So I am hoping, with this post, that I will tell you all who I'd like to be, but probably won't be, and then like Tracy, I'll start working towards making those things a reality. Maybe. We'll see. Like reverse psychology, hopefully.
1. The opposite of a shopaholic.
I have had shopping issues since I started making money at 15. Shopping makes me happy. I don't want it to, but it does. If you gave me x amount of money and told me to go shopping, I wouldn't think twice about all the things I could buy.
2. A person with a capsule wardrobe.
Shopping might make me happy but looking into a closet full of crap I don't like and don't wear is getting old fast. I'm not sure if I will ever have a legit capsule wardrobe, I just want a wardrobe full of things I like and actually wear.
3. A marathoner.
I can barely run 13 miles let alone 26. You crazy. I don't know.. maybe, one day. I want to master the half before I go on to the full. If I go on to the full.
4. A vegetarian.
I don't particularly like meat. We never have beef or pork at home, I don't love the taste of chicken. Turkey (ground / mince) is ok but I can survive without it. I'm positive I could eat vegetarian at home all the time, it's when I go out that's the problem. Sometimes I want a greasy whopper after a night out. Sometimes I like chik fil a sandwiches. Ignore the fact that I'm not supposed to eat the buns either of those sit on, that's not the point right now. My friend's dad owns a restaurant and he makes this koobideh (ground beef) that I absolutely love... If I ever go home again, I want to eat meat pies and sausage rolls and everything my mum makes. So I'm kinda scared to be a vegetarian, I guess. I think of it as 'I don't want to put myself in a box I can't get out of'. I already have dietary restrictions, why add more? But I know the benefits to being a vegetarian, and they are the results of omitting meat but also because of an increase in plant based foods. So I don't know where I am going with this.

i actually really love salads... |
This goes hand in hand with shopping. I'm also super sentimental and it's hard for me to let go of stuff - dresses that don't fit anymore and never will but I can't part with them because I wore them once and loved them... Just random crap all over the house. I hate the 'want more, want bigger' mentality but sometimes it's easy to get caught up in it. But I would like to at least get to a 'minimalish' lifestyle, not quite tiny home living, but just not any bigger and without all the stuff that we don't really need.
Here's hoping the reverse psychology works and soon I'm a vegetarian minimalist with a capsule wardrobe but no shopping addiction who is training for a marathon. Maybe?
Anything you want to be but probably never will be?
Oh I loved this! What an awesome idea. I think this reverse psychology thing could really work. I'll probably never not be a worrier, although I'm working hard to try and not worry as much. It's kinda working. I'm sure there's other things but that'd be top of my list!
ReplyDeleteCarly xo
literally if I was writing the 5 things I'd never be everything that you wrote is exactly what I'd write. So funny! Although you definitely have me beat on how far you can run. I'm lucky to get 3 in... 13 would kill me. And I'm super sentimental too, I have SUCH a hard time getting rid of anything! Even when I got a new car I got super sad... who does that?!

This would be so tough for me to write :P I would like to have a nicer closet with items that I actually wear. Over the years I've thrown out a lot of things or donated them so it does look a lot better now but sometimes I just stare at it and think "Wow, I hate everything" SIGH!!!

i dont even know what a capsule wardrobe is so there's that.
ReplyDeletei'd also never be a marathoner because marathon. that's an awful lot of work for a free shirt and bananas :D
This is an interesting way to look at things, I don't know really what I would say but it has me thinking now! And I totally had to look up what a capsule wardrobe is, ya I don't have that happening.
ReplyDeleteOh, great post!! I love all your ideas . . . well except being a vegetarian although I could do with less meat. I think none of us are perfect, and if you just keep these goals in mind, you'll get there or at least very close! Love reading your blog!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI think you could be all of these things, for sure - IF you really wanted to which, like I've told you before, is the point, I think. Not everyone needs to be any or all of these things and if you don't really want to, no big deal. But if you do decide you want to, you absolutely have it in you to go out and do them.
ReplyDeleteAs far as being vegetarian, there's no rule that says you can never, ever eat meat again, not even once. If you feel good doing it 50% of the time, or 80% or 90%, that's great! I totally understand not wanting to label yourself and restrict yourself even further, so don't. I think a lot of people get caught up in their dietary labels and that's just silly. I see it as a spectrum, not an either/or thing.
