Stitch Fix - First Impression

I am sure you have heard of stitch fix before, so I won't go into detail about it.

I signed up a few months ago and then almost immediately cancelled it. It just didn't seem like my cup of tea - all the prices were more than I'd like to pay, and I thought I was pretty good at shopping for myself. However, since I basically had a closet full of clothes I disliked, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and sign up again. I scheduled my first 'fix' to arrive on my birthday, because you can't feel guilty about getting anything on your birthday, right? It ended up arriving 2 days early, which was awesome.

I can say - so far - it has definitely helped with my online shopping addiction, because I am looking forward to my fix. I set my March one up to arrive later in the month - this one arrived too early in the month and left way too much time for me to want to shop - hopefully I can continue to behave and not go over budget.

Note: the link I am using in this post is a referral link - if you sign up for stitch fix, I get a $25 credit! Which is like free money, so I had to use it. Please sign up. Jk. Mostly.

Courtney posted her fix last month and I absolutely adored one of the items she got (and pinned it like 10 times so that my stylist person would hopefully get the hint) and after lots more pinteresting and googling I decided to re-sign up. I told myself I would give them 3 chances and if I hated them all, or the price points were just too high, I would cancel it again.

So here's what I got for my first 'fix' - prepare yourselves for stellar iphone photos.

Rosalia Double Strand Charm Necklace $34 - Sent back

This is cute, but I can't see myself wearing it.. To be honest, it looks quite cheap and it's definitely not my style. I like longer necklaces but they have to be more substantial - this one is too dainty to be as long as it is, at least for me. I know you can't really see it in the photo, don't worry - you're not missing anything.

Malcolm Dolman Sleeve Slub Knit Shirt $48 - Sent back

I'm assuming they sent me this because I said I really loved Courtney's Market and Spruce Corinna Striped Heathered Dolman Top.. but I liked that top because the sleeves weren't too dolman-y and it was just super cute and striped. This one... too dolman-y, not a fan of the material or fit or anything.

Kieraly Dot Print Short Sleeve Blouse $68 - Sent back

Not gonna lie, this top is super cute. I don't like wearing short sleeves to work, but I would wear this to work. I would also wear it for fun.. but the fit wasn't perfect (especially in the back) so I didn't love it, and for $68 I need to love it. It would have been perfect with longer sleeves and $20 cheaper.

Moss V-Neck Pleated Dress $68 - Sent back

This dress is gorgeous in person. I thought it would be a contender, but when I tried it on, ew. Not for me. It must be for women with boobs, because it was so frumpy and gross up top on me and just not cute. I love the colour and the pleats - gorgeous! But the fit was off, and it was a little shorter than I like (I think the way I'm holding the phone makes it look longer). And honestly, I have nowhere to wear a pretty dress like this, even if it did fit perfectly.

Kathy Striped Fit & Flare Dress $68 - Kept!

I actually saw this dress while I was pinteresting and really liked it. It is beautiful, well made and I just love it. Fit & Flare + Sleeves + Stripes? Sold! I just love the way it fits, I can totally wear it to work (its a bit shorter than I'd like, but with stockings it's ok) and for fun. The stripes don't match up (can't help but notice it thanks to Amanda!) but I think it looks ok. You can just tell it's super well made, from the detail on the shoulders to the darts on the bust, I just love it. Very feminine. The bad part - there was a mark, like someone had grabbed a sharpie and drawn a line on the inner arm. Super disappointing. For $68 I would hope my dress wouldn't be marked like it was a seconds book or something. It's not very noticeable, and I emailed them and they offered to send me a replacement in the same size after I returned it, or 15% off if it was repairable. I think I can fix it and it really isn't that noticeable so I happily took the 15% off. Thanks stitch fix!

So that was my first 'fix'. I'm bummed I didn't get the 3 items I pinned a bunch and basically begged for (a pleated swing skirt, a striped top and a polka dot dress) but I understand that you can't always get specific items and the stylist (Jenna) did say she would try and send them if they ever came back in stock. It was probably for the best though, because I would have gone way over budget if I'd bought all of those items! So overall I am actually super happy with stitch fix - it was fun to look forward to, the items weren't super expensive and it was a pretty good mix of my style and not for the first one. And I really do love my pretty striped dress.

Should I take it to Europe? It's thicker material and the sleeves are longer, but Paris won't be super warm (not to me) and neither will Dublin. Decisions, decisions.

Have you tried stitch fix?

  3. I really love that striped dress. I am also a fan of stripes on everything lol.....The green dress was a pretty color but if the fit is off for that much money, ya you gotta return it.

  5. the dress is pretty. glad you kept it but dang about the mark on it!

  6. What an interesting concept. I've seen a couple stitch fix posts, but I didn't understand what it was. You tell them what you like and they pick stuff out for you? Basically online shopping but with a consultant?

  7. CUTE dress! i say bring it to europe...with some thick stockings, a cardigan and boots! xo jillian - cornflake dreams

  8. Love the dress you ended up keeping it! Hopefully you can get the mark out of the sleeve. If not it's still super cute! I've never heard of stitch fix before but I'll have to check them out!

