So I found another book challenge group.. or rather, it found me. I finished the last challenge that I did with Megan in a month, so I thought it would be fun to do another. The rules seem quite similar and the categories were too good to resist. I think they do some bonus rounds as well, fun! It starts in January.
I learned a lot from my first challenge (and second, lets be honest) because I picked books for the sake of picking them and they sucked big hairy book suckingness. So I'm making sure from now on to pick books that are already on my to read list or actually sound good and I'm picking them because I want to read them.
The best part is that I only had to buy one book - the rest were on my kindle or bookshelf waiting for me, and the one I bought was super cheap.
5 points: Read a book, any book that is at least 200 pages long – Dear Mr Knightley by Katherine Reay
10 points: Read a book that begins with the “A”, “An”, or “The” - The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
10 points: Read a book with a two word title – The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult
15 points: Read a book with an animal in the title – Dewey: The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched The World by Vicki Myron
20 points: Read a book that the title begins with the first letter of your name – The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom
20 points: Read a book set in any country in Europe – Atonement by Ian McEwan - you're allowed one re-read and I am 99% sure I read this book in 2007 but it was so long ago, I don't remember it. I think I read it right before I saw the movie whilst I was in London.
25 points: Read a book from the NPR’s guide of great books from 2014 – The Martian by Andy Weir
30 points: Read a book by a favourite author that is not a re-read - Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen - I accidentally clicked 'currently reading' the other day but I haven't started, don't worry I'm no rule breaker.
30 points: Read a book by a comedian or comedic actor – Yes Please by Amy Poehler
35 points: Read a book about science, discovery, or a scientific process – God is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens
Have you read any of these books?
The Kite Runner is one of my favorite books. Ito definitely top 3.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of these! I just looked Dewey up... :'( What a cutie. I wish more libraries had cat mascots. ~Gianni~
ReplyDeleteThanks for your post.
ReplyDeletepoint to point
I hated Atonement. Loved The Storyteller and The Kite Runner although both were difficult/emotional.
ReplyDeleteI've read Atonement and the Kite Runner. I don't really remember Atonement but the Kite Runner was really moving. Jodi Piccoult is one of my favorites though so I'm sure it'll be good!!
ReplyDeleteI'm dying to read Yes, Please! I did enjoy The Kite Runner, but liked A Thousand Splendid Suns more. Good luck with your challenge...you can do it! :)
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm so impressed! I'm still trying to get through my book from a couple of weeks ago!!

I so loved The Kitchen House!!!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Dear Mr. Knightley. It does get a little church-y but I don't think it takes away from the story.
ReplyDeleteAll of these (with the exception of Amy's book) are new to me - I'll be adding some to my library list, thanks for the recs!
ReplyDeleteI loved Atonement! I have never watch the movie, but the book was awesome. And of course, Sense and Sensibility is one of the best books!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like such a good one! I still can't believe you did the other one so fast! I can't wait to hear what you think of some of these since I haven't read any of them! I didn't do the last one even though I did make my list, but I'm looking forward to the next one. I'm thinking I might try the author a-z challenge for 2015 maybe?
ReplyDeleteI am still struggling through the last challenge. I tend to not like to be boxed in my rules, I think. I have to many books to read and the challenge is getting in the way. I like that you are using only books from your to read list though. Pretty sweet!
ReplyDeleteOoooh I hope you love The Storyteller! PS I finished Leaving Time and OMG. But anyway. The Storyteller is one of my favorites by far. It was powerful and surprising and incited just about every emotion I could possibly have. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThose challenges sound like a lot of fun! I would totally do that kind of thing. But I already read way too much! haha :-)
ReplyDeleteIve read some of these! The storyteller was good and I liked Atonement (although I know many didnt!) Love these challenges and I should do one sometime.
ReplyDeleteNo judgement gf! I wish I read as much as you! I heard Yes Please is hi-larious! I just love her! I hope you had an amazing christmas and time in NYC!

So fun! I finished Murder on the Orient Express last night, there was finally time to read! Hoping I might be able to sneak one or two more out before the end of the year. Maybe I will do something like this in 2015.... I certainly could use the reminder/motivation to read through the business. :) XO -Alexandra

Damn! I so wanted to sign up for a book challenge for 2015, but I'm not on facebook! (Nor do I ever plan to be) I need to find one around the blogosphere somewhere...
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you find Christopher Hitchens too dense to get through (I do), I really recommend The Disappearing Spoon-- it's about the history of the periodic table :)
DeleteAs if I need another book challenge when I've barely read anything on Megan's challenge, but I may do this one nonetheless :) Kite Runner is heartbreaking but really good, and Atonement is just phenomenal!
ReplyDeleteThis challenge sounds like so much fun! I joined the group, because I just couldn't resist.
ReplyDeleteOut of the ones you listed, I have only read Atonement — read it a few years ago, and didn't enjoy it terribly. It's hard for me to enjoy a book, movie or TV series when I don't like the main character.
Very excited that you're doing another book challenge because it means more book reviews! Yay! haha, I actually had no idea that Jodi Picoult had a book called the Storyteller. Very curious to see what you think of it, and the rest. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Kite Runner is my FAVORITE book. So so good.
ReplyDeleteYes Please!! I need to get my name on the list at the Library for that one. I need to see what else I have left in the other reading challenge. Some of them I didn't have something on my list to fit so I'm struggling wanting to read those. It's definitely a learning curve with some of these challenges! I've heard Jodi Picoult is good just haven't read her yet.
