House Tour; Master Bedroom + Bath Before & During

Ah the master bedroom. For some reason, this is the hardest room for me. I know what I want, but it's hard to find things in my price range and taste, so I just leave it all as is and sulk in a corner. Sigh.

Here's what it looked like when we first saw it:

Very pretty, and oh how I wanted that dresser. Beautiful. But anyway. KC wasn't a huge fan of the purple, and wanted to paint. We painted it the very first night we moved in, which was not the smartest idea because we were tired and it was the first bad snow of the winter and it took KC like 5 hours to get home. Also, not smart was the fact that I let KC pick the colour. What was I thinking?

Here's what it looks like now:

The Disney print was a gift for our wedding.

Ok, I know it's not that bad (or is it?). It's just so blue like nursery blue. And the dressers aren't horrible, but they are KC's from when he was a kid. So, I'm allowed to want my own stuff, 'our' stuff. But like everything, there always seems to be something just a little more important to buy first.

And this is what the master bath looked like when we first saw it:

And here's what it looks like now:

This thing was the first item KC and I bought together for our apartment, and it's from Goodwill holla.

It's very small and outdated, and so gold, but it works for us and I am hoping we can update it a little soon. Baby steps, right?

The master bedroom needs a complete overhaul, in my opinion. Everything. Bed, bedding, walls, furniture, art and whatnot. So I will not be offended if you want to throw all the suggestions at me.

  1. if i may be so bold...i think that the disney print and wedding photo array are cute, but perhaps a little too small for the space its in. you might add more pictures to make a larger gallery wall or you could put something on top of the dresser to close the space between the dresser and the pictures. you could do some books with some cute bookends, add a plant, or maybe even a lamp? thats what immediately jumped out at me. decorating takes ages! but can be so gratifying when you get things just the way you like them. good luck!

  2. I love that Disney print! I'm about to join that dang decorating club and you're right, there is always something more important to buy before buying the stuff you actually want.

  3. I think you should add a bench under the bedroom window. Build your own! ;) I think some art above the bed is needed. I would look into if you can spray paint the gold in the bathroom with some water resistant spray paint.

  4. Our master bedroom is the most hot mess room in the house right now, too! I can't stand it so I'm hoping to start working on it soon. If you really don't like the paint, I would say just redo it! It's a crappy job but it only takes a day and paint makes a HUGE difference. Also look on Pinterest for DIY spray painting the gold fixtures... I'm about to start doing that with all the gold door knobs in our house :)

  5. I love Kerry's suggestions. As for the dressers, why not upcycle them by painting them or re-staining them? That way you can make them your own for a much cheaper price than buying new ones. :)

  6. First of all, that Disney print is PERFECT. Secondly, I vote for neutral-colored walls in your bedroom. Maybe a nice, light grey; or a taupe. That way, you can add pops of 1-3 different colors (rather than overwhelming your space with one color in particular) with your bedding, accent pillows, throws, and even the color of whatever new furniture you decide to get!

  7. Baby steps are key when it comes to a new home! We kind of went all out right in the beginning and got so stressed out! Love that splish splash picture! So cute! Goodwill is the best!

  8. The master bedroom is the worst for me too! I agree with the above suggestions - a neutral wall color makes all the difference. Decorating a home takes so much time and it's never complete - it's exhausting haha

  9. I would totally paint those dressers black and update the hardware. That would be night and day and kinda sorta like new furniture?!? Right?

  10. I love your wedding wall and that ducky print is precious.

  11. I know it's gonna look fab! I think the idea of a gallery wall is amazing, it can feature prints/pictures of everything you love.

  12. I'm not gunna lie, I love that dresser! You could soooooo easily go to anthropology and grab some awesome new knobs, maybe mix and match your favorites and then sand down the dresser and paint it! White, black, or black and gold accents! It'll be just like new!

  13. Spray paint is good, and getting a cheap framed mirror from Home Goods always helps update a bathroom. The color doesn't photograph like a nursery so no worries there :) I actually like your dressers but totally understand wanting something more yours. Chalk paint and updating the hardware would be an easy fix, though!

  14. I love the Disney print and your wedding pictures! I feel the same way about our bathroom, it's one of the rooms we haven't done anything to since we moved in, and it's not bad, it's just blah! But yes, always something else to spend money on, especially since we have a guest bathroom so no one sees it but us!

  15. We have a fan in our room too - I need that white noise to fall asleep!! That disney print with your wedding photos is so great!!!

  16. What is it about bedrooms?! My bedroom is the hardest room in my apt to decorate. I really like the color and it doesn't scream nursery at all.

  17. I loooove that Disney print !!

  18. I like the color! My bedroom is a blue too.

As for improvements, more stuff on the walls - expand your gallery wall and add art or photos to the other walls! You've got a good base, make it even more personal.