  9. Ughhhhhh stitch fix.... I don't know how I feel about it! Of course I've read about it on a hundred blogs, and I know a couple of people in real life that get it. It just seems a lot of stuff is over priced for what it is. $70 for a polka dot top? That just seems ridiculous to me! Is the quality of the items good at least? The dress you kept looks great on you. But I agree with all the other stuff. Though emerald green looks great on you, remember that for future purchases!

  11. I love the dress you kept and definitely think you should take it to Europe! I'm glad they gave you a discount for the repair because for the price, it should be in good shape! I've been hearing quite a bit about stitch fix lately and checked it out, but they don't ship to Canada. I guess I'll just have to enjoy seeing what everyone else gets!

  12. The flared dress that you kept looks flawless on you - I agree with you on some of the pricing, just a bit much!!! My friend just signed up for it and I'm curious to see what she gets and what she has to say about it!! Hope you have a great weekend! xo, Biana - BlovedBoston

  14. I dunno. I love the idea of stuff being sent to me, but, I don't pay more than $10 for a shirt (ever, it's more like $5) and dresses maybe $20. So I'm waaaaay to cheap for this place haha
But, that stripe dress is pretty on you! And you're crazy, so was the green one.

  15. I've never been interested in Stitch Fix because I am so not a clothes person and suck at shopping in general. And the price points always just seem SO DANG HIGH. But as I was reading your post, it kind of dawned on me. Stitch Fix might just be what I need BECAUSE I hate shopping for clothes...I can't remember the last time I bought an item of clothing...It had to be at least 2 years ago. And I hate everything in my closet...I might have to check it out. Also-that dress is absolutely freaking AMAZING on you!

  16. I've gone back and forth on stich fix. People love it or they don't and I'm scared too try:)!

LOVE the dress you kept, it's fabulous on you!

  17. That dress looks great on you! I have heard about stitch fix but I am still a bit hesitant just because of the prices.

  18. That striped dress is DARLING on you! Absolutely darling. And yay for 15% off. I hope you can fix it!

  19. I love seeing what people get in these boxes and LOVE the dress you kept! It looks amazing on you and the extra 15% off is a nice bonus too!

  20. I love the dress you kept-so pretty! Which month are you going to Europe? It definitely could be a fun dress for that. :)

  21. I've looked at it a couple of times but for me, the price points are just too high. I do love the dress that you kept, though! I just don't think you can go wrong with stripes!

  22. The dress you kept is adorable on you! Thanks for sharing, I think Stitch Fix is definitely out of my budget for now but it's good to know for the future!

    ReplyDelete
  23. You look PRECIOUS in that dress!!!
I just cant imagine some of the prices on some of this stuff... but I guess its worth it when you get an adorable look like you got :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love the dress that you kept. I also like the gray top you didn't keep ha.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would love to try it in the future. I am just not sure bc I have a long torso and big boobs, etc. I find that things always fit me oddly. Idk if I will like anything they send. I love the dress you chose though! Great pick!

  26. omg I LOVE that striped dress!! It looks fab on you. Bummer about that polka dot top - it looks super cute, but I agree with you that it's a little too pricey. I may have to try stitch fix once I'm back to my 'normal' body. :) Happy Friday!

  27. I love the dress that you kept!!! I love reading other people's posts but I would never sign up for this. Their stuff is way too high $$ and I am someone who has to try EVERYTHING on so I rarely order clothes online in the first place. I would think box after box would be a huge disappointment for me. But you know, keep posting so I can play along! Its like the fashion equivalent to house hunters! Happy Weekend Love!

  28. I love what you kept.

I just cancelled Stitch Fix. Too many months of misses, clothes were outrageously expensive for what they were, and just not for me. Not now anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm not sure if Stitch Fix is for me or not. I'm in the same boat as you - it's more expensive than what I really want to pay, unless I end up loving it, and the odds of really loving what they send me enough to spend that kind of money just seem low to me? I've thought about trying it when I buy spring clothes, but I just don't know. I like your idea of trying it for 3 months before making a final call. The dress you kept is perfect though! Way to score a deal and yes I would totally take that to Europe!

  30. What time of year are you heading to Paris/Dublin? I reckon you could make the dress work (with thick tights, boots and a nice jumper as another commenter suggested) and just LOOK at it, it screams Paris! I really like the sound of Stitch Fix, as I am generally poor at the whole shopping thing. I wish we had something like it in the UK. Here's hoping...

  31. Ooh, love the try-ons and reviews in this post! I have not done stitch fix because I need to choose things for myself. Need. But the dress you kept is really cute. As for whether it's a good idea for Paris & Dublin, I can only be jealous that you have this difficult decision to make because I've never been to either of those cities!

  32. Loved your review! I'm still not 100% sold on Stitch Fix, mostly because I like to shop and this would take that fun out of that haha. I do really love that striped dress though - so versatile and hopefully you'll get the items you want soon!

