Sunday Sweats Vol 1

I knew it was only a matter of time before I followed in Tracy, Alyssa and Jenn's footsteps. Don't judge me. Also, don't feel like you need to read these (permission to hit red X granted) because these are mainly for me and people who like reading about other people's workouts. It's okay if you aren't one of them!

Monday: 2 mile treadmill run (10:00 p/m) + yoga (15 mins)
Still taking it slow with my new shoes. Yoga for Hangovers when I got home, I didn't have a hangover but I wanted to give it a whirl; plus if one day I do have a hangover, I want to already know the video. If that makes sense. It probably doesn't. But whatever. I cannot imagine doing that video whilst hungover, I could barely do some of the poses as it were. But, the poses were those that I could just feel the improvement a few practices away. Not unattainable, if that makes sense.

Tuesday: lower body strength workout (30 mins) + yoga (15 mins)
It's been awhile since I've done a strength workout, but I worked hard. Squats, pliĆ© squats, deadlifts, lunges. I normally like to stick to the big 3, but I threw some pliĆ© squats in there because I like the inner thigh burn. That sounds odd, I know. Did a bit of yoga / stretching at the gym hoping it would help alleviate the dreaded 'leg day' soreness tomorrow.

Was planning on doing my favourite yoga for runners video but KC decided to do abs and because I'm overjoyed he is doing even a little bit of yoga, I joined him in the day 4 yoga for abs video.

Wednesday: 2 mile treadmill run (10:00 p/m) + yoga (20 mins)
Legs were sore today, but I (cockily) thought I had dodged the worst of it because of the yoga I did at the gym yesterday. Planned on 3 miles this morning but barely got through 2. Legs sore, blister on my heel from the new shoes. Need better socks. Think I need to run outside to get a real feel for the shoes. Hurry up 6am sunrise please, you make life so much easier.

I did about 20 minutes of yoga after my run and a couple stopped to ask me what I was doing as it looked like it hurt (pigeon). I explained, the woman sounded interested, I shared the bad yogi love and she said she'd definitely be checking it out on youtube. Yay!

Thursday: Lazy rest day.
I didn't sleep well so I didn't get up and go to the gym to do my upper body workout. Womp womp.  I meant to do something when I got home, but then.. I didn't. Legs were so sore I could barely walk. Why is the second day always worse? I also got 2 lots of bad news and 1 'that's great but I'm on the other side of the world so it makes me sad that I'm not there' news and I just wanted to wallow in expat self pity for a little while.

Friday: Another lazy rest day.
I didn't get up and go to the gym this morning, most likely because I didn't yesterday. Lazy breeds lazy. Did I mention my legs are still sore from Tuesday's leg work out? Note to self, don't take so much time off again. Also, still wallowing.

Saturday: Yoga at a real live studio with real people
(75 mins)
I went to a studio. I was so excited and ridiculously nervous. I got there super early after stressing about what to wear and if my mat was okay (I rented one instead) and did the Intro to Yoga class. The class is for beginning beginners, like yoga 101. Super helpful and I really enjoyed it. I came home feeling all yogi like, more confident and excited for the next class. Then I sat on my butt for the rest of the day.

Sunday: Yoga (30 mins)

I was going to run today because I didn't run yesterday, but I have this thing in the back of my knee that has been nagging at me all week, not sure what it is or how I did it, but I figured it would be better to take the day off, stretch some more, and start fresh tomorrow. Also, lazy breeds lazy, remember. Went to TJ Maxx for some new workout clothes, got home and obviously had to test them out. Did hamstring flow and wrists and hands videos. In class yesterday, my wrists were really hurting in down dog. The teacher explained how to avoid that, but explaining and doing are two different things and I couldn't quite get them to stop hurting.

Yoga 5 /  155 minutes
Running 2 / 4 miles

- Such a good feeling to workout in the morning. Really sets me up for the day and the week. I need to keep going throughout the week because one day off breeds more days off.

- I got a great deal on a groupon for that yoga studio that I had been wanting to try for awhile. It's for 10 classes and is valid for like 90 days, after that I would like to get to a point where I do a studio class once a week. One class down and I already feel a bit improved, or at least more confident. Bonus, because the class I went to is normally $5, they let me pay for it and save the groupon for the more expensive classes.

- The papa john's 10 miler is next weekend. I don't feel ready for it all, it's my least favourite race and I have had issues in the past. I'm not going to bail or anything, but I told myself I will not register for the Derby half unless the papa john's race goes well, and I don't think it is going to go well enough for me to sign up for the half. We'll see.

- My yoga mat is pretty embarrassing and almost falling apart. I need a new one that the cool kids at the yoga studio won't make fun of me if I bring it. Just kidding, but really, I need a new one. I tried looking but got overwhelmed with all the choices. Suggestions?

Next week:

Run more, do both strength workouts and don't be lazy.

Linking up with Holly. Here's to an even better week.

  1. You already know you're my exercise hero, girl. Keep on keeping on!

  2. Truthfully, I get up early enough to work out (yoga or Pilates), but I'd rather relax in the morning. I usually do something when I get home from school or right before bed.
I like reading about other people's workouts, but sometimes it makes me feel lazy...

