January Shopping

Ok. First month of 2015 and my new shopping goals. I originally wanted to do a no shopping month for January (come onnnnnn it's on my 30 before 30) but it didn't quite work out..

I'm not gonna lie. I did not do well. I did the opposite of well. But.. it's ok. I am 99% sure that once I get my 'capsule-ish' wardrobes completed and in rotation I won't need anything else. I did buy a bunch of pants from Loft, but sadly most of them didn't fit / weren't long enough.

Here's what I got:

1 - J Crew Factory houndstooth top

2 - J Crew Factory polka dot top - sold out, similar from Target
3 - Loft popover sweater
4 - Loft lace tank
5 - Aldo figode booties
6 - Loft colour block top
7 - Loft layering tee
8 - Express Chunky Cover Up
9 - Loft teardrop necklace
10 - Loft accordion necklace
11 - Express Romper - sold out
12 - Loft tall pindot cuffed ankle pants (normal length)
13 - Erin Motz One Bad Yogi Tank
14 - Aldo graelia flats
15 - Express Barcelona Cami
16 - Loft tall quilted slim ankle pants (normal length)

I am really happy with all of my purchases. The express cardigan, the loft layering tee, the J Crew polka dot top and the figode booties are my favourites though - seriously, the booties are so comfortable, I am gonna wear the shit out of the cardi, the polka dot top is perfect for work and the layering tee is so versatile.

Outfit one: cardigan / layering tee / old navy jeans / bow flats
Outfit two: polka dot top / pants from Target (old and altered)
Outfit three: cardigan / sleeveless blouse (old) / nobody jeans (old) / figode booties

I also bought a little something something off Etsy that I just had to have when I saw it - it made me cry happy tears when I saw it and I can't wait to show you all.

So how did I do with my goals?

1. No impulse shopping.

Fail. I made all purchases the same day that I put them in my cart. The whole sale frenzy is what caused me to go well over budget and put other things in my cart to get free shipping, which is what I am trying to get away from.

2. No more than $100 a month.
I think it's pretty obvious I went over $100 - unless I got everything for a mega steal. I'm pretty embarrassed about the number, so I'm not sharing it - I did write it in my planner so I will remember and not do it again.

3. No more cheap clothes that don't last.
I think Loft, Express and J Crew make pretty good quality clothes and I have never had an issue with their products. I've bought shoes from Aldo before with no issues. I hope Erin Motz's tank doesn't let me down.

4. No more getting sucked in by other bloggers.
Complete and utter fail. I bought a few of my items after seeing them on Tracy, though I definitely threw my own things in there as well. Then I bought the cardi after seeing it on Gina, and the boots after seeing them on Pamela and after Katie shared they were on sale.. It's no-one's fault but my own though, I'm the one who clicked checkout.

5. Fill holes in my closet rather than create new spots.
Just okay. I needed new work tops and new work pants. I didn't need necklaces but I think the ones I bought will actually get wear, unlike my cheapy ones that I don't love. I really didn't need the tank tops but I know I'll wear them - and the romper is my Derby outfit so special occasions... But I'd say it was like 50/50 needs vs wants this month.

6. Buy more house stuff, but no more projects until previous projects are done.
The thing I got off Etsy will be for the house, but it's something small. We got 2 'latte' mugs (set of 4 here) from Target - but KC is the one who said we should buy them so it doesn't count because that never happens. We also worked on one of my projects, it's not finished but that did cost a bit of money as well.

Ok. So I'd say a solid fail for the month budget wise - I'm happy with all my purchases but not with how much I spent. Not to mention the other stuff I'm not tracking - makeup, eating out, birthday gifts - these are all things that should be tracked and budgeted for and I will get there one day. Regardless of what I got, it's not ok that I went so over budget. Way to start the year right Kristen.

At the end of the day, if we don't go to Europe or buy the pretty house things that I want.. it's my fault. Not only that, I'm the one who wants to do these things, and I am sabotaging myself. KC couldn't care less about home decor or a trip to Europe - it's me, and if we aren't able to, I am the one to blame.

Hopefully February will be better, budget wise. I have my first Stitch Fix planned, but other than that I am going to try really hard not to buy anything. So stop posting cute outfits, guys! Just kidding. Need to work on my willpower. It's my issue, no-one elses.

  1. I love the Barcelona cami and the cardigans! Next month will be better...January also has such good sales and its so easy to get sucked into them. Also, February is shorter so its just less time to spend money!

  2. I love that polka dot top! You sound like my sister lol she never budgets and buys so many things each month, I on the other hand haven't been shopping once this month for clothes. My "secret" is that I avoid the stores, I don't look at clothes when I go to target for groceries and If I go to the mall I just stay in the food court and I don't shop online either... Sometimes I will go on a store website and fill up the shopping cart but then I see how much the total is and I'm like "ehhhhhhh" and I exit out.

