Gift Ideas for everybody-ish.

I have mixed feelings about 'gift ideas' posts. Mainly because I am cheap, and a lot of posts include things I can't afford or don't want to buy for the people in my life.

Don't get me wrong, I love (most of) the people in my life that I have to buy gifts for. I even have most of them bought, and if I don't, I have my list with ideas ready to purchase.

But still, I thought I would annoy you with some gift ideas, because you know. T'is the season to annoy.

gift ideas are coming
These are all my 'go-to' gift ideas for birthdays, christmases, thank-yous.. whatever. They are particularly good for people who 'have everything' or that you don't know that well (extended in-laws, anyone?). None of them are particularly original or mind blowing, but hey. They work.

Socks.

Boring, I know, but whether it's for the husband that goes through socks faster than the speed of light, or your friend who likes cats or Doctor Who, or perhaps Christmas falls in winter and it will be a delightful winter like last year and everyone might need a pair of fuzzy socks.. there is a pair of socks for everybody.

Gift cards.

Oh how boring. But how smart. Whether it's steam (KC), starbucks (girlfriends) or amazon (everyone) gift cards are the best way to say I don't really give a damn. But actually, I do give a damn otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.

Perfume / Jewellery.

Women like this stuff. I personally don't go too fancy because everyone's taste differs and I am not really a perfume / jewellery gal myself so you know, bit out of my bubble. However, if you have a best friend to buy for, might I recommend this little pretty from Kate Spade? I bought it for my bestie as a thank you for being my MOH and she says she loves it, so.... It comes in gold and silver and is called the bridesmaid bangle. There is even a MOH one that is adorable and says 'the hocus to my pocus' among other cute things and OMG I want it, too bad I'm never going to be anyone's MOH.

bridesmaid / maid of honor bangles
but these would be perfect for besties or sisters regardless of whether there is a wedding involved

Books.

I know what you're thinking. Kristen, you give books as gifts, I'm SHOCKED. But I don't go round giving everyone Jane Austen books, I try to think about them and what they like. For example, I would not read it but I think my grandmother in-law would like the 'heaven is for real' book so I bought that for her. I bought a vegetarian cookbook for my mother in law because I know she has been trying to incorporate meatless meals in her life. Sometimes I search 'books for mothers, books for people who like dogs, books for religious people, books for people who liked Harry Potter' or whatever. Unless the person you are buying for hates life reading, a book is a good gift.

A framed photo.

Nothing says Happy Christmas like a photo of your pretty face with their pretty face.

A coffee cup.

Everyone can use a mug, even if they don't drink coffee. I think I have bought a mug for everyone in my life for some reason... no-one has ever said they hated it!

doctor who / monogram mug / dog hair / downton abbey / presidential slogan

Candles or smelly stuff.

Bath and body works for the win. I got a bunch of candles and gift sets the other day on sale, yay.

winter candy apple

Wine or beer. Or liquor.

As long as they are over legal drinking age, but of course.

Scarves, gloves and beanies.

I love cold weather items for gifts now that I live somewhere it actually gets bloody cold. Gloves and beanies for men, gloves and scarves for women. I'm not big on scarves for men and neither are the men in my life.

fingerless gloves / j crew scarf / asos scarf / colourful beanie / cat beanie / mens gloves'

Razors.

I promise this is not sponsored but seriously if you have a man in your life and he shaves... dollar shave club. Dooo eeet.

Notebooks or stationery.

Because who doesn't have shit to do?

only $10 for 2

A bow tie.

who doesn't want a bow tie
Because...

Also that was a joke. Unless you know someone who wears bow ties, in that case you are both awesome.

This striped top

Yeah I'm obsessed with this top and I think you should get it. The link isn't even an affiliate, cross my heart and hope to (not) die, I won't earn a cent. But you should buy it for yourself as a reward for getting all your Christmas shopping done! It is one size, a tad shapeless but that's why it's awesome. Long enough for the leggings as pants party, unless you are short and in that case it's a dress.

Experiences

Ah these are fabulous ideas and ones I want to start doing maybe next year. Ideas like rock climbing, paint ball, a play, a wine + painting night for your girlfriends, perhaps some freezer meals for the new parents or a promise to babysit so they can have a date night, a basket full of snacks and a plan to see an outdoor movie.. the options are endless and I really think people in my life would enjoy them, so maybe yours would too.