Thanks for the votes of confidence! I'm glad you did this, it was fun reading your answers!
i love this! im with you on everything... i love to shop and i like options (for dinner and in my closet!) xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! There are so many things I'd like to be including a marathoner (heck I'd like to just be a "runner") but 3 miles kills me so I think anything over that is a no-go for now!
ReplyDeleteThese are all people I will never be either!! I'm really picky about my food and how it's cooked and Gary always tells me I should just be a vegetarian, but I love to eat meat...and just can't give that up!! Marathon running - bahaha never going to happen for me!! xo, Biana - BlovedBoston
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea! I feel the same way about shopping! I don't think that I will ever be able to completely go a month without getting even something small. It's pretty tough.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting concept! I liked Tracy's comment above about being those things if you WANT to be them. Some of these things I think you genuinely want (like running a full marathon....and you most certainly CAN do that!), some I think you're trying to talk yourself into (like vegetarian)!! Anyway, good food for thought today! I have no idea what would be on my list!
ReplyDeleteGina - On the Daily Express
I'll never be any of those things either, but I have no desire to be. So that's that. LOL
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be a person who got up early to exercise faithfully every day, but I will never be that person.
I want someone to pick my clothes out for me. I love shopping but I buy crap. I would have loved to have been on what not to wear.
ReplyDeleteI am SO with you on the full marathon. I had big plans, but... I just don't think I have it in me. The amount of time it takes to train for (even just a half) marathon is ridiculous! I'll do another half one day, but I think I'm done with the marathon dream.
ReplyDeleteI loved reading this. It's so fun to learn more personal things about bloggers.
HA yes to ALL of these things. I seriously have tried so hard not to be such a crazed shopaholic...but hey a girl likes pretty things right? lol. Also, I agree that after crossing the finish line at a half marathon I could not IMAGINE doing a full marathon. I'm content only being half crazy. ;)
ReplyDeleteI would also love to be a minimalist. We've cut back on a lot of our crap over the past year, but it has a way of piling up. I'm not a big collector and I take great pleasure in purging, but I also have those sentimental items that I don't think I could part with. Although maybe I could cut down the three tubs of sentimental items to just one ;-) It's a work in progress!
ReplyDeleteI've been vegetarian for about 4 years and recently started eating poultry and fish on the odd occasion. A mostly plant-based diet makes me feel great, but I've found that every now and then I crave something outside of a vegetarian diet and I think it's good to listen to our bodies. I'm still learning what works for my body and what doesn't, but I think I'm getting closer :-)
Haha love this post! And I can relate to every one! Shopping makes me happy too, and I KNOW it shouldn't but it does! I don't know what to do about it, because it really is one of the ways I relax and unwind! And yeah, I just know I will never be a vegetarian. And I'm not sorry about it. ::shrugs::
ReplyDeletethe ron sawnson gif is my fav. I would love to be a minimalist. especially if we ever move i know it's going to be such a hassle!
ReplyDeleteI naturally don't eat a lot of meat. When Scott's not here, I might buy a rotisserie chicken every couple of weeks but I don't like cooking it for myself.
ReplyDeleteAs for the shopping...I bought myself a few things for my birthday in January and haven't shopped since. I have a goal of not buying new clothes until summer. I don't go out shopping (online ordering is my weakness) and I don't actually need anything, so it doesn't really phase me at this point. I have a friend who gives herself $100 a month and that's it. If she saves it, it rolls over though.
I don't know if I could ever be a vegetarian! I love meat too much. But I do wish I could be a half-marathoner! One day.
ReplyDeleteI can tell you first hand that running a marathon is over rated. Halfs are fun, but fulls are just... A lot of running. As for the food, eat what makes you happy and healthy and don't worry about any label! I'm 80% vegetarian and that's ok. And if you like an occasional burger, go for it!
ReplyDeleteYes to all of these! Especially the wardrobe one....I always hate everything once it is in my own closet....and yet if you ask me to get rid of it I will suddenly long for it....so weird.
