Problems only book lovers understand

I have loved reading all my life, and I love talking to other book lovers about books. Some of these might be true for everyone, or just me - but I had fun thinking them up.

When someone doesn't like your favourite book.

When everyone is talking about a book that you've not heard of or read and you feel left out.

When you finish a good book (or series) and you kind of sit there, unsure of which book to start next because you're not ready to let go of the one you just finished.

In the past, I have read on my lunch break at work. I have now given up on that because it never fails to inspire someone to interrupt and ask me what I am reading.

When an author doesn't wrap the ending up perfectly or something goes unanswered.

I understand why some things need to be changed into the book to movie transition - did you know that if you have a character named John Smith and there is a John Smith in the area that you are filming your movie, you have to change your characters name? Interesting. But anyway, I hate when they change things for no reason especially when it's like the biggest part of the book, I'm looking at you a certain book written by a very popular author but I can't say it because then it will be obvious and spoilers.

Speaking of movies, when the casting is so off based on what's in your head, you literally can't even. Hollywood you have one job. One job.

When something is happening in a book you're reading but you can't talk to anyone about it because there are 2 types of people; those who haven't read it therefore they do not care, and those who have and they will either intentionally or unintentionally ruin it for you. I remember reading a certain series a few years ago and someone told me I would love a character I currently hated. Like, that's great but you couldn't wait for me to experience that myself? Now I know it happens.

When you finish a book and you want to tell everyone how good it was but no-one cares.

When you find a new series but you didn't know it wasn't finished and now you have to wait FOREVER for the next book but not long enough to forget everything so you can reread them, I'm looking at you Lunar Chronicles. I knew I should have waited!

When people look at you funny when you want to go into a bookstore instead of sephora, or when you want to read instead of going out, or when you can't see that movie because you haven't read the book yet or when you read while walking through an airport.

Being an accidental skimmer, aka you see a word or something on the next page that ruins the page you're on, so you have to cover it with your hand. Thanks kindle, you never show me a page ahead (unless I accidentally skip 5 pages then I have no idea where I am).

Every book lover has a fictional death they will never get over. No? Just me? Even if it's not a human.

Crying more over a book than you ever have over real life. See above. I'll never forget you, H.

I used to think main characters would never die, like in a Disney movie. I feel like I have lost my blanket of security. Now I'm always scared that it will all be ripped away from me.

And of course, the most cliché - but clichés are clichés because they are true.. One more chapter, one more page, all of a sudden it's 2am but hey you might as well finish the book now that you're so close.

When people tell me they don't like to read. I understand, there are things I don't like to do as well, but all I hear is 'I don't like puppies and kittens' as well.

When a book ends abruptly or you weren't expecting it because there was so many pages left (damn book club notes or previews to next books) and you keep checking the back of the book to see if you're somehow missing pages.

When someone says the movie is better than the book.

When a book first comes out only in hardback but the rest of the series is in paperback plus you don't even like hardbacks unless they are certain books, so you have to wait but that means waiting and I don't understand. So I guess I'm buying both.

When people ask you how you read so much, you just shrug and say 'I just do' or 'it's like breathing'. When people ask you why you read so much...

When you try and write a post about bookworm problems and it's so freaking long it's ridiculous you should probably cut it down but oh well, and these aren't even problems because books equal happiness and life.

OH LOOK IT'S MY FAVOURITE BOOK / MOVIE
Anyone feel the same?

  1. Haha yup, I feel you on pretty much all of these! And I've never, NEVER met a movie that has been better than the book. It's just not possible!

  2. Yes to all of these! There are some book-to-movie adaptions I won't go see because a) they picked the wrong characters or b) there's no way it would be as good as the book so why bother?

  3. I hate when I didn't know about a book until there was a movie version, and then I want to read the book but also don't because I know I'll just see the actors in the movie in my head the whole time I'm reading :(

  4. ALL of these things.

When someone tells me they don't read, it takes EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING not to side-eye them (and reevaluate their position in my life).

  5. Yes to all of this! Haha I so do the accidental skimming thing and have to cover the next page with my hand. I thought I was the only one! It's like I want to know what's happening next so badly that my eyes are going faster than my brain! or something.

  6. yes to all of them...esp when you pick up a series not realizing the last book hasn't come out yet #rage. happened to me with the passage series.... i have been waiting for 2 years for the last book and the release date has been moved to october 2015 boo.

  7. Spot on!!!!

I have had to actually set a timer at night so I do not read too long (aka until 4 am).

  8. Oh girl, this is great! All the them are so very true { can I just say how much I loved the Tarzan gif? One of my favorite movies }! Being sad when someone dies in a book is so tough because no one gets why you are sooooo sad. I actually stopped reading a series because they killed someone I cared about. UGH, authors, why you gotta do that!

