Save or Splurge
Thanks to Biana for this idea, though I'm so with Amanda, splurge is such a gross word.
Below are the categories:
1. A cocktail dress to wear to a wedding
2. A glass of wine at a restaurant
3. A hotel room
4. A haircut
5. Wild card...you name it!
1. Save - I rarely go to weddings anyway, but I always check out TJ Maxx or Marshalls first, or I might have my heart set on a dress from RTR. Renting a dress isn't super fiscally responsible, but for someone like me who doesn't like to wear the same thing twice it's fun. I probably use them once or twice a year.
2. Save / negligible - I never order wine at a restaurant. If I do get an alcoholic beverage (like a cocktail) I try to get one on the cheaper side. After Sydney prices though, everything is cheap here, so... I normally only ever get one drink, like the other night we went to dinner and I got some fancy blue cocktail and it was sooo yum.
3. Save / Splurge (to me) - I don't like to waste money on the place I am going to sleep. I shouldn't want to spend all my time there. I still want it to be nice, safe and clean. So while to someone else it will look like I'm staying in the cheapest hotel, to me it is a splurge because they are so damn expensive. I won't stay in a seedy 1 star motel 5 miles from where I want to be.. but I will find the cheapest, with the best reviews and best location for our budget. Sometimes we get lucky, like our Honeymoon.
4. Save - And I'm kinda cheating here because one of my best friends just happens to be the best hair stylist in the country, so..... Though it used to be a splurge because of maintaining the blonde and how long it was. I rarely get my hair done anymore. I got it done in October kinda ombre-y, and I'm already itching to have it all one colour again (my natural). What do you think?

5. Save / Splurge (to me) - My wild card is going to be clothes.. exciting I know. I have always been about the cheapest deals, if something was on sale, I'd buy it. But with a closet full of nothing to wear and clothes I don't like.. I'm seriously over that now. I know the Gap and Express etc aren't expensive stores to most people, but for me who almost always buys secondhand or super cheap, they are. However, their clothes tend to last longer and you can get them on super sale, so while they are still a splurge for me, in the end it works out as saving because I'm not wasting money on crappy cheap clothes that don't last.
What's worth a splurge to you?
i splurge on my hair. my hair is wavy, straight, frizzy, thick, coarse, and fine in different spots, so to find someone to be able to manage all of that is worth it.
ReplyDeleteWell aren't you just the frugal one! I am all splurge! It's terrible, but I inherited my mother's finer taste! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI generally try to save on all of these things. And I think a splurge does look different depending in what you're used to. After living in Alaska, we'd go home to PA and buy everything we saw and eat at all the restaurants because it was so "cheap".
ReplyDeleteA splurge is jewelry just because I'm not one to accessorize and it's not something I need for my job. Hotels I like to find a deal but I also know what I like and we made the mistake of saving vs splurging one time and lets just say that people hanging out in lawn chairs at the back should have had us demanding our money back before the next thing went wrong! I love your hair either way, it curls so great!
ReplyDeletei agree with you on most of these! i love RTR for nice dresses for weddings..you really wont want to wear those too many times. I splurge when it comes to my hair just bc it's something that you wear everyday.. and sometimes on clothes (not craaazy splurge but i'm kinda addicted to tieks! and those are pricey). xo jillian - cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteI splurge on my hair to maintain the color (and I like yours both ways...sorry, I'm no help at all!). I've convinced myself that RTR is totally a save since I would be getting a new dress for fancy events anyway, so at least I'm not spending too much and it's not taking up room in my closet when I rent!
ReplyDeleteI splurge mostly on concerts. I'm not much of a clothes girl or getting my hair done all the time girl, but give me a good concert I'll go in a heart beat.
ReplyDeleteI like your hair either way. Both look great.
I splurge on my hair, because I wear it everyday and I'll splurge on a glass of wine when I go out to a nice dinner. It really makes the dinner feel more special, to me.
ReplyDeleteI like your hair both ways, but do what you like the best! {i'm lots of help, hah}
I'm pretty much with you on these. I wish I had known about Rent the Runway a couple years ago because I have several dresses I've bought and worn for different things, but I also don't like to wear the same thing twice.
ReplyDeleteI feel you on the hair. I'm not able to get mine does as often now that I live five hours away from my stylist, but it's kind of been a blessing in disguise because now I'm getting off the blonde train. Too much upkeep and too much money! Last time she did kind of an ombré type thing with my natural color and I want to work more toward my natural color. I really like your hair now but after looking at it next to your natural color I think I like the natural even better!
I splurge on my hair since I don't know any fabulous hairstylists like you do! I love your ombre hair but I felt the same way you did when I got mine done ombre. I wanted it to go back to all one color. I also agree with the hotel... as much as I LOVE staying in a nice room I think it's pointless to spend a ton of money on something I'm barely going to be in!

