Books Lately

If you've come to my blog today to check out the many books I read this month.... you've come to the wrong place. Sometimes even self proclaimed bookworms need some time off. I read very little this month. 3 books total. The last 2 of a series, and The Martian.

The Jessica Darling Series - Megan McCafferty - 5 Stars overall

I finally finished this series this month. I devoured the first 3 and then stalled on the 4th. I really, really, really loved the first 2 and the 3rd was very good, but something about the 4th & 5th books were hard to get into and I felt less connected to Jessica than I had before.. I really didn't like the switch to 3rd person in the 5th book even though the author explains why, I just dislike when they do that. However - I still recommend the series as a whole and overall it left me with warm fuzzies, and that's what matters.

The Martian - Andy Weir - 5 Stars

I am so surprised by how much I LOVED this book. It was interesting, well written and funny - so funny. I laughed, and you better believe I cried like a little girl. I had very low expectations because I thought it would be one of those 'best books' that everyone loved but me, but I was so wrong. I loved Mark's personality - he is such a good character. I think this is a book you can enjoy even with zero interest in science / math - not that I am not interested, I'm just not smart enough to absorb everything he was talking about. I did listen to it, and I think that helped me understand it better and get more into it. I also bugged KC a bazillion times until he started reading it. He totally enjoyed it and read it super fast as well. AND they are making it in to a movie, and the casting seems pretty on point in my humble opinion. Check it out!!

Linking up with Jana & Steph for show us your books! Also with Rebecca for her winter reading challenge.

It's ok though - if I could recommend one book to everyone this year, it would be The Martian. Seriously, check it out.

  2. I have been so bad this year and I've only read one book so far. I've got a list about a mile long of books I want to read I just haven't downloaded them yet. Love getting new book ideas from you though!

  4. I don't like when an author changes the tone or way of telling mid-way through a series but sometimes it can work. Sounds like an overall good series though.

  5. Ok, going to check out the Martian as soon as I am done catching up with your blog :-) Thanks for the recommendation!

  6. I keep hearing about The Martian on Book Riot so I'm so glad you liked it & I can't wait to read it! (Yes, we all need a break!)

  7. The Martian sounds interesting - adding it to my Goodreads list! (And it's ok that you only read 3 books. 3 would be a pretty satisfying month for me, literature-wise.)

  8. I have a list of books I want to read. So far right now my challenge is to read 20 books this year. I'm almost done with "the best of me". Are you on Goodreads?

  9. Three books is more than me! I'm glad you posted this just because it's a reminder to me to finish the ONE book per month goal I set for myself. :) Plus, once I finish my current book I can go onto read some of the FUN fiction books you've recommended in the past! I'm so ready for light & fluffy again.

  11. She switched to third person? WHYYYYY. Regardless, I'll press on.

I think I'll add The Martian to my list.

  12. YES! I'm so happy to hear that you loved The Martian! I'm actually reading that one right now! I've only just started it so I was hoping it was going to be a good one. I really love the main character already.

  13. That's kind of weird to switch to third person in the middle! But I would still like to read that series, will be looking for it on my Kindle!

  14. Im kindle buying the Jessica Darling series this week to read in the night on a work trip I have coming up. I haven't read a lot this month either. Work and the carnival season here, life and heck just sleep took priority. Have a great day Kris!

  15. I love hearing your recs girl! I have a little running list of them for after the wedding that I can't wait to tackle!

  16. I'd say you did pretty well in the book department. 3 books on top of a normal busy lifestyle is still great! I'm struggling to get all my books in for some reason too lately. I've been eyeing the jessica darling series for a while and might have to give it a try!

  17. OK - I'm sold... heading to add The Martian to my list right now! :) I've never even heard of it before!
Thanks again for linking up! :)

  18. I really want to read the Martian, but I keep picking up other books first. My to-read list is endless.
One of the most appealing aspects of immortality would be the extra time to read. :)

  19. Your "I read nothing this month" month would be my "all I did this month is read" month! haha. What's next after the obvious Pride and Prejudice birthday read?