ReplyDeleteThe older I get the more weird I'm getting about eating meat- though I don't think I could ever give it up completely because there are certain things I love. I think you could totally do a marathon one day! Also, I'm a fan of the minimalish :)
ReplyDeleteYessss! I'm with you on ALL of these! I don't eat much meat but sometimes my body feels like it needs it!
ReplyDeleteMinimalism is such a great concept, but I'm like you - I like the idea of it, but I don't actually want to get rid of my stuff. I like having things, and lately I've been trying to purge more, but then a couple months later I find myself wishing I hadn't because I have a use for them! My biggest weakness is art supplies. You go 2 years without using it, and then you have a big project and it's totally worth it!
ReplyDeleteThe capsule wardrobe is such a cool concept. I would love to try that as an experiment. You know I wouldn't say I love meat either but Vegetarian? No... I have those same cravings like you do just add tacos to the list!
ReplyDeleteI was a vegetarian in High school for 4 years...I'm not anymore, it didn't go over to well lol
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I may just do my own post. I really struggle with minimalism myself. I attach too much sentiment to objects and even though logically I know I have a bunch of junk, I can't seem to part ways. I'm a big fan of horizontal running. I'll have to do that while I continue my binge-watch of Gilmore Girls. ;)
ReplyDeleteGirl, I think you could totally do a marathon! And I totally get what you mean about putting yourself in the 'vegetarian box' - I've been making a conscious effort to eat less meat but don't think I could ever go full vegetarian. But never say never, right?!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't become vegetarian either, but I love meat especially chicken!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a capsule wardrobe but you see how I struggle with getting rid of things I don't even love in my closet. I am ridiculous! I want to love everything too! And shopping makes me happy so no judging here.
ReplyDeleteI could never be a full on vegetarian because cheeseburgers!!! Haha! I rarely eat meat for lunch and I try to have at least one meatless meal for dinner each week...but I need the protein to keep me full.
I want to be a marathoner.... but I don't see it... anything is possible though.
ReplyDeleteGive up meat!! YOU CAN DO IT :)
I want to be a person who lives in a tiny house and grows my own food, but reality is, it's not going to happen. I love the concept though and living with less.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same about vegetarianism.... I like the idea of it but yes sometimes I just want a greasy hamburger. And yeah it totally sucks having one mandatory category of food that's off limits because of health issues but then to add another..oy vey. the best compromise I have is to call myself a flexitarian, I put a good faith effort into eating primarily vegetarian but having wiggle room for cravings. Sometimes I'm just so hungry and the only thing that will satisfy me is a pulled pork sandwich!
ReplyDeleteYou know I think you're brilliant and wonderful and talented and smart and so I think you can do anything you set your mind to. I think where people get tripped up a lot is not knowing the difference between something they admire in others and something they want for themselves. Like, I totally admire people who are able to use a capsule wardrobe, and in some respects I envy them for that simplicity in their lives. But do I want it for myself? No, because I love wearing clothes with insane patterns that match with only one other thing, and I don't want to not be able to wear them. I admire ultra-marathoners, but I have no interest in running anything over 26.2 miles. I think if you really *wanted* to do those things, you could certainly. But if those aren't the priority goals in your life, there's nothing at all wrong with that. They're things that maybe work for others, but not for you. Good for her, not for me.
ReplyDeleteRe: the vegetarian thing. I was one when I was younger, but it was basically a mask for an ED and it was just insanely unhealthy. I fixed that though, and have made some other changes. I haven't eaten red meat in something like 7 or 8 years, I can't remember exactly. I have never ever ever cooked pork in my life and very rarely order it out. Over the last few months I've stopped preparing all poultry and fish at home, but I do still order a turkey burger or chicken dish when I go out. I'm comfortable with this as it severely limits my consumption of something I question the ethics of without putting expectations on myself that I'm not ready to meet.
This is fun! and I agree with ALL of them. I'll never be any of those things haha
ReplyDeleteI've been tossing around a similar idea for a post! Great minds :)
ReplyDeleteI will never be someone who enjoys getting up early or who is productive in anyway before 10 am and if I have to be then I'm productive only by necessity or force. I was a vegetarian for a long time and would love to go back to it but I really do like eating chicken right now. I can live without all the others. It was easier than I thought it was. Until I became really unhealthy. That's a story for another day.
