Wardrobe Essentials #1: Dresses

Now, let me just preface this by saying I am absolutely not a fashion blogger, nor am I even a wannabe fashion blogger. I am just a normal-ish person who is trying to learn how to dress herself a little better, and who really, really enjoys lists.

When I was going through my little wardrobe rut, I devoured 'wardrobe essentials' or 'basics' lists. Honestly, some of them are helpful and some of them were worthless. Everyone is different, so we aren't all going to have the same basics. So I am creating this list, because maybe you are more like me and have similar wants / tastes. Or not! Keep in mind, this is a list tailored to myself and my lifestyle, and yours will no doubt be different, but isn't it fun to see inside other peoples lives / closets? I know I enjoy it!

My favourite list is Audrey's wardrobe from scratch series and she really explains the whole thing better than I ever could - examine your lifestyle and find your basics.

The first part of my little series will be dresses, because I think they are so fabulous. If you don't like dresses, or don't wear them - ignore this. Simple. I like dresses because they make me feel feminine and pretty, they are a one-stop-shop-outfit, comfy and easy.

#1 The little black dress. This may be predictable. I always thought that the 'little black dress' had to be something, well, little. and revealing, and sexy. A woman's go to sexy outfit. and you know what, that is totally fine if that's you - but it is not me. But, you can't deny a black dress is fabulous, slimming, easy and goes with everything. It can be dressed up or down and I think it's a really, really great piece.

I have the below dress from H&M and I adore it. It's comfy, casual, heck I could use it as a swim cover up. I could also rock it as a skirt, wear it out on the town with the right accessories, wear it all year round. And it was $13, so... winning.

There are a million and one choices out there for the little black dress, casual, dressy, sexy, boho - whatever floats your boat. It is such a versatile piece, and in my opinion, a wardrobe essential.

#2 Maxi dresses! I love maxi dresses. For the longest time, I was afraid of them because I am kinda tall, and I kept finding ones that were too short. I imagine being petite would also present its problems, but I'm sure there are solutions out there for all of us! And maxi dresses are just fantastic - easy, comfy, looks more dressed up than they really are.. can be dressed up or down - what more could you want?

I personally favour solid colours, or at least, that's what I currently own, but I like the idea of stripes or patterns on maxis. They can be as sexy, casual or fancy as you want.

#3 Dressy dresses. Say that five times fast. I don't do fancy things often, I don't know a lot of people in this country so am rarely invited to weddings and the like. So when I am, I like to go all out - for me. My all out might be your relaxing at home!

Whatever your style, it's great to have some fancier dresses for whatever occasion life throws your way.

5. Sun dresses / summer dresses. These are possibly my favourite style of dresses, comfy, casual, cute, and summery. I love summer, I am a summer baby through and through (even though in America my birthday is in winter, boo).

For me a summer / sun dress is something really light, breezy, not constricting in any way - you know, for those days it gets above 100 and you don't even want to get dressed? Sun dresses are my favourite. I just love how casual they can be, but also really feminine and pretty.

#6 The Striped Dress. Yep, The elusive striped dress. I do not own one of these (yet) but I think it is just as versatile as the little black dress, and I can't wait to get my hands on one, if only I could find the perfect one in the perfect price range. See Audrey's post for more on striped dresses.

#7 Winter Dresses. This isn't so much an essential, but for fun. And this past winter, it was essential for me to have some fun, and I was so sick of wearing jeans out to all the holiday parties. By winter dress, I mean .. well, obviously a dress you can wear in winter.

I could totally wear that little black H&M dress in the winter with the right accessories and layers, and I could wear the striped dress as well. But, sometimes there are dresses that look better in the winter, with tights and boots and all that jazz - in my opinion anyway.

Well, that's it for the first part of my wardrobe essentials series - I would like to reiterate that I am no fashion blogger, or stylist, or anyone special -this list may be completely irrelevant to your lifestyle or very similar.  It's all for fun!

Do you have any dresses in your wardrobe that you consider essential? Do you have a essentials, or basics list? As you may have guessed, I love to read them - so do share!

  1. I'm such a sucker for a good dress! They are my 'go to' item for getting ready for work and I have a lot in my closet. I always seem to find a few when I'm out shopping, but what I really need are tops to go with jeans and dress pants! I did buy my first maxi last weekend! I'm 5' 6" and always thought they'd make me look short, but I found one with a vertical pattern that helps stttrreeetcchh me out so I'm pretty excited!

  2. So happy you came by my blog so that I could find yours! :) I love fashion posts by non-fashion bloggers. Fashion bloggers seem to always be talking about clothes that I actually think are weird, or their clothes are just crazy expensive. The way you did it is great. It's fun to see your style . . . and now I want to go buy five new dresses! So excited to come back to your blog! :)