7 gifts that can't go under the tree

Ok, hit me. I know everyone has a 'go-to' gift idea of some sort and I will never say no to more ideas in my arsenal. Whatcha got?

  2. You know I would never turn my nose at a cute mug. Those notepads are perfect for a few people I know. With it being such a brutal winter scarves are always nice.

  4. Girrrl it's like you were reading my mind! I've been trying to rack my brain for things to put on my list and this definitely helped! I might try that shave club thing for my bro as a cool gift! My sis is the only one I have completely covered and I'm still finding stuff I want to get her.

  5. gift cards all the way. i'm more into geeky gifts and i love the site think geek. last year i put lego slippers on my list and got them :D

  6. i seriously ask for socks every year. fuzzy ones. i love that notepad. too funny!

  7. Women in the South LOVE Vera Bradley, but that junk is expensive. So, I watch for their 70% off sale(usually happens once or twice a year) and then buy a bunch of it for a really good price, which then make really great gifts for the various women in my life.

  8. I never say no to mugs, fuzzy socks, or anything that will generally keep me warm. My husband and I usually decide on an experience for presents and go in together and give it to each other. (Like going to a concert, trip, depending on what we're celebrating, but he knows to always give me chocolate/flowers/fuzzy socks, too!)

  9. Yes! I am actually planning to make scarves this year for some people. Cheap, but nice and everyone loves scarves (at least women do - as you pointed out)
And I would take fuzzy socks any day of the week. You can never, ever have too many.

  10. And I spit out my coffee with that frame picture, goodness! I agree that socks make some amazing gifts! Thanks for the fun gift guide.

  11. haha so funny. My KC loves bowties.. though he's said he has enough for several lifetimes now... I usually go for experience type gifts for him now. :) I think I am going to do some gift guides as well, but themed ones... don't be too annoyed.. haha lol. I love the mug + book combo too. Hard to go wrong! XO -Alexandra

  12. These are great ideas. I LOVE that shirt, but I'm so leery about the "one size" thing. It looks awesome on you, but will it me?

I love the idea of giving socks. It seems so silly, but I love fun socks myself.

  13. Not sure if I already commented because I wrote it out but then the screen blinked off?? Anyways, I love experience gifts. Those are the best and are so personal but for cheaper gifts, I stick to booze and scarves/mittens too. Great ideas Kristen :)

  14. Two things: That first meme and those notebooks.

I can't buy the meme, but I did just buy the notebooks!

  15. I think gift cards are great...sure they are a little "easy" if you will...but at least I know the person will use them and use them on what THEY actually want!! Candles are always a good option - great round-up!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I love giving gift cards so that people can just pick out what they want. I'm not good at picking out gifts for people.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I love getting socks, scarves and candles every year - even if they are the 'easy' gifts. They are always welcome! My hubs does the dollar shave club and it's great! No more running out for $20 razor blades!

  18. I love getting gift cards!

Socks, candles, books, and framed pictures are some of my go-to gifts for family. Especially pictures. Every year, my sisters, cousins and I do a personalized picture calendar of our kids and families for our grandmother. It's probably the best gift we've ever thought of.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Love this list! By the way, what is steam? I love giving scarves as gifts. Cute and everyone loves them! That striped top looks so great on you. :)

  20. great ideas and I love the top so much!! I always like to give pretty Christmas ornaments as gifts! They are my thang..... :)

  21. one of my girlfriends and i always exchange mugs for christmas it is a cute (and inexpensive tradition!)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I looove gift guides and I don't even know why because most of the time I already know what I plan to get someone- I think I usually just find things I want for myself, which is not good! haha I love all of your ideas- books and fun mugs are always a really good option!

    ReplyDelete
  23. These are all excellent ideas! I LOVE that shirt and I totally agree we need a treat for getting all of our shopping done! :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Love the "Experience" gift -- I usually stick to something like that for my husband. That way I'm getting something out of the gift, too ;) Haha no but these are all great ideas! Winter accessories, candles and wine are always a hit with the women in my life!

