How Beauty & the Beast and Pride & Prejudice are basically the same.

Whenever people tell me they don't want to / can't read or watch Pride & Prejudice, I just tell them - don't worry, you already know the story. Not only have direct adaptions been done, like Bridget Jones, Bride & Prejudice and You've Got Mail (yes, really), but you could pretty much apply it to any boy meets girl story. Don't believe me?

There's a girl.

They both like to read, coincidence?

There's a guy.

They are kind of rude / hostile / awkward when they first meet.

The boy lacks certain social graces.

Before we get too far, there's another boy. He's not the nicest, and he screws things up.

oh my gosh, they are basically wearing the same thing.

There are also silly girls.

The girl and guy are thrown together under circumstances out of their control okay the beast holds Belle hostage whatever. There are some shall we say interesting moments.

There's a lot of eyes going on in both stories.

Hands and touching play a big deal in both.. in one, he's all like 'she's touching me and not repulsed!' and in the other 'he's touching me but he hates me and this is like olden days where touching is like way more than it is these days so woah it's a big deal'.

There's some good ol' fashion dancing.

and I'm pretty sure this is the same balcony.

The conflicts are overcome...

and everyone lives happily ever after!

Ah, happy endings.

Moral of the stories?

Preach, Charlotte.

No wonder these are two of my favourite movies, right? Happy Friday. I think I know what I'm watching tonight - how about you?

  6. You just combined two of my favorite movies into the best post ever! I've loved Elizabeth and Belle for so long and I was going to name a daughter Elizabeth until I found out how many Elizabeth's are already in my husband's family. Maybe I could just use Belle instead :)

  27. Sweet cracker sandwich - when I saw on an earlier post that you received a P&P book and you had commented that you hadn't read it or heard of it or something ... well, I'm new to your blog and didn't know if I could continue following you at that point. I'm SO glad I didn't unfollow you! :) And for you to pick these two stories, which are obviously complete parallels ... you are awesome! I will also be re-watching P&P (this version, of course) this weekend. Thank you thank you thank you! :)

  29. Ok ok ok ok all of your other P& P stuff I was like yeah yeah yeah whatever Kristen it's lame but I am not going to tell you that because I love you. But then you were all holy shit it's Beauty and the Beast and well that is my favorite beyond favorite movie of all time. So now I think I might actually give it a chance, and mean it when I say it this time!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Now, if only the point could be made in such an easy to understand way, maybe I could have finished P&P. (Again, I don't think I'm smart enough to read it).

    ReplyDelete
  31. Haha! I can totally see the similarities. So smart! Love the connection.

  32. So many modern stories pull their plots or at least parts of them from ages-old stories and plays! Disney does this a LOT. The Lion King, for example, follows the same plot as Hamlet, the play by William Shakespeare.
Fun fact: Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie <3

  33. Love this! I never thought about how similar the movies are, but you are so right :)
