So obviously the most essential things are clothes.. like, nobody wants to see a naked person at the airport. And planes are super cold.
Anyway... Generally, I wear comfy clothes - a tee, leggings, and my biggest / heaviest shoes. Long, warm socks and a scarf for added warmth and attempt at not looking like I'm in my pjs. I love my coat with the faux fur lined hood, its super comfy, warm and the hood is a fabulous stand in pillow. My carry on 'bag' is a super chic backpack and then I also have a crossbody purse.
As for what is inside those bags..
I'm not gonna pretend I'm a glamorous traveler, because I'm not. I'm interested in being comfortable and clean. I don't wear makeup, I don't bring makeup and my hair is normally in a ponytail.
My teeth always feel gross, so I brush as many times as I possibly can. I can never have enough tissues, and I would cry without chapstick. I bring face cleanser wipes and moisturizer. I'm not a germaphobe, but I like to have my hand sanitizer just in case, and of course then I need hand lotion. After that, deodorant, pain pills and some sort of sleep aid.
I always travel with all my valuables in my carry on, like my phone or camera and their chargers. Kindle for reading - then I don't have to worry about not liking the book I brought because I can bring 3000. Phew. Snacks because I am always hungry, a pen and notebook for my thoughts, plus you always need a pen. I like basic headphones, I'm not fancy with the $300 ridiculousness (thats cool if you are) or I will use the ones the airline provides. Lastly, I buy a bottle of water the second I get through security. I know it's wasteful, but I buy one because once I brought my empty water bottle that cost me like $30 (?!) and the security guy made me throw it out. I was cranky. Flying makes me dehydrated and I am too impatient to wait for the lovely staff to bring me a teeny cup of water.

I am sure I am forgetting something - what about you? What are your essentials?
So with you - I'm not a glamorous traveler either. I'm all about the leggings and sweatshirts!

Lots of gum for popping ears!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not glamorous either and everything you carry I carry on with me and I'm all about comfort when flying! If I'm going to be stuffed in a can for hours I better be comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on these pieces. I'm also so for a tooth brush, gross teeth are the worst!
ReplyDeletei bring: my face products, a change of clothes, chargers, tablet, phone, water and snacks

Vodka and Soda
I totally agree - I always travel with my valuables with me!! I usually have a ton of snacks (since I'm constantly hungry) a boat load of magazines that I never read because I always watch the in flight movie haha!! My sister bought me this evian bottle mist to spray after the flight to hydrate your face and I seriously love it!! You should get one before your long flight to australia!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great list lady. I also travel comfy too.
ReplyDeleteI have turned into such a frumpy traveler but I remember when I was little, it was a big deal! My mother put me in a travel outfit!!! love the post!
ReplyDeleteThe last time I flew I made the biggest mistake and packed my chargers in my checked-bag-- thankfully I didn't end up needing them, but if my flight would have been delayed or canceled or something I could have been in trouble. How long is your flight to Australia?
ReplyDeleteI definitely always travel with my valuables and of course my cell charger! I try to never check a bag just because I'm so afraid of it getting lost! I always have to have my Nook with me too! I'm definitely not a glamorous traveller, I'm all about the comfort when I travel. Especially on long flights! Still so jealous you're about to leave for AUS...