YES to anything Ron Swanson says! Favorite TV character ever -- well close tie with Donna on the same show, but you know. I totally think you could eventually get to a marathon -- you've got the will to do the half -- so it's only like 13 more right? :)
ReplyDeleteAnd yes to shopping all day errryday -- it is soo hard to not.
I would actually not want to be a perfectionist. It can really get in the way sometimes. I would also love to be a healthy eater. I am so impressed with your running...I really want to start running, but the motivation is just not there! Haha.
ReplyDeleteOk yes to all of these hahaha! I don't think I will ever be any of them! Especially Shopoholic! And I am sooooo bad about getting rid of things! I feel like I'll think of one memory with the object and be like Nope I have to keep it haha! I am so bad with getting rid of clothes!

I'm super sentimental too AND have a mega shopping addiction (that I'm working on!). I've defintiely gotten better at being able to part with things the older I've gotten but I have to go through the house every few months to purge or else I start looking like a hoarder.
ReplyDeleteI once went 30 days as a vegeterian but had to quit because vegetarian options are not readily available on the prairies where farming is such a part of life. I barely eat any meat now that I have my braces on though so I'm thinking once I get my braces off I'm going to try to live as close to a vegeterian diet as possible - I've still got a looong way to go before that though
I can do relate to this! I would love to be a marathoner, but will settle for a sprint triathlon at some point. And I would also love to be a minimalist.... But yeah. I do my best in that department. :-)
ReplyDeleteI couldn't ever do a full marathon- that's just a fact. I think after I do my 1/2 marathons this Spring, I'm done with those, too. I think I'd much rather just really work on my 5k game. That's more my style! My entire perception of shopping has changed over the past couple of years- so it IS possible ;) I really enjoy having less things and just making sure I LOVE everything I do own.
ReplyDeleteI would looooooove to be a minimalist. If I ever move cities or something I'm taking barely anything! :)
ReplyDeleteBaha Ron Swanson. Loved this! You crack me up!
ReplyDeletewww.madeintheshadeblog.com
This is such a great idea for a blog post! It's like forcing you to confront why you can't be these things. I think you can do it all!
ReplyDeleteAlso, is it bad that I had to look up what a "capsule wardrobe" is? Now that I have the definition (lol) I realize that I'm well on my way to one without even knowing... that's weird ha! My parents are like really into fashion so when I turned 13 and basically hit my adult size, they built my wardrobe for me. More expensive pieces (instead of the cheap stuff I wanted) and in cuts that wouldn't go out of style. I have denim and boots and coats that are 13 years old! I hated it growing up but now I'm kinda glad LOL Isn't that how it always is with parents?
Love the horizontal running! Too funny! I will never be the opposite of a shopaholic either. I really have to get a hold on things, but it's definitely a challenge for me!
ReplyDeleteThe Ron Swanson gif is one of my favorites. I love meat...all the meats. But I do love salad too...mostly because I love ranch & croutons though...
ReplyDeletehaha Ive said this before. You and I are a lot alike. I have told Tracy before I cant do the capsule wardrobe thing, I clearly like to shop, aint no way I will ever give up meat ... meat is life, I give up carbs all the time but not meat ... And my 4'11" short legged self is never going to run a marathon (although I love running). But I do love people who do all these things and admire them!
ReplyDeleteInteresting list. As I've stated before, I feel ya on that whole shopaholic problem. In fact, I bought two shirts today. I didn't need the shirts, but they were on sale..............
ReplyDeleteHaha here's to hoping you stay just the way you are, unless you wanna be a minimalist vegetarian that doesn't shop a lot and runs marathons then I say go for it! I agree with the marathon thing though. I've done 2 halfs so reason I could do a full but then I start training for a full and tink meh, maybe not lol
ReplyDeleteI would love to be all of those. Unfortunately, I love horizontal running and shopping hahaha!!
ReplyDeleteI would love to be all of those. Unfortunately, I love horizontal running and shopping hahaha!!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this idea! I'm not sure I can ever give up meat but the last one! I'm with ya on that one!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about shopping! I try to avoid shopping sprees completely but I do love sporadic shopping. I do work and make money for a reason and not just to pay the bills!!! Also love the horizontal running gif!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the meat thing. While I don't crave meat that often, when I do...THERE'S NO STOPPING ME! Especially when it comes to In N Out Burger! haha
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think that you are the younger prettier version of me!!!
