I would normally throw everything I could fit in a suitcase, zero planning and hope for the best. That always ended up with me rummaging through an overflowing suitcase, giving up and wearing the same things over and over.
We went for about 2 weeks, and it was 'winter'. After the winter the US had, I was pretty sure we would be walking around in shorts and flip flops because the low is about 50 with a high of 70 for Sydney. Colder in Melbourne, warmer in Cairns.
KC wore his shorts a bunch, but I am a big baby and get cold easily so I did wear my cardis and jackets. I only wore a big coat once and it really wasn't needed but I had already packed everything else, so there you go.
First off, I consulted Emi, Audrey, Travel Fashion Girl and MK at Outfit Posts for various packing and remixing ideas. I started out with 50+ items, but after I started playing with outfits I realised I had far too many and finally culled it down to 24 items.
// Striped top // White tee // White tunic // Polka dot top //
//Cream sweater // Black cardigan // Grey cardigan // Mustard cardigan //

Items not included but were packed: underwear, socks, camis, toiletries. There are also sneakers & leggings in the below pictures where I was packing, but I only wore them for the flight there and back. Most items shown are exact, while others were the most similar for items that were old or sold out. Everything under $50 when post was published.
These items could probably make 1000 outfits, but I didn't need that many so I just mucked around on polyvore and created a bunch of different outfits and took photos so I could see what they looked like - yep, I'm that girl. That was actually the most important part because I found out some things look better on a computer screen..
Here's all my stuff:
note: unfortunately the white fluffball did not come with us.
Here it is in my carry on suitcase:
Everything is in here, except the big coat and boots. I didn't put underwear or anything in there, but I did include what I am wearing on the plane so I think it evens out. Plus, I didn't roll, use any packing cubes - nothing. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
Now I didn't actually use just a carry on for my trip because I had other things to pack, like presents for family. But if you're just a normal gal going to Australia, then I just wanted to show it could be done. I am not sure it would work in other countries where the winter is actually a winter, and depending on where you are from, you might not even feel the need for a jacket or anything. But I'm a bit of a baby. Actually, this could probably work as a Spring or Autumn packing list for other countries.
I was allowed 2 suitcases on my international flight and I wanted to pack light enough on the way there so that I could bring back a whole suitcase of food and clothes that I bought there. Which I did. #priorities.
Good thing all of this can actually fit into a carry on, because we had 2 mini trips planned that only allowed carry ons so they had their own 'mini packing lists'. One place is colder and one is warmer than Sydney.
4 days in Melbourne:
3 days in Cairns:

Here are the outfits I came up with for the entire trip.
I eventually got bored and stopped taking photos, but I could have easily made more outfits. By the way - I started planning packing + outfits almost 3 months before we left. Yep, I know, crazy planner lady. I don't think I could do this with like 2 weeks to plan. Trying on outfits gets old fast. And yes, in one of the photos I have 2 different shoes on, and the other I'm barefoot. Just ignore that.
I made a super handy pinterest friendly picture as well, if you feel so inclined.
PS! Look at me, I'm co-hosting a link up on Monday! Growing up in the world, I tell ya. It would mean a lot to me if you linked up - so Kels doesn't regret asking me!

This is such a great idea! I never thought about taking pictures of my outfits before packing them. Usually I just throw everything in a suitcase and then when I get there I can't remember what I planned on wearing with what. And look at you getting everything in that carry on! Dang girl! I need to take packing lessons from you!

Damn girl... your really good at putting together outfits! I just sit around in my closet staring and thinking I have nothing to wear. Thats how most days start..ha!
ReplyDeleteAnd a new link up to explore...thats great. What are we supposed to be sharing about on Monday?
when i went to australia, the trip included NZ and Hawaii! Talk about having to pack for everything! You did a remarkable job.
ReplyDeleteI am seriously amazed at your packing skills. I go somewhere in the US for a week or heck even a few days and I pack my entire closet. I need to not do that ha!
ReplyDeleteAlso, can we please have the weather Australia has in winter time here? Seriously 50-70s? I would love that!
Wow what a great pack job! I post about packing on my blog today too funnily enough!

