Happy Birthday Pride & Prejudice!

Hello, my name is Kristen and I've got a problem.

Well, I probably have 99, but this is definitely one.

I am a hoarder. Of Pride & Prejudice books. This spills over into other Austens, and sequels and variations as well.

And what do we do with problems in blogland? We share them. And I also wanted to let you all know that 202 years ago today (!!) Pride & Prejudice was published. Isn't that amazing?

These are my two favourite copies. The one on the left is my oldest copy - almost 10 years old.  I still remember where I bought it - Angus & Robertson in Blacktown. And it was only $8 - that's pretty good for Australia! The one on the right is from Target, I think it was in their $1 section and I bought it on a whim in 2012 - I brought only my kindle when I moved here, thinking it wouldn't be long before I was reunited with my beloved books. These two have definitely been read the most.

The top book in the below photo is perfect for a, ahem, collector like myself - shows a lot of the covers of Austen's books over the years.

The top one is 4 of the books - Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, Emma and Persuasion. If it had Northanger Abbey, it would have all my favourites! It was only $8 I think, and so freaking heavy. The extra pretty one was a fabulous find, if I do say so myself. The yellow copy is the penguin clothbound classics - I will get the entire collection in these, and other classics as well (not just Austen? Gasp!).

I love the annotated version in the photo below - it's my favourite to just grab and peruse for hours. The one below is Jane Austen's complete novels, a gift from my bestie last christmas.

The green copy in the photo below is the 200th Anniversary edition, it was only $5 so how could I say no. The one next to it is the manga version, KC got it for me last christmas. The one on the end is my oldest, published in 1961.

The first book in the second row in the below photo is the lizzie bennet diaries edition, and the Emma next to it was another gift from my bestie last christmas. It has a bunch of quotes on it, it's so pretty I definitely want to see if I can find a P&P in the same collection.

I bought the BBC version in London in 2007. I love the idea of collecting them on my travels.

My dream copy would be the White's Fine edition, unfortunately they went out of business and you'd think the pages are made of gold because they are like $300. Just putting it out there, if anyone ever sees one in a used bookstore and it's reasonably priced.... I would love you forever (and pay you back)! But other than that, I am trying very hard not to buy any more copies - even I can see I'm running out of room it's getting a bit ridiculous.

You know what they say about hoarders, if you can carry your whole collection, it's not a problem.*

Oops. Well, on a scale from one to crazy, I would say I'm at least a little nuts. And now I want to read Pride & Prejudice, the only problem is - which one?

*totally made that up.

  3. I totally agree that you have a problem, and I love Jane Austen and her books nearly as much as you do. :)

I was thinking about grabbing the Austen books in that pink Emma version the next time I saw them at Aldi. I think that cover feels amazing and it is one of my favourites, I picked it up and held it, but I did not buy it even though I wanted to.. :) I think P&P was purple or teal.

I have them on my tablet and I love that, I'm not sure I'll be going back to paper books anytime soon. However, I do think I will try and hunt down some of the books mentioned within the books to read.

Lately Mansfield Park has been the most read of the Austen books here, I'm mid-Persuasion now. I'll be reading them a lot over the coming months because I'm going back to school and books I have not read keep me up at night. :)

  7. I've just recently gotten comfortable with the idea of buying multiple copies of one book. I had so many books that I felt like I should keep any extra room for books I didn't already have. But as you've demonstrated, there are so many beautifully designed covers out there! I would go into a book store and pick one up, put it back b/c I already have the book, but later on end up pining for the copy I saw in the store. Now, I just go ahead and buy the ones I really love. They're art!

  47. Eeeeeeeeeeeep! So many books, and I love it! I just bought my very first copy of P&P this past weekend at an Australia Day book sale for only $5. I've never read it, but always meant to do it. You've inspired me.

My fave would have to be the one that looks like a watercolor painting of a girl reading in the 7th picture posted.

First of all, how did I miss p & p's birthday? SAD. Secondly, I am so glad i'm not the only person who buys multiple copies of that book just for the covers? I have some of the ones you do and some different, but I only have like 5. Gotta up my game! :D And lastly....I also love that Annotated version. It's so fun.

  50. That last photo of you is adorable! Have you been to the Jane Austen museum in Bath? It's a house she used to live in with her family. I was geekin' out there :D

  54. I finally saw an annotated copy, it was Northanger Abby but my my it was beautiful! I love footnotes and side bars... and annotations... :) I also love duplicate copies of favorite novels. I only have 3 of Jane Eyre so far... but it's fun to collect them. In general vintage copies of classics are great! So fun to see your collection! XO -Alexandra