    ReplyDelete
  25. $13.83 for that shirt and free shipping, doooone. I always want more big stripey tees for leggings. I bought my mom the Hyperbole and a Half book last year, it's hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  26. These really are good ideas! A nice coffee cup and scarves and hats are my go-to when I need to get somebody something small. Is it bad that I am kind of glad I won't be at work over the holidays so I don't have to get my co-workers anything? :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Mine friends and I are contemplating getting all fancied up and doing a super nice dinner instead of giving gifts this year... I'm thinking that sounds better and better

    ReplyDelete

  29. I love this is a REAL list. I hate when people suggest $150 gifts for their boss. WHAT? #stupid
I love socks & always give them myself :)
I'm obviously a big fan of giving knitted scarves & hats.
There are certain people I always get a book for every year. Love my reading friends.
You can never go wrong with gift cards - I don't care if people say that's tacky... what do you bet it gets used :)

  30. I would love to receive all of these things! I think my favorite gifts are gift cards (because I like buying things so not having to spend money IS the gift in that case) and candles/smelly stuff. They're my favorite because I don't like to have a lot of stuff, so the perfect gift for me is something I can use but not have to keep around or find a place for. And definitely yes to experiences! Those are my favorite gifts to give. Ben and I rarely give each other actual gifts and instead we usually find some activity to do, concert to go to, trip to take, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I always like socks and don't know why they have a bad rap!? Gift cards are amazing, too (and if you get a crap one, you can sell it on cardpool.com - it's awesome!).

    ReplyDelete
  32. When I saw the title of this post I got so excited. I love looking at gift ideas!! I know gift cards are considered boring but I actually love getting them. In fact, I love everything you've listed. I would love to get anything from it hahaha.. especially books & booze. ;) I love giving "experiences" - especially to family or "in-laws". We took Joey's parents to a hockey game last year and I think they liked spending an evening out with us more than the game!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh wow, that dog hair mug.... PERFECT for my sister! Now where do I get my hands on it?
I like to give mugs too because it's something people can actually use.

  34. Gift cards, wine and experiences are my go to's. I love gift cards, who doesn't love to shop :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think my go-to gifts are always wine/beer/alcohol or gift cards - I'm not original and I'm OK with that!!! I give things that I would be happy with!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love getting books that people picked out for me, or candles...I can i always use more scented candles! As far as giving gifts though I love to do something unique, and giving an "experience" is perfect for that.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I always tell people to buy me candles and tea. Because usually the people asking are aunts and other more distant relatives who want to buy me something but don't know what. I tell them to save their money, I don't want anything – I hate "stuff," you know this — but if they feel the devastating need to buy me something, go with candles. I will always use them and I'll always drink tea. I think I'll add socks to that list too, because I LOVE socks. Boot socks, toe socks, spa socks, fuzzy socks, themed socks. Wait til you see my Christmas socks ;) This comment is only partially relevant but whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You are cracking me UP with this! I really love your striped tee (which yes, will be a dress on me) and I NEED that Shit I gotta get DONE notebook. Love that!! I can actually think of a couple people who would love that for Christmas too, so this is a big deal. I don't think I've ever looked at a gift guide and found an actual gift idea, but today I have. KUDOS.

  41. Love these ideas! Very practical and you definitely won't go broke from them! I'm with ya on those mixed feelings! I can't afford most items on those lists for myself, much less someone else!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Is it bad that I like gift lists not for suggestions for other people, but for shit I want to buy for myself? Like those notebooks! I NEED THOSE! Getting added to my list....

  43. SOCKS! Not boring and totally a good gift any day of the week!

  44. The experience as gift idea is amazing! I didn't even think about that. I used to think giftcards were impersonal, but honestly, it's the next best thing to cash and ERRYBODY loves cash. I agree: anyone who hates reading really must hate life.

  45. These ideas are great - I'll definitely have to reference this page when I get around to doing some christmas shopping.

  47. Great list! I LOVE getting gift cards and I love giving them too. I liked seeing socks on the list. My dad is obsessed with this company called Happy Socks. He started buying them and they were such a hit that they're now a go-to gift for everyone.

  48. I just ordered like 8 mugs and 8 books online. I'm piecing them out with things like boot socks, favorite candies, etc. Throw in a $15 gift card and you've got a good gift bag. For books, I choose one that I loved that I know will apply to others. I do it every year!

I really like that striped shirt…

  56. I don't even have a gift arsenal. People baffle me. :) I have to figure out my son's birthday in a week, and Christmas, and I'm completely stumped for my whole family! (Granted, we don't spend much, so that makes it trickier too.)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Soooo...I've actually been using dollar shave club myself because I prefer men's razors! :)