    ReplyDelete
  33. that dress is super cute! I used to do stitch fix, and have gotten some really lovely items from them, but much like you its a little more money than I would usually like to spend and after a few bad fixes in a row I called it off. I ended up keeping whatever was cheapest from those bad fixes so I wouldn't lose my money but I didn't like having to keep something I didn't love and adding it to my already overflowing closet. I also don't feel that stitch fix is as personalized as they make it seem.
I know there are limitations but when I made a special request for a dress they never sent it and they didn't even acknowledge my request until months later.Whats more I kept a pair of $90 (!!!) pants and the seam ripped after 3 wears.

I think its a fun thing to try but not a long term way to shop... at least not for me.

  34. The dress you kept is SO cute! And if you haven't fixed it already the pen mark, try hair spray! ;)

  35. I guess I am late to the party because I've never heard of this before! Sounds pretty cool though! Definitely agree with what you kept! That dress is so adorable on you! Love it! Have a great weekend!

  37. I loooove the dress you kept! It's super cute and so flattering on you. Win! Bummer about some of the other pieces though, that green dress is so cute.. but I have to agree, at those price points, it needs to fit perfectly and I need to be in love with it. Glad you got something good out of the experience :) and I say yes, definitely take this to Europe!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think you made the right choice- Love that dress and it's SUPER flattering on you!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I haven't tried it because I live in Switzerland and I'm plus-sized anyway so that wouldn't fly for me, but that's kind of a blessing because otherwise I would be all over all these monthly subscriptions! So dangerous ;-)

I love, love, love the striped dress! I have something very similar, it's from a British retailer called Dorothy Perkins. I LOVE skater dresses, they are so adorable without being overly girly.
I too would have sent back the other items, definitely overpriced.
Though I wanted to say, about the green dress: I am not a girly girl, and I don't attend a lot of cocktail parties, but I love wearing chiffon and other light dresses in the fall and winter, with opaque tights, boots, and a cardi (and often a scarf). I love the difference in texture and I like to take girly dresses down a peg on the girly scale ;-)

  40. I mean... that striped dress is gorgeous on you!!!The fit and style and everything. You definitely made the right choice in keeping it. I have a Dolman top similar to the grey and never wear it because of the same reason. I dunno I just dont think the style is for me at this point. P.S I actually love the green dress on you but I am a firm believer in you have to feel confident in something you wear. So if you didnt like it then yup you made the right call!

    ReplyDelete
  41. good honest review! i love the dress that you kept! it looks like it fits you like a glove! i would've sent the other back too.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Huh, never even heard of this before. I do like the striped dress, but those stripes in front would drive me insane not lining up right. I would wear the green dress with the long chain. That's more me :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, I love that dress you kept - I wear dresses like that a lot with either sandals or boots (cowboy, of course). I would definitely take that on your trip - you can easily through on a denim jacket or something!!! I keep thinking about trying Stitch Fix - love that you can set the day stuff comes.

    ReplyDelete
  44. You definitely picked the best dress! I love the polka dotted top, but I would never be able to justify it at that price. That's a slight problem the "fixes." Some things are good deals, but other things seem wildly overpriced--like you could pick that up at TJ Maxx for $20. When I mark things as way too expensive, they adjust the next box, but then jack back up the next box.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes take it to Europe!!! Throw some leggings and boots with that and boom, super styling. Stitch fix customer service is awesome. So glad they gave you that discount! Love that dress you kept and am so excited you got a good first box!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh wow!! I'm super in love with your fit and flare striped sleeved dress!! It's perfection, and quite hard to find a for and flare with the longer sleeves! I have one but the sleeves are short but I still love it:) I'd definitely be taking that dress to Europe! I seriously can't imagine anything that says Parisian Chic as much as a striped dress and a red lip!

  47. Ohhhhhh, geez! I've heard of this subscription box and thought about signing up since I have zero baby-free time to shop, but I have to agree with you - those prices are more than I like to pay! I LOVE the dress you kept (your waist looks TINY) and I also love the grey t-shit. But dang. I think I'm cheap because those prices seem a bit high.

Unless I can specify height, and they only send me clothes for tall ladies - can I do that?! Because that's worth it's weight in gold.

  48. I love the dress you kept! Bummer about the necklace... it looks cute!

  52. I'm struggling with Stitch Fix. I don't think I would ever pay that much money for the items that they give you. I think I should try it once but I'm not sure if I'll love it. If I try it I'll use your referral link!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hmm it sounds expensive. I like the green dress on you a lot! The striped one does seem more you though. I am probably way too picky for this lol. xo

  54. I've seen Stitch Fix being mentioned but didn't know what it was. Great concept, but I think I'd get tired of sending stuff back?! I don't know. That last dress you kept is super cute. Def take it to Europe. It looks like it would pack well.

  55. I'd never heard of Stitch Fix before now! It sounds like a good option if you've got a bit of money free for clothes. It's a shame that green dress didn't fit the way you wanted -- that looks like a great color for you!