That is awesome. I am so impressed by your packing skills (and the time you took actually trying everything on, wow!).
ReplyDeleteI am beyond impressed with all the outfits you created!! I for one don't think I could ever accomplish this!! Really love that polka dot shirt!
ReplyDeleteSO smart to use Polyvore to pack! I've never thought of that, but I'll definitely use it in the future! Yay for a new linkup!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the idea of using Polyvore to pack- genius! I'll definitely be doing that for my next trip!
ReplyDeleteHoly cow your multitude of outfit creations is impressive, girl! Love the concept of the new link-up too! Enjoy the long weekend ;)
ReplyDeleteWow I'm so impressed and I definitely want to try making outfits with all my clothes before my next trip. I usually throw random stuff in a bag and pray for the best. Oh and your stripped dress is so cute :) I will definitely link up (if I remember, i'll try my bestest) but I do enjoy Blonder Side of Life blog, much like your blog it always makes me laugh
ReplyDeletei have to admit i am so impressed with your packing skill for 2 weeks
ReplyDeleteI love that you started planning months in advance. I sooo do that too. And yay for new linkup!
ReplyDeleteWhy are you so organized?! Haha OMG love the picture idea! I use to do that planning blog outfits and then just got really lazy and stopped doing it haha! I am the WOREST over packer!! You just never know what may happen?! You may get invited to a red carpet event! You just never know!!

OK.. you are awesome. I'd probably just have a melt down trying to think to pack that far in advance. Another reason why I don't travel.
ReplyDeleteIm so impressed Im speechless. When I go it wont be winter anymore but still saving this!
ReplyDeleteAmazing! And I'm loving all of your outfit combos! xo
ReplyDeleteGirlfriend, you are amazing!!!! Packing with a purpose, for sure! Love all of the mixing and matching!

This is genius. I just throw random shit in bags and get pissed when I can't put an outfit together once I get there! haha
ReplyDeleteI started the throw-everything-into-Polyvore-and-make-a-bunch-of-outfits thing when I was shopping for spring clothes, but it never even dawned on me to do it for trips. Clever girl!
ReplyDeleteDamn girl, you're impressive. I'm gonna have to try the Polyvore thing the next time I travel. For weekend trips where I'm driving, I'm so bad - I just throw twice as many bottoms, tops, cardigans, and shoes than I will ever need in a bag and hope for the best!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I went on vacation for 3 weeks last summer and would have loved this post then!! I am for sure an over packer. Which is totally frustrating. What exactly is the link up about? I'm excited to check it out!
ReplyDeleteI'm that girl too (taking pictures of my outfits and sending em to my sister to check) but I don't look half as cute so you win lol
ReplyDeleteLOOK at all those selfies. And you seriously nailed it on the efficiency side of things :) I can hardly keep it to this much when I stay the night at my parents house ;)
ReplyDeleteWow! The attention span it took to try on all those outfits and take selfies is just mind blowing lay fascinating! I sure couldn't have done it but love that you did it!!! Such a fabulous idea! Maybe I should pack 3 months in advance next time. I usually wait until the morning of the flight...Ha! Congrats on co hosting a link up! I'll definitely have to check it out!
ReplyDeleteImpressive layout...there is no way I would have the patience to do all those pictures :) You are very organized in your packing. I did make a very detailed packing list before our Europe trip but did not do any "trial" packing. Rolling really helps to make more space I have found.
ReplyDeleteDaaaaaaum girl! You have way more ambition than I would with packing! I can't believe how few items you were able to use to make so many outfits! How awesome is that!! :) Quite impressive if you ask me!
ReplyDeleteTaking pictures of outfits is SUCH a good idea to do when packing! I swear when we went on our 11 day honeymoon, I packed enough for 30 days. Totally not necessary haha. This would make getting dressed so easy everyday!
ReplyDeleteThis is seriously impressive! I usually under-pack, which is annoying because I get like two days into my trip and realize I have nothing left to wear! I love how you took such classic pieces and mixed and matched them to come up with totally different looking outfits! Are the jeans you're wearing the same ones from Old Navy in the polyvore? I'm convinced I need a pair!
ReplyDeleteGeez, you are fancy AND organized! You go girl!! I always over pack . . . it's a real struggle!!
ReplyDeleteOh Mah Gaw I am bowing down to your packing post!! That is serious dedication. I was exhausted doing it for 5 outfits!! The trying on part sucks but it really does make such a difference. Plus it's really fun to see!
ReplyDeleteThis is so thorough! I am actually planning to do something similar and share my packing list for an upcoming trip to Germany. Hopefully I will be as successful as you!!!
ReplyDeleteSo much organization!
ReplyDeleteThese tips are PERFECT for me! I'm not sure what to expect for a Sydney winter. Can't be anywhere near as bad as Ohio!
ReplyDeleteI love those mini-sets! I will have to remember them when the weather changes here :)
