Versailles Recap

If you would like to see all my travel posts, including recaps, tips & recommendations and packing guides, please visit my travel page.

I had planned to recap Paris and Versailles together, but honestly Versailles deserves it's own post.

During a recent trip to Paris, we went to Versailles - highly recommend!

One of the days we were in Paris was a dedicated Versailles day. We did a bike tour with Fat Tire Bike Tours and I cannot recommend them highly enough. They are not paying me (obviously) and they have no idea who I am, but seriously. Highly recommend. Our tour guide was Mark (from Ireland) who was super friendly, polite, patient and informative. The tour was fun and I learned a lot, and got a good workout - seriously, it's not for the faint of heart. You ride on a few roads and up (and down) some hills and over tree roots and stuff. It was fun and KC and I were fine, but there were definitely people in our group that weren't having the best time, bike wise.

Versailles is absolutely beautiful. Full of history. I think it deserves a full day so that you can see the gardens and other buildings, which were my favourite part.

I'm just going to go ahead and let the pictures do the talking - there is a ton of information on the interwebs about Versailles if you are interested, I couldn't do it justice. Versailles was probably the best part of the trip for me, I have no idea why, I just absolutely loved it and had been looking forward to it for ages. I highly, highly, highly recommend a visit.

Most people think of the Chateau when they think of Versailles, which is totally fine, but I was not a huge fan. It was so crowded and you can hardly see anything, kind of like The Vatican. It's definitely worth it, but if you are going and you have the time I highly recommend you include the gardens and grounds. They are the true stars and deserve the majority of your time. So many people just go to the Chateau, so the grounds are fairly empty. Of course, I recommend Fat Tire Bike Tours because I am 100% convinced it wouldn't have been the same if we'd done it on our own, our guide (Mark) was fabulous.

Have you been to Versailles, or is it on your list?

  1. I am SO jealous! I wanted to go to Versailles when I went to Paris but we just didn't have time. It looks so absolutely amazing that now I know I need to go back immediately and see it! Ugh and those meats and cheeses on the lawn. Yes please!

  5. Do people live in those cottages around the vegetable gardens?!?!!? They look like something out of a fairy tale!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. So beautiful! The cottages in the gardens look straight out of the 18th century! I bet walking around the gardens and grounds you felt transported back to another world!

  7. that little house with the garden out front -- does someone actually live there? BECAUSE THAT HOUSE IS SO AMAZING AND ADORABLE!!

aren't the frescos in the buildings so breathtaking? one of the things i loved about italy and france! i bet most of europe's historical buildings are like that as well.

  8. I can't deal with the amazingness of the pictures. I need to go! =)

  9. I've never been here but it is absolutely on my list now! I love that y'all did a bike tour! That was probably the best way to go and it looked like a lot of fun!

  10. YASSSSSS to the grounds! I'll go a step further than you and say you could even skip the Chateau. It's "meh" in my opinion, but the crowds, lack of AC, and nonstop gaudiness of the place make it completely mediocre. The grounds on the other hand? I could have spent two days wandering around them! Your pics make me miss my living in Paris days. And I never thought I'd ever say that!

  11. i've never been there on any trip to paris--it's never worked out. i've got to go there!!! your pics were so great. wanderlust fever over here.

  13. We went in high school, but only toured The Chateau! Wanh wanh, school tours fail. Definitely on my list to go back!

Ummm, so when are you doing a hair tutorial? Please and thank you ;)

  14. I'm so glad you got the day you wanted at Versailles! I know what you mean about the chateau itself being over crowded which is why I was happy we spent the majority of our time touring the grounds! Beautiful pictures!! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  15. I would absolutely love to go there! Your pictures are so great. I probably would have been one of the people not having the best time on the bike although it sounds like a blast!

  16. Oh I LOVE Versailles. Taking a paddleboat out on the water was one of my favorite parts of the day. When the weather is nice, nothing can beat those grounds.

  17. Absolutely beautiful pictures! I so want to visit there one day. You have me wanting to back to Paris asap.

  19. My favorite part was Marie Antoinette's area (spacing on the name here). Loved Versailles! We took a break near the canal and I totally fell asleep I was so tired from all the walking (and being 8 weeks preggers lol). I agree with you on the Chateau though - the gardens and grounds are where it's at!

  21. ohhh i loveeed versailles but next time i go im determined to do the bike tour! it looks like so much fun and i'll finally be able to see the little farm! add "To Dance with Kings" to your reading list its such a good romance novel that takes place at versailles (i actually read it in high school for my french class). xo jillian - cornflake dreams

  22. Versailles is definitely on my list. Is it bad that every time I think of Versailles I automatically think of "The Girl in the Fireplace" DW episode?!

  23. WOW - simply stunning photos! I went to Versailles when I was 14 so I barely remember the grounds, but your photos make me want to plan a return trip!

  24. I didn't get to Versailles when I was in Paris and I really regret it. Bike and walking tours equal more pastries/wine/bread etc so I always go with those! It's good to know that there's a lot to see outside the Chateau!

  25. Beautiful! I went to Versailles on my trip years ago but didn't do a bike tour, that sounds like so much fun!

  26. omg, give me this day!!! That looks incredible!! From the bike ride to the scenery to your big smiles- looks perfect. Why do Europeans do life so much better?!? Seriously. They have it figured out. Keep these posts coming! I can never get enough.