I really like your ombre color, but I was getting sick of my own. I just chopped a lot of it off! There is a little left but it's mostly my natural color now! Anything I have ever bought from Express has held up so well! xo
ReplyDeleteOooh I like your hair both ways.... That dress is adorable, I agree I rarely splurge on (anything really) clothing... I don't usually get drinks out either unless it is a margarita or a pimm's cup, neither of which tends to be too expensive. I also hate spending lots on hotels. I would rather eat cool places, take home souvenirs.. etc. :) XO -Alexandra

I also consider it a splurge to shop for clothes. Gap and Express are expensive to me too!! :P I usually shop at Ross or TJ Maxx and shop the clearance racks at Target and Kohls. I'm all about saving but I still end up leaving the stores spending $50 so that is definitely splurging since I don't actually *need* these new clothes... if that makes sense! :P

I 'splurge' on clothes that are going to last, but I only shop those stores when they are having a sale! So it's not so bad.
ReplyDeleteYou sound like my kind of girl--I save wherever I can. I do splurge (to me) on various things, but I generally try to save.
ReplyDeleteAlso... I love your hair both ways!
I agree with all your choices. And with clothes I try to mostly save but every now and then something catches my eye and I love it so much I wanna splurge. However, my practical penny-pinching mind takes over and says, how often will you wear it to make it worth it.
ReplyDeleteI have the exact same philosophy as you on all the categories, especially your wildcard. My SIL thinks that Express and Gap, etc. are all everyday stores and I'm over here like I budget to go there!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same on all points. I stay in hotels often for work and band stuff. Who can sleep when you care too scared to get under the cover?
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic post idea. I might do one like it tomorrow, if that's okay! haha I used to be so so so bad with shopping for clothes and splurged so much and had like no self-control when it came to buying expensive clothes. I'm like the opposite now. I still like expensive things but I really don't shop much at all. I don't even have a credit card so I think I've only bought clothes online once. :) I love your ombre but natural is beautiful too! (I know, so unhelpful, sorry... hehe) - I also don't like spending lots on a hotel. I don't travel much or stay in them often but it's not something I'd prefer to spend lots on either.
ReplyDeleteI will spend on bags, makeup, and some jewelry. I save on hotel rooms, clothes, transportation (train over driving/parking to work), and mostly save on shoes. Sometimes not.
ReplyDeleteOoooh I totally love your natural hair color! I like the ombre too, but I'm a sucker for a good one color look! And I agree with all of your points here!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I splurge on everything, lol. I cant think of a category that I am cheap in except alcohol and that is because I dont really like it. I still order champagne though. Haha!
ReplyDeleteI have to say the way you curl your hair is just perfect- I like the ombre look on you, but I think your natural color is so pretty!!! I'm with you - I don't really buy clothes that are cheaply made anymore because they rarely last more than one season!! xo, Biana - BlovedBoston
ReplyDeleteI splurge on yarn... seriously. My husband cringes when I choose a skein that is $25.00 for one skein... & a project takes MULTIPLE skeins. Yikes.
ReplyDeleteHmm I am torn because I like your hair both ways....
ReplyDeleteI splurge on make up, skin care products, shoes and purses. I save on clothes, my hair (I only have it done twice a year maybe three times if I get crazy) and any other way I can!
I really enjoy these, it's interesting to me to see how different we all are :) I always joke because I'm someone who will drop $50 on an eye shadow palette no problem, but I don't think I've ever spent more than like $30-$40 on jeans tops. I am trying to turn this around though, my clothes just keep falling apart and I don't need that makeup!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the dresses. I always check out the discounted stores and I've got luck scoring really expensive looking dresses for $20 instead of paying big bucks. Lucky you having a best friend that can get you dolled up!
ReplyDeleteI almost never get my haircut so I save on that, but I will get a decent hotel if I am staying somewhere nothing crazy but I want it to be comfortable. I like your natural, I feel like the ombre is going away.
ReplyDeleteI love your ombre but your hair is so gorgeous you can get away with anything! After this last big move I seriously have half my closet. I saved all my really nice pieces and parted ways with the cheap/trendy things. Some of my more expensive things have kept up for years so I am tending to gravitate to the better made quality pieces now!
ReplyDeleteI think the only thing I might splurge on here is my hair. My logic?? I finally, by fluke, found a hairdresser who I love and who knows what I want without asking. And she gives killer head massages, so it's a total no brainer.
ReplyDeleteOh man I think these days I definitely splurge on things like hair products, makeup and clothes. Like you said, why buy a bunch of cheap crap that doesn't work or falls apart after a few wears?? If only the hubs understood my logic hahaha.
ReplyDeleteYou're way more responsible than me, hahaha. I wish I was as good at saving. I'm better at it now, but when I do go out or make a trip, I tend to splurge on a glass of wine or a nice hotel because I don't do those things super often. Great food and books are my favorite things to splurge on. Everything else, I'm fine keeping the purse strings tight for.
ReplyDeleteI definitely love the ombre look on you but the upkeep gets so annoying I'm sure. I'm a saver for most things, but not when it comes to drinks out ;)
ReplyDeleteI am with you! I love spending the absolute least while getting the best I can. So I won't stay at a crappy place either but I am not gonna spend a bunch of money on a place whre I only sleep.
ReplyDeleteMost of my friends are already married so if a wedding comes up I like to buy something I can wear again.
I like the ombre but your natural hair color is sooo pretty!
Express is crazy expensive to me. I just over everything in there but I never buy anything. I just can't afford it. And most of the time their clothes don't fit me :-/. My splurge is makeup. I can't help it. I just love good makeup!
ReplyDeleteI'm the same as you in that a lot of the things I think of as pricey or splurges are probably considered cheap to others! We try not to spend too much on hotels either, of course it needs to be clean and safe, but it doesn't have to be super fancy!
ReplyDeletePretty much agree with all of this! My friend use to do my hair and she was amazing too but then she moved, so it has become a splurge :( even though I haven't gotten it done in like forever! I am loving the ombré!! It looks gorg with your curls!