ReplyDeleteI used to be such a shopaholic. In college they (whoever that is) kept sending me credit card approval things - at one point I had at least 20! I thought it was so great to not have money but be able to shop!! Boy was I stupid!!! No one ever taught me about how that system really works:( And, there is no way I could/would ever be a vegetarian - I like meat!!!
You can totally be the person who is/does all these things. I'm hella impressed that you can run 13 miles. 26 sounds like death to me, but I know you can handle it.
ReplyDeleteHi! It's been a while since I made it here, and you have a million comments on your post that I don't have time to sift through, so forgive me if I just say something someone else has!
ReplyDelete1) I am the opposite of a shopoholic, but I do understand (to some extent) about how it makes you happy. I have no advice there.
2) Capsule wardrobe? I had to google that. It actually sounds like a nice idea. I have a reasonable amount of clothing, I suppose (not being a big fan of shopping), but I really seem to only wear basic pieces/outfits for the seasons. So maybe I have one unintentionally? Or maybe one would be a step up for me and make it better? I must investigate this...
3) I ran a marathon. I'm not doing it again, and no one can make me. No friggen' way. Half marathons? Half, I can walk after and go out to dinner. My marathon? I could barely move and I cried. A lot. People are not as happy at the end either, the race feels very different compared with a half. If it's you, go for it. But if it's not? Don't fight that.
4) Vegetarian. I was one for many years, but the health benefits are NOT any better than a truly balanced and healthy diet that does include some animal proteins. So, don't tell yourself that you're cheating your health by not being one. The trick is being a smart consumer of food, no matter which style of eating you choose to embrace.
5) Minimalist... I think it has it's place (have you seen those tiny houses? Where they cost only a few thousand dollars? Very minimalist, etc... kind of cool though.) I'm getting there. My children are headed out the door (my daughter will be off to college next year, my son in high school) and I'm realizing I don't need as much. But really, it was the children who needed so much. I found the easiest way to be a minimalist (and maybe combat the shopping) is to ask yourself if you want to clean and take care of *whatever* every single day/week in your home. It really helps!
I'm trying to think of the 5 things for myself, but they're more like "paths not taken" like I wanted to be a doctor. Hmm.
I went vegetarian 4 or so years ago and it was way easier than I thought it would be. I wasn't crazy about meat in the first place and I've found suitable replacements for the things that I crave (like faux-bbq and veggie burgers with extra cheese.) My boyfriend recently became a 'flexitarian' and only eats meat on Saturday and Sunday. You gotta do what's right for you! :)
ReplyDeleteMe too on the shopping and minimalism. I tried a capsule once. And I found it too limiting. It made me tired of my clothes. It works for people, but I don't know that it's my thing. I am really enjoying the fashion prompt challenge I am doing on IG right now though, it has me mixing my stuff up more. I think that is better for me. I really need variety in my life. :) I gave up meat for Lent once, I'm not Catholic, I just like goals and challenges. And I was also doing yoga twice a day every week day, and walking across a huge campus.... so I was really really healthy. But I was even thinner without the meat. Which is probably why I feel so giant now. When I'm probably just on the slightly heavy end. I dunno. It was really good most of the time. I did have the travel thing though, I didn't want to not be able to try new cuisines because of meat. I eat more meat than I used to, but not too much, I still don't have much of an attachment to it. I think these are kind of awesome goals, plus by moving towards them, even slightly, in the reverse psyc kind of way, you could rule some of them out. Like I did with the capsule wardrobe. :) XO -Alexandra
ReplyDeleteSimply Alexandra: My Favorite Things
hahahaha i love this so much. so funny. so true. i can completely relate.
ReplyDeleteHaha! I'm definitely not a marathoner, but I am the other 4!
ReplyDeleteAll of these except for the vegetarian... because I already am. But 13 miles... YOWZA! I don't even think I can do ONE!
ReplyDeleteI'm actually a new vegetarian! I'm going on 3 months and so far so good. I haven't craved meat, and I'm actually enjoying all the vegetarian substitutions and options. :)
ReplyDelete