  27. It looks amazing - just by your pics I can tell I'd want to dash in and see the Hall of Mirrors then spend my rest of the time on the grounds.

The Bike Ride looks like a great way to see so much. I had to laugh at "there were definitely people in our group that weren't having the best time, bike wise" because THAT WOULD BE ME. And MFD would be riding to the front then circling back to check on me like one of the Wicked Witche's flying monkeys.

  28. Stunning pictures! What a gorgeous place, and you were there on a beautiful day too! I love that you get to do a bike ride, I had no idea. So cool!

  29. YES YES YES. I love Versailles. I also think the town of Versailles should not be missed. It's so, so picturesque. Definitely one of the highlights of when I was in France!!

  30. Look at how cute you are in all of these pictures!! Versailles looks amazing too. I've been to Paris a whopping six times and now I'm kicking myself for never making the short trip to Versailles because who knows when I'll be back. The bike tour sounds awesome. I'd probably have to get in shape. Although, last time I'm pretty sure I sucked so bad at biking because my tires were flat. I was a grumpy cyclist! I'm like you and would probably avoid the crowds for the most part and explore the grounds. I like my space! It looks so beautiful and I love the old buildings.

  31. I love Versailles! Like you, it was even better than I expected! That tour looks like so much fun! I'm totally craving a picnic with yummy European food. :) PS-I love your purple nail polish color! What's the brand? :)

  32. *Sigh* I love Versailles. I missed it the first time I went to Paris but definitely made it a priority the 2nd time!

  33. Wow! What a beautiful place! Looks like you got great weather and a little picnic would be the perfect little rest break!

  34. Absolutely LOVELY!!! Makes me want to go back someday for sure!

  35. I loved Versailles but I didn't see nearly as much as you did. We just saw the stuff in and around the Palace. But it's so beautiful. The weather you had looked amazing, too!

And I don't know why but the first part of your post sounds like the beginning of a joke: an Australian, an American, and an Irishman go on a bike ride in France...

    I have problems. I know.

  36. It looks beautiful there! I can't wait to travel!

  37. Versailles is definitely on my list and can I just say that I crack up the way you describe things? I love it so much! "There were definitely people in our group that weren't having the best time, bike wise." Bwahahaha! When I make it to Paris I am definitely taking this tour. I am LOVING your travel guides. Please keep them coming!

  40. Oh wow, this place is beyond stunning. The gardens would be my favorite part too :) I never would have thought to put this on an international travel bucket list, but I would now. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful photos!

  42. This place was never on my radar but omg those houses!!!! I would move in to any single one of those houses! So gorgeous!!! And the bike tour sounds like so much fun. I think you can really get to see the city more on foot or bike than in a car, so I could totally see why you enjoyed it so much. Plus you are adorbs on that bike!

  43. I can't even imagine how beautiful everything is in person! It looks like a dream and so fun to do a bike tour, it looks like the perfect place for one. I think I would definitely choose Versailles over Paris if I could only see one place, which is weird for me because I'm usually a city person, but this between the gardens and architecture-- *swoon*!

  44. I love the paintings on the ceilings, they look amazing! and those houses are adorable. I would love to have my home look like one of those ;)

  45. You are correct about the grounds and the gardens. I loved the Chateau, but the rest of it made it truly special. There is a bike tour company here (Bonza Bike Tours), and a girlfriend and I went on it when she visited. It was fantastic. I highly recommend.

  46. I am so glad that you decided to do a separate Versailles post. Whenever I visit Paris I will go sure I go to Versailles. Beautiful pictures as always.

  47. What a gorgeous place! I have heard stories about people seeing Marie Antoinette's ghost.

  48. I really really really really REALLY wanna visit Versailles. It looks gorgeous. I also want to live in a house like the ones in photos 6-19 lol. Cute French cottage? Sign me up.

  49. I did the fat tire bike tour there with my family years ago (ok like six) and I still talk about it! It is one of my top travel experiences hands down!

  50. The bike tour sounds like so much fun! I want to do one when we go to San Francisco (although I'll probably be struggling like those people in your group haha). Loving these recaps. Can you just be a professional international traveler now so we get to see all the pretty pictures?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Versailles seriously looks like a dream - it's on my list of must-see places in the world! I love that you chose to do a bike tour, I bet that made the experience that much more memorable! The grounds and gardens look so breathtaking, it's hard to believe that some people don't even take the time to see all of it.

  53. OOOhh looove!! So gorgeous! :) This looks really really beautiful, and like you guys had the best time. I have never considered doing a bike tour on a trip, but it seems like you had a great time... so I may have to consider it in the future. Plus it is probably a nice break from walking everywhere. Different pressure on your feet at least! XO - Alexandra

  54. I love the idea of the bike tour. A workout and lots of places to see makes you feel less guilty for indulging in some of the local treats. The houses look amazing. When can i move in?!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Stunning pictures! Versailles was an optional tour on our trip, but we decided to spend the day at the Louvre instead. If we had at least one more day in the area, I think we would have chosen to go to Versailles. I hope to go back again at some point, and this will definitely be on our list of things to do!

  56. Okay, now I'm determined to go there. Those houses/buildings are what I want to see the most, they look like they must have such great stories behind them. I think I'd like that part more than the Chateau!
