Happy Australia Day!

Guess what today is?! Australia Day! Well technically yesterday but whatever. So I wanted to share some useless but fun info about my awesome home.

Australia is the only nation in the world to cover a whole continent.

It consists of six states; New South Wales (NSW), Victoria (VIC), Tasmania (TAS), Queensland (QLD), South Australia (SA) and Western Australia (WA) and two territories; the Northern Territory (NT) and the tiny Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

I was born in VIC and lived in NSW almost all my life.

via

The ACT / Canberra was selected as the capital because Sydney and Melbourne could not stop arguing which city should be the capital of Australia.

No part of Australia is more than 1000 km (620 miles) from the ocean and a beach. And something like 85% of the people live closer to the coast (within 50km) than the outback.

via

I think there is a misconception that it doesn't get cold or snow in Australia. I am from somewhere that it doesn't snow, and the coldest it gets is 40 something. But the Australian Alps, or Snowy Mountains as they are also known, receive more snow than Switzerland.

via
Australia was the second country in the world to allow women to vote (New Zealand was first).

If you visited one new beach in Australia every day, it would take over 27 years to see them all.

via
Per capita, Australians spend more money on gambling than any other nation.

Kangaroos and emus cannot walk backward, one of the reasons that they’re on the Australian coat of arms.
via
This is our flag:

via
But our colours are green and gold. Meaning, when you are supporting Aus (world cup, Australia day, Olympics etc) you wear green & gold.
via
The stars on our flag are known as the Southern Cross and is the most popular tattoo amongst bogans (like rednecks, only not) and I completely made that fact up.

We had a Prime Minister (Bob Hawke) set a world record for sculling 2.5 pints of beer in 11 seconds. Ok, he wasn't PM at the time, but c'mon Obama - your turn!

In Australia, it is illegal to walk on the right-hand side of a footpath.

Uh, what? I seriously did not know this. Sure, we all automatically go to the left just like you go to the right. But damn now I'm scared to walk on the right hand side!

Oh and this :)

Have a beer to celebrate Australia today!

  1. Australia is on my travel bucket list, it's right at the top... I would love to go there one day. How funny that it's illegal to walk on the right side of a walkway, seriously the USA needs that law bc people think they own the sidewalk and walk right in the middle! So annoying -_-

  2. happy australia day! i shall have a meat pie to honor it. i so easily got in the habit of walking to the left that 5 years later i still catch myself doing that!

  3. Happy Australia Day!! Definitely on my bucket list. My boyfriend spent 5 weeks touring Australia and New Zealand when we first started dating and he loved it. That is a crazy amount of beaches! Sounds like my kind of place. At least I won't have to worry about my boyfriend getting arrested on any footpaths in Australia. He notoriously goes to the left even though everyone here goes to the right and it drives me crazy on our walks haha

  5. Happy Australia day! Now I feel like I will need to have a beer, just because you told me to!
There are some quite interesting facts here - Emu's can't walk backwards? And also, what is the difference between a territory and a state? Is it something to do with how they are governed?

  11. Happy Australia Day! I just learned so much-- how cool would it be to go beach hopping around the entire country (or continent, haha), even if it took so long :)

  12. Happy Australia Day!!! I believe that we shouldn't have to work today.

I was born in VIC too :)

Also, I believe we had a PM who went for a swim by himself one day and was never found again.

  15. Fun to read this!! I've always wanted to go to Australia!! The first year Chris and I were married he came home and said, "There's a trip to Australia and I got picked." Great - when do we leave???? It was in less than 2 weeks and I didn't even have a passport. He went, I stayed in KS:(
He loved everything about the trip!!!

  17. Happy Australia Day! I can definitely get behind the green and gold! (Those were my university colors). I learned something new about Australia yesterday-that some states do daylight savings while others don't so time differences can be in half hour increments. I thought that was super interesting. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Definitely learned something new today! I had no idea about how much snow you got there and thanks for clarifying about the colors I actually did question that before. Happy Australia day!!!!

  19. One year, I was in Whistler B.C. for Australia Day and it was a crazy party! That's when I knew I really liked that country! :-)

  21. Your prime minister is a straight bad ass! Loved reading this and all the cool facts. Like only being 620 miles from the ocean at any given area is pretty awesome. and I had no idea that emu's and kangaroos can't walk backward...makes sense i guess.

