angry over allegiant) and now I have to go read to catch up to your 111 books! - Svetlana @Life with a Side of Wine
ReplyDeleteAllegiant's ending was horrible!! I was so mad at it haha
ReplyDeleteYES!!!!!!! This was so true to my life haha
ReplyDeleteLOL this is amazing! And that library in Beast's castle is a total dream come true - except I'm scared of heights and I'd be too scared to check out the books up really high :-P
ReplyDeletehaha these are so true! I am the same way about having a 100 books that need to be read, but if I go into a store I need them all. Especially a used book store, I don't know why books appeal to me so much more if they are second hand, but I prefer them over a crisp, new one any day! Is this weird?
ReplyDeletere: sloth, does the time I was in college and a book I'd been waiting for came out during the week before exams and I skipped all my classes that day and only left my house to buy the book and then came home and read it straight through count? And also does pretty much every time a Jodi Picoult book comes out and I don't stop reading it until I've finished it count? Because yeah.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I've had the most serious crushes of my life on fictional characters. (MARCUS FLUTIE FOREVER<3) (And also MICHAEL FROM FOREVER FOREVER<3)
Perfect post. Perfect. Perfect. Perfect. I have nothing to add because it is perfect.
ReplyDeleteLOL on your PS! I don't find reading lazy at all! It's my treat for doing all the dishes, cleaning up the kitchen, and whatever chore I have to do to keep the house running.
ReplyDeleteOMG yes to all of this. I totally have an overabundance of books downloaded I haven't gotten to, over 500 on my TBR list, and 50+ physical books i just got from Kate. There is never enough time to read and I get all the feels from books. I thought I was doing good with 73 books for they year, I am having some envy.
ReplyDeletehaha I love this. and yesss I hate books with crappy endings! that goes for anything though... tv shows, movies... anything with a shitty ending makes Jessica very unhappy!
ReplyDeleteJessica | Pyreflies.org
Haha I kept laughing while I read through this post because I could relate to everything. And the Bradley Cooper gif from Silver Linings Playbook is perfect ... I always think of that scene when I read something that ends in a particularly shitty way.
ReplyDeleteI definitely feel the same. And all the gifs are awesome.
ReplyDeleteI'm so with you on this! Especially the sloth part - spending a whole day reading is productive, contrary to what anyone else might say. I refuse to ever apologize for that.
ReplyDeleteHA! This is hilarious! So much truth!
ReplyDeleteYou read so many books this summer-- so amazing! Yess to this entire post-- specifically greed. Sometimes I'm like why do I constantly want more, when I have so many to read? It's so hard for me to fathom that some people don't own/like books, or will only buy like one at a time or something crazy like that! haha