  20. Always love a good book review! Going to have to check these out!

  21. Do you PROMISE I can enjoy this book with less than zero interest in math, and minimal interest in science, and less than zero interest in sci-fi stuff? If you do, then I'm in. I'm still looking for a new book to read :)

  22. I only read one book this month- way to go! I need to look into these reads!

  23. I will have to check this one out. :) I know what you mean though, I read a lot in January but I know that won't happen this month because I'm taking a couple of classes and won't have much time :( boo!

  24. Okay I think my comment got eaten and that makes me really sad because it was long. ANYWAY. Long story short, I think the reason I loved that PF switched to third person is because I read each book as it was published, so by the time book 5 came out, I had been waiting yeaaaaars to hear SOMETHING from Marcus's POV. Ya know? I was like in the same boat as Jess — just DYING to hear something from Marcus, some explanation, and I felt like I'd waited a lifetime to get a look inside his mind. I think that made the difference. Anyway, I'm glad I convinced you to read them and that at least you loved 1 and 2 as much as I did :)

  25. hahaha...3 books total. THAT is a lot for me!!!! I think the most I finish is one book total in a month! :D

  26. I felt exactly the same way about the Jessica Darling books. The first 2 are awesome ("You, yes, you" gets me EVERY flippin time) and the 3rd is good, but I wasn't as thrilled with the last two. My favorite thing about the series was hearing Jessica's thoughts in her voice, so the switch to third person kinda ruined things for me :/

  27. I keep seeing that Jessica Darling series, I might just need to give them a try!!

  28. I think I read like 3 books last YEAR if that makes you feel any better! I had never heard of The Martian but it sounds really interesting!

  29. You are doing way better than I am in the book reading department! I've never heard of The Martian, but I will have to look into it for my next read!

  30. That's awesome. I haven't read either book/set. It's good to know you can love Martian without science/math love. I have very little of that as well. :) I read one book in January (but was WAY busy, 2 trips, lots of plans) yikes. I am partway through a second for the year, which judging by last year is pretty darn good for me! :) haha XO -Alexandra

  31. I just recommended The Martian to my husband because you're the third person to mention it today and I don't like those kinds of books but he definitely does. Although it's good to know you don't have to like science to enjoy it. Maybe I'll consider it.

And 6 books in a month is still a lot :)

  32. Hmm...I've never heard of The Marian but I'm going to download it on my Nook and check it out!!

  33. A good friend of mine (who is also in our book challenge) is encouraging me to read The Martian. Looks like bonus round material to me.........

  34. I love that Megan McCafferty series! I have Jessica Darling's It List on my Kindle to read one of these days. I'm adding The Martian to my to-read list!

  35. Adding The Martian to my list, I need a book that makes me laugh!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yesss, so glad you loved those books! I agree the first three were definitely the best, but you still have to love the last two because it's still Jessica and all of her brilliance. I've never heard of The Martian though I know the cover looks familiar. If I'm not usually a big fantasy or science fiction fan do you think I'd still like it?

  37. Ok, I'll have to read The Martian. I keep hearing people say it's good, but I've been on the fence if it's right for me or not. But I'm going to trust you on this one ;)

  38. I still need to get the Jessica Darking series!! They sound like my kind of books!

  39. I love when I find a series that I can devour. Sometimes there are writers/series that need breaks, but I love when I can discover something and just read, read, read!
(Switching narration types mid series does sound a little different. Like, I was listening to a series almost non stop on audio and then out of no where, they started adding sound effects and music!!!)

  41. I am really interested in reading the Martian...definitely adding it to my must-read list!

  42. LOL You only read two books. That is about all I can read in a month...maybe three. I will have to add the Martian to my list because it sounds interesting and different.

  43. I really like the sound of The Martian!

I've just finished reading The Night Circus (years after everyone else) and I LOVED it!!

  44. I've had those months where I read almost nothing! That's cool you and KC both enjoyed the book. I'll have to check it out and see if any of my other friends want to read it with me. Most of them aren't all into the romance like I am, lol.

  45. I hadn't even heard of the Martian yet. Clearly need to read that one... and I never read the Jessica Darling series like almost everyone else I knew did in high school/college, so clearly I need to give those a try too!