  9. LOL!! These are great!! But it's too hard to pick a favorite because I was nodding my head in agreement most of the time! Although I don't know which very popular author you are talking about who changed things? So you'll have to let me know on the DL. Also interesting about the fact that you have to change a character name if someone in the area has the same name!!

  10. I can't stand the ambiguous ending! I need answers and I need them to be concrete! I generally don't read the same things that my friends, or even my husband, likes so I don't have to worry about spoiling anything for them or even attempting to have a convo with them about books.

  11. Your gifs are on point! And yes to the skimming. I hate it, but I want to know what happens so bad that I'll look at a few pages ahead and see if there is anything there.....

  12. Oh my god literally YES to all of these!! I can't even tell you how many times I have these struggles! I remember on high school a so-called friend read the final HP book in like a day and ruined the ending for me after I begged her NOT to tell me. I just couldn't even deal with her after that. And I still haven't seen Wild, even though I really want to because I love Reese Witherspoon, but I haven't read the book yet!!!

  13. OMG YES! To all of these!!! And I had no idea about having to change the name of a character if someone lives in the area by that name!! Crazy!

  14. Haha love this!! When a friend and I disagree over whether a book is good or not I seriously start to question our entire relationship!! My boyfriend is a "the movie was better" type guy, but since he never actually reads the books, I don't really think his vote counts. I feel like it's my mission to fill him in on all the important moments and character development he missed out on by not reading the book. I don't always read the book first, but when I do, I make it known!

  15. Tarzan was one of my treadmill movies a couple weeks ago! Jane is so much fun. I'm always a little bit crushed when someone doesn't understand how good a book is. And I'm taking an enforced break from reading because of all the sleep deprivation last week!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yes to all of these! Every. Single. One. And you are the GIF Queen!

    ReplyDelete
  17. These gifs made my day! I laughed at every one of them. Also, I used to read during lunch and it never failed - some a-hole would come and sit at my table to talk to me. If I went without a book anticipating a conversation, I'd end up all alone. What up with dat?!

  18. I read Girl On A Train in two hours - it was soooo good in my books so I recommended it to my Mom who also loves reading and she was just meh about it. I don't understand when people don't like the books I love! haha

I hate movies based on books because books are just SO much better. People who only watch the movies and don't read the books make zero sense to me. And I can't put a book down when I start reading so I have to plan my life around when I can sit down and read a book in its entirety. #nerdalert

  19. Finishing a good book always plays with my emotions!.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Even though I can't relate to some of your frustrations, your post like this crack me up! Always so funny! I like to read but don't make enough time for it but when I do, I always stay up WAY too late finishing the book. Every. time.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Haha yes to all of these! I am the only one in my group who loves reading, it is so rough having no one to talk about the awesome book I just finished!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Okay I don't want to leave one of those annoying super-agreeing comments but seriously, I tried to pick out a few of these to OMG over, but no... literally all of them, spot on. Serious problems here. You speak truth. But I need to know: which book were you talking about with the movie changing details? (I have never once fully enjoyed a film adaptation of the book because WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE CHANGING THAT SCENE?!?!)

  23. There are absolutely book deaths I will never get over. Same with book loves!

    ReplyDelete
  24. You took the words out of my mind & put them all right here... this is perfection!!!!!
I HATEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE when I find out its a series. After the Harry Potter thing & having to go to the store at midnight for the next book, I swore I'd wait till the next series I read was all over with before I do that again.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes to all of these!!! I usually dont read a book when it first comes out for fear it might be a series and I have zero patience! And deaths in books are just emotional scars that never go away. Like Marley. Whyyyyyyy take the dog?!?!?! And I haven't seen so many movies (Hello Gone Girl) because I haven't read the book yet. Speaking of which, time to watch One for the Money! So on point with this one and all the gifs!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ughhhhh that is the worst when a book ends abruptly. I immediately have to go back and read like the last 20 pages to see if I missed something.....

    ReplyDelete
  27. haha I love this post! I totally agree with all of them AND why have I not heard of Lunar Chronicles???? Do I need to stop what I am doing at the current moment and run out and purchase?

    ReplyDelete
  28. YES to all of these!! I have one to add: when you are packing light for your honeymoon and you don't want your kindle to get wet/sandy at the beach, but you know you'll go through at least 5 books during the week and YOU CAN'T PACK THEM ALL

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love this!!! I finally solved the hardback problem because now I just buy books on my Nook - usually I preorder so they magically appear on the release date - true happiness!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. My mom always reads the last chapter first.