Sometimes I can talk myself into thinking something is splurge-worthy, but it all comes down to my gut. My gut can talk me into or out of any purchase, and I'm trying to listen. Sometimes I start to justify buying something because it's on sale or I think it's cute, but then I start having the "do I need it? What do I need more?" conversation with myself and it usually changes things. And that totally varies based on what my budget looks like that month, if I'm ahead or behind on savings goals, stuff like that. But you definitely did a good job hunting down the details on the RnR hotel so I gotta give you 10 gold stars for that! :)
ReplyDeleteHaha I laughed about the word splurge. What is it about some words? I have a friend whose skin crawls every time someone says the word "moist" haha I'm so bad at getting my hair done. I feel like I'm on top of my game if I go once a year for a trim. I could really use a new hairstyle...actually I don't really even have a hairstyle...maybe in the new year! I splurge on wine and travel. We love taking little weekend road trips that can add up no matter how cheap we try to be. This is such a fun post idea!
ReplyDeleteLove this post idea, although not a fan of the word "splurge" either. I love your hair all one color but Ombre would be totally fun for summer too!
ReplyDeleteBahahahahah... I'm so glad you agree with me on that word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYour hair looks good BOTH ways. AND all blonde, too. I hate you for that.
I'm gonna check out RTR! I'm the same way with wearing dresses to events twice. This is GENIUS!
Ok, I love the ombre look on you, and I don't usually care for that look, so I say keep it! Or go all one color, it's just hair, you can change it again if you don't like it (that's my motto). I am super cheap when it comes to clothes, I get quality over quantity, but I would rather spend my money on something else. I think that last sentenced may have me banned from the blogging world....
ReplyDeleteLove your hair this colour. Also after Sydney prices any alcho is cheap in my book haha. I am guilty of ordering wine though usually by the bottle with friends so its cheaper but still ... I have wine home and its a waste! I love hotels and with the great apps nowadays you can find a good hotel / airbnb place for a reasonable price so worth it in my book!
ReplyDeleteI love the subtle ombre! Obviously because I had a dramatic one for quite awhile. Does your friend work at a salon here in Louisville? As you can tell I have had a horrible time finding someone that I really love when it comes to getting my hair done. I hate spending a lot of money on hotels as well so I typically try to find something nice and on sale also.
ReplyDeleteyou always look fabulous and so does that hair! Gah! I love this post by the way! Agree 100%
ReplyDeleteI save on clothes and hair and have the same philosophy on hotels. We never go top end hotels more mid-range because I don't travel to hang out at the hotel. I don't buy tons and tons of clothes or accessories so I feel like I spend less comparably to someone who shops a lot. I don't dye my hair because it's not grey yet and I don't want to spend the money on it :)
ReplyDeleteooh love this! I always do airbnb and vrbo for trips now instead of hotels, we had an awesome penthouse this weekend right downtown that was cheaper than the hotels!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you did this! I'm with you on the dresses - it's highly unlikely that I'm going to repeat one. I still need to try RTR but I'm terrified that neither of the dresses they send will end up fitting right and then I'm screwed!
ReplyDeleteOoh, this is a really fun post. I don't think I would say I splurge on any of those categories for one-time purchases. But my costs add up to a splurge on some things. For instance I found a bargain hair stylist that I like but I like to go frequently. So I end up spending as much as someone who goes to an expensive stylist just a few times a year.
ReplyDeleteI think I have to agree on most of your choices! Especially with hotels - I rarely pay for hotels actually, usually try to stay with friends, but if I must then I won't stay in a shady place, but will try to find a nice and comfy budget place! And I know I won't help - but I love your hair in both ways! You can pull both off brilliantly :)
ReplyDeleteI agree about the clothing! And I am the same about having a cocktail while dining out! I don't like to spend a fortune on a drink that I could have at home or go buy from the liquor store for a quarter of the price! :) I like your hair as the Ombre look your currently rockin'! :)