  22. Happy Australia Day!!! I dont think I ever really thought much about it snowing or not, but good to know some of these facts! Especially for my trivia crack habit!

  23. Happy Australia Day!! That is a lot of beaches! Gotta love a PM that can chug a beer! Baller!

  24. I had an Australian friend who HATED the shrimp on a barbie saying! She's was all "where the heck did you all get that idea from?" haha! We also used to really love trying to get her to say the word squirrel. Our "Rs" I guess are a little harder than y'alls so it was always just entertaining when she'd try to throw on a hard r for the word! I had NO IDEA about half of this information so thank you for sharing!! And happy Australia day (do people say that?)

  25. Oh how I love Australia, I would love to live back there again one day! Happy Australia Day!

  26. Happy Australia Day Kristen! Oh how I love this post! I love all your Aussie facts, especially the bogan Southern cross tattoo one haha! And I totally did not know that it was illegal to walk on the right hand side if the foot path...I did that for at least a few months after moving home to Aus - oops! And I have never 'put another shrimp on the barbie' - so funny! Xx

  33. Australia has mountains?! I swear I have an education, but... Never knew that! I think beaches and outback, and then I think about Outback Steakhouse and wonder if y'all like steak a lot or if some idiot American just thought that term was clever? Why do you wear different colors than your flag, but not on certain holidays? Dang, I'd always show up in the wrong color... :)

  34. See you're right! It should've been Miss Australia! haha Happy A-Day! :)

  36. The PM and some beer! That is probably my favorite just after how many beautiful beaches there are. I have wanted to visit but now I think I will bump it up on the list of priorities!

  37. Happy Australia Day!! I seriously did not know about 100% of this stuff! I can't beleieve how most of the population only lives near the beach! How crazy! And it snows?! Mind blown!

  38. I was playing Trivia Crack yesterday and the question was "Which one of these is both a country and a continent?". I didn't know a lot of these things, but I am almost embarrassed to admit I didn't know your colors are green and gold. I had no idea!
    Happy Australia Day, Kristen!

  39. The only thing I knew is the country and continent thing! Love all of these fun facts about your home!

  40. I still haven't made it to the Snowy Mountains (but I want to go). In fact, I still haven't made it to a lot of places that I want to see. I never get tired of ooohhhh-ing and aaaahhhh-ing over the ocean and harbour. Australia really is as pretty as it is in pictures. And, I learned quickly they aren't even called "shrimp"; they're prawns.

  41. Happy Australia day hun!!! I loved this post, I would love to visit there. It just seems so laid back and fun!

  43. This is so fun! My family's actually talking about taking a trip to Australia next winter. It sounds awesome (and scary - so many bugs and snakes and things). One thing I don't understand. Why does not being able to walk backwards mean that the emus and kangaroos go on the crest?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh my goodness! I love this! Poor marsupials. : / Shrimp on the barbee.... haha so funny. We love this movie called Danny Deckchair that's Australian. Have you seen it? Either way they have a pancake brekkie. And I think it's adorable. :) Happy belated Australia day to you! XO -Alexandra

Bahahah @ the Prime Minister... that is awesome!

  46. Useless? No way. The story about the capital and the fighting was hilarious. And what woman doesn't need to know that AUS was the 2nd country to give us that freedom?! I admit, that bit about it being illegal to walk on the right side of the street may also be in my novel. Oh AUS, stealing my scenes! Ha!

  48. I learned a lot about Australia from this post! Didn't know it had states, definitely didn't know the Australian Alps existed, or that Kangaroos and Emus can't walk backwards (o.O)! I think the most important fact I learned was that there's a redneck equivalent in Australia. Yeesh.

  49. Happy Australia Day!
I learned a lot reading this. I never thought about it snowing in Australia...I guess I just figured it was always sunny and beautiful...

  50. All the beaches!! Since I never really wanted to travel I haven't done a lot of research into Australia but I would like to see their beaches! Your #australianproblems were so funny! When I was in London, I didn't know to go to the right or left because people were doing both, so frustrating and if it was a law maybe it would have been easier!

  51. LOL @ Srimp on the barbie...I can imagine how annoying that can get. Hope you had a great Australia day!!