Also, my problem is when a book group or club chooses a book and they're books I read like 3 years ago. Like, step up and get with the times. If the people in your club are excited about reading The Help in the year 2014 or The Happiness Project in the year 2015, they probably shouldn't be in a book club.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Aca-scuse me!!! Hahahahah! Love it! I always love your gif posts! They ae so perfect! I am such an accidental skimmer! I feel like my eyes just do it on purpose like wtf?! I definitely need to try the hand trick haha! Ugh I need to read more!

  33. Yes! Books DO equal happiness and life! :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes yes yes and yes! Always read the book before the movie (I honestly do not get how people watched Harry Potter without reading them first... how did they understand what was going on!?) and that lost feeling after finishing a series is horrible!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Best.Both.Ever.... SERIOUSLY! So much truth girlfriend! And I want to know if we're talking about the same movie that basically TOTALLY changed the book and it was just stupid/pointless/not the same story anymore?! Belle is my fave Disney princess and when people ask why I say, "Because she loves books!" :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes, yes, and triple quadruple yes to everything on this list. I'm forever talking about the book characters like they're real people to Actual people who have no idea what I'm talking about. Books will forever be better than their movie counterparts and I'm never understand the timewarps that are reading books :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh girlie, you know I feel the same (for the most part, except I do love hardcovers). And these gifs were fab!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes. To all of it.

My coworker the other day said she doesn't think she's ever read a full novel. I almost died.

OMG the paperback/hardback dilemma. I need my series to match!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Holy crap, you speak to my soul. All the feels to this blog post...all the feels. And for the record, the movie NEVER beats the book. Ever. If people argue this point, they should be put into a room and locked there until they learn. AmIRight?!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yes, I can so relate to all of these. There are so many books I can't get over. I have to wait at least a night before starting another book so I can move on. So many books so little time!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Love!!! I agree with every single one of these and was laughing out loud reading this!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. This was great!! Yes, to so many of these. I particularly hate waiting on series to come out and get mad when I start one before it is finished! At the same time though you can only wait so long if it is a popular series. The ban of my existence for series book is The Game of Thrones...that series is impossible!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Haha, yes. Great post!

Every book lover has a fictional death they will never get over. No? Just me? Even if it's not a human. -> Ginger in Black Beauty for me. *Sniff*. There are others, but that was the first.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Nope not just you. Especially the not being ready to let go when you finish...and talking about it and no one caring...ok all of it really.

    ReplyDelete
  45. This post is perfect. Yes yes yes to all of it :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. hahaha yes to all of these! Great post! I definitely have fictional deaths that I will never get over.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I cannot handle when someone interrupts me when I'm reading a book just to chit chat...clearly I am busy why in the world are you interrupting me?

    ReplyDelete
  48. hahaha you are so spot on with this post. I can't tell you how many times someone posts a book review and I say how haven't I heard of this book? How come everyone else has? WTF! haha
I get insane when a book ends abruptly or not the way I want. I want to chat with the author about it haha ... and no the movie is never ever better!

    ReplyDelete
  49. that is me--no one cares when i tell them about my books!

    ReplyDelete
  50. This. IS. PERFECTION!!!! Go girl. Ha! My favorite was the Phoebe one -- "my eyes!!!". SO TRUE. I can't get enough of this post. Sharing it on twitter because everyone needs to know how awesome it is ;)

  51. How about when you tell someone about how wonderful a book is and you tell them to read it and they don't.. until it's about to come out in theaters! I hate that! Also, the movies are NEVER better than the book!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yes, to all these things. When I want to talk to someone about a book, I try to pick the people who aren't planning on reading it, so I can tell them all the things and not worry about ruining anything for them.. but FIE to those people who accidentally give away spoilers. I just.. /cry.

  53. LOL I had to comment mainly because that Dance Moms gif is hilarious and I totally watch that show aaahhhhh... those crazy moms! :) I've definitely been there when finishing a book or series and feeling empty almost or a mix of happy and sad? And I don't want to start another one just yet.... And Joey doesn't care about hearing about a book I've read and loved. Nope - but he's a pretty good faker! ;) lol I would 100% rather go into a book store than Sephora.... deeeefinitely.

  54. Crying over books is definitely a problem for me hahaha. Especially cause I like to read in public places like work, coffee shops, airports and I'm a big crier....

  55. oh my gosh, these gifs are hilarious! I especially love the first one! And yess to staying up literally all night because one more chapter turns into, well I'm almost done now I might as well finish!

  56. YAAAASSS!! I don't know how many times I've looked at the clock and almost smacked myself in the face because it's 4am when I could have sworn it was just 10pm the chapter (or two or three or four or five) before.
