Wardrobe Essentials #4: Shorts & Skirts

Catch up on dresses, jeans and pants if you haven't read those parts of the series.

Shorts and skirts are a bit of an iffy item because not everyone likes them, or they might not fit your lifestyle.  I used to hate skirts, and never wear them - now I wear them often for work but not so much for fun. That's just my lifestyle, yours is most likely different.

Everyone's body is different, everyone's style is different. I am not a huge fan of pencil skirts because I feel like they bring too much attention to the area that I want to hide. This is as pencil as I get:

I like a more a-line style (or 'flowy' as I call them) skirt because it sits at my waist and covers the booty and hips.

Regardless of the style of skirts you might like, I think 2-3 each for work & fun skirts is a good number.

I think solid coloured skirts are super versatile and a great piece to have in the closet, but I love a good polka dot skirt or stripe skirt. I'm absolutely in love with brightly coloured skirts and I need one in my life. I'm just not sure red is my colour, but I think it should be.

why for you sold out asos skirt?

I love seeing maxi skirts on other people - I just think they look super awkward on me.

For work, I like midis. For fun, I don't mind a little shorter but I honestly rarely wear skirts for fun. I see cute pictures on pinterest and I want to but I always reach for the jeans or shorts.

Short shorts!

Shorts mean summer, my favourite! Seriously though, is there anything else that makes you think of summer more than a pair of denim cut offs? maybe a beer and the beach.

I think everyone should have a pair of denim shorts in their wardrobe, and I love the old navy khaki shorts.

I also think shorts can be acceptable 'going out' attire - nothing too fancy, just the local hole in the wall bar!

What do you think, guys? Are skirts and shorts essentials in your wardrobe, or are they more every-now-and-again like in mine?

  1. We're a bit opposite in that I wish I would wear shorts more often, but usually reach for a skirt! Thanks for the spring wardrobe inspiration...maybe I'll finally buy some new shorts this year!

  2. I always see cute skirt pics too but never would think of wearing them out on the weekend. Love cut offs just got a new pair actually. Although my husband thinks they look like something a trailer park owner would wear! I always say no they're cute on girls but guys should never ever ever wear jorts!!

  4. Really enjoying your wardrobe essentials series, Kris! Skirts and shorts are an every now and then for me, like you. I like the way they look on other people, and I do enjoy wearing the occasional skirt, but I really just prefer dresses and denim/pants.

  5. Skirts are a major part of my closet for work and I love that you wear the midi trend!! I think shorts are totally acceptable going out attire - especially on a tropical vacation!! I have a super fun pink skirt I bought from banana republic and I can't wait to wear it for spring...only wore it once last month with tights...hate the cold haha!

  8. I'm so much more of a skirt girl than a shorts girl. I love the long flowy look and something with a little sass like pleats or a fun color!

  9. It's so funny how different we all feel about shorts and skirts. I love the look of flowy skirts but feel like I can't pull them off, but pencil skirts are a definite work staple item for me. And I love a good pair of shorts, but my booty isn't quite shorts-ready yet ;)

  11. I love skirts! For the longest time I basically only wore jeans. But now I've found some skirts which I LOVE and on occasion I'll go for shorts. For some reason though, I find a lot of my skirts are more comfortable. Especially if they aren't super short.

  14. I live in maxi skirts during the summer but I really want to start wearing other skirts, too! I've added a couple floral ones to my closet for this year.. now here's hoping I actually pull them out and wear them!

  15. I'm a big fan of all kinds of skirts - although maybe not midi, I'm short and they can look a little funny on me. But rest of them I love! Especially maxi skirts at the moment :)