  3. I'm happy your posted this to keep yourself accountable, but also so mad that you did because I want all these things (or at least the ones I don't already own) haha! Love the cardigans - may have to bookmark them for future purchases. I know what you mean though, I spent a ton the last couple of months but I totally agree with what you said, after I bought all those things I was happy with my capsule and stopped feeling like I needed to buy more. You got a bunch of great stuff this month, no worries!

  4. Ooh, I like that cardigan a lot! I'm a big fan of Stitch Fix - good luck with your first one! I'm going to attempt to do a semi-no-spend February but I'm not sure I'll stick to it what with the after V-day chocolate sales and such. ;)

  5. You got some GREAT stuff! I am so excited for you to wear an enjoy all of it! I do think at the beginning of a season (or capsule in your case) it's natural to spend a little to build your base. Almost of these pieces look versatile (except special occasion items, of course!) so I think if you plan your outfits rights, you can taper off on shopping. (Do you have a capsule plan? Please share it!)

  6. All those things are so pretty! It's making me want to shop! I'm going through a phase of 'sweating my assets' (perhaps unfortunate choice of phrase under the circumstances) and wearing all my not-quite-right clothes until they fall apart. Then I'm going to buy a capsule wardrobe and be done with it. This may be wholly unrealistic but I'm terrible at fashion so denial is my friend for now!

  7. I love everything! When Katie posted about those booties I almost got them but convinced myself I didn't need them, but seeing them with your outfits I want them all over again! I'm trying to do a no-buy in February so I guess I would need to hurry and order them today, haha :) I ordered a few pants from Loft a few weeks ago and had to return them all too- which ended up being kind of a relief I guess.

  9. I spend so much of money on travel that I rarely go shopping! But I will live through those beautiful boots that you got! I agree with you about buying clothes that will last. I have this (overpriced) dress from Anthropolgie from about 4 or 5 years ago that STILL looks good as new. Honestly, I can say the price was worth it!

  10. Oh my gosh I need a no shopping month... Let me tell you, having a baby makes you spend way,way too much money on adorable tiny baby outfits.

  11. I will say, I totally love everything you got and staple items that will last is an investment really ;) don't listen to me, I'm such an enabler...February has less days so you are bound to do so much better!!

  12. The cardigan and booties are perfect! I just love them! I was thinking of doing to no shopping thing in January too but I just didn't want to make a restriction on myself haha (poor excuse I know!). I didn't do badly with my shopping though - but I spent loads in December so this month was all about not going near the shops haha. At least you bought quality items that you'll get heaps of wear from!

  13. A lot of cute stuff!! I'm glad that it doesn't bother KC - that is how my husband has always been about my shopping and it makes life easier for sure since we don't fight about that kind of thing.

  15. Hey, at least you fessed up! I bought a few things from J.Crew Factory and a couple pairs of leggings but it was my birthday month and I used gift money for it all.
Also, I'm really considering a flat out spending freeze for maybe March…

  16. Everything you bought is gorgeous and I love it, so at least there's that ;) I know your frustration though. It's one thing to want to set and follow the limits you set for yourself, but it's hard to do. And it can be really tempting to beat yourself up about it after the fact, especially when there's something on the line. Writing out a budget spreadsheet and tracking every single penny spent really helped me tremendously and I don't think I've really spent any money in a while that I've kicked myself for afterward. (Not trying to sound high and mighty or anything; I wasn't always this way. My point was just that if I could learn to control my spending, I have nothing but belief that you can meet your financial goals too!)
Anything I can do to help you out in February, let me know, as always. Every time you get twitch for online shopping just text me instead ;) I also have some psych-myself-out-of-purchase tactics for when it's a total want and not at all a need that I'm happy to share if ya want :) Anyway, proud of you for fessing up and being brutally honest!

  17. Love the polka dot blouse! :) I told myself I'd spend less in 2015, but so far, it's been the highest spend month in awhile. UGH!

  18. I NEED that houndstooth top!!! That would be the perfect game day top for me! I have that gray lace tank from Loft and just love it! It pairs so well with things and is cute on it's own. I am in love with those two longer cardigans in your pictures too!! I would say you have some great finds. I am working on really loving my wardrobe and getting rid of the things that make me feel bad, dont fit or I just haven't worn in over a year. It is a struggle because as soon as I make the decision to purge, all of a sudden I think I am going to need everything. Haha!