They made you throw that water bottle away? that's just depressing. You know they totally swipe that stuff!
ReplyDeleteYep - kindle & phone & tablet would be a must for me too... I need to be entertained above all else :)
I I dress similar to you when I fly, and my packing used to be similar--- but now that I have a kid…. Well, I pack my valuables and then my daughter's books, toys, etc. This stuff is key. In March/April I visited my family and flew from Singapore to Atlanta alone with the 1 1/2 yr old…. it was an experience. Needless to say, her happiness is my TOP priority!
ReplyDeleteAll about being comfy too, and I can't brush my teeth enough. I'm all about the clean teeth feeling haha.
ReplyDeleteI've read posts on what people pack in their luggage, but I've not read one like this with what they're taking on the plane. I really liked it! As you know, I've not traveled by plane before, but if I ever do I have a bit of knowledge now on what I should look into carrying with me. Some of these items wouldn't have crossed my mind, I would have just spaced on them. Also, yay for kindles and the unlimited amount of books one can bring!!
ReplyDeleteI like wearing a long scarf so I can bunch it all up for a pillow. Snacks and reading materials are a must. Oh and also it's nice to travel with a boy because they like carry your bags and lift them into the overhead compartment ;-)
ReplyDeleteMark travels with a fancy backpack as well. I tell him he looks like a little frat boy ;)
Comfy is the only way I travel, especially by plane. Squished in those small seats, nothing is better than a pair of leggings. I got a kindle a few years ago and my life has never been the same. I'm notorious for buying a book and discarding it halfway through because I didn't like it. With the kindle that's not a problem anymore. Cool post!
ReplyDeleteI never did understand how people wear heels and dresses on planes. especially long flights, they're just so cold! And I fall asleep as soon as we are in the air, so pajama-esk clothing is how I roll. I need to take some notes from you and pack better toiletries though. The wipes are such a good idea
ReplyDeleteI love reading about people's packing too because I always learn new tips! I always load up my Surface or Ipad with lots of TV shows or movies and earplugs for when I want to try to sleep. They really cancel out that "humming" noise the plane makes.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing what people have in their bags! It makes me feel less alone in the practical mode! I think after all my electronics and stuff, my most precious item is probably my tooth brush! especially after long night flights! It helps feel a bit cleaner if you can't shower right away.
ReplyDeleteSecurity guys at airports are so rude! If the bottle is empty you should have been allowed to keep it wow!
Noooo, they made you throw away an empty water bottle?? That sucks! I always buy a bottle of water straightaway, too. And snacks. Once, I tried to buy the "healthy" snacks, but the cashier rang me and told me it was 7 bucks for my bag of nuts and shits. So I bought a pack of M&M's instead. I should bring a toothbrush, too. I always feel like I have gross mouth after a flight.
ReplyDeleteThese are spot on!! Especially the Purell and tooth brush haha! Now I want to travel!!

You have like all of the essentials - will totally refer to this later! And I'm glad you realized the awkwardness that could ensue if you showed up to the airport naked hah. Then again, first-class upgrade possibility?! (JK!)
ReplyDeleteI am all about comfort when I travel. I always have to have a book or my iPad for my kindle. Tunes are a must so my ipod/phone. Hair ties, and gum just in case. Your list is pretty much what I bring so not much to add.
ReplyDeleteMan you are on it! I always forget stuff. Like my phone charger. But never my tooth brush, I always have a pack of Wisps in my purse. Dental hygiene....
ReplyDeleteTraveling and my life go together like PB&J - love your list of travel essentials...I did a post on Traveling Fit and Light { http://www.delipsch.com/?p=497 } but definitely am wearing comfortable clothes, I always bring my Brita water botter (the one with a filter) so I have fresh water wherever, fancy note pad and pen (my mind is always thinking about food and fitness) definitely my phone and charger, gum, "horrible" magazines, nuts and some garden of life bars.
ReplyDeleteI've never traveled really long distances (our honeymoon was only a five hour flight) but I'm going to Africa in September and so nervous about being comfortable since we will be traveling for almost 24 hours. Thanks for the tips, love!
ReplyDeleteI pretty much bring what you listed except I always have a real book as well. I also bring lollipops or hard candy to help with the pressure in my ears and my bad breath phobia since I don't chew gum.
ReplyDeletei hate how greasy i feel after plane rides so i try not to wear any makeup other than mascara myself!
ReplyDeleteYes, snacks and water are a must and moisturizer...the plane dries out my skin SO much. I usually go for slip on shoes but then bring big cozy socks to wear in my seat. I'm always freezing on long flights.
ReplyDeleteLove this! I always forget to put my toothbrush in my carry on and I always always regret it!
ReplyDeleteGirl I roll the same way on the plane - comfy leggings and my biggest shoes to free up room in my suitcase! I always have hand sanitizer with me too, everywhere I go pretty much, but ESPECIALLY when sitting that close to strangers on a plane! Always snacks too, because I have a pretty hard time finding anything filling and gluten/dairy-free at the airport!
ReplyDeletemy now essentials have changed post baby ie my purse now is the diaper bag apparently a girl doesn't need to carry as much in her purse as she thought now it is phone keys and wallet in the diaper bag oh lipbalm and lip gloss
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure you covered all my essentials! As long as I bring some of my own make up and lounge clothes, I can feel comfy anywhere!
ReplyDeletedang, you are prepared! i'm such a terrible plane packer, i just grab whatever i think i'll need and inevitably forget something... as long as i have my iPad or my phone and a charger i'm typically set! :)
ReplyDeletei bring most of those things! something to read, listen to, drink, eat, and something for my skin!
ReplyDeleteI love reading what other people pack for traveling too. I am with you on being comfortable and adding a scarf is a great way to disguise that you're wearing pajamas! I never thought of that. And you could use it as a little blanket too.
