Why Blogging is AMAZING + Australian Goodies

Hey y'all. Yep I went there.

KC's birthday is coming up, so my mum sent him some Australian t-shirts. I got the package last week and there was no food for me like wtf mum? I was pissed. What kind of mother of an expat does that? Just kidding mum love you bunches but next time send me food.

I was seriously about to order food from some sketchy website when I got another surprise in the post.

I recognised our post symbol immediately. I thought yay, mum surprised me!

Nope. But someone did. Erin. Erin, my new bestie. Erin who understands my expat troubles.

I might have squealed when I saw it. Erin and I have chatted about care packages before, and I might have started one for her, but because she went home (semi) recently, I wanted to wait until she was really missing home (that sounds horrible, doesn't it?) and my care package would make her as happy as hers made mine. She's right, there needs to be more care packages in the world!

Wanna see what I got? Of course you do.

First off, a copy of this book I've never heard of.

Then this absolutely adorable water bottle. I guess it's a bit obvious I have a thing for cats?

These super cool glasses I am totally going to rock all the time next Australia day even though it will be ridiculously cold.

Now, for the most important part. THE FOOD.

Anzac bikkies. Biscuits. Not like your biscuits. I might have to save these for April next year but I don't think they will last that long.

WAGON WHEELS. So I know you all have a song and all, and while I now know that song and sing along, before I moved to the US the only Wagon Wheel I knew were these pretty little babies. Chocolate, marshmallow and jam. YUM. GET IN MY BELLEH. ps. these are also what we call biscuits.

MINTIES. Y'all. I hate mint. yuck yuck yuck. I don't like anything mint flavoured and I only chew gum for like 1 minute and then throw it out once it's done it's job. But minties? Minties are a must and for some reason I LOVE them. Minties are, well, mint, but they are hard as a rock and can take a tooth with them if you're not careful. But they are fabulous.

ALLEN'S LOLLIES. I'm sorry for all the caps but Allen's are my favourite lollies (candy) of all time. I tried very hard not to eat all of these within 2 hours of receiving the care package, I cannot say whether I was successful or not.

Two of my favourite things are pineapples and race cars. They stopped making the race cars for a large chunk of my adolescence but they brought them back when I was older. My boss asked for one of my lollies and she wanted to try the pineapple. She asked what it tasted like and I was like 'I don't know, it tastes like a pineapple but not pineapple it just tastes like an Allen's pineapple'. It's hard to explain. She had one, screwed her nose up and said 'that doesn't taste like a pineapple' and I had one and said 'tastes like my childhood'.

The funny thing is, if I lived at home, it's not like I would be eating these things every day or even every week. But when you can't get things that used to be everywhere and used to be so accessible to you.. It's hard. It's stupid, but it's still hard. Erin understands and she sends me this massive (expensive!) care package and I honestly couldn't be happier or thankful if I tried.

Thank you Erin. You are amazing.

Speaking of amazing, blogging is amazing. In my opinion. I might never be a big blogger and I am totally okay with that, because as cliche as it sounds, this community is the bomb and I am happy and thankful to be in it, surrounded by all you awesome ladies.

That's all. Thanks for letting me yabber on as usual! Hope you have a fabulous Monday.

  7. That's so nice of her. I love blogging and really don't care if I get big or not. I love the blogs I read and the people I comment back and forth with. Its really the best. Which reminds me I was in your town on Saturday. I met up with a childhood friend then my sister and I toured Waverly Hills. Saving that post for closer to Halloween though.

  9. What a sweet package to get! I've tried a few Australian foods before and I have to say Tim Tams are by far my favorite. I also made meat pies before and was surprised how much I loved them. Have a great week :)

  10. That's so sweet! What an awesome surprise. I got an email from World Market this morning saying Australian foods were on sale this week or maybe just today, and thought of you. Do you have a World Market where you live? I kind of love it. ;) XO-Alexandra

  13. It's the best thing ever finally getting your hands on the food that you can't normally get. Blogging turned out to be so much more than I expected it to be, I never thought that you could meet so many awesome people!

  14. I'm trying to think about what US crap I would want sent to me if I were living overseas... And I literally can't think of anything! I think junk food is nasty, especially our chemical-ridden stuff. But I would want someone to send me some Texas beef. European beef is garbage, and it's seriously so good here in Texas, it keeps me from being a legit vegetarian! But I'm so glad you got some yummy snacks (I'm SURE they're much better than what we sell there!) and got a piece of home sent to you!

  20. Yay for care packages!!!! I sort of understand how you feel, while Pittsburgh isn't as far away as say Australia....my mom always brings me food back when she visits our family up there! Stuff that you cant find down here.

  21. More care packages in the world ! All the yes !!

  23. This is so sweet! What an awesome package. I hope you enjoy that book - I've heard good things about it. ;) Seriously, though - I feel the same way about blogging. I feel like lately everybody is trying to make it big, but I'm still just sticking with it because it's what I enjoy to do and it's a great creative outlet. Maybe that makes me behind in the game, but if it stops being fun, what's the point?! Okay, end rant. Bottom line: this was such a sweet package and gesture!

  24. I loved the lollies! My favorite was the snakes. I remember when my co-worker first offered me lollies I thought she meant like suckers (lolly pop). They are so good, now I want some lollies!

  28. That is so adorable and sweet! Also am I alone in the fact that foreign candies are fascinating? Every time I travel I wanna stop at grocery stores just to see the foreign snack foods....

  32. Erin is the best. I love that she did that for you.

My husband managed to score my favorite candy, Coffee Crisps which are Canadian and almost impossible to find in the US (I am not Canadian but my grandparents were which is how I was introduced to this chocolatey goodness). I rationed the shit out of them.