  19. Well, I love those wedge booties! When I went shopping last week, that's what I was after. Then bought some hipster s**t. Oops! And wouldn't you know, I'm totally with you - everyone gets cute stuff from Loft, and I have yet to find anything that fits, specifically, that's long enough. Super cute stuff! But if they could add a few inches to their inseams and sleeves, girls like us would be super grateful :)

  20. Love that chunky cover up! I have a hard time with being influenced by other bloggers too, like now I'll probably go buy that chunky cover up! ;-)

  21. That sucks that you went over your budget, but the clothes look great on you! I also did not do the best job in January as far as saving money is concerned. :/

  22. Love your goals and picks!! Love Loft and JCrew! I have that polka shirt...love it!! I'm totally going to live vicariously through you because I'm set a goal to not buy clothing this year! Except of course the essentials (bras, undies, tanks) I made it through January! LOL

  23. Although you went over your budget You didnt do too bad! Love number 8 cardigan and number 12 and 16 would be perfect for me for work! Love those slacks. You did well and your goals are realistic and doable! Also you look hot girlie!

  24. Not shopping is so difficult. I have definitely been doing better. But still not great... :) I love the things you found. I am doing an IG challenge this month that gives you an outfit prompt and you go create an outfit that fits it... you aren't supposed to shop. Hoping this helps open up my closet to me. :) SO easy to feel stuck in a rut. Good luck in Feb! XO -Alexandra

  25. Those booties are adorable. I have no will power either but I am working on it. Hope February is better for your budget!

  26. Well it's officially a new month so all that shopping is in the past! And you made some amazing purchases that will last, so it's totally OK! I thought I recognized that Loft popover sweater from Tracy's capsule. I might be wrong about that though. I love the cardigans. I wear my cardigans all the time and am always looking for a new one that I can get lots of wear out of. I've been looking at getting some of the bad yogi apparel. You'll have to let me know how it stands up!

  27. At least you got some cute stuff!!! It can be so hard not to buy new stuff!!! I have done pretty good in Indonesia, because I don't have room to take back in my suitcase lol. When I'm back in the US though all my money goes to Anthro....

  30. Ohh so many great things girl! I have those Aldo booties and I seriously live in them! Love that floral cami top too! So pretty! I need to find some nice pants for work. Unfortunately being short means they're all WAY too long :( Even the "short" ones are too long on me. #shortgirlproblems

  31. Love the polka dots and lace! So pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  32. You can do this girl! I think Express is pretty good quality; especially the material they used for their pants. I have a hard time keeping myself from spending any money. It is a pretty tough thing to do.

  33. You have THE cutest clothes! I swear I need a new wardrobe - having baby changed my body forever - but all I do is buy baby clothes now haha

    ReplyDelete
  34. I had the same goal and failed the same way. Oops! Better luck this month, right? :)

I love everything you picked out!

  35. I love what you got, and look, now you don't need to buy that stuff again. Just work on filling holes.

I like your idea of sticking to $100 a month.

  36. Its a tough time to not shop - all the winter stuff on clearance! My favorite time to buy!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have trouble making myself budget. I love organizing my budget and setting it all up, but then when I go to make actual purchases, I don't pay any attention to it. I don't necessarily have a shopping "addiction" but I do have a lack of willpower, and one of the things that helps is to make it harder for myself to buy things.

For example, if you have stores that keep your credit card on file, delete your card info and make yourself enter it every time you buy something. You could also set your password to your shopping websites to something super "secure," (aka that you won't remember, like a bunch of numbers and symbols) write it on a piece of paper, and then tuck that away in a filing cabinet or something, so that you have all that extra time to think about what you're doing before hitting "checkout."

That being said, the encapsulated wardrobe sounds like a good idea, too. I hope it works for you!

  38. Adorable houndstooth top! And you know how I feel about those wedges - totally worth whatever you paid ;)

  39. Love #8, 15 and both the work pants. I'm always looking for some cute but comfortable work pants!! You did well (at shopping, that is)!!

  40. I'm borderline obsessed with those Aldo booties...

  41. I'm in love with #3 and #5!

I'm a reformed shopaholic. I was addicted. I'm still an addict (you know, it's always something I'm going to be fighting). I'm not belittling addicts of alcohol or gambling or drugs. Truly, I got myself into a terrible amount of credit card debt because of my addiction. I would buy when I was happy. I would buy when I was depressed. I would charge, charge, charge without having the money to pay for the things I was charging.

It was easier on me when I moved to Australia because the prices are SO different. I can't bring myself to pay for some things that I know I could buy in the US for half, or a third, or a quarter of the price.

  42. It's all really great stuff though! That cami with those booties looks awesome! Something I heard this past weekend was "grace not guilt". Don't beat yourself up too much!

  46. I love everything that you bought! You look great in those outfits! I have to stop clicking on stuff in blogs as well. I spend way too much since I've been blogging.

  47. I hope you still get to take your trip to Europe and buy the home stuff you want! Baby steps. I know I suck when it comes to not buying something I think is amazing when it's right in front of me. But hey, at least you'll have on cute outfits while you're working on your budget ;)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well I love everything you got and think you did good - hopefully you'll make up for it this month and it will even out :)