  3. I am so amazed at people who can go to the gym in the morning. I wish I could get into that routine because working out at night basically takes up the entire night after work once you shower, have dinner, etc. And yay for visiting a yoga class and really liking it! We have some offered at our gym and I have no excuse not to go because they fit with my schedule most weeks, but I can't convince myself to go. And what was her suggestions for the hurt wrists??

  4. Umm I for one am super excited you are doing these. I love reading these posts. Ive been thinking about linking up for a while and as Alyssa said the post writes itself during the week. I really think it will keep me motivated too. I think Ill try for next week!!
Anyway as for your post - I suck at working out in the mornings! Your 10pm runs are way more my speed. Sometimes you need a good rest day. Lastly I am SOOOO nervous to go to a legit yoga studio. I do yoga at home with some youtube vids (awesome ones recommended by our blogger yogi Alyssa hehe) but I really want to try a studio. They are also SUPER expensive here and I already pay for the gym. A fitness struggle!

  5. Yay you did this! I might just be weird but I really like reading about other people's workouts.
I hope you get to take the shoes outside soon and that you love them!
Sorry to hear about the bad news :(
That's awesome you went to a class! I went to a beginners class like that for like a year and a half, haha. It was the best. I was just telling my sis in law I don't think I've been to a class since the last time she and I went to one together, and that was like 2 years ago. Need to get on that.
Sounds like a great week for you!

  6. Oh, you should have checked out the yoga mats at TJ Maxx - they have a super fitness section here!!!
Love that you are going to be doing a weekly recap - always fun to read these type of posts!

  7. I'm LOVING seeing all this yoga in your workout mix! You'll be amazed at how it helps your running. And if you really get into it, you'll see a transformation in your body you never expected. And if you stay with it, you'll see a calming of your mind and ability to handle stressful situations via breathing. Seriously. So happy to see a new yogi! Xoxo

  8. Get it girl! I feel the same way too many rest days and it turns into a rest month.

  9. Thanks for making me feel like a fatty! ;) I basically ate allllllllllll weekend haha! You go girl! I wish I had a yoga studio close to me!!

  10. I'm so glad you had a good experience in that class. I know that was a concern but I'm so happy it worked out well! Hopefully you'll find a nice, happy yoga home there. As for the wrists, sometimes it's just too much after a while. I know all the "right way" things to do to prevent wrist pain, and I do them all, but sometimes it's just too much pressure. If it's possible, in something like side plank or similar poses, I'll switch to fists rather than palms on the ground and it helps a bit in the moment.
I'm terribly sorry to hear about your bad news, and I hope you and KC and your mom and everyone is okay. You know where to find me if you want to talk about it or anything else.
    Try this yoga mat:
You don't really want to go for anything less than 5mm (there are a lot of 3mm mats out there) because knowing that you have a knee issue and especially if your wrists and hands are hurting, a 3mm mat won't give you enough cushioning and it won't be a good time. But don't go too thick, or it'll affect your balance in standing postures.

  11. Wow look at you! This was really inspiring :) I really want to get back into working out more and I think it would be better if I somehow document it because I often forget how important ti feels, maybe this way I'll see a progress? At least a mentally one. Go Kristen! Good luck at the race!

  12. keep at it! i'm all for morning workouts - it really does set the tone for the day and also gives you wicked energy. if i don't workout in the AM, i know for sure i won't do it in the PM.

  13. I love this post! I think I'm going to join yall on this - I need some accountability!

  14. I got my yoga mat from TJ Maxx so I probably am not one to dish out suggestions about that. Also, my yoga mat has maybe seen 10 sessions of yoga ever...mostly I use it for mountain climbers, planks and ab work and it is getting torn apart from my shoes that I am wearing. Oops.

In other news, I love getting my work out in first thing in the morning. I have ZERO excuse to not do it right then and there. It wakes me up and gives me energy and starts my day off on the right foot. It makes it easier to make healthy choices because I know I busted my ass that morning and worked hard so I dont want to blow it. Maybe I need to start working out on Saturdays too to see if I can have that same mind set...haha!

  15. Hooray for Sunday Sweats! I was actually thinking about putting a disclaimer on my posts, too. Because they're really just there to motivate me to do something worth posting about and I know most people won't be interested.

I like inner thigh burn, too. My mom and I have been doing a pilates video where you do clams for a few minutes and my mom always complains, but it's my favorite part of the video. Down dog is my nemesis - my arms always start to shake after about 30 seconds.

  16. I love reading other people's workouts because it gives me ideas of what I can do for mine!
    Thanks for sharing!

  17. I love seeing all these Sunday Sweats posts going--if anything, they are so great to hold yourself accountable for your weekly goals. I wish I could be into yoga as much as you or Tracy or others who I know, but I'm not. I think it's great that you still do yoga at home and do it well! I have a yoga mat from Target that I really love, and it's easy to carry around, I can't remember the brand however and it's in my car right now!