  33. Aww this is so sweet of her! I can totally understand it being hard to not have access to the things you grew up with, it's so awesome that she sent you a little piece of home! Blogging buddies are seriously the best!

  36. What a sweet gift from Erin! I love the water bottle...I get the same cravings for food and candy from back home. Luckily there's a Caribbean restaurant nearby by that I can get home cooked lunch and some of the drinks from back home but it's still not the same. I usually stock up when I got visit.

  37. That is legitimately one of the sweetest things ever! Too cute AND so very thoughtful. For the record I think its great you're saving things for her for when she is truly missing home!

  38. Care packages are the best, and this one is awesome. So so thoughtful! Now I need to find a blogger in my hometown or state because I would love some treats from up north... Even though I visit twice or more a year, ha!

  39. Awww!! That's amazing!! I love blogging and bloggers and blogger buddies and mail and packages and cards and all the love we have going on here. How sweet of her!! So glad you got a little taste of home delivered to you here in the US :)

  40. Love it! I forgot about pineapples. And I'm still giggling over the teeth. Australia has the best lollies.

  41. What an awesome box and so many goodies from home. I bet it really made you day! Erin is awesome for sending it to you!

  42. I studied abroad in Australia and I miss a lot of the food (okay, the sweets)! I used to get the Cadbury buttons (the little round chocolates filled with caramel...not sure if they're actually called buttons) and I could cry over not having had them since 2012. And they're expensive on Amazon. Thankfully I've found Tim Tams here, but oh my gosh Anzac cookies (okay I should say biscuits) are SO GOOD. My friend and I bought one of the HUGE Woolworth's containers and may or may not have eaten them all in one day.

    That's so sweet of Erin!

  43. I totally agree, Kristen. This community is amazing. It has been so great to be part of. Sounds like you have a great friend in Erin! More care packages should be everyone's mantra.

  44. Those goodies are amazing! Yay, Erin! We need to see a photo of you in those glasses. ;) Those race cars and pineapple gummies look tasty!

  45. I didn't know you hated mint! Thank goodness you like minties!! And, I knew you said you weren't overly "keen" (yep, I said keen) on tim tams or choc stuff in general. Now, I feel like I should've sent even more Allen's lollies :) And, how good are wagon wheels?!

Care packages are the best things ever!! I'm so glad you liked yours :)

  47. Oh WOW! That care package looks amazing. Good on Erin! I think I take for granted being able to get hold of all the sweets and chocolate I know and love, and I'd be really quite sad if I weren't able to any more! I know my sister is over the moon that they've just started selling Party Rings (British biscuit, v v tasty) in Australia, and is buying them in bulk...! It's funny how tastes can just transport you back home, isn't it?

  48. Those wagon wheels look very good! What is your favorite American candy?

I prefer bloggers such as you, who aren't too "big for their britches" and still have a lot of personality. Some of the bigger bloggers have no personality anymore - *everything* they do is sponsored and full of advertising.

  49. That is such an amazing care package - how sweet of Erin! I love how candy (and really, all food) can bring back such good memories!

  50. What a wonderful care package!! I love getting care packages. My friend just sent me some candy from London and i was in heaven. Personally, I think the candy overseas is much better than American candy. Enjoy your goodies.

    ReplyDelete
  51. what? no tim tams? ;) one of my fave things about traveling is trying the candy and treats of that place. everyone thought i was weird for buying and taking pics of it all. but this stuff looks AMAZINGGGGG

  52. So many fun goodies! That water bottle is so adorable! I love anything with cats. lol!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yess, care packages are the best! And I'm totally with you - if I was in England I wouldn't be eating junk food all the time, but because I can't have it it's all I want!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Awww, what lovely thing for Erin to do! The cat travel mug is adorable!!! And you are so right, when those things (junk food or other simple pleasures) aren't around, you sure miss them. When I lived in Taiwan for 2 years, all I wanted was a stinkin' cheeseburger. Me and Tony Stark are like peas in a pod ;).

    ReplyDelete
  55. We have a song about Wagon Wheels?? I guess I will have to google it because I'm unfamiliar with it. Maybe it's a Kentucky thing!! Either way those look delish and you are so lucky to have such a great blogger friend to send you that package. The community really is the best!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have heard about hose Wagon Wheels! I love trying different country-specific foods :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. That's so awesome! Even though I can go home I still feel this way about things I grew up with: Charles Chips, Spiedie sauce, pumpkin delights... and certain places too. There's nothing like home.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Aww this is so sweet of her. I was born and raised in NY but still get super excited when I see a candy from my childhood because of the memories. So I can only imagine how awesome this was.

  59. aw this is so sweet! I got that once I got to my door and saw a package and I was like 'aww mom' but no it was a girlfriend who had organised a group package from a bunch of girlfriends, so nice! And I'm the same, the stuff I get in care package I might not think about twice about eating it at home, but here it just feels right!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Awesome care package! There are just some things from home that you end up missing no matter what. Sights, smells, and especially food!

    ReplyDelete
  61. YES! Blogging is awesome for this reason! The community is so wonderful. :) This is such a great care package! What a good friend! :)

  62. This is awesome!

I live about 1000+ miles from where I grew up, and I still sometimes miss random restaurants or other places. When I visit, I usually request to visit at least one (or more), but, like you said, if I lived there I probably wouldn't even go that often. Obviously I'm not as far from home as you are (not even close!), but I do understand how very specific things can remind you of your childhood (or, more simply, HOME).

  63. That's one heck of a care package. Erin is a sweetie!

  64. When we say the best food for cats, it need not be expensive. The top cat food brand is purrfectcatdiet.com, they best for their nutritional content value and the by- products used in them. Most of us believe that the products manufactured by huge companies are healthy and worth paying for. But the truth is different. Pet foods made by companies that specialize in pet foods are the brands one should consider.
