The 10 Commandments of Blogging

I haven't been blogging very long, but I've learned a thing or ten... and of course thought it would be fun to share.

1. Thou shall turn off captcha.
2. Thou shall not be a no-reply blogger.
3. Thou shall respond to comments via email.
4. Thou shall comment on other blogs.
5. Thou shall not copy cat without linking to inspiration.
6. Thou shall link to the specific post and not home page for link ups.
7. Thou shall be on all the social media doodads.
8. Thou shall take photos of all the things and outfits.
9. Thou shall share all the personal stories.
10. Thou shall make some of the best friendships ever.

Obviously these are things I've learned as a blogger using blogger. ie not wordpress, disqus etc. Anything else I've forgotten?

  1. Interesting list! I'm not on all the "social media doodads," but I feel OK breaking that commandment b/c I'd probably go insane otherwise, haha. #3 is my favorite. I love getting responses to comments, and responding to comments I get! That's when it feels most like the bloggers you read/readers of your blog are your friends :D

  2. yes to #4!! I can't stand when i get an email response to a comment i left them but then they NEVER visit. wtf? is there some law i don't know about?

  3. Yes to all of these! I use Wordpress, but all of these still apply. :) Though I never take pics of my outfits.

  4. No-reply bloggers make me so sad. Like, why won't you let me love you?!

  5. Agreed! Although I always break the link up one about linking back to the original post, I always link back to my home page hopefully I don't go to blogger hell for that! Happy Friday doll!

  6. Um yes to all of this!! :) And I agree with Elena... I always link up with my homepage. Mainly because I do most everything from my phone (which is also the reason I HATE captcha and will abandon leaving a comment if I get the captcha wrong more than once) so it's difficult to get the full link of the actual page. Have a great weekend!

  7. Rules, shmules. :) I'm okay with breaking a few of these. e.g. Social Media. Since I was a late joiner to IG, I think it's okay to phase yourself into different spaces. And I'm still not on GFC or Facebook and don't really feel a need to be. I found it overwhelming to start blogging - I couldn't take on blogging AND all of the social media all at the same time. Baby steps were a little easier for me, so I'm understanding if people don't want to do everything all at once.

  8. I love all of these! I am guilty of linking to my homepage but I'm getting better (ie less lazy) about this.

  9. Yup these are all good lessons for one to learn...I know even bein on Wordpress I made sure I wasn't a no-reply blogger b/c that's just no fun. Thought it took me a hot minute to figure it out on WP and thought all teh Blogger blogger were just rude lol

  10. Great point! Although I think I am a no reply blogger, so I gotta work on that...thanks for the link!

  11. Yes to all of these! Although I haven't really followed the one about the social media yet, still working on that! I have them but haven't done much with them. and THANK YOU about no-reply bloggers! It's so annoying to hit reply and then see that the email is noreply@blogger.com or whatever it is! Ugh! Of course I was no-reply at first because I didn't know, but as soon as someone pointed it out to me I fixed it!

  12. I'm on WordPress but many of these still apply!

This is such a great list!!! The social media one, the personal stories one, and the friendships one are my favorite!

  13. All of this is so true! Captcha makes me crazy. I was trying to comment on someone's blog the other day and I literally had to refresh 20 times to finally get the letters right. So frustrating! Have a great weekend, girl! :)

  14. Haha this is so incredibly true!! The only thing I don't do off this list is have a twitter. Its in the future hopefully :)

  17. Amen to these!!! You're the best!! xo

  18. Amen...
I hate no-reply bloggers... I think Blogger is just stupid though & changes it without people even knowing it.

  19. Great list:) I should start doing some of those things myself!

  20. Amen! Pretty much perfect girl :) I get all sorts of sad when I can't reply to comments!

  23. You're good with the replies. :) I have trouble finding time to reply to comments on my blog, but I always do if there is a question or more to say.

  24. No response commenters/bloggers are horrible people basically IMO ha. What's the point if you want to live in a bubble and have zero interaction? Yay for YOU and your blog lady! Happy weekend :)

  25. Ummmm yes yes and yes!! Number one is the biggest seriously just turn it off!!!!!! I want to throw my phone (since i do 99% of comments from my phone which makes it a million times worse) every time captcha comes up! If you get a spam comment just delete it ugh!!

  30. Love this list! I have to admit, I always feel a little left out when people talk about their instagrams!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes to this list! I so hate captcha. And I can't tell you how many blog comments I responded to, only to find out it's NO REPLY.

    ReplyDelete
  32. thou shalt not be a dillhole and be rude or bash other bloggers

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love that you lead with the captcha. I hate that one and I've actually commented before and closed the window before I realized it had come up...SO FRUSTRATING!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yesssssss! That captcha is the worst!! I never get it right the first time!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, to no captcha! Just say no to disqus. The friendships is the best part of blogging.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've been blogging for a few years and was a no-reply blogger for most of it - now I understand how people make friends blogging haha! I've totally got the sharing personal stories down though, I am so TMI sometimes :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes, to all even though I suck at most of the social media things:)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I hate captcha!! I always mess those up. Take photos of allllll the things!! I'm bad at that. Especially with food, because I usually eat it first, then remember pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  39. OK, question... why do you say respond to comments by email? I've been thinking about doing that (although I have no idea how), but was just wondering what the pro/cons are?
And...I would know if I was a no reply blogger right? Does that just mean that you don't let anyone comment on your posts? (What's the point of that??)
    Sorry for the dumb questions!
I would add a #11 Offer the option to follow your blog by email!! Some of us never look at Bloglovin!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I have broken so many of these. haha. But I'm trying to be better! Thank you for this handy-dandy list that I can refer back to! :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Best idea for a post. I especially agree about making friends and also commenting on other blogs- that is very important.

    ReplyDelete
  42. hahahaha I am so bad about linking up just my blog to linkups and not specific posts, hahahahhahaha

    ReplyDelete
  43. Great commandments and reminders!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Doodads. Yes!!!! This word is in my daily vocab. Another reason we are long lost besties :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Haha I love this - especially be on all the social media doodads!

  46. I'm on Wordpress and really miss the function of being able to respond via email. The comment function on blogger was much better :(

Thank you so much for your comment! I reply to my comments via email, but I can't do that if you are a no-reply blogger :-) If you are here to be a troll, please kindly bugger off. Thanks!