An easy and cheap way to update furniture is changing out the hardware.

  19. That Disney print is perfect! And I love the box fan on the floor....we are sporting on in our master too! I can't sleep without that thing!!!

  20. Love the color! And the gallery wall, that's so cute with the Disney print! How fun!

  21. I feel like my mind is constantly turning with baby step ideas haha! I like the color you have it :)

  22. Your wedding pictures are gorgeous and I LOVE that Disney print! The blue is definitely an improvement over all that purple (what were the previous owners thinking?!) but I can see where you'd get a baby boy nursery vibe

  23. Nice! I want someone to come decorate my master bedroom so it looks like a grown up bedroom. We found all of our bathroom fixtures on AMAZON for super cheap!

  24. Yes, small steps are the way to go. The color is very light but not bad. I really like blues and grays but we haven't done any decorating or painting either. We keep saying we will then we don't. But I like what Lindsay said about cheap stuff on Amazon.

  25. Picking paint colors can be SO hard. I want to repaint my master that I did just a year ago, and I probably will within the next few months! I don't think the light blue is bad...my mother in-law just re-did her master with light blue walls and painted her furniture a distressed black, it's a very pretty combo!

  26. We used to have a very similar color blue in our bedroom and I always wondered if it looked nursery-ish (I picked it so I can't blame Ben haha). I only painted it that color because the rest of our house was greige and I felt like we "should" have some color at least in one room. I eventually ended up painting the bedroom greige too.

  27. It's amazing what just a headboard and a few fun pillows from Ross/TJ can do. Check Overstock and Amazon for good deals and free/cheap shipping :)

  28. That disney print is so sweet! I think the bedroom could do with some uniformity in the furniture maybe, and a window fixture! Maybe some larger wall art will help break up the blue too. But I'm not a designer, just the first things that popped into mind :)

  29. I would tell you pinterest for all things inspiration! Ugh sharing one sink is hard right? We have to do that at my condo and he always needs to use it when I'm in there. Homegoods is my go to place for finding all things bedding and decor for affordable prices!

  30. Love your gallery wall in the bedroom. I'm with ya though girlfriend. Our master bedroom is so ugly & bare but everything I like I just can't pull the trigger and fork over the money. Like my mom says, "It takes time and money" to get your house how you want it. So annoyingly true.

  31. I actually like both the before and after paint colors. I like how the previous owners had the artwork above the bed. It definitely takes some time to make a house a home!

  32. The Disney print is awesome.

I'm awful with decorating so I'm no help.

  33. I like the blue, much better than the blue in our master bedroom.

I think what you need is to take the wall behind the bed and paint big, thick stripes, a grey or something. It'll give you a cool accent wall. Then I would put some fun curtains in the window. I hate blinds.

  34. I kind of love the blue! But I know what it's like to have someone else pick something out when it's not what you pictured. Love your wedding photos and that Disney print is so cute too!

  35. We had gold fixtures in our house and just replacing them (even the shower part) with oil rubbed bronze made a huge improvement!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. The master isn't that bad, just needs a new paint job. That would change a lot. As far as the bathroom, try changing out the fixtures to a stainless steel or some other color (anything but gold, lol)! Fixtures can make a HUGE difference!

  37. I think your home looks perfectly nice and charming and I love you EVEN MORE for sharing it for that reason. All the Pinterest-perfect homes make me feel bad about my house, which is perfectly fine but definitely nothing special. I am terrible at home decor and don't really decorate AT ALL, so everything you've done looks good to me! I

  38. I want to sneak in and paint silhouettes (whites, grays, and black) of trees and birds in your bedroom, to make use of the blues and coordinate with the pictures. And a little silver sparkly chandelier (you can get one for about $20 now) overhead, and white and black throw pillows on your bed...and some twinkle lights, I think. And continue the theme right into your bathroom. All light blue, silver, white and black. :)

    1. Oh, and you'd arrange the pictures so they'd sort of float on different branches on that wall. You can make everything fit and work that's there, and probably make it stellar for about $100-200 at most.

  39. I like the blue it is a bit more neutral. We really need bedside tables, we only have one from when I lived by myself and only had room for one. There is so much to do when you own a house, it has to be baby steps, but I know it can be frustrating. I'm a I have an idea and I want it now, kind of girl :)

  40. I'm in the same boat with our master bedroom! It's so mismatched and just awful! I've been looking for new bedding for over a year and just can't find anything I like and the wall color is like Barney purple. We did buy the paint for it this past weekend, though! I don't mind the blue on the walls but baby steps are the most important part or you will get overwhelmed so fast!

  41. I feel the exact same about our master bedroom! your right, it's all about baby steps! That window and closets probably make for a rough time rearranging the room!
